I saw Dr Barnard this morning in his office in the Clock Tower building in Carmel. I like this new office. He performed a very efficient and thorough full body examination. I had a couple of issues, one he dealt with by freezing and the other dealt with by medication prescriptions. The front office staff seemed very efficient. World class dermatologist. Genuinely comforting bedside manner and great communication. Relaxed office atmosphere and kind front desk staff. You know you're in good hands when your doctor trains other doctors at Stanford. People tend to get nervous before going to the dermatologist, especially if (like Dr. Barnard) they are aggressive about biopsies and cutting/freezing things...but I've learned that this worry is pointless wasted energy where he's concerned. Dr. Barnard is simply amazing at pain-free procedures. He's not going to hurt you and genuinely cares about your comfort level. He uses tiny needles from Japan and administers anesthetic really slowly so you literally don't feel anything. I don't understand how this is possible but it's what he does. (Sorry if this is TMI, but this is the kind of thing I always wish people would put in their Yelp reviews.) read more

Update the billing dispute was resolved and they found the payment that I made. However, Dr. Barnard moved his practice to Carmel, CA. and I'm not driving to Carmel to see him. With driving time and loss of work time it's not worth it. This was the 3rd move this Dr has made since I was seeing him. Used to be in Ryan ranch, then moved to garden court, and then to Carmel. Not sure where he might be next year. And finally the treatment that he gave me (Otezla) did nothing to alleviate the rash/psoriasis that he states I have and now with a new Dr. that states he believes it's been misdiagnosed and not psoriasis at all. And finally the hunt for a new Dermatologist continues as the one after Barnard, I had to suggest what biologicals to use to try to treat me, which he agreed to try as he had a rep from that drug company in that very day, but which did nothing so... I scheduled an appointment to address sun damage and hyper-pigmentation. I was very clear that it was a cosmetic matter when speaking to the receptionist. Two months later, I had my appointment with Dr. Chock. She was friendly, but abrupt. When I explained the reason for my visit she replied, "you should schedule an appointment with one of the nurses". I didn't understand why I hadn't simply been scheduled with a nurse when making the appointment. Fortunately, a nurse named Jillian was able to come in and chat with me. We discussed various treatment options, and she recommended beginning a Retin-A regimen. The following week, I called to request the Retin-A prescription. After five days and no return call, I called the office and spoke with a woman named DeDe. This was on a Tuesday. DeDe told me she would send the prescription over to my pharmacy immediately. On Thursday, I called my pharmacy to confirm it was ready. I was told no prescription had been sent over. The next day, I called Dr. Barnard's office throughout the day but never was able to connect with a human. I left three voicemails stressing the importance of getting the prescription sent that day, as it was a Friday and I didn't want to go into the weekend without it. Never heard back. It has now been a week. Nothing. Other reviewers have also warned about getting sucked into a voicemail loop, never being able to reach a person or receive a return phone call. I wish I had read them before I wasted my time here. Needless to say, I've given up and have scheduled an appointment with a different provider. Do yourself a favor and steer clear. I am so happy that I found this place, I saw Nurse Jillian! She was so thorough and took the time to address all of my needs as well as educate me on the procedure that was about to take place. 3 stars giving the benefit of the doubt. I didn't see Dr Bernard, I saw a woman who was very nice, very professional. She prescribed a medication & I worked with the front office staff to locate the precise pharmacy where the prescription was to be picked up. She said she'd call it in. Not there. Ever. I called the Dr. Office to be put into a constant message cue that never allows for a message to be left. Gave up. Called the office multiple times weeks later to cancel an appt. No answers. No email possibilities or contact through their website. Beware of paying in full after an appointment. One year ago I had a annual exam with a biopsy. Because it was January I paid the full amount since the office was contracted with my insurance. My insurance excepted half of the charged amount and said I am only responsible for half. It has been 14 months, dozens of calls, 3 in person visits and one verbal promise from Art the office manager that I would receive a refund and still no check 2 months later. I have been calling his office for 2 months leaving voicemail after voicemail to clear this bill up. No one has called me back. I went to his office yesterday and found this note that he moved again. The receptionists at Barnard Dermatology are so incredibly rude and incompetent, why a doctor's office couldn't hire more well-rounded and professional people is beyond me (Come on man, really? They're actually worse-mannered than some of the people at the DMV, which should say a whole lot). The day we arrived at the clinic, my mother asked if she could schedule an appointment for my brother because he has recently gotten a severe case of eczema on his