After a year long battle in court with my previous attorney, I finally realized the mistake I made with my decision on an attorney that was recommended by a friend. He has even sat in as a temporary Judge! He truly is passionate about it. There were more than a few times he had to remind our Judges of current laws and did not miss little things that may have slipped by. He is a Family Law fountain of knowledge! He is in and out of Family Law courts everyday and this also gives him the advantage of knowing the traits and earned respect of the Family Law Judge's. In the Family Law courts, that is a priceless advantage that can't be duplicated. Chris never sugar coated anything for me. I never got a sales pitch of what I wanted to hear. He always gave me an honest outcome and how we would work toward getting what I wanted accomplished. My old attorney left a huge knot that Chris had to untangle. After my first day in court with Chris, the knot started loosening up instantly. He did his homework on my case, was prepared, and took control. I walked out of court that day finally seeing some light at the end of a completely dark tunnel and more time with my child. After another year and a half of fighting (opposing counsel had to keep getting extension after extension because he was so lost), I got my rights of being a Father. I hired Mr Abernathy after battling my ex husband for 5 years in court. I had filed an ex parte pro per in December 2019. I immediately went to his office and met with him. He assured me, after telling me all the wrong things I did in my filing, that he could get the visitation I wanted with my son. When we next appeared in court January 2020, the judge modified our custody but we were set to reappear in April to follow up. Then the pandemic hit. My ex husband showed his true colors again and with held our son from many more then 17 times until we were able finally to be heard again in court in June. With the hopes to settle the stoked fires, the judge sent us to mediation again. All the while, Mr Abernathy kept reminding me to be patient. "Let's give him more rope to hang himself". We sat before the judge again in December 2020 and Mr Abernathy eloquently went through the prior year of all the violations of the court order that my ex did. And the judge agreed, awarding me majority physical custody. We won! I have been in court for seven years now. It's exhausting and beyond stressful.
