I've driven by this place a few times and was curious how the boba was- so one day while in Chinatown my husband and I decided to stop by after lunch. The shop is fairly small and quaint with the super cute painting of the chow chow pups on the wall! When we came in- they had menus on the TV and on the counter in front of us. I randomly stumbled across Chow Tea even though I've probably driven past it a hundred times... so glad I finally went in! The shop is super clean and the people working there were really nice. I was curious about the oolong boba, but they were out since I went later at night. I ended up getting oolong milk tea with regular boba, and it was SO good. You can really taste the tea, which I loved. Usually I get 25% sugar, but the person taking my order let me know it might not be sweet enough since they use sweetened condensed milk instead of syrup (which is different from other spots). I got 50% sugar, and it was perfect. If you like it less sweet, 50% is the way to go here. Definitely planning to come back and try the oolong boba next time. As one of the smallest tea shops in Bellaire Asiatown, it seems plausible to miss Chow Tea entirely, unless one knows exactly where to look. Located inside of the corner stall of the Lion Square strip mall, it relies almost exclusively on the foot traffic from the neighboring pho spots and supermarkets. It may not look like much, but the customer service is on point, the selection is vast, and the drinks range from good to excellent. The interior is so tight that there is just enough seating for 6 people split across 3 tables and even then it's a tinge claustrophobic. The space is bright and clean and the prominent mural along the back wall is too pretty to ignore. The way the neon lighting + decor is laid out, it's prime for an IG photoshoot of some kind. Drinks wise, they make one of the meanest Vietnamese iced coffees I've had in recent memory. The slurps have this velvety afterfinish, the sweetness of the condensed milk is a bit more intense than the equivalent cup that isn't $5. I am strangely into their oolong mlk tea and have had good success with their avocado shakes. I am not particularly fond of their prices, shcdfddgdffffff I'm still here every other week, ordering up heaps of the coffee or enjoying the caffeine buzz that comes with. I was looking around the Chinatown area for a particular dog. I could not find it at Pet's Mart, not at my local shelter, but one place, Chow Tea. I was on a curiosity trip and seen the business was recommended here on Yelp. What really caught attention is the sign. I was definitely a bit biased because I am dog owner and found the mascot, the Chow chow, very eye catching. But it just got even better, just like the chow chow is a very cozy type of dog, the shop is very cozy as well. But I liked it. It would be a nice more intimate setting versus bringing a group. It was my first time visiting so I had to ask for what the staff would say is their best drinks on the menu. They pointed to a toasted coconut milk tea and the oolong with a few additional ones. I went with both. I did try the toasted coconut milk tea and I liked it. I never thought it would be an addicting flavor but I couldn't stop drinking more of it. Overall I found the visit very enjoyable. I have had a list of a few places that have been "hidden gems" in my collection this year. Chow Tea has made my list. I am fine with paying extra for no ice and to fill it to the top but that's what you call nickel and dime. 1.50 just for you to top it off is ridiculous in my opinion and that'll lose some stars. Another local milk tea is coming to HTown! Woohoo! Their soft opening is today! As we came in we received the warmest welcome from all of the staff! The shop is smaller, order and go kinda shop. Very clean, simple, aesthetically pleasing. Their menu ranges from milk tea to coffee to fruit tea. Today we wanted to try their toasted coconut milk tea with cheese pudding. I wanted to adjust the sweetness level but there are no options unfortunately. However upon trying their drinks, they are not too sweet which I loveeeee!! Drinks are very creamy, balanced and fragrant. I love that I can smell the toasted coconut on top. Their cheese pudding tasted unique in a good way, too over the top cheesy.