finger. The reception lady clearly misunderstood my mother and out of nowhere snapped, "Uh, we can't see him right now because we're a specialty office, you're going to have to wait until our next appointment so just take him to an urgent care, okay?" After my mom repeated her question because the lady clearly misunderstood, she didn't even respond to my mother and instead sat down and began writing something on her desk, leaving my mother hanging. So when my mother asked AGAIN for the third time if she could schedule an appointment, the receptionist rolled her eyes and instructed my mother to, "Just WAIT." First of all, please listen carefully and address the actual question that was asked before you snap at people, you illiterate swine. Second of all, do not address my mother or any of the patients that way. And yes, I'm pissed about the fact that she snapped at my mother who politely made a simple request to schedule an appointment. Two days later, I call the office and the woman from clinic who picked up the phone (probably the same one who sassed my mother) gave me attitude when I called her about an appointment. She scoffed, "We're not open from 12-1... You have to call back during normal business hours, like if you listened, there's actually a reason why you were directed to the automated machine." A little ticked off by her obnoxious voice and tone, I asked, "If you claim your business hours are from 8 am - 5 pm and all of you decide to simultaneously take a break for lunch, shouldn't you include that to your message? And if you're not gonna take any requests from my call, why'd you answer the phone to begin with at 12:35 pm?" She was so taken aback at the fact that I "talked back" to her that she made that high pitched "how dare you" noise and then proceeded to slur together a "Khavea/GOOD/day" and immediately hung up without allowing me to speak. Other than the and snarky and obnoxious front-desk receptionists, Dr. Julie Kenner was genuinely kind and thoughtful upon our visit. She was knowledgeable and informative when I showed her my conditions and when I proceeded to ask questions about the diagnosis. Dr. Kenner's assistant was lovely as well, jotting down thorough notes on Dr. Kenner's instructions for me to take home. Please, rid of those receptionists ASAP because they truly don't deserve to work for such lovely doctors and they evidently give you a bad rep (look at the other Yelp! reviews about how horrendously dumb your receptionists are to ensure that I'm not fabricating how pathetic and unhelpful they are. Perhaps you should take further action and make room for the more willing and deserving receptionists--if I had my own private dermatology clinic, I would make sure I don't hire illiterate and toxic swines to save myself the embarrassment). I have been going to Dr. Barnard for quite a bit now. I find him extremely comfortable to be around and he's always very direct and precise in any questions I may have. I go for a yearly body check up and I can say that no one does it the way Dr. Barnard does. He checks everything, and describes it to his transcriptor in great detail. The current staff (October 2017) is incompetent, unreliable, and should be replaced. Dr. Barnard is a well regarded dermatologist, but something is going on here. They have had multiple recent office moves, many times their phones literally do not work, and his staff has no clue what they are doing. When the office voicemail works, no one calls you back anyhow so what is the point. Until he replaces his office staff and brings stability to his practice, look elsewhere for a dermatologist in the Monterey, CA area. read more

I've seen both Doctors and they are caring, fully explain what care may be needed, and they are easy to talk to. The Physician's Assistant was also very nice. My first comment is that there should be a lower rating then a single star! My wife and I have been to this doctors practice for three years and always saw Dr. Chock. She was very good and the treatments and follow up with her was always very good. We make an annual appointment for a follow up review and she has been excellent. This past October we made our latest appointment (one full year in advance). We were called two days prior to the appointment and told she was no longer there (big surprise!) and that we would have to see Dr. Barnard almost three months later. We waited until the December and two days before they called and said they moved to a new location and we would have to come in in February...another two month delay. I wasn't pleased but decided to wait. We went in for the February appointment only to find a note on the door that they had moved AGAIN!!! My wife called and the girl said to go ahead and come to Carmel to their new office and he would see us. He did the appointment for my wife and then for me. He found a spot on my right leg and said he would have to do a biopsy and said it would be 1 week or less for the results. I waited two weeks and after no response I called and spoke to one of the incompetent office staff who told me "it was benign" and that two weeks for a result was standard although the licensed MD had told me one week! She said they were sending a letter to me then to confirm. I have waited three weeks and not heard a word let alone a letter. I have called the office only to get voice mail saying the "doctor" was out from 3/15 to 4/15 for a procedure. It said to leave a message as the staff and nurses were in and would call back. I have patiently waited another week and have not received the common courtesy of a return call. So, bottom line, I wouldn't go back to this doctor or this office if it meant saving my life. This is as incompetent treatment as I have ever received from a medical practice and it is no wonder that his office has shrunk to 20% of its original size and he has had to move twice in two months. All I can say is save yourself the anquish and go see a different dermatologst!!! read more

