The Granby Thestre in and of itself is a good venue. It provides multi level areas where seats can be reserved for guests that want to have a place to chat, have sons drinks and at the same time great views to the main floor/stage. Could it be great? Sure - need some updating of flooring, lighting, etc. I was here last night for the Dayshift event sponsored by Fever. It's meant to be a dance 80's/90's themed dance party. This event itself is a 4. You pay $30 (not sure if worth it compared to just go to dance clubs by the oceanfront where there's no cover charge). They give you a light up foam thing which didn't last the whole hour I was there. There were confetti sprayed every now and then, music wasn't bad. The twerking contest am not sure if I'd rate a 1 or 2. Overall I guess it's an alternative to go to if you don't have plans to watch the Admirals! read more

Beautiful old theater right in the heart of Granby! I can't believe in almost 20 years of living here I've never been.... Last week for date night we attended a Candlelight Concert of the Nutcracker and old Christmas carols. It was beautifully decorated and all aglow with thousands of candles. I liked the side bar area - the old-world feel (think opera house 1890s) and the various opportunity for set-up and party hosting as well as the stage for the performers. Parking is super easy nearby in one of the numerous downtown garages. No complaints from me! Charming. read more

Ive been to the Granby Theatre 2x now. Once for a candlelight concert which I loved and more recently for a murder mystery dinner. Given that this is an event space, each production might be a little different in terms of food, organization etc. Basing this off the venue alone, the theatre is beautiful. Seats could be more comfortable especially in the balcony, but I do like how open the venue is. Parking can be a little tricky depending on time of day but there are garages nearby. Will definitely be back for another event! read more

I'm torn with this one. I'm basing my review off the venue as a whole and trying not to cloud my reason and experience for why I was at the Granby Theater. When I was there it was just blah. Tacky in a way. My seating was so uncomfortable. I've seen photos of the theater from last events both large and small and this just did not hit the mark anywhere. I'll go back one more time, but for such a classic location I expect more. It was clean, but not impressively clean. Are my expectations to high? The food at the event was not horrible at all. It fit the hill and worth the money paid. Not sure if that was them or someone else. Other seating areas looked cramped and hard to pass through. We are all adults at this event. Went to the adults only escape room dinner challenge. Tickets were purchased via eventbrite, included participation in the challenge, 3 drink tickets, and a dinner buffet. The decor inside the theater was actually nice. I liked the elegant yet dark and mysterious vibe it gave. We were paired randomly in a group of other people to do the challenges with. Regarding food and drinks, you technically only receive two drinks with your ticket purchase rather than the mentioned three since one drink was a challenge itself, a Bloody Mary, (0/10) none of us in the group drank it because it wasn't good. You did have the option to purchase more drinks throughout the night at the bar though. I had a wine and a vodka cranberry (7/10). The buffet was just ok, food lacked seasoning and wasn't very warm. I put a little of everything on my plate to try but could only take a few bites before they announced that the challenges would begin soon. Overall 4/10 on the food. There was also fruit and cheeses as well as cheesecake towards the end of the night. I suggest eating beforehand or to arrive at the event early if u want more time to eat. I did really enjoy the challenges and meeting new people in my team. My team was the only group to complete all of the activities correctly so we won the event, our prizes were that we each could choose a bottle of wine to take home. We chose the rosé and the merlot. I went to the Candlelight concert at Granby Theater. It was a beautiful venue and I enjoyed everything! The staff were very nice and helpful. They answered all my questions. I enjoyed a drink at the bar, they were efficient. The seating was easy due to staff being very attentive and hospitable. The Vivaldi quartet concert was amazing! This is a great venue! I have been here a few times. It's located in the heart of the nightlife of Granby Street. I been here for a musical, dance event and this time was for a comedy show. Main comedian was Mark Viera. I went with a friend and had side tables with cocktail service and it was pretty full and a good crowd of people. We ordered a bottle of wine to our table and the bartender was super friendly. The show was great and funny, funny guy! The bathrooms are up a set of stairs in the theater. Something I fun to discover. When walking in you have mirrors all over. YAY!! fun!! I sometimes have an attendant, but I didn't see one this night. The place is pretty big.. I love this venue! I have visited many times, but as of late, the word on the street is that this place is closing soon or it may in fact be closed at this time. Nevertheless, the last time I visited was this past Summer. One of the local radio stations were having a party celebrating something and I was fortunate to have won tickets to the event. My babe and I arrived about 10 pm on a Sunday night and the place was already entertaining a great crowd. The drinks were flowing... the bartenders were looking sexy... everyone present seemed to be having a great time! I did venture to the restroom that was up some stairs in the theater... this was sexy! I love the concept! There was also room for an attendant, but I guess she hadn't arrived yet. Mirrors everywhere... a girls dream restroom!! The venue is huge!! There are at least three separate bars and plenty of seating... sometimes it's free other times you have to pay for a section. Nevertheless, if you get a chance to visit, check this place out. It's located in the heart of the nightlife of Granby Street. Went for the Harry Potter event last night and it was terrible compared to how it was last year. The food was dry, the initial movie being played was from Hulu and had the USA logo on the bottom, and for a buffet the salad, bread, and fruit that most went towards because of the dry chicken and mashed potatoes was gone. As for dessert, if you were lucky enough to get a slice of the first pie they had good.. but that was it after that. The rest was a plate of cookies. As for the ambiance, again last years was far superior and the service by the actors this year was a clear sign of it. Disappointed is an understatement. read more

