Food was actually really good. Service was outrageously bad. For some reason they believe that you get to choose to add a 25$ required tip ON TOP OF a required 18% service fee. Service fee can be required, but you have to earn tip, and I would have actually tipped as one dose but putting it prewritten on there??? That's called money hungry and taking advantage. First time at a Cho-Sen eatery in maybe 20 years. I'd remembered how good the veal-filled dumplings were. Well as you can see from the pic, the ratio of veal to the too-thick dough was about 20%-80%. Rubbery thick dough went out in the 90's. Doesn't everyone prefer delicate dough on their wontons and dumplings? No? Okay, I'll just speak for myself then. The highlight were the crispy, thin wafer-like "soup" noodles. Best I've ever had! Another "best I ever had" was the Sweet & Sour chicken. My dining companions and I were blown away by these pillows of perfection, with the best tasting chicken. The lamb house special was just ok. Personally I prefer plain lamb chops or Indian-restaurant lamb, if you're talking ethnic. The eggplant in garlic sauce was drowning in the sauce which took away from the dish. I have been a lover of cho-sen. We go there for my birthday every year. However, I feel the quality of food has gone under. It's slowly has declined ever since Norman left for Florida. It's busy with the neighborhood enjoying their food. For me it was to greasy. The menu has a special for $25 that gets you soup, choice of fried chicken or egg roll, dessert (we had watermelon and berry sherbet) a container of tea and water is placed on the table. This is limited to certain dinner entries. Otherwise get a platter of food ranging from $21 up. The menu has a selection of fish, chicken, beef and veggies. Reservations are suggested. There is a small dining area that tries hard to serve the crowd. There is a room upstairs to accommodate the over flow or used for private parties. The waiting area is small and for some reason a plant is there taking up room. My sister had her engagement party at Chosen and now married 25 years and still dining there. Let me start off by saying that the food is very good even by non kosher standards. No complaints except that their dumpling dough is extremely thick and Im not a fan of that, texture-wise. However when it comes to service, if you dont know the owners you are treated as second class which isnt fair because my credit card works just as well as anyone else's who is a friend of the owners. As far as I can remember, before covid the service was much better it was always a great experience. Now after covid, the staff is rude and sarcastic, they neglect bringing out the tea, noodles, and sauces which they used to put out right when the guests were seated before ordering anything off the menu. Why do guests need to ask for chopsticks at a chinese restaurant? Asking for anything extra from staff is like asking for a favor. Dude, im tipping you, but if you dont care about tips, keep up the rudeness. Takeout is your best option at Chosen to avoid a bad experience because hospitality doesnt exist at Chosen. read more

The food was better than I thought it would be, and the service was incredible. From ordering to getting our food was about 5 min. The waiters consistently refill your water (that's something you'll either love or hate). The room was also nice, so it's functional for a family outing or a date night. read more

Does kosher mean bland? Definitely not, but the food here is as bland as can be. Panda Express has way more flavor. We had the general tso's chicken, a house special. It was a plate of large breaded chunks of white meat chicken in a thick red sauce with virtually no flavor. Along with the beef fried rice, both dishes made up for the lack of real spices and flavor by using lots of oil. Atmosphere was pleasant and clean and service was good. read more

This is by far one of the best Kosher restaurants my family and I have ever enjoyed. I have dinned here with clients, business partners, and celebrated special family occassions, in addition to catering and ordering to go meals. The service is impeccable, the ambiance suits formal and informal diners, cleanliness is top notch, waiters are very attentive, and food is delicious. Eunice the Maître D knows returning guests by name. She and all supporting staff genuinely greet you and cater to your needs. They will go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied. Food is okay nothing crazy . Service is HORRIBLE. Waiters ignore you. I was sit near the bathroom and people from the party room were constantly walking back and forth not even 2 inches away from our table and seats with out masks. We asked the waiter to ask the people from the party to wear masks going to the bathroom since our table was so close to it. The waiter ignored our request so we spoke to the manager. The manager was extremely rude about the situation and had told us if we do not like the rules leave or don't come back to the restaurant. Kosher does not have to mean overly greasy, fatty, vegetable-less food served at this restaurant. Over the years, I have been to Chosen Island several times. Each time it has gotten worse and worse. My final visit was for a private dinner party. My wife ordered sweet and sour chicken...we were shocked by the result. It was just breading. There was literally no chicken in some of the 'nuggets'! The few pieces of chicken that were there were horrendous with seemingly nothing more than clumps of grease! To add insult to injury, it was served with no vegetables. I immediately alerted the waiter. He said he could not return the entree because the plate had been part of a package. I told him to get the manager to whom I told him I would be glad to pay for a different entree. He quickly said "no" and walked off. At least the 'Diet' chicken I ordered was edible. Sadly it was extremely poorly portioned - who on a diet should be given not one but two huge chicken breasts?! So to recap: the food is repugnant and the service downright rude. Stay clear of this place and expect more from a kosher restaurant. read more

Very good , tasty food as far as Kosher Chinese is concerned but food is a little too greasy, and too much heavy sauce for my liking and I ended up having a stomach ache after . Very pleasant atmosphere. Only been there for 2 parties and each time I found the service to good. Would like to have had some of their sushi. :) Parking is a pain in that area, you will most likely have to use a meter. For someone looking to have a party at a Kosher Chinese food place, I would recommend this place but definitely try to ask for lighter sauce. read more

Went here tonight and was really impressed. It was a packed house, two floors completely filled on a Sunday night, but nevertheless they managed to quickly somehow get us a table. The staff is nice and cares about the customers, new and old. The service was lightning fast. We hardly waited 10-15 min for our food to come out. Their portions were large and the food was fresh ... We shared an egg roll(was soo surprisingly good), a main dish (cashew chicken) and also shared the beef fried rice. All were awesome. We were hungry and we could only finish half of both dishes.. & You know the foods really good when you're focused on your plate and forget to talk to the people you're with. I must say I really think Chosen island is one of the best kosher Chinese spots in NYC, period. Definitely come and try it. We ended up paying $43 total and had a really satisfying meal. The warmth of the staff is noticeable. Yes, dishes can be expensive when compared to non-kosher food but the pricing is in-line with higher end kosher restaurants. It's a really good solid restaurant. The lunch menu is really really cool because you get a soup of your choice, the main dish, a nice small dessert and a can of tea. All four $13-$14. I don't understand the negative reviews here. But everybody might have different expectations or experiences. Quality has been steady over the many times I came here over the years. Since my family eats only kosher food, I cannot compare CI with non-kosher Chinese food, but over the years we've eaten at practically every kosher Chinese restaurant in NY-NJ, (from the legendary Moshe Peking on) and CI is at or near the top of the list for kosher American-Chinese cooking (obviously not authentic Chinese) and a reasonably good value. Portions are very large (we always take home for another meal), food is tasty, extremely broad menu, staff is competent and accommodating. My wife and I eat at CI very often, and we've never been disappointed. read more

However today I placed an order at 4:15 and was told the pick up would be ready at 5:30. however the food was not ready until after 6 o'clock.
