BBQ out isn't usually my go to so I put off trying the stellar hog, and now I will live with that regret. Best BBQ I've had in a while in STL hands down. When you first walk in it gives dive bar vibes but opens up to a dining room & has a good size patio that wraps around the side & back. You order up at the bar & they give you a number, We got the brisket plate, half rack of ribs, and fried corn ribs. We had mac & cheese and potato salad for our side with the plate, we wanted pit beans but they were out, will just have to go back soon to try again. All the tables had two BBQ options Spicy Lou & Sweet Stella. I preferred the sweet but both were delicious. The meat was cooked perfectly. Will be back with friends!
First time visiting. Street parking nearby. Water is self serve under the partially covered patio. When ordering, you do so at the bar and seating is seat yourself. They were out of brisket, unfortunately. I ordered the smoked turkey, mac n cheese and beans and pulled pork, potato salad and mac n cheese for our second order. Smoked turkey and pork were both very delicious as was the mac n cheese and beans. Potato salad was ok. Very quick ordering and getting our food. Highly recommend visiting if in town or resident who loves bar b q. Compliments to all at The Stellar Hog!!
Found this on Yelp - one of the few places open on a Tuesday until 8pm. Completely worth it. The creamy cabbage was AWESOME, Potato Salad was great. Brisket was good, maybe a tad dry. The St. Louis ribs had a sauce reminiscent of cherry vanilla cola. Fantastic ambience - good prices. Completely worth the trip. Neighborhood style location - which was super cool.
This place is a bar. It sits on a corner in a neighborhood. They offer an outside area to sit and eat. They allow pets too. Inside of the bar is ok. It was clean and laid back. The employees seemed young but respectful. The presentation of my food was not the best. It looked basic just on a metal plate. I ordered Ribs, Brisket, Mac n cheese and Collard greens. Ribs- fall off the bone. A good smoke ring. Brisket- Not dry and easy to chew. Mac n cheese- The flavor was bland. It has potential to be better. Collard Greens- Spicy for no reason. Using Salami as the meat did not enhance the flavor...more of a hindrance. They didn't offer bread,pickles or onions to enhance the meal. The target of The Stellar Hog was missed. Im still hopeful.
We swung by The Stellar Pig while passing through town and were seriously impressed. I had the smoked turkey sandwich with added Gouda and a side of creamy cabbage--both were excellent. My husband ordered the White Wall (brisket with horseradish, Gouda, and a delicious extras) and also got the creamy cabbage. We loved everything we tried. We also shared the corn ribs, which were a fun and very tasty add‑on. The vibe is dive‑bar‑meets‑Irish‑pub, but much hipper and more welcoming than you'd expect. There's plenty of seating inside, even though it doesn't look that way when you first walk in. You order at the bar, grab a number, and pick any table. There's family‑friendly seating in the back too, so kids are totally fine here. Staff were super friendly and helpful too. Great food, great atmosphere--definitely worth a stop.
Had to check out the STL BBQ while in town and Stellar Hog came highly recommended in my search. It's a classic bar-restaurant, which I'm all about. Ordering is done at the bar and then it's brought out to your table. I love a good brisket so I chose the sandwich along with the creamy cabbage (also highly recommended) and added another side of the Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was straightforward, very creamy and cheesy. The cabbage was well worth the recommendation; you'll hardly know you're eating a vegetable. Finally, I was very satisfied with the brisket. It had a good bark to it, and once you got towards the middle of the strips, they just melted in your mouth. Typically I don't gravitate towards sweet barbecue sauce but Stellar Hog's is not super sweet and complemented the brisket very well. The price point for the portion sizes felt reasonable to me and I did not leave hungry. I can see why this place comes so well recommended and I'd be happy to come back.
Finally got to The Stellar Hog! This spot is loved by so many people I know so I had to check it out. The inside space is small right when you walk in by the bar, but there are tons of seats as you go into the back rooms and patio. We ordered at the bar (I'm pretty sure this is the norm) and there was quite a line. Be prepared to wait a bit because it's a popular place. I ordered The White Wall sandwich which is brisket, onion, Gouda, and horseradish. I really enjoyed it! The cheese was nice and melty on the brisket and added to the flavor. I also ordered the Mac and cheese which was super cheesy and tasty. We sat on the pip and they have a window for drinks which is good for refills and more beers, cocktails, etc. I'm going to try the ribs next time!
The Stellar Hog remains in my upper echelon of BBQ restaurants in the St. Louis area after many visits over the years since it opened. This last visit I had the pork steak plate special that came with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts and so delicious. I can't go there and not have the brisket so I got a 1/4 pound of the fatty beef brisket on the side for an extra $8 and still tastes like the Texas beef brisket I'd get when I lived up in Dallas and that's to say the best! Everyone there is always friendly, ambience is not the greatest but a dive that's this good doesn't have to be all that fancy inside.
I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't live up to the hype. The macaroni and cheese tasted more like cafeteria-style mac than homemade BBQ sides. My first plate of brisket came out with mostly fatty pieces, and when the replacement came out, it was better, but the food was barely warm and seemed to cool off quickly. The sauces didn't do much to elevate the food either. I tried a few hoping they'd add some flavor, but none of them really stood out or made the meal any better. Between the bland sides, inconsistent brisket, cold food, and forgettable sauces, the overall experience just fell flat. I've eaten here before and honestly don't remember it being such a huge letdown. That's what made this visit so disappointing. Maybe I caught them on an off day, but this experience was far from what I remembered and left me with little desire to return anytime soon. The staff were professional, but unfortunately the food just didn't deliver.

