We saw a show at the venue last night. Having to stand outside until 6:30 is understandable but still not very inviting. A glass of wine was $10 or 15. And get ready to guzzle it because even though it comes in a plastic sippy cup you couldn't take it in. The venue was probably nice when it opened but it is just ok and on threshold of not being very nice. All said the staff was friendly and the show was great. Growing up in Virginia Beach this is where my family always came to see Broadway shows. I have experienced many shows in different seating areas and always enjoyed myself. I recently came with my husband to see A Magical Cirque Christmas which was a good show. I have seen many Cirque shows all over the world and have not been disappointed. We used the parking garage which is basically right below the Hall. It was $5 to park and the attendant was a very nice lady. Make sure you place your ticket on your dashboard. Driving down there are parking attendants directing you which row to park in. I was unaware that in order to take the elevator you need to be wanded first. There was no sign or anything indicating this. We walked in the lobby of the elevator and noticed a table set up on the other side with 2 lines of people waiting. We walked through and got in line with everyone else. The elevator takes you directly inside to the lobby of the Hall. The show was supposed to start at 7:30 so I figured we would be able to sit down at 7:00 so that we would be familiar with our seating area. Well that was not the case, doors didn't open until 7:20 and inside the lobby was getting super crowded. Finally we could sit down and of course the theater is a bit old so the seats are old. I just felt like I could not escape the smell of cigarettes. I don't know if the smell was trapped in the seat or it was the people in close proximity to me but it was bad and it was throughout the entire show. The show started late which may not seem like an inconvenience to some but I felt that it was. I just feel with the amount of ticket sales and paid parking the theater can afford to do an upgrade and make the seats nicer and a bit wider to give people a little more room to move around. read more

My first experience at Chrysler Hall was back in 2012 when I saw Wicked. I had a pleasurable experience then. When the sale for Broadway in Norfolk for the 2018-2019 season became available for a lower purchased tickets. I have since been able to enjoy Rent, The Wizard of Oz, and Finding Neverland. I purchased a parking pass in addition to the tickets. The staff that I spoke with over the phone were extremely pleasant and helpful. The box office staff was as well. I had items waiting for me at the box office and was confused, they were pleasant when I inquired after my item. The ushers are pleasant and helpful. I have enjoyed my theatre experience each show and find the venue enjoyable. The staff is also pleasant and friendly. I am glad to be a season member. I look forward to enjoying many shows in the future. read more

The hall and shows are an asset to the area. A nice new dress and a makeover to spruce the old gal back up to date would go a long way. She has fallen behind and needs some love. On the plus, the restrooms appear updated - they're clean and nice. A few more stalls for the Ladies would do wonders at Intermission. The theater itself, albeit clean, feels old, worn, and dusty. Seating is really tight and uncomfortable. The pricing is high. The venue should match. It had been some time since we went to a show, and I was most disappointed to see so many jeans and sweatshirts. This was an evening show for Wizard of Oz. What happened to dressing for a show? A touch of class? It made me miss how the hall once felt. It needs some much-deserved elevation. Overall, a big plus for the area to keep the good shows coming! read more

Went here for Tamar Braxton concert! Yay Tamartian fan!! Anyways....I haven't been here since that middle school field trip...you know those plays we didn't care to go to but to get out of class we went anyways...well it still looks like that place!!! Not to tell my age, bc we never tell but I mean it's the same red seat, fake wood paneling, and yuck lighting. This place needs major remodeling! Sound system sounds good and all the staff around the venue were friendly and engaging but feeling like I'm in a school auditorium watching concerts isn't cool as a grown up. read more

