I love a greasy spoon, a dive, just as much as the next person, but Chris' has gone downhill over the years. And the sloping floor doesn't help... On my last visit, the potato in my hash browns was undercooked to the point of being crunchy. That's a big fail. They make breakfast all day! No excuses when it comes to hashbrowns. By now, they should be able to do those right, blindfolded and spun around 10 times. The coffee is bottomless, but it needs to be because it's so weak drinking 3 cups is like drinking 1 'real' coffee. Yes, it is cheap. Yes, it is a Binghamton institution. I've heard people rant and rave about Chris' for quite a while, and decided to check it out recently. Prices are low and portions are high, so that's always a plus. As far as the food though, I was not impressed. My wife got a ham and cheese omelet with onion. The ham was left out. OK, accidents happen. But to fix it they brought over a slice of warmed up ham steak. I guess it's the thought that counts? Also, there was more onion than egg, by far. I'm a huge onion fan, and I couldn't eat it without picking some of the onion out. I got sausage gravy and biscuits. The sausage gravy was good, but the biscuits were really dry and flaky. On the plus side, the service was good, and my coffee cup never ran dry. Also, they're cash only. Which I'm not holding against them. Just a minor inconvenience. read more

A great little spot for a typical diner breakfast-right downtown. The bustling din of a busy diner in a really basic (perhaps a bit crooked/off-kilter) improvised atmosphere-it's definitely larger inside than I had assumed from the outside after walking by dozens of times on First Fridays. Seems like it gets pretty busy..you may not get a table right away, but the service is quick and the food is good. I'm sure I'll be back for breakfast again. read more

Staying close by for a wedding, Chris's served my brother Jim and I an excellent breakfast. Huge Greek omelet and coffee for me, bagel and coffee for Jim for $10 total with tip. Beat that, local hotel! Good food, nice waitress, busy as we left but pretty quiet as we talked and ate. Stop in and enjoy, they do it right at Chris's! Came back on Sunday and Chris knocked it out of the park. Great corned beef hash, big cheesy veggie omelet and great tasting coffee for $12, with super nice service. Love this place! Having gone to this place since I was a child, I can say with complete and utter certainty that this diner is absolutely amazing. They have great food for affordable prices! I come from a low income family; we have always been able to afford going to Chris'. The staff are extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is just outstandingly warm and cozy. Yes, I'll admit, it is a little small; but what they lack in size, they make up for in quality. This diner is great for anyone. They're friendly and get to know you; like a real diner atmosphere should be. They have quite a few regulars, which just goes to show that they're definately worth coming back to. With that said, when I'm married and have children, I hope to be able to bring them here, just like I came here all those years ago. Good service, great food, and above all, reasonable prices. A wonderful little diner located in DT Binghamton. It's a little more spacious than the Village Diner off of Floral, so you'll typically have better luck getting seating. Had the meat lovers omelet which was amazing. The meats inside the omelet were not over cooked and dried out like other places I've been to. The coffee was also good and never went empty. Probably because their food is always a good decision, the wait could get up to an hour- so i would suggest going during off times like weekdays during school hours! My go-to dish is the corned beef hash! Prior to Chris', I've never had anything like it but since trying it, I try to go at least once a week! Chris' Diner is a fantastic little diner. The portions are always huge and hearty, and always have a delicious home cooked taste. I love to get bacon, eggs, and corned beef hash with toast, and it tastes just like something my parents would have whipped up from scratch. Also, the prices are extremely affordable. I can get a huge amount of food for only $5! I would definitely recommend eating here for any meal. The only downside is that they only take cash, not card, which is annoying. They do have an ATM in the diner, but it will charge you extra. Other than that, I love this place! read more

I was supposed to take a Greyhound bus, but it was arriving a little late, so I came here with my friend. I got the Greek Omelet to go, which came with the omelet, hash, and my choice of toast (I got Rye). The omelet was good. There was a large serving of hash, so I got full. There were also about 4 pieces of toast. Each one wasn't big on its own, but there was still a lot to eat. This was a very filling meal. The waitress was also extremely affable, asking if I wanted any ketchup, utensils, or napkins to go. Came here as a pit stop on a road trip from Jersey to Rochester. It was conveniently located exactly at the half way mark. The town itself is a ghost town, burned/abandoned houses and buildings on every block. I'm pretty sure its just a town to drive thru on a road trip. Noticing how sketchy the town was, I was beginning to recede my recommendation of stopping here, but I'm glad we went! We were a party of 6 during their Sunday brunch rush. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because we were literally sitting elbow to elbow. But the food was amazing and ridiculously cheap! We all got brunch plates because only breakfast is served on Sundays. Unfortunately, they had run out of steak that day. Chris' Diner is on the southern tip of Gallery Row on State Street. I first noticed it driving by on a cold February morning. It's windows were frosted and inviting, due to the interior heat and large number of people within. Have wanted to try ever since. The layout and decor is what you would expect for a diner. The menu as well. No surprises there. At 9:00am on a Sunday, the place was packed. We had to stand for about 5mins before a table opened up, and word to the wise, grab that table even if it hasn't been bussed yet. A ton of people swooped in looking for tables, and judging by the looks on their faces, it was a "I don't care if you've been waiting. If I get a table, its mine, sucka" type of playing field. The breakfast was quite delicious. My wife got the western omelet and LOVED it. Goey with cheese and fresh veggies, it was quite tasty. I got the 2 pancakes/2 eggs/sausage/coffee and found my eggs to be perfect (sunny side up). The blueberry pancakes were tasty, but not the best I've ever had (and they were huge. At least a foot in diameter. Binghamton seems to have a thing with oversized pancakes.) Oh, and I wasn't the fan of the coffee, but its rare that a diner has "really good" coffee. So I wasn't particularly thrown off by it. Oh, I was also pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the crowd. Lots of churchgoers. Quite a few 20 somethings. Some seniors. Families. I used to go here on the weekends all the time after many late nights out while in college. This diner opens very early I believe to service truck drivers who may be passing through town. Anyway, it is actually quite bigger on the inside and we never experienced much of a wait. The eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee combo was a staple for this college kid's wallet.
