Even though he's now out-of-network for us, we've chosen to stay. That says a lot. The reality is dental insurance hasn't kept up -- reimbursement rates are practically stuck in the early 2000s -- and many excellent dentists have had to make tough business decisions. I completely understand it. Quality care and experienced staff deserve fair compensation. Dr. Wong is thoughtful, thorough, and never rushes appointments. He explains things clearly and takes a conservative approach, which I truly appreciate. His hygienists are fantastic -- gentle but meticulous -- and you leave feeling like your teeth got the five-star treatment. The front desk team is consistently polite, organized, and efficient. Scheduling is smooth, billing is transparent, and they're always patient with questions. Great dentistry, great team, and well worth staying with -- insurance or not. read more

Although Dr. Wong has been my dentist for a while, he has yet to perform any involved procedures for me. I take this as a good thing, because this reassures me that he isn't trying to make the most profit from me. My impression is someone who is acting in my best interest. I will consider giving him an additional star once he adds a crown, performs a root canal, or some other involved procedure. He has a calm and pleasant demeanor, which I also take as a good thing. Being new to the area, I was looking for a dentist and chose Dr. Hamamoto based on proximity to my work and great reviews. I booked a first appointment and although wasn't given any specific instructions showed up 10 minutes early thinking there might be some pre-appointment paperwork. Needless to say, I wasn't able to finish the outdated and unnecessarily intrusive form (why do you need to know where my husband works?) before they called me in. They told me to come in anyways. As soon as I came in the doors, I was bombarded by questions from numerous assistants that could have been resolved if I had been allowed to finish the form or been given proper instructions to come early. No one seemed to notice that they were completely overwhelming me. A point of contention was my x-rays -- I had had a full set of x-rays within the past 2 years, had no current dental issues, and didn't want another full panel of x-rays (excuse me if I prefer not to subject myself to radiation). I emailed the office my previous x-ray images and they finally took no for an answer. I was feeling rattled but decided to take some deep breaths and just get through the appointment. As I checked out of the appointment, I decided that I would like to get new retainers. The receptionist said she would put in a request to my insurance and that it would take up to 6 weeks to hear back. It was late October then, and by 6 weeks it was holiday season so I didn't sweat it when I didn't hear back. I was also slow to follow up in the new year. But in February, I finally called to ask about the retainer and was told the person who knew about this was out but they'd call me back the next business day. Well it's been 10 days now and I still haven't heard back. So I'm over it. I already got a recommendation for a new dentist and will be taking my business elsewhere. No need for me to chase down the dentist's office about work they should be doing when I wasn't happy with my experience anyways. Perhaps you may find my experience strange when Dr. Hamamoto has so many good reviews. I thought the same thing as well. Until I received at least 3 messages after my first appointment asking me to leave them a positive review if I had a good experience (but if I had a bad experience, to just call them!). read more

I had a few composite teeth that needed to be replaced from childhood... so last year Dr Kris put veneers on my top front six teeth. This was obviously a big decision and change, so I've waited a year to write this review just to make sure I was happy with the results over time. In short: she did an excellent job. The new veneers look great -- way better than my original composites ever did. We had several visits beforehand to design the new veneers, and then a couple more to get them in, and adjusted afterwards. Dr Kris and her staff were always very friendly, and accommodating with schedule changes through the process. It took me a while to get used to the new feel, and I did have to revisit a few times to adjust some bite pressure. My bite still feels different than it used to, so I'm concluding that most likely this is just a price of changing the shape of my teeth. Whenever I've asked for for Dr Kris or her partner to help me adjust the bite pressure, they've been very quick to schedule a drop-in appointment and happy to try working on it with no additional charges. Since then, I've also been coming here for my regular dental visits and have only good things to say about the 3 different folks who were available those days. read more