My wife and I recently attended a performance of Wicked at Chrysler Hall and it was our first time seeing a show at this venue. I was excited to check it out since we love seeing shows and the good news is that the show did not let us down. It was fantastic. The venue, on the other hand, was merely A-OK. This review will be based on our perceptions of the facility itself. As we walked up 40 minutes prior to the show, there were two fairly long lines waiting to get into the Hall. They scan your tickets as you enter the building but it moved fairly quickly so it wasn't a bad wait really. Once in, the lobby area is rather cramped. Between the lines to get merchandise, concessions, and those waiting to get to their seats, it was a little convoluted. After my wife bought a T-shirt, we figured out we needed to get into the next line to find our seats. We were seated in the orchestra section and I am fairly certain we could have figured out how to find our seats. There were at least ten different doors that could be accessed to enter the seating area but we waited to be told where to go. Again, it wasn't a bad wait but did seem unnecessary. Once inside, the good news is that there is actually a lot of leg room between each row compared to some other venues we have experienced. As others have said, it is not a huge theater so there didn't appear to be many bad seats in the place. However, as another reviewer said, the seating wasn't as sloped as one might like making it tough to see over the people ahead of you, particularly for kids. One cool feature at intermission was that you could place your concessions order before the show to be ready at intermission. They just set it out for you to come pick up. I hadn't seen that before, so a nice little service available for you. The not so good is that the theater could use a makeover as the wood paneling on the walls looked dated. This isn't a big deal but the interior could be more aesthetically pleasing with a slight update. We love Broadway shows and are glad high quality productions are available in Hampton Roads. We will definitely be back for more shows but just be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get there and wait in lines!! read more

I went to the Chrysler Hall for the Gladys Knight show with my Mother and Sister. Great show and the acoustics were wonderful. She sounded like we were up close and personal. We were not - Smiles! Gladys was amazingly agile and her voice is crystal clear. A must see! This venue is clean and well maintained. The sound quality is amazing. The staff is very gracious and helpful. The bathrooms are spotless and updated. As a woman I love clean and tidy restrooms. Back to the venue. We arrived early because we were warned about minimal parking near the building - True! We arrived about an hour early and barely made it into the lot. You must arrive early or park across the street in open parking - it is free and only a few steps away but underground parking is SWEET! Okay. We received great parking and we were flying high until we reached the concert hall where we discovered we could not go in until 15 minutes before the concert. So we were all just standing around leaning against walls and praying for an open door. There was no show before this one Why Did We Have To Wait on our feet after paying $80 for a seat. The seats were my main issue. They are small and tight. You need to know the person beside you because you will be touching each other and you will share the smell of whatever they just ate. Other than that. Loved it. I am looking into other concerts at Chrysler Hall because the venue is very nice. You should go and enjoy your favorite show you will not be disappointed. read more

This is my first time to be here. I watched the broadway musical show "THE BOOK OF MORMON". I absolutely enjoyed every moment of it, funniest show I have ever seen. Furthermore, I'm actually surprised how tremendously huge the entire hall. However, I believe it needed refurbishment. I like the design of the entire building but the layout is outdated. If you ever wanted to watched a show I suggest to get a ticket that much closer to the main stage so you can enjoy and appreciate the show. I know its a bit costly but trust me its worth it. As for customer service, I hate to say people here should be trained and act as professional. I went there an hour before the show and it was quite cold and windy. Apparently, the guy who was in the gate informed us that were not allowed to enter because they were not yet ready to open. I wasn't the only one who was there and there were a few guests queuing to get in. Seriously, sometimes exception doesn't hurt instead it create a memorable experience. Overall, the show itself was ridiculously fantastic and impeccably executed. read more

Good venue with affordable concessions like $5 for popcorn and $5 for a pretzel. Shirts are expensive as expected for the show we seen last night (Hamilton); $40 per t-shirt. Parking is very affordable at $5 under the garage so all in all you can have a good date night. read more