I googled best bbq in the area and this came up. So we headed out to try it. Place is in a neighborhood and you could smell smoke, so that's a good start. Inside is what I wanted. Dive ish bar with good food. Ordered basically a sample of every meat. Brisket was good Turkey was juicy Pulled pork was good Ribs were very good Salami was very interesting in herbal. Mac n cheese didn't hold up Great place and worth the stop.
For those in the mood for barbecue on a Friday evening , the stellar hog is an ideal choice in St Louis. The vibes inside are casual and family friendly. Theres also patio seating available. We found a table and ordered at the counter. We got the fried pretzels, half ribs with fries and pit beans, and the BLT. There isn't a kids menu but their sides and apps are kid friendly , whether it's the beans, Mac or the pretzels. The patio punch was well balanced and a designed to one of those perennial summer cocktails. Their baby back ribs are dry rubbed and smoked over 4 hours, then finished a honey chipotle glaze. It lives upto the hype. The ribs aren't fall apart but still tender. Their in house barbecue sauces are very good but not necessary when one can dip the ribs back in the glaze. Even the half rib portion is so substantial that it can be shared. The fries are well seasoned and crispy. The BLT is usually perfect, however they were out of the cheesy focaccia this time, which is the standout factor. The fried pretzels were decent as shareables for the table. For STL's barbeque options, the stellar hog is near the top because of their ribs and the overall value for portions, and I'll definitely visit again.
We recently saw a post debating best bbq in STL and decided to give The Stellar Hog a try after seeing many recommendations. The staff was very friendly and got us seated right away. We chose to eat indoors as opposed to the patio. When you are ready to order, you go to the bar to place your order. Service was pretty quick. For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried corn ribs. These were absolutely delicious! We all highly recommend. I chose the Smoked wings as my entree. I'm a fan of flash frying the smoked wing. I liked the slight crisp on it but I prefer a more seasoned wing. The smoke was good but it lacked salt to me. The bbq sauce was good and helped. I also ordered the brussel sprouts. They are sprinkled with parmesan cheese but once again lacked salt. Once added they were much better. My daughter chose the half order of pork ribs with baked beans and macaroni and cheese. She loved her ribs and appreciated how tender they were. The baked beans were loved by all of us but, mac and cheese lacked salt. My husband ordered the beef rib with baked beans and coleslaw. He really loved his meal as well. He thought the beef rib was very tender and had good flavor. Overall, we were pretty satisfied with our choices and would definitely go back to try other things.
I love out of the way places that you wouldn't ordinarily go to, but somehow find. The kind of place where they serve great food at fair prices. The kind of place where they welcome you and are truly appreciative of your patronage. The Stellar Hog is one of those places. Located in an older neighborhood all by itself, we were greeted by the owner who took us to our table. The first thing you notice is the smell. It's a wonderful BBQing meat smell that makes you can't wait to eat. The place is bigger on the inside than it looks and very clean. There's an outdoor eating area as well. We ordered at the bar, both my friend and I ordering the OG Brisket Sandwiches, mine with Coleslaw and my friend's with fries. No sooner did we sit down did our food come, and WOW, the sandwiches were huge with a pile of perfectly cooked melt in your mouth Brisket. I'm hard pressed to remember any better. The coleslaw was, well, different and hard to explain, but had a tangy mustard kind of taste. The fries on my buddy's plate were fantastic as well. The owner checked on us several times, and obviously valued us as customers. BBQ is huge in St. Louis and the big places and chains get all the attention. But if you want some seriously good BBQ in an authentic down home place, head to The Stellar Hog. Let me know by liking my review. read more
I had some crazy high expectations... best bbq in the galaxy? Im still on that hunt. But stellar hog is still damn good. They chop that brisket thick! I mean thick! The depth of flavor was astonishing. I mean the rub is superb, and a few flaky ends tasted like beef jerky in the best way possible. Because of the thickness you get a multitude of textures, intensities. Every bite is roller coaster ride. Some send you straight out the milky way--incredible! The sides were good, but both missed the mark on elite for me. I would love to experiment with some others! Oh, and their house bbq sauce is splendid. Like that is legit stuff. Smoky, tangy, a hint of heat serves a reminder it's at the party, but not the reason you came. As far as bbq in stl goes, this is rightfully pitted as some of the most illustrious! read more