Dr.Barnard is the best! I have worked with many, many dermatologists in the area and Dr.Barnard and his team are by far my favorites. He does a great job of listening to my concerns and addressing them appropriately and is clearly very knowledgable. Unfortunately, this is the second time my appointment has been cancelled by the office 30 minutes prior to my appointment time. I saw Dr. Barnard two weeks prior after one week of not seeing any results, and my skin getting more inflamed, I called and ended up leaving a message (most times they do not answer even during regular hours you get a voice answering machine). One week after leaving the message I was called back and asked to come in and told that I would see the skin care specialist and Dr. Barnard could "pop in" for an injection. I was getting ready when they left a message (30 mins before my appt) and Brandy stated on the phone that I could come in for a consult, but the Dr. wasn't available. When I called back I was told the Dr. had a family emergency. All I asked was how much the appointment would be since I wouldn't be seeing the doctor. Brandy said it was going to be $75 plus a co-pay for getting the injection. Mind you this is after I had just gone in for the same issue and was told by the PA I could not get an injection, and had spent $100's of dollars on all the medications and products they had recommended (but didn't work). I was a little shocked and explained politely that I was surprised no one told me they were going to tack on another $75. (And I had already taken the morning off work.) After all, I was just in the office two weeks prior and had a consult and saw the PA and the recommended treatment didn't work. The receptionist Lucy gave me an exceedingly long explanation stating, "Let me finish!". Seriously? Where are your manners? She just kept going on talking to me like I wasn't understanding. I had to tell Lucy multiple times that I didn't want to see the PA, I have been a patient of Dr. Barnards for a long time, and would go to another office before seeing the PA (nothing against the PA though). She said they would call me back if they had a cancellation, I had to ask her twice if I could get an appointment with Dr. Barnard. She kept going into a longer explanation about how he is going to be on vacation "yada yada yada". Still I had to ask again, "So is it possible to make an appointment?" Finally I was able to get one two months out, which I have had to wait 3 1/2 months before, so its really not that unreasonable. Dr. Barnard is an excellent doctor but the receptionists have poor customer service. (I've worked in customer service for the first 15 years of my career, trust me I know.) Also, I recommend the office telling people at the time of the appointment about the "consult" fee. read more

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. I have been seeing Dr. Barnard for almost a decade. In 2015 is when I noticed a downfall within this practice. Prior to 15 he was phenomenal. Getting in touch with the office is nearly impossible and once you do get somebody on the line you get somebody like Angela who is an incompetent moron. She thinks she is really funny and laughed at me when I voiced my concerns. It's very sad because dr b used to be the best. The office is "no longer under contract with most insurances" such as aspire, Mcsig, and blue cross. I know it can be frustrating to find a good dermatologist but there are other great doctors in Monterey. When you have to wait six months to see someone that really says something about the way they practice medicine. Dr B has openings but good luck getting scheduled. I really hope he can rebound from this but with beauty's like Angela answering the phone after an 8min hold I doubt that will happen. read more

Forewarning: HORRIBLE staff I cant even begin to describe how incopetent their staff is. From not calling in pre-authorizations to not calling in prescriptions in a timely manner ( or not returning calls at all for that matter). My son was seen for a follow up two weeks ago (after initial tretment for acne was unsucessful after about 4 month). He was seen by a female asian doctor Chock. She wasn't very helpful during the appointment either. She prescribed a name brand medicine and said the generic vesion was harsher on the stomach. I already knew my insurance would probably deny it, they would request a pre- auth which would take for freaking ever for their staff to send ( if they even did) so I asked if I could get a prescription for the generic one as well just in case the name brand didn't go through. I explained to her the other ordeal I had gone through with her office when another name brand medication was prescribed and how long it took their office to contact my insurance to pre authorize it. She said : " I only want to give you ONE prescription! " She didn't sympathize at all or tried to help me. So because she said the generic was harsh I was going to try to get the name brand covered. They gave a discound card for the medicine. I go to the pharmacy and give it to them that same day only