We've passed by The Quail & Ale a few times and have been really curious to see what it's like, so my family stopped in for dinner last night! It's a small neighborhood pub, and it was pretty packed on a Saturday night! We were very lucky to snag a table for 4 and know next time to make reservations. The vibe is a cross between Americana and goth, and it was a cool time to visit with all of the Halloween decorations. Drinks were solid, and some dishes were better than others. French onion soup was really delicious, and so were the chicken bites in an Asian sweet and sour sauce. The knotwurst special was also tasty and was almost like a milder hot dog. One of our critiques was on the ravioli dish, which was basically swimming in butter - I know it was a brown butter sage sauce, but it was swimming in the butter and could've used a little more flavor. Bacon was good in it through. Our other critique is that my dad ordered a smash burger, and what came out couldn't have been farther from a smash burger with how thick the patty was. It was okay, just didn't match the description of what he thought he was getting. Fries also weren't our favorite and were better if you tried to think of them as chips. Overall not a bad spot, I would definitely come back for drinks and apps! Service was fine, they handled the volume of customers well and they checked in often enough.

Heard about this new local spot so went to check it out! It was really quaint inside and the aesthetic was cool! Like old victorian pub vibes! The food was yummy, we got the rice crispy shrimp, elote corn dip and Nashville hot chicken. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The drinks were fabulous too! Huckleberry lemonade and a spicy margarita! 10/10 (the service was good too!)

The owner, James, was there and very personable- explained that they had their grand opening the night before and constantly checked on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The decor is "refurbished mill/factory" themed, and there's a VERY large bar running the length of the small restaurant. We went on a Thursday night. The impression we got from watching the other patrons interacting with each other and the staff was that it's a hangout spot for friends of the owner. We felt like we were crashing someone's party. The service was slow but sweet and sincere. The food was consistently over-salted so hopefully the chef was just feeling the pressure of a packed house and having an "off" night. The "home fries" were awesome! Big chunks of well cooked potatoes. Gave it a 3 so there's room for improvement. It's new- they're still getting their feet under them.

Small local place with friendly help and excellent food. Industrial meets Irish pub vibe.

The Quail & Ale in Derby Connecticut is an Irish pub out of its element. With its 100-year-old brick industrial architecture and tastefully renovated interior, reminiscent of some 1950s, back alley speakeasy - this place feels like it should be in New York City's West Village or Boston's North End. Jason and Sarah Miller are the owners, operators, bartenders, waitstaff and door greeters - and have created a jewel of an establishment with great food and top shelf, creative drinks - that I hope all the locals appreciate. After all, any bar entrance that features a wall sized painted rendering of Paul Simonon smashing his bass guitar on the stage, replicating the cover art from London Calling - is immediately labeled "cool" in my book.

So here's how it went! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on Center Street in downtown Shelton is this gem. I couldn't tell if there was a private parking lot, but I do think there may have been a small on on the side of the restaurant. We parked on the street and it wasn't a big deal. Once inside this place is very rustic, tavern-esque and I liked it. There were high ceilings and the bar is to your left once you walk in. There are seats at the bar rail and on the right side of the restaurant are lots of tables and an exposed brick wall. Then there's a 3rd side which is considered the outdoor section! There is also a bar outdoor section complete with its own bar and a lot more tables out there. Service: Emily took excellent care of us and she was awesome. It seemed as if she was running the entire restaurant by herself except for pouring drinks. She was so sweet, talkative, funny and had an awesome personality. We appreciated her. Food: So I had the chance to try 4 of their wing flavors. Let's begin. Cajun Butter = I consider this wing to be a dry rub of sorts. I mean, it's a wing, with butter on it then sprinkled with Cajun seasoning. Exactly how I like it. These were very, very good. Wasabi Ranch = Probably the best looking wing on my tray and it tasted as good as it looked. The wasabi was powerful, but not head-opening, nose-clearing powerful. Lol. The ranch was present, but not over-powering. Buffalo = Good strong smell and strong flavor. It punches you right in the mouth. Maple Buffalo = This was an odd flavor for me. Both the maple flavors and buffalo flavors are strong so in my opinion, they didn't work very well together. They overpowered each other and didn't blend very well. The wings were a little on the smaller side, but that's okay because we came on a special night, which I'll go over in the next section. Value: So on Thursdays the restaurant offer $0.75 wings with a minimum order of 6 per flavor. So the wings are a bit smaller, but it just means you can eat more and try more flavors! In conclusion, I loved this place and would really like to make my way back down here to try out some more flavors!

Pretzel, tacos, fishbowl, and cocktails were all good too. This is definitely a place if you like to party, with karaoke on Tuesday nights and brunch with djs on Sunday. When we walked in, we did catch the smell of weed as well.. but the food more than made up for the atmosphere. Friendly staff too.

That said, it does seem like the owner could benefit from hiring a few additional staff members to better keep up with customer volume. My party waited a noticeable amount of time for food and drinks, even though it wasn't particularly busy compared to times I've seen in the past. The service itself was great, and the staff worked hard despite being stretched thin. Overall, the food and drinks were excellent, and with a little more staffing, the experience would be even better.

I just adjusted the chairs to make sure my guest and kids were comfortable and not annoying the adult customers in bar area etc. She yells "MAY I HELP YOU WITH **MY** FURNITURE". Im not interested in your 1975 chairs but I am INDEED moving a chair so my nephew can sit down. Im thinking Im being HELPFUL so I don't have to bug anyone but instead, she tried to sh*t on me in front of other patrons. After that, our vibe was not vibing and we did not order drinks as we had planned and left. I was really hoping this tanking restaurant would have been a winner as we have a LARGE circle of friends in the town & I we all love giving business to mom and pops hanging by a thread. Too bad.

We had tickets at eight for Haunting at the Ridge about three minutes away. After looking at the menu, we decided to come here for dinner. I was very excited because of all the great menu options. The service was terrible from the start all around. We arrived at 6:15. There was two people in front of us. The hostess acknowledged us, but never took our name. A few minutes later, other people started coming in and she started taking their names and asking them if they wanted to sit outside. She never gave us that option. One of the people came in and started to debate whether or not they wanted to wait 20 minutes. She told them "You can stay or go, it doesn't matter to me." I should have known right there to leave. We were seated at 6:30 which was not a bad wait. 6:45 our orders were taken. Our waitress did not come back to the table one time after bringing our drinks. Never checked on us, never let us know what was going on with the food. She came back at 7:28 with our appetizer. We asked her how long would it take for the rest of our food. She apologized and said it would be another 20 to 25 minutes. I didn't understand how burgers take over an hour to make. We canceled the rest of the order. I was excited about the hotdog. Another letdown. It was cold when I got it and the chili on top had no flavor. I'm not even sure if it was deep-fried. Definitely not worth the $14.50 price. I will say the fries were very good. They were the only bright spot of the night. They have a lot to offer, but I would never come back here due to my experience.