Amazing place to eat if you're wanting some St. Louis BBQ! Has become my favorite place to go to for BBQ now. The beef brisket was tender and loved everything about it. Ribs were great, not rubbery but not super tender. The pulled pork fries were great too, definitely my favorite out of the bunch I ordered for sure. Staff were really nice, great people working there. Nothing else to say For the place in general, felt like a hole in the wall area but that's what gives it a nice vibe of eating a good bbq, almost like going to someone's house and eating a masterpiece they cooked up. 10/10 must try! read more

I've been here a couple times and this spot is the one to go to! The past times I've always gotten brisket and has never disappointed me. My wife and I just moved to Holly Hills and I was craving bbq so I decided to do an online order. We got there and was greeted right away and my order was ready. I opened my sides and looked at the brisket which is usually not how it looks. It's dry and I chose the "fatty" option online and this isn't even fatty at all which is what I love about brisket. I'm definitely going back and eating there instead but I just wish my brisket was how it's supposed to be. The Mac and cheese is also liquidy and just not made well. read more

The Stellar Hog will have you seeing stars the moment you arrive. There's just something about it that just feels right; unassuming, full bar, local feel, and friendly. There is a very inviting covered patio on the side too, so even on a rainy day you can enjoy a good BBQ. Tucked away in the middle of a neighborhood, this can be easily missed if you're not looking for it. Street parking can be difficult but not impossible especially when you are hell bent on having a good Q. My only mistake on my first visit here is ordering too much. I overestimated my hunger and finished a half pound of pulled pork with slaw and beans. The beans have a little kick to it and it's probably the best beans I've ever had. They offer quarter lbs and that's the smarter choice for my next visit. Will update review after I've tried others on menu; but for this first visit it has earned a stellar five out of five and I'm instantly a fan of The Stellar Hog. read more

Some of my favorite bbq in St. Louis! So much flavor, meat is always tender, and the portions are massive! My family moved into the neighborhood recently and it's now one of our go to's often. They are so friendly and you can tell they love their customers. It's quaint and even has outdoor seating. Parking isn't the best, it's street parking in a neighborhood but I've never had an issue finding a spot. Get the beef rib on Sunday and thank me later!! read more