to be told the medical assistant gave me an expired card. I call in to their office and they tell me they had had other people calling because they also had been given expired cards ( surprise surprise!) , they assure me they will send me another one. Days later I call back because I haven't received the card and Rosanne tells me they hadn't even mailed it! So I wait... and wait... and wait some more. Several days later, when I finally receive it I find out I don't even qualify for the discount because the company offering it does not honor the discount to people who have Tricare ( that is my secondary insurance). This was the reason I asked the doctor to give me a prescription for the generic as well in the first place! But she refused. I knew this was going to happen, tried to avoid it and Dr. Chock was not willing to help. I ALSO KNEW THEIR OFFICE WAS GOING TO SCREW UP again and not follow up on things. So then I call their office again and ask if they can call the generic prescription into my pharmacy. I have called their office 10 times and spoken with Rosemary and Rosanne about 3 times each and the other calls went to their outsourced answering call center ( even though I am calling during their regular business hours). I called a few days ago ( on Thursday of last week) and Rosemary said they were waiting for their medical assistant to get a signature from the doc on the prescription. She also said it was going to get done that day and I would receive a call when it was done..... Well....Fast forward amost a week ( today is Wednesday of the next week) and wouldn't you know that I never got a call saying it was done and they NEVER even contacted the pharmacy! All I want is my son's prescription for which he has ALREADY been seen weeks ago! Is it too much to ask the Barnard employees to do THEIR job? I have called them several times today since the office opened and it just goes to the answering call center. And my son can't start his treatment without his prescription! Barnard's dermatologists staff is some of the most uncaring, incopetent people I have EVER dealt with. They want to get you in and bill you for the visits but after that YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN! This is simply ABSURD. I am going to find a new dermatologist. I honestly do not know how they stay in busioness when they have absolutelly no respect for their customers whose insurances they are more than happy to bill for their services. Update: After about ten calls today Holly answered the phone, I explained to her what has been going on and she said she would do her best to get the doc to sign the prescription. 30 min after talking to her she called me back to say she herself called it in for me after getting a signature. She said the prescription had been sitting on the medical assistant's desk for no reason and because it was such a simple request ( to switch from name brand to generic) it should've been done a long time ago. I had schedule an appointment with a young women verified the appointment for 10:30 in the morning . We chatted for 5 minutes and 10:30 was mentioned at least five times as I was writing on my wall calender for planning purposes. Day comes , I arrive 20 minutes early to update insurance information and casually asked why they had only received 2.5 stars, no answer. Well it wasn't to long before getting my answer. The young lady, who had a very recognizable accent, had given me and confirmed the wrong time for my appointment. Day was already planned around the 10:30 appointment. I canceled, and will not be going back. If they are not competent enough to get the time right then what else are they going to do wrong. Ill be looking for another more competent practice. Staff is ridiculously unhelpful and after sitting in the waiting room for AN HOUR for a 9am apt I really got to see how clueless they are. Seriously how backed up can you be at 9am???? Screwed up scheduling my guess. I will not be coming back. They clearly don't care about their patients. This is my second visit. The first one was the same and I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Dr Barnard removed a cyst from my back which was the size of a small egg. Surgery was painless but best was there was absolutely no pain after surgery which amazed me due to the size of the required incision. Took about 30 minutes of Dr Barnard working on my back to remove. I would strongly recommend Dr Barnard based on this experience plus prior visits. Very caring. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Barnard for many years. Although I believe he is a very qualified doctor and a nice person, his practice is so poorly run that I will be looking for someone else. He runs consistently 1-2 hours behind schedule and no matter how many times you request the courtesy of a simple phone call to let you know, you do not receive it. Additional issues include virtually non-existent cell service in the office so that if you are trying to keep up with work during your excruciatingly long wait, it is impossible. Though they have a wireless network, it has not worked the last four times I have been at his office. The walls between patient rooms have absolutely no sound-proofing so you hear all that is said next door. All in all, I absolutely would not recommend him due to the completely disorganized office and staff who have no regard for someone's schedule. read more

