I met a friend on Friday for cocktails and dinner. Fortunately we arrived early enough to snag a parking spot close by and a table by the window to chat and enjoy each other's company. The menu is diverse and affordable. We decided on splitting a few appetizers so that we could taste a few different plates. The Amalfi Coast spring rolls were delicious. The wrapping was light and crispy and the inside was mostly a large succulent shrimp with a fennel finish. while they were served with a marinara sauce, I decided that it was a bit too heavy me and enjoyed the rolls straight up. We also tried the squash ravioli with the gorgonzola cheese and Macedonia nuts. This dish was quite tasty and the nuts gave it a nice crunch. Finally the roasted Brussel sprouts with crispy bacon were spot on. Cooked perfectly with just the right proportion of bacon bits so that they were complementary to the vegetables without being overly present. The service was great and personable. Came here with my colleagues after performing a concert. We had a whole slate of appetizers which were all decent, the nachos being a highlight. I wouldn't order the fried calamari again--reminded me of stuff I'd get in the frozen section of the grocery store. The food that followed was pretty standard pub fare but the ingredients were fresh and portions were hearty. I had a burger, and felt that the meat needed a bit more seasoning to be perfect. I went to eat dinner and participate in Trivia Night on Wednesday evening. To start off with the good, I really enjoyed Trivia Night. It's one of the best trivia nights I've been to here in New Haven, and the best thing is it's every Wednesday! There was a broad range of niche trivia topics so everyone has a chance to participate. It's definitely a fun place to be if you want to hang out with friends and work out your brain. If you get first place, you get $50 off your tab, and if you win second place, you get $25 off your tab. This definitely raises the stakes of the game! In terms of food, I would say that it is very mid. I ordered a draft cider which arrived in a timely manner, but other people in my table had to wait a very long time for their drinks to arrive. I ordered a burger with a side of onion rings. The onion rings were not the standard thick onion rings, but resembled curly fries. They were thin, flavorless, and crispy. The burger was very dry and also flavorless. I'm sure that there are probably better options on the menu. My friends did say that the curly fries and wings are good. This place has decent food but they double charged me for an expensive order. I called and complained multiple times. A manager had even accused me of lying and wanted "proof" I'd been double charged. I provided it and he finally said it's not their fault, that some third party had made the charge and that's the reason he couldn't see where I'd been charged twice. Anyhow, he said I'd be issued a refund. I waited and I waited and waited for this refund but it never came. It makes me wonder how many other customers they've done this to. On a dark and rainy Sunday evening we arrived at this restaurant only to discover all the street parking was filled so we opted to valet park. The restaurant was fairly busy early in the evening and the adjoining pub must have been filled with patrons celebrating someone's birthday because it was quite loud early on. We were met at the door and seated at a large table next to the window where throughout the evening we watched a steady stream of people carrying pizza boxes from Modern Pizza. The restaurant is very casual with dark woodwork throughout that could use a little touch up. I tendered our expiring Groupon that included an appetizer to share, 2 entrees and 2 glasses of house wine to our waiter. He suggested we start off with the pan seared scallop appetizer which would have been our first choice had I not prepared the same dish for dinner the evening prior. Instead we chose the fried calamari with spicy Sicilian sauce. We then were served a very generous, almost a loaf, of warm crusty bread along with EVO. Our appetizer was soon served and it proved to be a winner as the squid were tender, delicious and spicy. Entree prices initially seemed to high, but a fresh mesclun salad gently dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette is included. We each chose rack of lamb as our entrees which included mashed potatoes and a medley of fresh vegetables with summer squashes predominating. I was expecting a 1/2 of rack, but we received a full rack of lamb served medium rare as requested. There was a delicious crust that complement the tender lamb. Neither of us came close to finishing our entrees so lamb redux is on our agenda. Service throughout was excellent. read more

