Be your own judge. I just went and had the fish egussi with yam fufu. This was SO delicious. Savory stew with a delicate flaky white fish. The stew and fufu melts in your mouth. I asked for spice level 5/10, and it was perfect. I couldn't stop eating it. The food came out quickly, and the staff was super nice, and helped me decide what to order. Service is horrible. I ordered food at 6:50 was told it would be done by 7:20 once I got there at 7:30 my food was not done. It now is 8:09 and I still have not received my food. At this point I am leaving. No apology no nothing. If I order takeout that's because I don't want to dine in ESPECIALLY during this pandemic. There was only 5 people in the whole restaurant so it wasn't like they were super busy. If I could give them less than 1 start I would. They really should work on customer service. read more

We've been to Choukouya several times and have never been disappointed. The peanut sauce with beef and Eba is one of our favorites. We've also had the red snapper, the meat pie, and the Thiebou Dienn. All of the dishes are so flavorful and fresh. The service is attentive and friendly. This place is truly a gem. read more

All the bad feedback is accurate! First off I ordered online and they have several menus online that say something different and the one I viewed said the red snapper came with jollof rice and fried plantains...all I got was the snapper and a extra small "salad" and the "salad" was in the box with the hot fish. So not smart! But anyway I called to inform them that I didn't get any sides and the manager pretty much told me there was nothing he could do because they changed the menu and all sides are sold separately. Which on the menu I viewed and ordered from said my meal came with sides. So instead of acknowledging the errors the manager refused to make the situation right. I will not support a restaurant who can't afford to offer sides with their meals and hasn't communicated effectively with customers by changing all menus they have online. As far as the food...the fish was NOT memorable and the meat pie was burnt. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. And the place was empty on a Saturday night (9pm) and that says it all and I understand why! Oh well I tried to support this small businesses. read more

Service is horrible. Didn't even get a chance to try the food because we were basically ignored while sitting at the bar. Took longer than it should have to even get a glass of water. Asked to place drink orders and waited a substantial amount of time only to have the bartender make someone's drink who ordered after us. Sadly, wouldn't recommend. read more

An exquisite and delightful dining experience in an unexpected location in Cleveland. Do not be put off that you are entering a tax office and please continue onwards to the dining room through the small lobby. Unless you need to get your taxes done, then by all means eat a great meal and fulfill your obligations. The restaurant is absolutely a gem. We got yassa, fufu with chicken peanut sauce, and catfish. There are a variety of classic dishes from West Africa, which I had only limited exposure to and the staff is super helpful in making your first few picks. I recommend you take their gently delivered guidance. I thought the decor was well done and transformed the space and the staff + owners made sure to come over and say hi. I assume as they get busy not every visitor will get the white glove treatment, but my father and I were touched by their dedication. I hope that the Scene or other local publications begins to pick this one up as Choukouya's food deserves to be more widely tasted. read more