Had a fabulous time at the Lord of the Rings event! The food was great and they did a fantastic job with the theme. Loved the ambiance and everyone's costumes. I do have 2 recommendations for improvement though. While the music acoustics sounded great I couldn't make out what any of the characters were saying in the film. I hope they fix that in the future. The chairs were uncomfortable for having to sit in them 4 hours but that may have been because they were trying ensure they fit the theme. read more

Granby Theater is a lot nicer looking than when I first moved here ten years ago. They have done some restorations. My husband and I attended a murder mystery dinner. We had a lot of fun. Charge what you want for alcohol but I got two small sodas (like a small plastic cup size) and it was $10 (no refills). If you wanted water, they had even smaller cups and you had to go get it from the bar. I would honestly would have paid more for the event and have non-alcoholic drinks built it instead of being price gouged on drinks. The appetizers were good for the event. The main course was okay. It was kind of small. I think I would have been happier just eating appetizers. The event was fun and the staff was nice. Just left a bad taste in my mouth for the venue charging that much for a soda from a soda gun. read more

Went an event last week... Overall this experience was positive... The building is very historic and has classic charm. The interior has recently been renewed to allow events, but more is needed to bring back the authentic interior. The layout with tiered seating has great potential, but is currently not configured for optimum seating. The bar and wait staff need some training in customer service and need to be more friendly. The food was good, but it was brought in from another connected establishment. It was really odd I had to pay for my food and closeout my food ticket including a tip without receiving my food first.. Never had that type of service before... I love what the new ownership has done to reopen this iconic location. More is need to bring it up a notch or two.. This could be a premium location for local for regional up and coming and headliner singers and bands to hold plugged or unplugged music events. read more

I've been here just a few times, but from this experience I can recommend it for a night out. If you want to host your event here do your research of course. Granby Theater is pretty cool. And it is HUGE! There is wide open spacing when you enter (tables). A long well stocked bar to your right. More open dance space at the very front. They can do cool lighting and smoke of course. I was here for a big event and we had the VIP section reserved for us. The VIP section is stadium seating so you've got a clear view of the entire club (a few stairs to climb). Each VIP section has a table surrounded by booth seating. Be sure to check the calendar of events! Don't think you and half a dozen friends are going for a chill night and paying the regular cover charge only to wait in a crazy long line, find out there is a special guest DJ and it now costs $20 or more. I know it seems lame to research a night out to party, but it is more lame not to have enough cash. It seems as though the theater has a different themed event here several days a week (I'm on the mailing list). You can also reserve the theater or the VIP section for private events. read more

