It was so good i traveled there in the rain the next day to order some. I had special fried rice, shrimp st Paul and an egg roll. It tasted good, actually this will probably be my go to spot for fried rice. BUT first off the smell coming in can be off putting and they only take cash. its like 2026 why is there no other alternative to paying. Now the prices aren't astronomically high so if not accepting cards will keep the prices down, ill go to the bank. LOL The service was great, they were patient and efficient. St. Louis had a bunch of Chinese immigrants from the railroad days and Chong is seated in a long stretch of authentic Chinese restaurants. We came here searching for something we could only get in St. Louis called the St. Paul Sandwich, which is a fully loaded with protein Egg Foo Yung packed between two pieces of fresh white bread, lettuce and pickles. Chong Wah has been one of our go to Chinese places for years. They stay pretty busy so it's best to call in your order ahead of time to avoid the wait if you can. The food is fresh and hot. Be sure to have cash on hand they don't take cards. They do have a smaller parking lot. They have the classic offerings with a few other additions. Go check them out and show your support. I'm very split on how I feel about this place. I've ordered several chicken dishes here, and honestly, they all pretty much taste the same. I do feel like their sauces have enough flavor for my palate, and compared to some other Chinese restaurants in the area, this is one of the better options. That said, I don't particularly love the quality of the chicken in any of the orders I've placed. A few times, I've had gristly pieces, which really ruins the overall dinner experience for me. The lo mein is very disappointing. I did appreciate the bok choy they added, so I picked that out of the noodles and added soy sauce because, again, it was missing a strong flavor level. I think this might be the most disappointing lo mein I've had. That being said, lo mein isn't one of my top five Chinese takeout orders, so take that for what it's worth. I also noticed that the menus on this spot are very outdated or lacking legible photos on Yelp or even Google. I had a sinking suspicion that they might have handwritten menu additions or "specials of the day" signs inside, so I took a picture of each one. What you see on the printed menu is pretty much all they offer. If you're looking for a wide variety of flavors or sauce options, you're not going to find them here. The spiciest thing they have is General Tso's chicken (according to the cook), which is... not spicy. At all. I think my favorite thing about this place is actually the building itself. This is a food review, though, not an architecture review, so suffice it to say I keep coming back for a hit of nostalgia as the place is very outdated. There are no usable customer tables to eat at inside; they're filled with random home and cooking objects, which, in my opinion, is a sign of a good Chinese restaurant. One last thing to note: this spot is cash only. They'll give you a number over the phone that you'll need to remember, so write it down--maybe on the inside of your hand--before slipping on your shoes to pick up your order, which is usually ready in about 15 minutes. read more

I eas excited to try Chong Wah after hearing so many good things about the establishment. You cant eat inside, yiu irder then wait for your food in the parking lot. The food was made to order and I had to wait for it which I was fine with, but after tasting it, it was very old tasting.... like the grease was old or something. I tried this spot for the first and LAST time Saturday. I heard they had good food. My mother and I had been running errands all day and decided to keep it simple. We stopped in for take out. They have minimal seating inside and I do mean the bare minimum seating. The majority of the booths are occupied by items for the restaurant. Walked in, took like 2 minutes for someone to come to the counter to take my order. I almost feel like it was faster to receive my order than to place it. I ordered 2 half orders of shrimp fried rice with extra egg. The total was like $13 something. It's a cash only spot...FYI The order was ready and you retrieve your food at the window down to the left. I get home, was super excited to get my fried rice fix on......... Uuuummmmm NOOOOO!!! This rice was close to horrid. The rice was dry and bland. Who makes fried rice without seasoning of some sort??? Yes, the portions are large.....but who cares, if the rice isn't good..... My mother threw her rice away, mine was literally just OK and that's a stretch. I will not be returning to try ANYTHING else on the menu. Welp...I've been coking here for easily 25 years. Food is usually consistent quick Chinese food fair. Ordered wings and a whole order of plain fried rice with extra egg and sprouts. Today my wings were hot but had zero flavor. Rice had a dash of egg and sprouts on top by Seinfeld not extra. Rice also was pretty bland. I always add soy spice and red pepper powder for extra flavor but today the pepper and soy simply added any flavor. Not sure I need to be back anytime soon or maybe back to just get St. Paul samiches‍ Order to pickup is always quick and easy. I ordered the sesame chicken and general tso's chicken. Both had extremely large pieces of breaded chicken.The chicken was also kind of dry on the inside. The sauces did not taste very flavorful or stand out at all. The carry out portions were a good amount. The crab rangoons were on point. Although the term "service with a smile" can't necessarily be used, maybe that's due to the volume of business (although it's a family owned business and you would think that would make them smile, right). Hubby liked the General Tso chicken and egg roll. I had Sweet and Sour and egg roll with pork fried rice. The rice tasted a little burnt and was really brown. Same woman behind the counter the last 20 years I have been going there, so it is truly a family owned business. My favorite are the special fried rice and crab rangoons, that are actually full on the inside instead of the puny things you see elsewhere. I've eaten at Chong Wah a bunch of times. So why go back if it only get's 3 stars? Well, sometimes you just want fast and easy, and Chong Wah definitely is that. Waiting time is typically less than 5 minutes from when you order until you are walking out the door. I first discovered Chong Wah when I lived in UCity in the early 90s. 15 years later and the same woman is behind the counter 100% of the time. This is definitely a to-go place, as the half dozen tables are really only a place for people to sit and wait for their carry out order. I've never seen anyone eating there except for employees on a break. The place is very rough around the edges. The decor is in need of a paint job and the tables are old. I'm going to assume the kitchen is clean (the door is always opens so you can peak in, but can't see enough to really know)...but if you are a germaphob, I'm not sure you will be comfortable here. I'm going to assume the health department has checked and they meet minimum standards. You might feel differently. They clearly pinch every penny and you'll get your to-go order in a paper sack that could be advertising just about anything...if they can get a bunch of bags cheap, they buy them. While the menu is fairly extensive, I've only gotten combo platters, My standards are hot braised chicken (boneless) or General Tso's chicken with steamed rice and crab rangoon. The food was horrible. I ordered Kung Pao Shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked and dry. There was an abundance of onion and some green peppers. The whole thing was covered with brown gravy. Didn't really have any Kung Pao flavor. The vegetarian egg rolls were small tightly wound bundles of mush. I ate about 1/3 of the meal and discarded the rest. I had a take out order.
