Wanted to get brunch with friends here. As me and my party walked in, there was a group in front of us so we had to hold the door open for a few moments cause there was no space for us. As we waited for their party to be seated, one waitress rudely told us to shut the door immediately, effectively making our party wait out in the cold. There is no way the door was open for more than one minute, we we're literally watching the party before us start to get taken care of when she did this. We we're moments from having enough space to get in quickly. We were all shocked at how rude this was. Will not ever be coming back. Stopped in for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. It is a clean older diner. The staff was very friendly. It is an older diner, but is well kept... even the restroom. I had the angus steak burger with fries.... The burger was wonderful, juicy, tasty on a nice bun with sliced onion and lettuce. Fries were done well , none burnt and consistent. My son had the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and tomato sauce. He said it was very good and he "wolfed" it down. We took some dessert to go, a cinnamon twist and some blueberry pie. The bacon burger had a thin patty, almost as thin as the cheese, also unseasoned patty. The demographic that frequents this diner is older. Sugar free options are on the menu and that should've been a sign they wouldn't be using salt to season. Today was my first time at this diner. The service was absolutely beautiful. Our server was so so kind and welcoming. She was on top of anything and everything we needed. The food came out fast, hot and tasted PHENOMENAL!! My boyfriend and I ordered quite a bit of food (like 3 different things each) and my total was only 50$. Growing up in Vestal, Skylark was an icon of my childhood. After moving away and after the pandemic hit, I hadn't been for years, but while visiting home over the summer I went back with a friend, and aside from no longer being open 24/7 (which is a bummer, but they're still open later than I think every other diner in the area), they're just as I remember. The menu is classic diner fare with all day breakfast. The food is mostly unremarkable but satisfying, and if you're craving really stereotypical American diner grub it will fully hit the spot. The omelettes are the thing on the menu that I keep going back to, and the potato pancake side (small fried potato patties, almost like hashbrowns, but denser and with herbs) is one thing here that stands out to me as pretty unique. Ask for the garlic parm sauce to go with. Another recommendation would be to ask for the blueberry muffin grilled, or any muffin, really. I'm a fan of all of the baked goods. The portions are very filling and it's good value for your money. The vibe is what really makes the place. I wouldn't call it a "must-visit" based on food alone, but the overall experience is wonderful. The front of the restaurant is a real retro diner, the back doesn't have that train car look but is still old-school in design (and has some bigger tables for large groups). You will see people of all ages hanging around and the general atmosphere always feels very positive to me. In all my years of coming here I've had exactly one experience with a waitress who was less than pleasant; every other time I can remember, everyone has been so sweet and if you come back they will remember you. Skylark is one of the top diners in the area especially for lunch and dinner. I love their buffalo chicken wrap with ranch and fries. They have the best fries and daily soups and desserts. The price is pretty low for the quality of food a wrap and fries with a drink is less than most fast food places and a bigger portion. This place has always been a favorite of mine. It was actually the last place I ate out, the day before the virus shut everything down. Since reopening, they are no longer a 24 hour spot, which saddens me, but I just had an amazing experience there that I wanted to share. My party of 4 sat ourselves, as is normal protocol, and were brought place settings and menus and list of specials almost immediately. They have changed their menu to a double sided laminate sheet, from the big book they once had. They still do serve breakfast all day, which to me, is always a huge bonus! The prices have gone up a bit, but to be honest, the portion sizes have too. There was one server in our area who was quite busy at first, so it took a few minutes to get our order placed, but I don't ever get frustrated with that when I see they are busy with other tables. I ordered my standard bottomless coffee and a steak, egg and cheese wrap with my favorite sweet potato fries on the side, instead of hash browns. It was amazing! I was expecting more of a thin steak, like you'd find on a Philly cheese steak, but it was actual pieces of tender and juicy steak! Yum!! And the fries were as good as always and not overpriced. I've definitely been to places that serve them as though they are coated in gold, and charge a lot for them. I was charged the same as if I was having the hash browns. Others at the table ordered burgers and a spaghetti dinner. The burgers were cooked to perfection, and the dinner comes with meatballs, a side salad and bread, and was enough for 2 meals, easily! We took dessert to go, and I was so happy to get both (yes two!) the rice pudding and chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. Both are made in house and are amazing. The strawberry short cake is a go to for me, also, but the strawberry is frozen and sweetened, not fresh berries. The shortcake really does balance it out, but I've never been able to finish one bowl by myself! This spring, they will be opening a patio on the side and they have refinished the back room with brighter paint, so it really is a very cheery environment back there now. The front of the diner retains very much the "original old time diner" feel, but they will be upgrading the counters soon, according to our server. One thing to note, they do offer soda in different sizes, as they do charge for refills. Keep that in mind when placing your order! I've never had a bad meal here. I grew up in NJ where diners are the THING. We stopped here after coming down from Watkins Glen and had a nice father's day meal. The veggie omelette was made well and packed with vegetables. My sister ordered the strawberry shortcake pancakes which was a giant portion of everything, including whipped cream. The home fries were tasty, although I wished they were a bit crispier. My dad liked his french toast and ham. But best of all was the service. Everyone was super pleasant. A very typical American diner, but if that's what you're craving they do the job well and the prices are SO MUCH better than NJ. read more