Came this weekend for the first time for my boyfriends graduation. It was a very rainy day so the parking garage was cool. I liked the fact that I could walk directly into the facility without being drenched in rain as it was pouring down really bad when I arrived. Plan to pay the $5 to park here but trust me it comes with the convenience. Prepare for a small wait on major events just like with any event. The place was clean and nice set up for the graduation. It was terribly cold outside, and I guess they were trying to save money because it was still sufficiently cold indoors as well. We parked at a $5.00 cash only garage nearby, so traffic is to be expected entering and exiting the garage. The Zelda Symphony was amazing, and it was an early birthday present! 100% worth the money to sit in the center of the orchestra. Thank goodness no one was annoyingly tall or wore a hat too tall to block my view. It was perfect! The orchestra played nostalgic tunes as the gameplay would run through on the projector. Wind Waker was an amazing experience as it was my favorite game with the entire album on my "stu-DYING" playlist during my time in undergrad. The conductor also pulled out the windwaker baton to lead the orchestra, and it got sooo hype! Older games were brought forth on the screen, and it was just extremely nostalgic. It's awesome how the orchestra evolves with the game, adding in new music for a new game (Breath of the Wild). There was even an encore. The dress code was sporadic- cosplayers, dressy, and casual. Awesome time to bond with friends, take your nerdy date to, or just enjoy with your family. I will be back... hopefully they feature a Kingdom Hearts theme one day... read more

This was our first trip to Chrysler Hall. We saw the Harry Potter concert series in Dress section A, seats 12 and 13, which had a wonderful view of the stage. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra did an amazing job brining the movie to life and I especially loved that the audience was encouraged to participate throughout (three cheers to Gryffindor). We parked in the parking garage under the venue for $5 and, after a bag check and wanding, we took an elevator inside. There were a few places to buy snacks (popcorn, soft pretzels (only mustard dip),candy) and they served alcoholic beverages. For this particular showing we were allowed to take them to our seats. We had arrived a little early and had to wait to go into our seats. The woman who was ushering our section had an unpleasant attitude and was very short with us and the other people we saw her interact with. There were only 4 stales in the woman's restroom on our floor and the doorway was very narrow. In general, this venue could use an update. There were not any programs, which was really disappointing, especially when you're paying so much for tickets. Since we went to this event for my birthday we decided to pay $20 for a commemorative program, but I still feel some paper form should be provided at the least. read more

As many amazing performances as I've seen there and as much fun as I had performing there as a dancer when I was younger, Chrysler Hall has always left me a little cold as a venue. It plays host well enough to symphonies and ballets and and myriad other performers. They used to always call it the "acoustically perfect" Chrysler Hall, which I've always had series doubts about. Mostly I just think it's drab looking inside and out. It doesn't have much character. Not that it's going to stop me from going to see shows there. read more

My only gripe was that this place is dated. Could use some fixing up. The seats on the first level are very close. So, that's no fun if the person next to you smells like Fritos. All in all, I would come here again. I heard the top level seats are a little bit more spaced out, but I guess I'll find out next time. read more

The staff are pretty friendly here. My only qualm is that it's freezing in here. Also, the bathrooms are always terribly congested during intermission especially upstairs. There are only 3-4 stalls on the upper level. I do like that there's at least two parking garages (below and across the street) to choose from when attending an event here. Went to see Bert Kreischer there. Fortunately I was able to sit front row. However, this was the worst experience I have had at a concert or venue. It was packed and the front row was folding chairs and too packed. I literally had to sit sideways because the guy beside me should have purchased 2 seats because of his size. In addition, the beer lines were way to packed as there was not enough space to walk and had to cut in between people to move around. I will not go back to this venue for a concert or performance again. It is always about the money! read more

This place is perfect for comedians. I've never had a problem. I've seen Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, and Daniel Tosh here. I was always able to see and hear everything clearly every time. I've been in the orchestra front row , dress A, E, and F. I feel dress A-E is the optimal seat, still being able to clearly see the facial expressions of the comedian. Pro tip: park at MacCarthur Center first floor north deck. It's ~$3, or free if you stay late enough! read more

