The egg was hard boiled not soft boiled and the noodles were thin and all stuck together like they came from a package and weren't stirred right while cooking. The pork and broth was delicious but this place cuts corners and it shows in food quality. Very disappointed, I won't be coming back. They also tried to sell me 1 pc of chicken karage in the form of a side which I had to send back. If someone was actually taking my order they could warn me of the portions but this place makes you order through your phone and not once did they check on me to see how my food was. The restaurant wasn't busy. we were the only customers but no one checked on us even once to see if we needed anything or how the food was. Also, just a heads up for other diners: if you pay with Apple Pay through the QR code, the tip automatically defaults to 25%. The food here is incredible. So flavorful and the presentation is awesome. I've never had such flavorful Japanese food. It's almost a fusion with Southeast Asian flavors which when put together an amazing combination. They're always creating new Ramen bowls here and they seem to get better every time. I recommend the Tom Yum Ramen and the Tokyo Tan Tan Ramen. Even the traditional miso ramen is amazing with pork belly that melts in your mouth. Ambiance was warm and comfortable, with traditional Japanese vibe. Service was excellent and friendly. Service was fast enough to grab a great raman lunch, but comfortable as a night Ramen spot. Great little spot in downtown San Rafael. It's my first time here and I must say I am very impressed! I got a spicy miso ramen and my husband got a bento box with vegetable tempura and chicken karagee. The ramen was SO GOOD! I have not had ramen that spicy in a long time because most places tend to not make it spicy in case customers can't handle it and return. So I must say if you can't handle the spice, try something else or ask for it to be mild because it was spicy (I am Thai and can handle spicy food) for me and I loved it!! My husband's bento was huge! However, the vegetables tempura could use a bit more flavor. Other than that, everything was so good. All the staff were so nice and friendly. We ordered at the front desk and they serve it at your table. Usually these places will not bother to check in with you after they bring you the food but someone checked on us to make sure everything was good and that was really nice! I wanted to LOVE this place. I really did. Cool little hole in the wall ambience. The service was cool. That said, maybe I just didn't order right. I asked for Tonkotsu Ramen. I felt like it came with some "black garlic" that just tasted more like burnt garlic, not in a good way. The bowl it is served in is not one that I would choose. It's more of a Kohn shape, so once ingredients are added, not very much room for broth. Once I was done with noodles & such, barely any broth to sip. The noodles were extremely thin, thinner than I'm used to, and the meat unfortunately was a bit bland. Tables didn't have any accompaniments for me to fix or season with either. Honestly, I was really hungry so I just finished my meal, paid my bill and moved on. There was some other stuff on the menu that had my attention, so depending on how I feel, may go back to give it one more shot. read more

I love Chonmage! I am a huge ramen fan and have had the hardest time finding good ramen in Marin that is flavorful and isn't crazy expensive. Chonmage is that place! I ordered the spicy miso ramen and I could not stop talking about how good the broth was! I wish I could order a tub of the broth, it was incredible. Spicy! So much flavor! Amazing! My husband has the beef ribeye teriyaki over rice and a day later he is still talking about how fantastic his meal was. I had a delicious dinner from Chonmage last night. I've meant to try them for ages, and I'm so glad I finally did. I got the spicy miso ramen without meat, and damn, it was good. Chonmage is the only restaurant I've visited in San Rafael that makes something described as spicy as well... appropriately spicy. Typically, I need to visit restaurants in Marin multiple times and get to know the servers a bit before they give me something that brings the heat. That's not the case here! :) I asked for my dish not to have meat, and they substituted a nice amount of tofu. The broth was rich, flavorful without being too salty, and perfectly cloudy. I usually ask for chili oil to add to my ramen, but I didn't do that here and wouldn't have needed it. The noodles were cooked well, and the veggies were fresh. I ordered takeout and the customer service over the phone, and when I picked it up, it was very welcoming and friendly. The restaurant looks cute, and I look forward to returning and eating here in person. read more

My father and I've been coming for years with exceptional service. That changed today. My father who is 84 years old has a charming way of giving tips to all the vendors here with shiny dollar coins. The man working threw his dollar coins back on our table after he gave it to him and said he didn't need it. My father tried to explain to him that they were one- dollar coins and not quarters, and the man wouldn't speak to him and he was very insulted. The food was not as good as it normally is either I ordered shrimp tempura bento box for $27. It was overcooked and I didn't get any shrimp. I didn't say anything, but I will not be going back there. My father tried to talk to him one last time before we left, and the man yelled at him said he was the owner. He didn't care if he never came back and to get out of his store. Don't worry, we will never come back.The old owners never would have disrespected a customer in this way. We are very sad that they are gone and miss them very much. Tonkatsu ramen was very good! Loved all the toppings that came with it (minus the red ginger). Chasu was edible (good amount of meat to fat unlike some other places). Could use a little more broth, but overall solid ramen. Server was sweet to the kids. Super cute restaurant/set up, reminds me a little bit of Daikokuya in Little Tokyo LA. We almost went to Menya bc kids only wanted ramen, but I personally don't love their ramen (very fatty tasting). This place didn't pop up on yelp for some reason. So glad we passed by and gave it a try. We'll definitely be back again and again to support Chompage. Very solid/best ramen North of SF we've found so far!! Warm, delicious soup with great service! I came here for an early dinner after a long walk with friends and we were starved and chilled. So there was this place in Japantown that had the best udon/soba soup that you could get with tons of toppings and I was really craving it and they had it! So I ordered the tempura udon with soba noodles and it was delicious. We also got an order of takoyaki which had nice chunks of octopus and was really well seasoned. Our friends had their dog with them so we sat outside. They have heat lamps. The server also brought the dog a cup of water which was so sweet. -TO GO- Chonmage happened to have Japanese curry on their menu, so of course I HAD to try it. I LOVE Japanese curry, and have been trying different Japanese curry places around the Bay Area! I got both the karaage and katsu curry, and while the curry is the same, the chickens had very different textures. I personally think the chicken katsu was better than the karaage, and had more chicken. The curry itself did not taste like the golden curry, so I'm very glad for that (as I have tried a few places that is just the ready-made golden curry cubes.