Wanted to try some Nigerian food. Be ready for spicy! I tried the red snapper with spices and it was delicious. My friend had the fufu and boy- too spicy for my liking but the pounded yam "Dudu" to my surprise was very light and fluffy as opposed to it looking heavy like...dough. Char was an excellent server guiding us through things to try. I'm giving it 4 stars because booths weren't wiped clean/remnants of someone's rice on booth bench and table. My experience was a nice change, I was Greeted by a very pleasant Hostess, she give me a quick overview of the Menu and seated Me at the Bar. The Bartender further shared his views of the Menu. Food is BAD. Horrible. This is my experience. Bought powder yam & egusi soup. Powder yam was the size of a child's fist, and the egusi tasted like it was cooked 2 weeks AGO, then frozen, and warmed up in the microwave to serve the guest. I only come on Reggae nights. It's never super packed which is fine. So I fail to understand why it takes so long to get a drink. O wait maybe it's because the bartenders have no idea what they're doing. I'm the middle of making my drink they start talking to other customers of just walk away & start doing other things while I stand there. nice place. Great Music. Choukouya was an experience like no other restaurant I have visited, from the decor to the seating to the menu options, it was quite unique! The staff was very friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed sitting at our colorful yellow table. My husband ordered something that was made out of melon seeds. I don't remember what it was called. It was delicious, but very fatty and it upset his stomach. I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a meat pie that was advertised as "the best thing that will ever happen to you". That's a really bold claim! Well, it wasn't the best thing that ever happened to me... Shocker haha... And I have had much better meat pies. It tasted very very oily and was $3. The meat tasted cheap but the seasoning was powerful. What I appreciate about this place is their uniqueness. However, my husband felt sick after his meal. Something I am skeptical about is how they advertise on their menu how much they season everything. Apparently their secret is in their spice. I am skeptical about this because you can hide a lot about a piece of meat with enough seasoning. Meat may not be or may not taste fresh, but if enough seasoning and spice is added, it could taste okay. So you are going here to enjoy the seasoning. Anything can taste good with enough seasoning. I had a friend highly recommend this restaurant so I suggested it to my family for dinner. There were only 3 of us in total. When we arrived at 7:30pm there were only 4 people at the bar, a table of 6, a table of 2, & now the 3 of us. It took until 8:15pm just for us to receive 1 of the drinks the 3 of us ordered-the other 2 came 15 minutes later along with our appetizer. Fast forwarding to us waiting an additional 50 minutes for our entrees. That also came out staggered. In addition to individually being served in a staggered manor, my meal it's self came staggered receiving some of the meal almost half way through my eating. The table of women next to us didn't have enough silverware & one woman had to wait 15 minutes with her food sitting in front of her getting cold unable to eat- just waiting for a fork. This was by far the worst service experience myself, my brother, or my cousin have ever had in any restaurant. Once the food finally came it had great flavor but nothing that was worth the two hour wait. We were so excited when we arrived to be let way down. read more

We just left your establishment on 2/13/21 at 10:30pm and we are disgusted with our treatment. We have supported your establishment time and time again even when the consistently and professionalism was not all the way together. Tonight, we tried calling several times to place an order for food just for no one to answer. Then when we get there, we are stopped by someone who says that they are the owner and who is clearly intoxicated asking us if we have a reservation. We explained that we tried calling but no one picked up. He then went on to say that his sister is having a party of some sort. We are not quite sure what this has to do with us getting food. We ask him several times are we able to get food or not and was not told anything but confusion because of his incoherency. We are highly displeased as we always go above and beyond for our Black and African people. We will not continue to support a place where management is less than great. Again, we have supported several times even when the service was bad but this is the last time. Please do better. read more

I went with my fiancé, son and his wife and our bill was bananas( not high at all) we each had an appetizer and a main course, we also had 2 bottles of wine in total. the food was very good. it took a while coming out but it was made to order so what do you expect. I had ordered my food off of doordash , it had arrived 30 minutes late by a crackhead. My food was cold & my drink was in a tepurware container. Once I had opened the container with my drink it spilled because I was so full. Then I decided to open my pasta & I tried it because I thought there would be no problem with it. I then took a bite and to my dismay it was unseasoned and mushy. I was so disappointed. I decided to try the shrimp in my pasta, it was unseasoned and tasted like it was fishy. I decided to give it one last chance , and put salt, pepper, and addition Cajun seasoning to the "Cajun" pasta. It was still nasty. I am honestly so disappointed. Came in for an impromptu lunch. Blown away by the food! Unique flavors for the area and a refreshingly different experience.

I went there on my birthday with some family and friends. It took an hour for someone to come to the table and ask up about drinks. Another hour to get them and a total of 3 hours to get the food. Some of the people in my party left without eating because it was taking so long. I was so embarrassed and just sad. Meanwhile the hostess is saying all she does is wrap silverware and if we dont like just go somewhere else. I called the next business and talked to the owner. He did apologize and say he would take care of me and my husband's dinner next time we come in. Fast forward a few weeks. I finally drop back in and called to talk to him to remind him and make sure he knew we were coming in. TOOK FOREVER AGAIN to get food. Service sucked AGAIN. THEN he only took $18 (25%) off my bill. Not what he told me, not what we discussed about him making it right after my birthday incident. The owner would not even come out and talk to me. Had someone come and tell me it would be 45 minutes to an hour before he had time to see me. Just horrible. The sad thing is it was 5 other tables complaining too and I felt so sorry for them because I knew what the end result would be. I am never ever going back and give my hard, HARD earned money to a place that do not give a shit about their customers. I am never going to suggest this place to anyone and do my best to stop people from going their to save them the headache. IT'S NOT WORTH IT. read more