Your alarm clock goes off, it's 6:35AM. Time to get up, get showered, get dressed, get coffee, get to work. And as the years go by, as the routine slips from routine to drudgery and back again, your hopes for The Day go from Nervous Anticipation of youth to I Just Hope To Survive Intact to Face Another Day. And you do. And the cycle continues. Lather, rinse, repeat. And by and large it is a good existence. Indeed, some days suck much less, some about average. The entire palate of grey is in full bloom here, the comfort of the Middle of the Road a not unwelcome distraction to the Internal Biological Processes that in the composite are Human Life. Every now and then, though.... Stewart Copeland was bored, or inspired or lost a bet or something. Whatever the motivation, the end game of all of this was that he spent 3 and a half years writing an orchestral accompaniment to the Silent Film Classic Ben Hur. For reasons that quite honestly escape me and probably make no sense at all, the world debut performance was held at Chrysler Hall, our venerable Old Lady in Downtown Norfolk, sharing the same plot of land where John Brophy used to ply his trade and throw garbage cans at opposing backup goalies. Indeed, why here, Stewart? Please don't get me wrong, all of us in attendance for the performance sensed that this was Something Big, that we were somehow going to be the Sow's Ear that Became the Silk Purse. We became the Anointed, the First. And for that, I know that I will be eternally grateful. Allow me to attempt to put this into a bit of a perspective for a moment. Mr. Copeland (yes, that one. He used to sit in the back during Police Concerts and was very much the Sountrack of my Misspent Youth. Me and Mrs. Jones? Not hardly. Miss Gradenko was more my speed. But I digress) edited the original film down to 90 minutes WITHOUT sacrificing story line. He could have stopped there and walked away with a Big Win, but no. He decided that this needed a whole new orchestral accompaniment. In the Old Days before Sound, Color, Twitter, and Mariam's Fil-Am Cuisine, movies had no sound. Instead, a giant (and mighty) Wurlitzer organ raised from the floor and a guy pumped away at it during the film. Sometimes there was a scored accompaniment, sometimes he would just wing it. He faced the screen so that he could understand the timing and make sure that his music at least vaguely fit what was happening on the screen. Other films had wax cylinders that made the circuit with the film, but again, timing was critical. One second of timing drift could put the film into an entirely new and unfortunate light. The timing. It's everything. When Mr. Copeland composed his score, he must have edited for hours getting the timing just right. Making sure that when the film showed herald trumpets signaling the beginning of the Chariot Race, he scored the trumpets to life at just that moment, that the drum beats signaling the rowing cadence of the Slave Driven Roman ship were in perfect sequence with Stewart's own flailing on the floor tom. And then, in the most trusting and courageous act of all time, he turned that score over to Maestro RIchard Kaufman. He stepped off a cliff (and conveniently took a seat behind the drum kit), not knowing how the journey would progress, much less the landing at the end of the journey. It was perfect. Every note, every nuance, every flourish. Perfect. This score breathed new life into a classic that still had plenty of life left on its own. Indeed, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, to be amongst the first to witness that true mastery of sound. This was special. This was that day when the alarm clock went off as before, but what lie ahead was anything but middle of the road or just getting by. And we were there. Norfolk. Southeast Virginia. 757. We have a bit of a reputation. We don't excite easily. Go ahead, try to impress us. Just as on the Atlantic and Chesapeake, our waves tend to be very small, very non-intrusive. A gentle lapping on the shore. We tend to be passive, to let the experience wash over us. But not this night. No, this was different. As the final notes were still reverberating and the screen showed the famed Lion silently roaring his final time of the night, we rose as one and cheered. And didn't want to stop, calling Mr. Copeland back to the stage to bask in the glory that was truly his that night. We cheered because it was perfect. We cheered because we were allowed to be a part of it. It will soon be Monday, the start of another work week. At 6:35AM, my alarm clock will once again go off. But for the next while, I will anxiously await the dawning of the day, I will embrace the challenges and the Left and Right of the road, because that is where the life is, that is where the magic happens. So, after the Al Pacino show, I'm slowly walking down the marble stairs. They feel slippery, (and mind you I'm not even wearing heals) so I am holding on to the rail, being careful, but nevertheless I go SPLAT at the bottom of the stairs! I fell.... And I don't know what is more surprising, the face that I didn't get hurt or the fact that the usher standing 5 feet away from me, looked at me and then looked away! He didn't ask me if I was ok or try to help me up or anything! My friends, Aleena and Kimberly, helped me up and we left. But I just felt that was so rude of the usher that I called Chrysler Hall and filed a complaint. This place isn't all bad, but after posting about this on Facebook, I find out that many other people have fallen here too. I think they need to do something about those marble stairs. Also their customer service has never been great here. read more

