Came here on a Saturday night around 6. We were seated right away. It took awhile for the waitress to come over but once she did she was attentive. I ordered a spinach and chicken quesadilla and a jumbo margarita. My friends got a Taco Salad. Chips and Salsa were on the table right away. The chips were warm and we did get more salsa and should have said no white dip. None of us are fans but they have it if you like it. Margarita was strong. The food is your typical Mexican fare around here. Taste like almost every other Mexican restaurant. Not bad but not great either. It hit the spot and what we wanted. Fast, good and hot. They checked all the boxes. In and out quickly. We did order the cheese dip which was very good. I do love a Mexican cheese dip and have never been able to re create it at home. Sad face. It's been likely over 7 years since my last visit to La Herradura VB. I use to be a regular. They do have a Norfolk location that the owners son runs. My wife and I decided on a Friday Mexcan dinner during happy hour. We were greeted with smiles at the door by the hostess and owner. We were seated at a booth with menus, chips and salsa. Also drink orders were taken. Of course a margarita was in order to celebrate Friday. It was dashed out and super yummy! The dining room was over half full around 630. The bar that seats around 8-10 was oddly empty. Everything seemed clean. In short order our friendly waitress brought my 24oz Margarita on the rocks with salted rim arrived and was super! I ordered a buritto deluxe with side of rice. My wife chicken enchilada. The food hit the table within 15 minutes and was HOT! Everything looked great! My wife and i really enjoyed our meals. Our waitress was strong and checked on us a few times. As well the owner checked in. This was a pleasant surprise. I suspect new owners since my last visit. Solid 4 and will return. read more

My boyfriend came here all the time during his college years with his football buddies about 10 years ago so we had to stop for lunch. UPDATE: Gross chunks of fat in their tacos!!!! Unfortunately, the barria tacos have been pretty bad the last 5-6 times I've had them - huge gross chunks of FAT!!! I even asked the lady last time to please make sure there were no chunks of fat in them---nope---got home & luckily I went thru each taco before taking big bites of FAT in 2 of them. Also, the sauce changed & no longer has that great smoky beef flavor, so I don't know what happened? It's just huge chunks of fat and the sauce is kind of flavorless now. Also one time we went in and people were sleeping in the booths a few booths away from us? It was really strange. I guess I'll try another place. Not the best, not the worse right in between. The drinks are probably the worse part here. We were a party of 4 and we all go different drinks to try. Not a single drink of ours was good. The prices for those drinks were a bit unreasonable no taste at all either. When it comes to food it was alright the portion was good but some of the food tasted old not quite fresh and again for the price it just wasn't worth it. Would I eat here again? No, thank you. Fantastic, friendly service is bumping this 3 star restaurant in terms of food quality to a 4 star overall. Every single person, from 2 different waitresses, our bus boy, and our hostess was remarkably friendly. Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted, sat, and enjoyed the Mexican decor and modern Mexican music. Within minutes of ordering, our food arrived piping hot (of note, despite it being lunch hour, only three other tables had guests seated, which perhaps helped the speed along). Our group had tacos and a lunch special, both of which were very tasty, although the Chile Relleno itself was rather small and had too much breading around it compared to other local establishments. The Mexican rice was fantastic, and not something I thought I'd be saying; it's usually more of a "eh it's there" to me, but this rice had me wishing for more! Apparently we haven't lived here long enough to know this, but we tried the "Salsa Blanco," which apparently is a famous Hampton Roads dip for chips in addition to traditional red salsa. It was fantastic and the staff was friendly in explaining to us how to make it, and no, we had not just discovered some new Mexican recipe, but rather one local to the Hampton Roads area. read more

I use to come here all the time when my brother lived in Chick's Beach. It's been at least 5+ years and I was really disappointed with the food and the service. Aside from taking our order (3 people), our server only came to our table 2 more times- To ask if everything was okay after the food was brought out and then to give me the check. Luckily we are pretty low maintenance and don't really mind as long as it's a good meal. As for the food, it was good, but the portions compared to Mexican restaurants in the area was much smaller and their prices a bit higher. Let me just say when you bring about half a basket of chips with about half (maybe 3 oz) filled bowls of salsa and white sauce to a table and never refill or ask if a refill is needed...that's not good. We are not petite people. My son is 6'4" and that alone should tell you there isn't enough for the other 2 people at the table. I felt the food wasn't as fresh as it could be either. The best thing I can say about this restaurant is that it is close to my house. And the size of the restaurant is large enough so there is never a wait. I was excited about trying the spot since I had read the wonderful Yelp reviews and love Mexican food. But my personal experience is that it is just ordinary. On my first visit the rice & beans portions were so small that I was still hungry after the meal. I ordered another side dish of beans, which are very good. My tacos were placed so close to the rice and beans that they fell apart when I picked them up. I have learned to always request that the tacos are placed on a separate plate, The one thing that was outstanding was the margarita. In many Mexican restaurants the margaritas taste like they are all mixer and no tequila. That is...... until this week. I tasted no tequila and asked the server if there was a new bartender. Not very friendly she said "No, why?" I told her the problem. She proceeded to tell me that they just poured the drink out of a bottle. Ooopppsss... not a good thing to tell a customer. I nicely said " It doesn't taste the same." She frowned and left. Eventually she returned with a shot of tequila, poored it in my drink, and with a frowny face proceeded to again tell me I was wrong. After I stirred the drink it tasted like it had on my other visits. The location is the newly renovated and renamed Chic's Beach Shopping Center. It's located on the Southwest corner of the intersection of Shore Drive and Pleasure House Road. Parking is plentiful but not alway close because of the surrounding businesses. I'll probably go back because it's so close to my house. But I'll be hoping the unfriendly server won't be the one who waits on us. read more

