This place is such a cool spot, but very inconsistent. The service is VERY hit or miss.. either very friendly or dismissive and inattentive. I also find the drinks to be inconsistent as well. When they had their Christmas drinks, I had ordered Buddy the Elf, which, by its description, was more of a coffee based drink. It was absolutely disgusting, I couldn't even finish it. It tasted like coffee mixed with orange juice. Nowhere in the description did it even mention anything about fruit/juice. Therefore I tell you this to provide context to the nice patio atmosphere on this pleasant Sunday. Waiter was extremely nice and offered me a delicious cool beverage so I went with the Space Pilot. It's was theatrically presented in a Mandolorian style cup garnished with flowers and a burning incense stick. The drink was a combination of rums and other delicious things. Fun experience from the moment we walked in. Justin was our server and bartender and so spot on with his drink recommendations to match our tastes. My partner had the flaming zombie...fun and tasty. I had the mai tai which was fresh, as opposed to the syrupy ones I've had elsewhere. The rum was generous and flavorful, and the presentation added to the experience. When the bar got busy, Woody jumped in to help serve and was just as much as an expert with the menu. The atmosphere was relaxed but fun (it was still early in the evening. lol) PS. Many of the drinks come in fun tiki glasses which you can purchase. My husband's drink came in a Star Wars cup (looked a little like a tiki Boba Fett) and my drink was served in a robot. The drinks here are strong -- if something says "limit one per person", it's because drinking multiples might come with unpleasant consequences! On Sunday nights, the Maiz de la Vida food truck is there, offering chips, queso, and tacos to complement Chopper's tropical,fruity concoctions. I came here late on a Saturday night and had a lovely experience. When half of our large party arrived, we were given the option of sitting in the covered outdoor area at a large table or at the bar inside. We opted to sit outside but eventually decided it was too chilly, and, even though we asked to move inside AFTER our server brought us waters and turned the heat on for us, she was super friendly about it, and didn't make us feel bad at all (even though we of course did feel a little bad about it). Additionally, they gave us ample warning about last call and made sure we all had time to get one last order in. I do wish they didn't turn the lights on so soon, as my last drink didn't get to be enjoyed in the full tiki ambiance, but alas I guess that's what we get for going so late. I had a Painkiller and a Robo Zombie, two of my favorite tiki drinks (or versions of my favorite tiki drinks), and they were both fantastic. There is an open air feel which bring a beachy vibe to east Nashville. We sat at the bar for about 10 minutes before being greeted with two glasses of water. The bartender never acknowledged us. Then we see the manager possibly abscond the bartender (which made the process longer). A lady took our order finally, but then stood and seemingly gossiped with a customer for a minute or five. Long story short... we waited a total of 35 minutes and there was still a lot of tickets in line and everyone working was moving at a sloth's pace. Mr. Manager did nothing to jump in and help. He simply walked around with his hands on his hips. He said sorry to a few people but that "it would be a while." Never said anything to us. Oh wait, he checked our ID's when we walked in. Said "Hey, I.D. Thanks. You can sit here." I feel like a manager should at least jump in and help. If this place can't handle a half full bar, I'm not sure they will make it. We watched multiple people walk out. If you are going to bartend in Nashville, then you need to be able to handle at least a small crowd. I was excited about Chopper, but it just wasn't up to speed I guess. I ended up leaving and never got my drink. Went to Pearl Diver. They at least know how to make a drink in a timely manner. The bartender took 10 minutes to take our order (although he must have looked our way about 10 times in those 10 minutes. Also, we were literally the only customers at the entire bar at this time). After he took our order he swiped our card and we proceeded to wait 30 minutes for him to make our drinks. We really enjoyed our trip to Chopper. Everything just a tad overpriced, but the drink quality was solid and I reckon you're paying a bit for the ambiance, which was really neat. Visiting Chopper's kinda like taking a mini-vacation. We received very good service at the bar and everyone we talked to seemed very friendly. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but I still feel like Chopper could use a little something more decor-wise. I love the current setup, but if there was something that really made you feel like you were on an island, I think that would go a long way (illuminated sunset wall, waterfall, etc). I can see how that could be a bit of a challenge as the bar is on the smaller side and isn't free-standing, which undoubtedly inhibits their ability to do certain things. We're fans of Chopper, however, and do plan to visit again! read more

Typically I would snag a star for drinks being too sugary, but this is a tiki bar and you signed up for a hangover when you decide to mix sweeteners and liquor. I've been twice and both times have resulted in a noticeable hangover. I also have very little self control in a space featuring delicious drinks, a bangin playlist, and blue black lights. Take my money and my sobriety! The Vibe: The aesthetic is certainly one of the selling points of this garage style tiki bar. This is the tiki bar from 3020 NOT 2020. Charming robots are everywhere from the ceiling to the custom 3D printed tiki mugs. A friend had the misconception that there are robots serving cocktails... Wine is typically my poison and upon reviewing this pretty big drink menu - I didn't quite notice the wine. With that said, I had asked the bartender for some Chardonnay. Well, things kind of turned weird at that point because he had me refer to this wheel of colors. WTF? According to the bartender this place constantly changes their wine menu (COOL!) but, the pretentious attitude given when I didn't understand what could POSSIBLY be a BLUE wine (mad dog 2020 anyone?) totally turned me off completely. As if asking questions about the rotating wheel of colored wine was a total bother. After that was all said and done I ended up with their "green wine" a vinho verde from the motherland. Hey, at least it was something familiar while hanging in East Nashville and verde makes some sense to be their green color. At the end of our visit as we were asking for our bills, another bartender let me know that my wine was on the house. I assume it was because of the weird tension and my total distaste of the wheel of colors. Anyways, that nice gesture was sweet and totally appreciated. I thank you for turning a pretty terrible experience to a positive one. Chopper has a great look and cool vibe, but both of the drinks I tried were not enjoyable. I'm really not that picky with my mixed drinks but honestly, these were hard to get down. They both just tasted like bottom shelf liquor and water. No sweetness at all or any other flavor other than bad rum were detected. I've heard the bourbon drink is good but I didn't want to fork out another $14 when I already had 2 bad drinks. I really want to like this place. Everyone working there was great and it's a fun experience (other than my subsequent stomach ache). I hope they work on those drinks because I'd love to give Chopper another try. read more

I met a friend on a recent Saturday afternoon, we sat at the bar. Ordered some (GREAT) food from the Maiz de la Vida truck and then ordered a drink with a bartender. My friend ordered a tiki drink, and I ordered a Manhattan, excited to see a bottle of Weller 12-year on the bar in front of me. She took our orders, then 10 minutes passed. I noticed she was talking with a man who appeared to be the manager. They both came over. They wanted to "make sure I understood the cost of the Weller 12". The best part is that they then never told me what their cost is (I order this all over town, so I know there's a range, and had already looked at their spirits menu where it said $10/$20, which is cheaper than some places ironically). I said "yes, that's what I ordered" and she said "you know it's expensive." I was dressed, by the way, in a T-shirt and jeans. I said, "yes, I know it's expensive, and I like that whiskey a lot, thank you. That is what I want." After this insult, I ordered my next Manhattan with Basilhayden ($6/12 on their spirits menu) - I think just to passively aggressively play into their "you can't afford the good stuff" narrative. The best part is when I got the bill I was charged for two Manhattans with Weller. Ha! Ha! Ha! You can't make this stuff up. What pretentious assholes.