I love Chrysler hall. I feel like it's one of those venues that pretty much regardless of your seat, you have a good seat. Most recently we've seen the Tenderloins (TruTV's Impractical Jokers), but we've also seen Ira Glass and shows like Book of Mormon and Wicked. From comedians to musicals, I have to say, it's a great overall experience. One thing to note is that there is no indoor meeting or waiting area. This usually isn't a problem because the fountains outside are really great to hang out at (selfies!), but when it's super cold out and you're waiting for someone...well, maybe just make sure everyone has their individual tickets ahead of time! read more

I went to the Chysler Hall this weekend for the Richmond Ballet's "Nutcracker" and it was amazing! my boyfriend took me as a belated birthday present and it was my first time at the chrysler hall. the seats were comfortable, we had awesome seats and we could see everything! the show itself was wonderful! had a great experience! the only reason why this isn't getting 5 stars is because the concessions! man are those drinks pricey! a bottle of water was $4! i mean, i guess this is pretty standard for anywhere you go, but i just thought it was a little steep. the sodas were a little cheaper but came in small cups and filled mainly with ice. if you can, sneak in your own drinks! haha jk... kind of... read more

I went to see Hamilton with my family this weekend at Chrysler Hall. While the venue is clean and well attended, there is a severe lack of restrooms. After the 15 minute intermission, people were still parading into the theatre after finally making it though the horrendous bathroom lines. Something should be done to improve flow - or more time added to intermission. read more

To preface, the rating here is comparing this venue to all other similar venues that I've been to. There is nothing inherently wrong with this place, but it's smaller than most performance venues and although it has that old theater type ambience, it does not come close to compare to what you would find in New York, SF, Richmond or LA. I do have to say though that I do enjoy coming here for their musicals. They have a wonderful schedule of events throughout the year. The most recent being Wicked which I've seen like 3 times now (really, a rookie when it comes to the REAL Wicked fans). Their parking fills up quickly and you do have to pay $5 for all night parking. Most people either park at MacArthur and walk over or park across the street to avoid the post musical rush to escape! read more

I don't know where to begin! My Elderly parents bought tickets months in advance to make sure they had the right seats , given she is basically wheelchair bound. They purchased my tickets along with theirs ahead of time time , so basically I had not had a chance to see where we were sitting! Today was a 96 degree day and they traveled from Suffolk to Norfolk to see this show. I live in va beach and met them at the front steps. Apparently the tickets my Dad bought were not wheelchair accessible. He's getting older and is not so tech savvy but is yet stubborn and thinks he's good and does not need help! Honestly, we found out they were balcony tickets which my mom can't climb stairs! Charles Housy was amazing! He saw the distress m in my parent's faces and saw how tired they were! He got them water , fruit and cheese and got them situated in the handicap section! My friend and I sat in the other two seats . This situation could have gone downhill but Charles prevented an elderly crisis and possibly a hospitalization ! The reason I know this is because I'm an ICU nurse for Sentara for 33 years and have had some situations like this make my folks all turned around and defeated and Exhausted! I appreciate Charles!! Thank you so much!! You have no idea how you made this day better! They do not get out much! I hope I can return the favor to you one day!! Thanks for caring and being human read more

Went here for a concert, and I was a bit disappointed. This was my first time here, and the photos on the venues website are obviously from when it first opened because it doesn't look like that now! First off the seats are so small and tightly together that I had to be careful not to touch my neighbors legs or smack them accidently when raising my hands in the concert. My husband is 6 foot 3 inches, and he had a tough time being comfy in those chairs. They were old, the walls were run down, just overall this place needs some updating and renovations. The sound also seemed a tad too loud over the singers voice. read more

Going to my daughter's dance competition Chrysler Hall is always a pleasure to attend. The staff appears helpful with attention to any queries you may have about seat locations. The security set up is always on point with posts at each entry and exit. I haven't experienced a bad outing yet at Chrysler Hall. read more

