Take for 314 day. It was really tasty though we weren't a fan of the crab rangoon. The filling tasted nice though maybe too sweet but wasn't a lot and there was a lot of chewy dough. Oddly, the egg drop soup was slightly sweet so I had to doctor it up with green onion, white pepper, and sesame oil. The shrimp St. Paul was a standout. Love that they season the egg foo young patty and the white bread and had lots of fresh onion and pickles for the crunch. They also didn't over cook it! The beef lo mein was spot on, the fried sichuan bean curd was also sooooo good. Chicken balls for the hot braised chicken was over battered but the sauce was on point. Will come back. read more

I have been coming here for at least 20 years. It is the best Chinese in the whole metropolitan area. The shrimp egg fu yung actually has large shrimp, not these shrim shavings I've had in other places. Also I have recently become a big fan of their orange chicken. It's crisipy and slightly sweet. The dinning in experience is not pleasant. The place seems unkempt. People are coming and going constantly to get their orders. This time the most unsettling part was fortune cookie. I crack it open as and there is an advertisement! I did not appreciate that. On this occasion I came inside to order carry out. I joined about five others waiting for my food. I have been looking for a Chinese restaurant that makes chow mein for a while now and I found it. The chicken chow mein was so good. It had nice chunky chicken pieces and good veggies! I had the pork fried rice that had good sized pieces of pork and pork egg foo young with a great brown sauce. I will be ordering again for sure. Came here specifically for a St. Paul sandwich, and... it certainly is a sandwich. It came out PIPING hot. Its salty, greasy, savory, rich and slathered with mayo with a kick of vinegar from the pickles. Its a little crisp from the egg foo young, but sandwiched between two soft pillows of plain white bread. Its everything all at once and also unlike anything at the same time. It manages to evade categorization and doesn't fit into my lexicon of sandwich, but it definitely is one. I've heard this is the place to go to try a St. Paul, and from my experience, it definitely seems like a St. Paul worth trying at least once. read more

This USED to be one of my FAVORITE places to eat for over 15 years but since they were purchased their quality has suffered greatly! I had family come in from out of town and raved about their food so we ordered dinner that night from there. It was HORRIBLE! The egg rolls were greasy and soggy, their "house special" of sesame chicken was awful! The chicken had been sitting in the sauce for so long the breading had soaked up everything and was dry. There wasn't even any extra sauce left in the bottom of the container to help. It was practically inedible. I've never been more EMBARRASSED for suggesting a restaurant to family and HEARTBROKEN at the same time that another favorite has fallen by the wayside and needs to be deleted from my "go to" list. :( read more

Visiting from out of town. Before we got to the door, my husband asked me if I still wanted to eat there bc it lacked curb appeal. I said dumps often have good food so we ventured in. One of the staff with giant caterpillar lashes approached the counter looking miserable. It's a small funky little place with seating and doesn't feel clean but I was still willing until we stood in front of a masked woman who didn't part her lips to ask what we wanted and just stared forward. I have been going to this restaurant for 25 years. It is a steeple in the neighborhood. All the food is delicious but one area where the food is lacking is the crab Rangoon! it used to be savory now it is sweet. I want the ability to add sweetness. I don't want it automatically with my food. I use to think they had the best crab Rangoon in St. Louis, but that is not the case anymore. The service is always great very fast and very convenient. I honestly liked their old decor better it reminded me of a traditional Chinese restaurant a bit too modern but still a friendly a nice and clean place to eat. I have been trying so hard to find a Chinese place that I love in the city- and I think I may have struck gold with this one! My order is extremely simple, Chicken Fried Rice + Crab Rangoon. For some reason, all of the other restaurants that I have tried just haven't been able to nail them both but this one did! I had it delivered, so I can't really talk about the ambiance, but their service was quick and the food was still hot when I got it! (Two major keys with takeout in my book.) Wanted to take full advantage of all the features offered by the Yelp app during lunch today by using the app to order food. When I think to go food, I often think of Chinese food. It lends itself to takeout. The experience of ordering through the Yelp app is really easy! After checking out some reviews posted for a few different restaurants, I landed on Old St Louis Chop Suey. Their entire menu was cleanly laid out in the app with descriptions and pricing. I was really impressed by the clean interface and how it was so navigable. I never have high expectations when it comes to basic, Chinese food. I chose to get two dishes to have a combo of flavors to get a real sense of what Old St. Louis Chop Suey had to offer. For starters, I got wonton soup. The broth was deliciously salty and it was thankfully not oily. There were slices of smoked pork in the soup that were very tender. That added to the overall flavor of the soup. The dumplings were tender and packed a bold punch when you bit in. For my main meal, I selected chicken lo mein and every American's favorite, General Tso's chicken. The noodle dish really stood out though. The veggies were crisp and the chicken was tender. Sometimes lo mein can be fairly bland and feel so heavy because of oils, but this dish was surprisingly light. One drawback was the chinese celery. Usually if I bite into celery in a dish, it's game over. I won't eat anymore of the food. But this lo mein was too good to stop eating, so I picked all the celery out. I was slightly let down by the General Tso's. It was fine. The breading was crispy. The chicken was cooked well. I just wish it would have had a bit more spice and a little more sweetness. The sauce was sadly bland. When I picked up the meal, I was required to wear a mask. All of the workers were also wearing masks. There's not currently indoor seating. However there were a few people standing inside waiting for their food. Luckily for me I used the amazing Yelp app to place my order. I walked in and my order was sitting on the counter waiting for me. It was so much better than ordering and standing around the restaurant possibly being exposed to the virus. read more

