I love out of the way places that you wouldn't ordinarily go to, but somehow find. The kind of place where they serve great food at fair prices. The kind of place where they welcome you and are truly appreciative of your patronage. The Stellar Hog is one of those places. Located in an older neighborhood all by itself, we were greeted by the owner who took us to our table. The first thing you notice is the smell. It's a wonderful BBQing meat smell that makes you can't wait to eat. The place is bigger on the inside than it looks and very clean. There's an outdoor eating area as well. We ordered at the bar, both my friend and I ordering the OG Brisket Sandwiches, mine with Coleslaw and my friend's with fries. No sooner did we sit down did our food come, and WOW, the sandwiches were huge with a pile of perfectly cooked melt in your mouth Brisket. I'm hard pressed to remember any better. The coleslaw was, well, different and hard to explain, but had a tangy mustard kind of taste. The fries on my buddy's plate were fantastic as well. The owner checked on us several times, and obviously valued us as customers. BBQ is huge in St. Louis and the big places and chains get all the attention. I had some crazy high expectations... best bbq in the galaxy? Im still on that hunt. But stellar hog is still damn good. They chop that brisket thick! I mean thick! The depth of flavor was astonishing. I mean the rub is superb, and a few flaky ends tasted like beef jerky in the best way possible. Because of the thickness you get a multitude of textures, intensities. Every bite is roller coaster ride. Some send you straight out the milky way--incredible! The sides were good, but both missed the mark on elite for me. I would love to experiment with some others! Oh, and their house bbq sauce is splendid. Like that is legit stuff. First time visiting. Street parking nearby. Water is self serve under the partially covered patio. When ordering, you do so at the bar and seating is seat yourself. They were out of brisket, unfortunately. I ordered the smoked turkey, mac n cheese and beans and pulled pork, potato salad and mac n cheese for our second order. Smoked turkey and pork were both very delicious as was the mac n cheese and beans. Potato salad was ok. Very quick ordering and getting our food. This place is a bar. It sits on a corner in a neighborhood. They offer an outside area to sit and eat. They allow pets too. Inside of the bar is ok. It was clean and laid back. The employees seemed young but respectful. The presentation of my food was not the best. It looked basic just on a metal plate. I ordered Ribs, Brisket, Mac n cheese and Collard greens. Ribs- fall off the bone. A good smoke ring. Brisket- Not dry and easy to chew. Mac n cheese- The flavor was bland. It has potential to be better. Collard Greens- Spicy for no reason. We swung by The Stellar Pig while passing through town and were seriously impressed. I had the smoked turkey sandwich with added Gouda and a side of creamy cabbage--both were excellent. My husband ordered the White Wall (brisket with horseradish, Gouda, and a delicious extras) and also got the creamy cabbage. We loved everything we tried. We also shared the corn ribs, which were a fun and very tasty add‑on. The vibe is dive‑bar‑meets‑Irish‑pub, but much hipper and more welcoming than you'd expect. There's plenty of seating inside, even though it doesn't look that way when you first walk in. You order at the bar, grab a number, and pick any table. I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't live up to the hype. The macaroni and cheese tasted more like cafeteria-style mac than homemade BBQ sides. My first plate of brisket came out with mostly fatty pieces, and when the replacement came out, it was better, but the food was barely warm and seemed to cool off quickly. The sauces didn't do much to elevate the food either. I tried a few hoping they'd add some flavor, but none of them really stood out or made the meal any better. Between the bland sides, inconsistent brisket, cold food, and forgettable sauces, the overall experience just fell flat. I've eaten here before and honestly don't remember it being such a huge letdown. That's what made this visit so disappointing. Maybe I caught them on an off day, but this experience was far from what I remembered and left me with little desire to return anytime soon. The Stellar Hog remains in my upper echelon of BBQ restaurants in the St. Louis area after many visits over the years since it opened. This last visit I had the pork steak plate special that came with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts and so delicious. I can't go there and not have the brisket so I got a 1/4 pound of the fatty beef brisket on the side for an extra $8 and still tastes like the Texas beef brisket I'd get when I lived up in Dallas and that's to say the best! Had to check out the STL BBQ while in town and Stellar Hog came highly recommended in my search. It's a classic bar-restaurant, which I'm all about. Ordering is done at the bar and then it's brought out to your table. I love a good brisket so I chose the sandwich along with the creamy cabbage (also highly recommended) and added another side of the Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was straightforward, very creamy and cheesy. The cabbage was well worth the recommendation; you'll hardly know you're eating a vegetable. Finally, I was very satisfied with the brisket. It had a good bark to it, and once you got towards the middle of the strips, they just melted in your mouth. Typically I don't gravitate towards sweet barbecue sauce but Stellar Hog's is not super sweet and complemented the brisket very well. The price point for the portion sizes felt reasonable to me and I did not leave hungry. I can see why this place comes so well recommended and I'd be happy to come back. read more