1 star for the nice garden view from the waiting room I actually went to Dr Hamamoto because of the recommends from yelp. I'm a wuss at the dentist. My previous dentist had a 'no pain ever' policy because he believed that if you didn't feel any pain at the dentist you'd be more likely to come back in for regular maintenance. He always offered nitrous for cleanings which I paid for out of pocket (insurance doesn't cover the wuss-factor) Anyhow I made it VERY clear to the staff at Hamamoto's office that I was used to this type of treatment; Twice in writing with their confirmation and twice on the phone before I came in. "Yes, sir. We offer nitrous with cleanings, we'll be sure to set you up in the room with the nitrous." Great! I get there and they get me signed in and they send me to the room for a cleaning (deep cleaning, mind you) and they've got the mask on me but all it's pushing is oxygen. I tell them that it's not right, they fiddle with the tank for a few minutes and then Dr Hamamoto informs me that "the tank is empty and we forgot to order more...but c'mon, it's not like you REALLY need it, right?" :| So yeah, maybe my experience was a bad one because I'm not a tough guy at the dentist, but I was totally put off by her condescending nature especially when it came to my pain/anxiety management. Unprofessional. Doubly disappointing because of Dr Hamamoto's proximity to my office. Things work out though, I have a wonderful dentist in San Francisco now (Jennifer Creelman). Sure it's not convenient to my work but at least I get the treatment that I'm promised. read more

Dr. Hamamoto is by far the best dentist I've ever had! She's able to work wonders and is very personable. She's the first dentist I have had who I don't cringe to visit. She is able to work miracles with your teeth. I've had her fill a few cavities and was completely surprised how my mouth didn't hurt after the novocaine wore off. She said she could give me a prescription for pain-killers, but I've only needed it once. When I first started visiting her, she cut me a decent deal since I was having a considerable amount of work done. I went to Kris years ago, and because she was not respectful of Traditional Chinese Medicine and holistic paradigms of the world , I knew immediately she was not the one for my family. At the time Allison Kumata was there who was great as a dentist and whose customer service was consistently excellent. After that Alex Yen replaced Dr. Kumata, and I thought he was also great. Mave is my favorite person there. She is one of the finest at reception and she recently told me she doesn't handle Dr. Yen's patients anymore. I was speaking to Mave about the changes in protocol and Kris was helicoptering and not giving proper privacy at the front desk area as usual for her. Each and every time I have had to go in to this office for the other dentists over the past several years, Kris has become paranoid in this way. I think she is truly threatened by any paradigm other than her own and does not have the professionalism not the courtesy to simply just "be". She has absolutely no manners and is singularly the most insecure neurotic professional in any field I have ever met. She loves to say "I own this business" every time she gets in my way when I am trying to book with one of the other dentists. That may be true and my hat off to you, Kris for that great achievement. Too bad you don't know how to treat people that are different then how you are. We are moving anyway so I want to thank Dr. Yen, Mave, Dr. Kumata from the past and a few other staff for years of wonderful service. I recommend Dr. Yen if you go to this office. read more

My new favorite dentist hands down. Was looking for a new dentist after years of okay and really bad dentists. Had to try her after reading the review from KQN (The Yelp Review machine with 1200+ reviews) and how she's been taking good care of him for 10 years. Dr. Hamamoto was very warm and friendly, took time out to get to know me and hear my concerns and questions, did not try to sell me on anything I didn't need (unlike so many other dentists), and seemed knowledgeable and thorough in checking and cleaning my teeth. She was telling me how she took over the same practice from the dentist that she had been going to since she was a teenager. Many of her assistants and staff have also been working at the same practice for many years and were friendly too. Bottom line: I've finally found a winner! I rarely give anyone on Yelp 5 stars. I've been coming to Dr. Kumata at this practice for the past year or so. She is great! She's super friendly and I actually had a good time at the dentist. Her cleanings are VERY thorough - nearly an hour long, and all done by Dr. Kumata herself, not a hygienist. Dr. Hamamoto has been my dentist for 5 and a half years. My appointments always start on time, unless I am the one who is late. Once I forgot an 8 am appointment the day after a holiday, but she squeezed me in anyway. She is also personable and professional. I have a small mouth, and Dr. Hamamoto is the first dentist I've had as an adult who did not complain or remark to me how difficult it is to treat my teeth - as if I can do anything about it. If you're an average dentist, then you do adequate work on the average patient. If you're a better-than-average dentist, you can do good work on any patient. Other dentists I've visited in the past seemed to find 2 or more cavities at every visit. My dental hygiene habits have not changed since then, yet Dr. Hamamoto has found the need to fill only two cavities in the 5 years I've been seeing her. She works quickly, explains what she is doing during the treatment, and I have not had any issues with the fillings. read more