Not impressed. This place had high reviews and is right near my house I'm not sure why maybe it's the dishes we picked. Boyfriends got Sweet and Sour Chicken sauce on the side there wasn't much and the vegetables weren't sautéed to be soft. I got orange chicken combo. Hubby really wanted to try a St Paul sandwich and this place was near where we were staying, so we decided to try and phone in our order to pick up on the way. The only number we could find online wasn't working for us, so we had to order once we got there. They were pretty quick, so that worked out okay. I do feel like they have a working number somewhere though, because lots of people were coming in to pick up orders while we waited. They have a sign on the door that says mask required and although they do not turn away customers who are not wearing one, we felt like they would like people to take it seriously, so we wore ours. They have dining tables inside; however, they are pushed together and it doesn't really feel like they want you to eat inside right now. That being said, the tables do give you a place to sit while you wait for your order. Onto the food, this was just okay Chinese food for us. We tried lots of different items and took home way too much food. The consensus was that people were glad they tried the St Paul sandwich due to it's unique qualities, but we would probably not rush back to this location when visiting St Louis. read more

I have had Old St Louis Chop Suey bookmarked on Yelp for a long time. So tonight, when I saw Jess P. check-in, I knew it was time to go. Knowing from other reviews, I stopped by my local ATM to get cash, since they are a cash only business. When trying a new Chinese restaurant, I always start out with an Egg Roll and a small order of Crab Rangoon. These are the items I use as a foundation in judging the quality of food they serve. My Egg Roll was crisp, the inside ingredients were warm and the outside was a medium golden tone. I hate it when some places overcook the egg rolls, but this one was done just right. The Crab Rangoon was plump and the pockets were full of creamy crab sauce. They too, were deep fried perfectly. They had a light golden color, which was appealing to their presentation. My main entree was an half order of, General Tso's Chicken. Half Order? It was enough for two meals, so I had it for lunch the next day. On their menu it is listed as hot & spicy, but I didn't think so. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I would of liked a little more spice and heat to mine. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant and how friendly and professional the counter staff was. I also thought it was kinda cool, that the entire staff was dressed alike and all were wearing American Flag baseball caps. I have two other Chinese restaurants closer to my home, but when I have the craving in the future, I will make the drive to here. Yes, that's right, they impressed me that much. I decided to visit this place since one of my Elite team members had a really good experience. I ordered the empress chicken, chicken fried rice and appetizer combo. The empress chicken had a kick and decent flavor, but I struggled to find the chicken in all the breading. I'll pass when ordering again. The chicken fried rice was quite good. I decided to add bean sprouts, so overall I was pleased with it. The appetizer combo was my shared item, so I only tried the chicken wing and crab rangoon. Never had egg foo young before, and having it slapped between two slices of bread and slathered with mayo was a good first start. Really enjoyed this, liked the cut of chicken in it, all the flavors and textures. My husband got the hunan chicken which had tons of great veggies, and also the chicken was velvety, tender, cooked very well. Nice consistency of sauce. Got this delivery using the Yelp app which was cheaper then Uber eats thank goodness. The beef dish was really tasty and the lo mein was good too. The shrimp was fresh not some defrosted mess like you get at other places around town. I grew up eating shrimp from the gulf so I know fresh shrimp and this was it. Lots of good fresh and crispy vegetables. Cheese rolls were perfect. The only thing that really got me was the hot and sour soup which was a good consistency but not enough filling. Also the rice that came with the beef dish was so small. Get an extra order and it isn't that much more. read more