I've been to several dermatologists in my lifetime, and I've also been to Dr. Barnard's office three times. My wife also sees him. We both agree that he is very thorough, professional, extremely competent, and very nice. He is quite a pleasant man, and I also like the nursing staff there. To date, he is the only dermatologist that has been very accurate at diagnosing my skin ailments even before the biopsy. Most of the derms I've seen before would say, "Well, it doesn't look like melanoma." Or, "I'm not sure, but I'm sure it's nothing." and wouldn't bother with a biopsy. Dr. Barnard makes a clear diagnosis, even though he may be wrong based on the pathology report, and does the biopsy just to be sure. I think he's excellent in this regard. He is also not judgmental or arrogant. I went to see Barnard a few times about things going on in a personally embarrassing area. Not only that, my situation was also embarrassing. To his credit, Dr. Barnard never batted an eye or said anything judgmental. Other docs may have, but he is just a consummate professional. My app't was at 11:20. A few days before, they phoned and asked me if I could come at 9:50. I arrived at 9:50. At 10:50 I was still waiting. No one explained why. With all the staff, couldn't someone have phoned and told me they were running late? I had a sick dog at home and couldn't wait. Plus, they said I was there for an upper body check, but in reality I was there because I have a few things on my face that I thought needed to be removed. Not a good experience. read more

The best! I called for an appointment last minute to to do a head to toe mole check. They offered me an appointment the next week! The mole I had suspicions about was removed and sent in for analysis. I am waiting on the results now, but they are amazing here. The office is also beautiful. I give Dr. Barnard 5 stars as he is an excellent dermatologist. I had a two mohs procedures performed by Dr. Barnard. Both worked out very well. Even one that involved taking skin from one part of my face and transferring to my nose. However the office staff is very unorganized. One only needs to read other reviews on this issue. As of this writing they are moving to a new location. I can only hope the back office operation can be improved. read more

Called today to schedule an appointment and they were booked out 4 months. Who can wait 4 months!? I asked for a referral but the receptionist said she was new to the area and didn't know anyone!? Nice reply. She indicated she was "new herself". They used to have an associate that worked there from Palo Alto and she was GREAT but unfortunately she is gone and they haven't re staffed. The one star is for the office only. The staff was rude and unhelpful, and Dr. Barnard and his nurse shouldn't be treating people. I had never been there before and he stormed in stating that it was a busy day and he only had one nurse on and wanted to know why I was there, all without even looking at me. I had a mysterious rash on my legs and without even explaining to me what he was doing, he took a biopsy which was painful and bled for days. He stormed out before I could ask any questions and when I asked Nurse Ratched if she thought the rash was contagious she snapped- How shouLd I know?!- and left the room. I found me way out to the reception desk on my own where they said my typical copayment of $25 would be $56. I couldn't wait to get out and I would never go back. I had the lab send me the results of the biopsy, which was inconclusive, so the whole experience was for nothing. My advice is that if you are in the area it's definitely a pretty office, just don't talk to anyone and DON'T make an appointment!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Not happy with service. Dr. Barnard was fine medically, but I was way overcharged for things I did not agree to or expressly authorize. I wanted a consultation for removing one mole on my back, and possibly others. At first they wanted me to do a full body exam "because that's what Dr. Barnard prefers," but I opted not to--if the mole experience went well, perhaps I'd save up for another visit, but I really didn't see the point at present when all I cared about was the mole. He apparently is not happy when patients go against his preference, and I overheard the nurse nervously telling him behind the door before he came in what I wanted and him responding a bit put-out. I asked about laser, and he didn't even allow me to make the choice, but said he was just going to cut it. I was ok with that--I can always get laser done another time--and let him do the procedure. I wanted one mole removed on my back, and a second one looked at--not necessarily removed. He removed both. Then he removed one on my neck I had no intentions of asking about--and which later bled a lot which I had to take care of while the nurses looked on in shock. It took 10 minutes to remove 3 moles, 2 of which I did not give permission for, and the one I really just wanted a consultation for. He didn't even mention "biopsy" but apparently that's what he did? No one asked me if I wanted them tested, but apparently he sent them in to a lab. At the desk, I was charged $673, which I swallowed, thinking they must be going to the lab and I know lab expenses are high, and figuring that was the complete total and I could make my escape. However, over two months later, I get a new bill for $585--I guess for the lab testing. So what did I pay $673 for? I am going to contest it. I am going to do everything I can not to pay that greedy, underhanded b****** one more cent. I should have gone to a regular doctor, or even bought a do-it-yourself kit.