We have been frequenting Chrysler Hall events for a couple of years now and I have to say I am mostly pleased with the talent they attract on a regular basis. Just in the last couple of years we have seen Anthony Bourdain, Ron White, and Blue Man Group. Last night's "Al Pacino: One Night Only" event was almost like being in the middle of an episode of Inside the Actor's Studio, albeit without the old guy that Will Farrell imitates so brilliantly. The venue itself is fairly "Meh", though. The seating is packed too close and there were some noticeable sound problems last night. Also, I don't even bother with the pre-show drinking options since they are ridiculously overpriced and usually of low quality. I prefer to get my food and beverage on before showing up to the event in question. Staff are not always the friendliest but I haven't experienced anything like Vanessa G.'s encounter last night. If I had then I certainly wouldn't be this positive on the place. Overall, there is certainly room for improvement on the service side but I do appreciate that because of the Chrysler, Norfolk can attract some top acts from the entertainment circuit. read more

Chrysler Hall has been a Norfolk landmark since the 70s. It's my least favorite of the Seven Venues, but mainly that's because this theater can't compete with the character of old buildings like Well's Theater or Attucks Theatre. Still, it's a venue that brings Broadway to Norfolk, as well as the Virginia Symphony and Virginia Ballet. I even saw Morrissey play there. The only real problem with the theater is it's not sloped very much. It's hard to see over the people seated in front of you. If you're going to a show here, try and get as close as possible to the stage, or you'll be dodging big hairdos and hats all night. read more

I thought this would be a nice night out with my significant other one considering the price we paid and two because we rarely have time to do this . This was my first time here and we went to see the Shen Yun performance(should be advertised as overly religious but the dancing was beautiful) The individuals to our right were chewing loudly on popcorn the entire time; I didn't think food or drinks were allowed in the auditorium during a performance and on the other side of us this gentleman was on his phone the entire performance. I thought ushers would have taken care of these individuals but we had to try and enjoy the performance considering the interruptions. Also during intermission a whole group of very loud people took the empty seats behind us and talked the rest of the time. The experience all in all was like a 10 dollar movie theater. I will not be returning after the amount we paid for seats and I would not recommend wasting money on this venue. Definitely a different date night spot would be preferable. read more

We have season passes yearly and enjoy the plays at Chrysler Hall. My husband and I are both having hearing issues which is not been improved with the headsets. We would really enjoy closed caption across the top of the stage like at the Sadler Center. The songs are especially hard to understand with different accents. This would really make us enjoy each performance better. Sometimes, I have missed 30% of the words. There is closed caption on the side but this can not viewed in the balcony. read more

I've been to Chrysler Hall for several different events from concerts to broadway musicals to ballet to orchestra performances. I am never disappointed in their offerings, but I wish that the City of Norfolk and Seven Venues would work a little harder to get MORE shows. The facility is small but large enough to put on a production of the Lion King, so why not solicit more shows?!? I think part of the reason is that patrons of the arts aren't as influential here in Norfolk/Va. Beach and there are probably larger areas that sell out shows more than the Chrysler. It's a shame. We went to see American Idiot on their opening night and the place wasn't even close to being a full capacity. I know there are some bigger acts that have come (Lion King, Wicked) and I know Les Miserables is coming but I just feel they could do better. read more

I have so many fantastic memories of Chrysler Hall. I've seen countless musicals there: Beauty & The Best, Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Wicked, Jekyll & Hyde and more. My mom has been taking me to Chrysler Hall ever since I was a little girl and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I like this venue because it isn't too huge, so while some seats are better than others, there isn't a terrible seat anywhere in the house. There is also a balcony option for seating. There are a lot of good plays and musicals that come to Chrysler Hall so definitely try to catch one if you haven't already. read more

We saw Rent last night and the performance was phenomenal. I was disappointed that the doors were opened and closed b the ushers several times during the performance and one time held open a bit. Also there was a complete lack of etiquette as patrons used their phones several times throughout the performance. The venue was great acoustic quality and was clean but it was so warm people were somewhat uncomfortable. It was a stellar performance of the production and if you have not seen it you definitely should! read more