I first went to Dr. Hamamoto in the early 90's. maybe 1992 or 93 and I have never had anyone else take care of my dental needs. She is great! i recently developed a toothache while traveling overseas and when i returned to the US, i contacted Dr. Hamamoto to explain my situation and she made arrangements for me to come in so she could take a look. As it turns, i needed some serious dental work done (i.e. root canal) and was able to take care of it. Did I mention that I live in Los Angeles and I drove all the way to Palo Alto to see Dr. Hamamoto? That is how good she is. That is how much I trust her to take care of my pearly whites. When you find someone good, you don't look for a replacement. Because she didn't want me to have to make another trip to Nor Cal, she has this cool 3D printer that was able to make a crown for me and she took care of EVERYTHING in one day! something that normally takes a second visit. I can not say enough about Dr. Hamamoto and her staff and their ability to take care of their patients. read more

Awesome! I went to Dr. Kris after reading the recommendations here. I haven't been to a dentist for over five years, so I was a little nervous, especially after the complaints about pain from one reviewer. Dr. Kris knew right away that my gums were going to be sensitive and put on a topical anesthetic to help me out - that is the first time I've ever had a dentist do that. The whole time she was very nice. She made some small talk, which I don't normally like, but she honestly seemed to take interest in my life (rather than just pretending) and so in the end it was very comforting. We also discussed going invisalign to correct some shifting teeth. She was very open to discussing the cost up front. She even suggested I shop around if I wasn't sure, but I had already done my research online and knew that her price was great. By the time my cleaning was done, her office staff had already called my insurance to check if ortho was covered - which it luckily is. Suffice to say I am actually looking forward to seeing her frequently over the course of my invisalign procedure, and trust that she will take good care of my teeth. I've been coming to these guys since I was young and they've always been great. Dr Kris is great with teeth, but she also takes my other health considerations into account when dealing with my mouth. She always asks me how I'm doing when I see her. What prompted me to write a review today was that I came in for a consultation with the periodontist, Dr Tran. Dr Tran only comes to this office once a month (she has her own business I believe), so it was a little difficult finding time to make an appointment, but boy I'm sure glad I did! Throughout the whole appointment Dr Tran gave me clear explanations of what was going on and what could be done to address the problem. She was kind and compassionate and answered any and all questions I had. We decided not to go forward with surgery at the moment, and she gave me advice as to what could be done in the meantime. It was really great to work with her and I highly recommend her. Then I come to leave and I find out that the consultation was free! I really don't see any reason to go anywhere else. Plus they have a super cool fish tank. Way to go guys! read more

I have had several bad experiences with dentists, but going to Dr. Hamamoto's office really put me at ease. I would go back to her no matter what and recommend her to anyone. I had a cavity that badly needed filling as well as teeth crooked from not wearing my post-braces retainer, and Kris was able to quickly clean up my cavity on short notice in a difficult area and get my teeth realigned with Invisalign within about 6 months! She truly did an excellent job, making the process easy for me and making sure I felt that I was in good hands. She is very efficient, friendly and gentle, as are her dental assistants. Unfortunately, I had to change dentists due to insurance coverage from my job change, and I met up with two other dentist who had great reviews on yelp and/or recommendations from other colleagues, but no one can beat Dr Kris's expertise.