I used a Groupon here the other night (two people share an appetizer, each choose any entree, and each choose any glass of wine)- great deal! And great way to try this restaurant! I just wish I'd been more impressed, because it seemed very promising. They make an effort to use locally sourced ingredients, which is something I always appreciate, but I just wasn't blown away. We made a 6pm reservation. They offer free valet parking, a very nice option as parking is a bit difficult. We drove around the block with the intention of pursuing the valet parking if we couldn't find a spot, but luckily managed to find one on an adjacent side street. We were seated right away. The dining room is a little odd- there's not really a place for a host to greet you, but as long as they're on top of seating you right away it's okay. If not, you could feel a little awkward- you almost wonder whether or not you went in the right door. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful in making recommendations when asked. I ordered a glass of the Caymus Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir (California), which was delicious. Warm bread and olive oil were served promptly. There were a lot of amazing-sounding appetizer options which made it difficult to choose, but we ended up selecting the Pan Seared Scallops. They were served with oyster mushrooms, spicy avocado mousse, and a pomegranate reduction sauce. There were only three scallops, which did surprise me in terms of its regular price. There were a lot of competing flavors- I'd argue maybe one too many to really get a handle on what you were supposed to be tasting. The scallops themselves were nicely cooked, though. The entrees all come with a complimentary house salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette. The salad is purely mesclun greens and the dressing- nothing else. That's absolutely not a complaint- I loved the simplicity of it, as it really highlighted the flavor of the balsamic. It was sweet with a slight hint of tangy, so much taste packed in! That was my favorite food of the night. I ordered the Grilled Duck Breast (cooked medium rare), which is served over a Duck Confit Risotto, Garlic infused Spinach, and a Port Wine Reduction. You end up getting a lot of meat between the breast and the confit, but I was disappointed to find that neither one had any flavor. Any time I've had duck before, it's been tender and mouthwatering, especially duck breast. This was very difficult to cut and lacked any essence that may have made it memorable. Although the Groupon did not come with dessert, I had hoped to try the Chocolate Lava Cake, but we were in a bit of a hurry and were told that takes 20 minutes to cook (nice to know it's not a microwave dish!)- I'd actually probably go back just to try that if I'm in the area. The menu states all desserts are made on the premises, so I decided to go with the NY Style Cheesecake instead. Sadly I wasn't all that impressed with the cheesecake either. So I'm certainly not saying this isn't worth a try. It was hard to choose what I wanted to eat because there were so many options that sounded amazing, and it's possible that everything else on the menu is much better than what I happened to choose. As I said, the wine and salad were great, and I will consider going back for dessert if I'm in the area. However, with the entrée prices, I'm not sure I'll be convinced to try them for dinner again without a Groupon. read more

This is like my New Haven version of Cheers. It's a bit of an older crowd, but it's still fun. The bar has decent beer, and very inventive drinks. The food is always good quality, made fresh, and the servers are great. I have eaten on both sides, the bar and restaurant, and they are equally good. The restaurant menu changes every now and again, but it's all locally grown stuff where it can be. The State Street Sirloin, and the rack of lamb are my two favorites on the restaurant side. Always good to perfection, and the ONE TIME I had to send the lamp back because it was overcooked, there was no issue, and they were super nice about it. On the bar side, I usually get a CM's burger, though the Open Face Steak Sandwich is by far one of the best I've ever had. They have curly, sweet potato, and steak fries, and give you extra pickles at no charge. The pear salad is pretty awesome, but even the regular salad is delicious too. Their dressing is delicious, and I think it's house made. I consider much of the wait staff friends, since they remember my name, my orders, and my preferences for fries. Just had lunch here and will not go back. I do not enjoy, as a paying customer, hearing lip from a twirp employee- especially a comment which is targeted at labelling me as ignorant. The waiter/bartender/hobbit felt it appropriate to lecture me on how their operation works which he felt was for the second time. Normally I do not have to ask for a menu when I go into an establishment- here I did and was scolded when nobody came back for my order to the point where I walked over to politely ask a second employee, this one friendly and who was tending the bar, if I should place a food order with her. After waiting an extra 10-15 minutes past our time but enjoying beers at the adjacent bar, we were seated. Service was surprisingly slow. By the time we were seated, we were 1 of only 2 or 3 other tables so there was a long wait between courses. Regardless, every course was very good. There was enough of us to try almost everything on the prix fix menu & not a single complaint from anyone. The staff was friendly & checked up on us, not making us feel rushed at all when we were the last ones there. If it wasn't late with all of us having jobs in the morning then