We ordered at the bar (I'm pretty sure this is the norm) and there was quite a line. Be prepared to wait a bit because it's a popular place. I ordered The White Wall sandwich which is brisket, onion, Gouda, and horseradish. I really enjoyed it! The cheese was nice and melty on the brisket and added to the flavor. I also ordered the Mac and cheese which was super cheesy and tasty. We recently saw a post debating best bbq in STL and decided to give The Stellar Hog a try after seeing many recommendations. The staff was very friendly and got us seated right away. We chose to eat indoors as opposed to the patio. When you are ready to order, you go to the bar to place your order. Service was pretty quick. For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried corn ribs. These were absolutely delicious! We all highly recommend. I chose the Smoked wings as my entree. I'm a fan of flash frying the smoked wing. I liked the slight crisp on it but I prefer a more seasoned wing. The smoke was good but it lacked salt to me. The bbq sauce was good and helped. I also ordered the brussel sprouts. They are sprinkled with parmesan cheese but once again lacked salt. Once added they were much better. My daughter chose the half order of pork ribs with baked beans and macaroni and cheese. She loved her ribs and appreciated how tender they were. The baked beans were loved by all of us but, mac and cheese lacked salt. My husband ordered the beef rib with baked beans and coleslaw. He really loved his meal as well. He thought the beef rib was very tender and had good flavor. We found a table and ordered at the counter. We got the fried pretzels, half ribs with fries and pit beans, and the BLT. There isn't a kids menu but their sides and apps are kid friendly , whether it's the beans, Mac or the pretzels. The patio punch was well balanced and a designed to one of those perennial summer cocktails. Their baby back ribs are dry rubbed and smoked over 4 hours, then finished a honey chipotle glaze. It lives upto the hype. The ribs aren't fall apart but still tender. Their in house barbecue sauces are very good but not necessary when one can dip the ribs back in the glaze. Even the half rib portion is so substantial that it can be shared. The fries are well seasoned and crispy. The BLT is usually perfect, however they were out of the cheesy focaccia this time, which is the standout factor. The fried pretzels were decent as shareables for the table. For STL's barbeque options, the stellar hog is near the top because of their ribs and the overall value for portions, and I'll definitely visit again. read more

Some of my favorite bbq in St. Louis! So much flavor, meat is always tender, and the portions are massive! My family moved into the neighborhood recently and it's now one of our go to's often. They are so friendly and you can tell they love their customers. It's quaint and even has outdoor seating. Since the chesterfield location closed, we were determined to drive to south city to try Stellar Hog. It was definitely with the drive. We found street parking on a Fri night pretty close to the restaurant. The ladies at the bar taking orders for food were very friendly. It took maybe 15 minutes to get our order, which was fine. I ordered the smoked corned beef brisket sandwich with fries. The sandwich was very big as I only ate half of it. The beef was smoky, thick cut, tender, flavorful and it was loaded. My hubby said it was as good if not better than Katz's deli in NYC (theirs is not smoked). The fries were tasty, crisp with just the right amount of salt. They reheated well in my air fryer as the portion was large. We also brought home some smoked turkey and it was moist and delicious. My friends got the turkey sandwich and the regular brisket sandwich and were happy with their selection. We all brought home leftovers so it was a good value. They even had live music outside. This place was a let down for me. We sat on the Patio which is nice, you order your drinks inside, fine. We were the only people out there beside the owner who greeted us, very lovely. But when it came time to take our order we waited and waited over three tables who newly sat down got asked before us. The brisket, both kinds, were dry and the corned beef brisket might as well of been a salt block! The food came out quickly. The corn ribs were good. The pulled pork was as expected. Don't like the potato salad at all and a little watery we had to doctor it up. The chili is good and meaty, baked beans are not bad and the Brussels are good. I had the Grimace Sandwich (pulled rib), roll was fluffy with good exterior, held up well to the massive amount of rib meat; pickles were great, red onions; rib meat moist, excellent smoke (either cherry or pecan?) just right amount of sauce. Brussel sprouts well roasted, crisp and chewy, with a little bit of parm. Potato salad also amazing - finely cubed potatoes, lots of fresh dill, and just creamy enough. Best barbecue in the area. Meat-wise, we liked the turkey & brisket but the ribs were not the best we've had. For the sides, beans were the winner but non were stand-out.