We love BBQ.... and THIS PLACE did not disappoint!!! TOP NOTCH! There's a sweet sauce and a spicy sauce- a winner for all in our clan. We ordered family meal- ribs and pulled pork with fries and Mac n cheese. The portions were generous and food was hot and delicious. We aren't the people that need sauce- but it is always a nice addition. Meat was tender and well cooked- expertly BBQ'ed. Great family environment- we sat outside- Music was not too loud which is appreciated for sensory needs. There's a covered patio area and outside picnic tables- great atmosphere for families or a date night. Next time we are in town, this is a must repeat spot! Hidden gem.... And local secret! read more

Had a nice family dinner here a couple weeks back. Our waitress was nice she kept saying this feels like a Thanksgiving Dinner so nice and homely. Everything we had was great. I had the Beef rib and some Brisket. The Rib itself was amazing, with a side of Mac and Fries to accommodate the meal. We also got a order of their Wings and man those things were Devine nice and tender with a nice smoke to them get those every time. With a decent sized dinning room it was pretty busy in there enough space for a large group and then some so we were able ton take our time and enjoy our meal which is always a plus. read more

This place was a let down for me. We sat on the Patio which is nice, you order your drinks inside, fine. We were the only people out there beside the owner who greeted us, very lovely. But when it came time to take our order we waited and waited over three tables who newly sat down got asked before us. At this point we had been waiting around 15 minutes for a waitress even though we originally were the only ones out there. Also we were told to order drinks inside (separate tab btw) and then a young lady brought out a new table drinks... we were totally confused. My husband finally had to get up to get someone to take our order. The servers were young, family business but not attentive and couldn't really get their attention. We ordered corn beef brisket they put the order in wrong we got regular. They did fix it and let us keep both. The brisket, both kinds, were dry and the corned beef brisket might as well of been a salt block! The food came out quickly. The corn ribs were good. The pulled pork was as expected. Don't like the potato salad at all and a little watery we had to doctor it up. The chili is good and meaty, baked beans are not bad and the Brussels are good. Overall, pretty disappointed in the experience, we also had to chase down our check. Was really looking forward to having a cool BBQ place in my neighborhood. The people were nice but you've got to work on your service/ wait staff. Everyone pretty much walked away with the same feeling of, first and last. read more
girl this is the best damn BBQ in st. louis. smokey FLAVORFUL brisket. yes it's a lil pricey, but baby BBQ is never cheap. this is where you go to treat yourself to a solid meal. the place is small, the staff are super inviting, and the vibes are right. love the seasoned french fries too! i'll be back to try their highly demanded beef ribs. :) read more

Excellent BBQ joint in a funky building at the edge of a residential neighborhood. Broad selection of craft brews, and a full bar. I had the Grimace Sandwich (pulled rib), roll was fluffy with good exterior, held up well to the massive amount of rib meat; pickles were great, red onions; rib meat moist, excellent smoke (either cherry or pecan?) just right amount of sauce. Brussel sprouts well roasted, crisp and chewy, with a little bit of parm. Potato salad also amazing - finely cubed potatoes, lots of fresh dill, and just creamy enough. Best barbecue in the area. Looking forward to another visit! And also, service was excellent! read more

Ambiance. Dude. This place is located in an older neighborhood and the outside of the building tells you nothing about how freaking amazing the beef brisket is or how fantasmal the unsweet tea is. Hubs got the 1/2 rack of ribs with beans and brussel sprouts. I had the melt in your mouth beef brisket, potato salad, and beans. Every bite was a culinary delight. Since the chesterfield location closed, we were determined to drive to south city to try Stellar Hog. It was definitely with the drive. We found street parking on a Fri night pretty close to the restaurant. The ladies at the bar taking orders for food were very friendly. It took maybe 15 minutes to get our order, which was fine. I ordered the smoked corned beef brisket sandwich with fries. The sandwich was very big as I only ate half of it. The beef was smoky, thick cut, tender, flavorful and it was loaded. My hubby said it was as good if not better than Katz's deli in NYC (theirs is not smoked). The fries were tasty, crisp with just the right amount of salt. They reheated well in my air fryer as the portion was large. We also brought home some smoked turkey and it was moist and delicious. My friends got the turkey sandwich and the regular brisket sandwich and were happy with their selection. We all brought home leftovers so it was a good value. They even had live music outside.