we would've moved back to the bar. The first time I got it I thought it was so good it must be a fluke, but I've gotten it several more times since and it's awesome every time. I should probably branch out at some point and try something else, but I can't. I have taken nibbles of other people's food, including their chicken parm sandwich and a burger, and both were very good. I have never walked out of a restaurant before. I'm not even really sure of what happened to be quite honest. Started off well enough, we had our 7:30PM reservation and my boyfriend was seated promptly upon arrival. I trailed behind parking the car. Side note: Parking is horrible if the lot is full, I was lucky enough to be circling around while a spot right in front of the restaurant opened up. Our glasses were filled with water and our waiter came over shortly. He informed us that it was restaurant week and that we could order from either menu. Perfect. I asked for the wine list and ordered a Chardonnay, they don't have many options if you just want a glass. Boyfriend ordered an Amstel, I believe. Waiter came back with our drinks and we placed our order from the RW menu. Nice and smooth so far. While sipping my wine I noticed that when you walk into the restaurant, there is no real place for you to wait to be seated. And some patrons aren't greeted right away as my party was since there is one person specifically greeting guests. We talk about our day, how I loved my purple button down and through all the chatting, we notice our food was taking some time to come out. We figure it's since they were starting to fill up at this point for dinner, so we just shrug it off. P.S. This restaurant is tiny. A table that was seated after us received their appetizers before we did. I raised by eyebrow and then our food came out with the next waiter. I had the Almafi Spring Rolls and he had the Lamb Slider. You get one spring roll, which is cut in half and is a little hard to chew on. The sauce served with the rolls was good, had some kick to it. He liked the slider, although he says it would've been better if it had been topped with cheese. We finish our apps and are excited for the entrees. At this point in time my wine glass is empty and as our plates are taken away I ask for another. Salads come out shortly after and we dive in. He had his with the CT made blue cheese which he thought was just okay. Not his favorite. I liked the simple balsamic that originally comes with it. We finish our salads and my wine is nowhere to be found. I sip on my water in the meantime. More time passes by and our water is refilled but no one checks in with us. No one comes to tell me that they didn't forget about my wine. No one comes to tell us that the Short Rib is taking a while to cook. I look around and people who were seated after us were on their entree. A man finished his meal before we even received our plates. Water refill comes around again and my boyfriend informs him about my missing wine. He comes back a little later and apologizes, tells us that the other side of the restaurant, the pub, is behind. That's okay, my wine is here now. More time passes and it became 8:45PM. My boyfriend asked me if I wanted to leave and oddly enough I was thinking the same thing. We put our coats on, grabbed our bags and walked out. I have never experience such slow and non-existing service. As I write this I realize that our waiter never checked in on us after our apps to see how we were doing, he simply disappeared. He would go directly to his tables and felt like he would avoid ours. I admit I was surprised to find it trying quite hard to be quite fancy when I knew I was one wall away from a place which could sit comfortably next to the definition of "neighborhood pub" in the dictionary. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good. I had the duck entree, which I can no longer find on the menu and therefore can't pretend to remember particularly well. It was good, but not great. My date had the tuna, I believe. Again, very good, but not spectacular. I tried both and I liked them, but it didn't resonate as anything particularly memorable. It was the sort of meal where you said, "Huh, I'm pretty impressed." And yet when you look at the prices of the dishes, between 20-28, you expect just a little bit more. With so much competition in the bistro-like fare, you gotta bring your A game. The service was also a tad spotty. I won't say bad, but I will say the time between when I wanted a beer and when that sweet sweet nectar of the gods touched my lips was a little long for my liking. But then, it usually is. Besides the fact that it's a Red Sox bar, I dislike this place for many reasons. The crowd here is kind of older and boring. Now, I'm about to turn 30, so I'm not saying I'm a youngin', but this place is a snoozefest, even when it's busy. The food here gives off the impression of being pretty good, but in reality it's your average bar food, ranging from above average to practically inedible (probably the worst chicken fingers I've ever eaten. I mean, seriously, you can't make good chicken fingers?!?). Occasionally I'll go here just for the hell of it, but then after a beer or two I remember why I only come here once in a blue moon.