I just had dinner with my family at Herradura on shore Drive. Literally, just horrible. Slimy guacamole, attitude with the worst attitude that I've ever seen from a server.... Ever. It's like she was in some kind of fight with my daughter and my son's girlfriend. She smirked at us all night and my grandchildren said that she said the word Puta(?). We spent $200 and when I asked about getting some margaritas to go, she just said no and pretty much walked away. I had to go up to the manager and asked about what the rules were. He didn't care about anything, and seem to be defending her on all counts. She stood in back of him smirking at me the entire time I was asking him. Her name was Gaby and from what I was seeing, she must've been the manager's girlfriend because there's no way that behavior would've gone at any other restaurant. We even ordered a kids meal as we had three children under the age of 12 with us and she found out that it was for an adult so she's not only did she charge us a dollar more for the meal, but she charge $2.50 for tomato and lettuce. This place is a total rip off. When I stood there and told her that I've been frequenting this place for 15 years since I've been open she still stood in back of the manager and smirked at me like she could give a rats ass. I made sure to tell them that I would never be back and that I will tell everyone I know about the poor service and the disgusting food. Dead serious folks. Do not go there. I've never felt so attacked by a human being while trying to eat a meal. The rest of the staff just still around and stared at us at our table also. It was absolutely horrible. Service is fantastic and the food is standard for Mexican style restaurants. It's not the best in town, but the location is convenient for my friends, it's relatively inexpensive, and it is excellent to sit outside during the summer. I've never seen the place packed so it's normally not an issue to get an immediate table in the evening during the week. The most recent visit I noticed the oil for the chips was going rancid (or was just very very old) but the actual meal was good. read more

Called in and ordered two lunch specials today January 26th 2024. One was the number six and the other was the speedy Gonzales with one extra taco. Picked it up and it's $28. There's no way we should have been charged what we were. If the menu is online or incorrect they need to be taken down and so does the pictures with the menus. I get more food in a Mexican TV dinner. The service was horrible. Got there at 4:45 on a Tuesday afternoon and sat at the bar. Wife and I were the only two people at the bar. The bartender stood in front of us for about 3 minutes and did not even acknowledge our presence. Not a hello or how are you or anything. When we ordered she poured our margaritas from a gallon container instead of mixing them on the spot and they do have a full-service bar there. The food was edible at best. Chips were not fresh, and the white sauce tasted like mayonnaise while the red sauce tasted like spaghetti sauce. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. This place used to be so good. My best friend and I would come here and have the best times. Came in today. Smelled like throw up. We sat down, chips were stale and dark and the waitress told me that's all they have. I told her the chips taste like they were cooked in dark/dirty oil and she said it's because they only change the oil once a week. There was no one else in the restaurant and she didn't even care to bring a fresh batch. The quality and service has really gone down. We went to La Herradura on the advice of one of my partner's coworkers, and what a great recommendation it was! We ordered for takeout and our order was ready in less than 20 minutes. We got the "La Superior," which had a burrito, chile relleno, rice, and beans; the shrimp quesadilla, which comes with guac, tomato, sour cream, and lettuce all on the side; the Mexican guacamole dip; and two margaritas. Let me say, even though the margaritas came in a strange to-go container (they looked like soup containers), there's a reason people rave about them. They tasted perfect and were super refreshing. The food itself was also really good and fresh tasting - I absolutely loved by shrimp quesadilla, which had some onions and peppers inside, as well as really tasty grilled shrimp. They also give you chips and salsa on the side, which is a nice addition. The only point that I would like to recommend to the owners is an inclusion of prices on their online menu. We ordered over the phone after looking at the menu online, and were initially a bit sticker shocked when we got the bill. However, once we got our food, we understood a bit more -- what we thought was going to be a side of guacamole turned out to be a whole plate, so that likely drove up the bill. Other than that, we had a fabulous experience with this extremely authentic Mexican restaurant, and I would love to come back/order takeout again sometime! read more

First time here, service wasn't bad, the staff was friendly & greeted us as soon as we walked in. Wide variety of dishes to choose from.