Fireball after fireball, vodka after vodka...who knows if I was actually even at Granby Theater at said check-in on the my iPhone? :) Is it true they are closing down? That's what I've heard. Bummer... I hope not. I'll add to what I haven't covered before. There's typically a cover to get in. That would deter me from going there but I've been lucky to be with the right group. Still...it's only $5 or $10. The VIP section is off the hook. Lounge around with your entourage and take lots of cool pics. Since my last visit they've done some really cool upscale lighting to the place that has given the venue a much classier touch. There's a table in the middle of the dance floor now and it looks like they've added some staging areas near the stair cases so the dance floor doesn't appear as big... I don't mind the table. It's a good place to park your drink while you get your groove on. The stage areas are cool for people watching. If I remember correctly they have a few tables so it's almost like a mini area for groups to hang. If you get the right DJ this place will certainly be off the hook. read more

Came here with some friends without having any expectations other than it's a gutted theater with a dance floor and a huge disco ball. The "tables" (places where you can get a bottle service or whatever) are on the rising balconies in the back of the theater. This is where my friends and I set up shop. I thought it was pretty cool since you kinda get your own bathroom (only those with a balcony reservation can use the upstairs bathrooms). However, I think it's weird that these areas are in the back of the whole place. I imagine you'd want to be closer to the dance floor. Either way, cool concept and it's nice having a home base to chill at away from the main area when not dancing and you want to be away from the crowds. The drinks were good, there was a lot of space on the dance floor, and the place was well-ventilated. The reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because the music was weak. It wasn't necessarily what was played, but more the delivery of it. The transitions weren't smooth and it's like you had to stop dancing in between songs. I would mention the DJ's name but he is easily forgettable with those whack skills. Overall, fun place to check out in Norfolk--highly recommended! After some 'problems' over the last year or so, it seems that the glorious lady that is the Granby Theater has gotten back over the hump and is once again open for business. And that is a good thing. My excuse/reason for getting out of the house and hanging out on the Granby Corridor was LOMP (Local Original Music Party), a celebration of local music and artists that had its inaugural event here. The plan is for this to become a once a month thing, and we are all hoping that it has found a permanent home at the GT. The place is spacious yet intimate due to the multiple levels of seating and standing areas. I'm sure that this place can get really crazy when it is set up as a club....but as far as a place to go hear live music, this place rocks! The dance floor is spacious enough that you can stand on the floor yet not get trampled. Plenty of cool little nooks and crannies all over the place that can provide 'vertical stabilization' as the evening progresses. As far as a place to hang out a drink like a fish, well, maybe not so much. My one trip to the bar to fetch a beer didn't turn out so wonderfully, the service somewhat set records for slowness (my gawd, how long does it really take to open a bottle of Corona and squeeze a lime into it??)...and don't come here looking for low drink prices either, although it is probably typically priced for this type of venue. The problems of the past do seem to draw the attention of the local popo, you can usually find a cruiser or two out front. Don't let that throw you, though. read more

I bet that you look good on the dance floor, dancing to electropop like a robot from 1984. I don't know why, but there's hardly any dancing on Granby Street. Real dancing. Like a big dance floor, not a few tables cleared next to the bar. Granby Theater is for dancing. It's mostly electropop. They have Top 40 nights, but generally they mix the music so much you can't recognize the songs. My favorite night for dancing there is EuroNight, which is the first Saturday of the month. Each month, they feature a different country: Greece, Denmark, Bulgaria, you name it. The theater itself is gorgeous and holds to its historic roots. Inside there are several bars and it's very large and spread out. There are tables and seated areas on all levels, as well as by the dance floor. There's also a coat check, which is great because I usually have to leave my coat in the car and freeze when I head out to Granby Street in the winter (or risk my nice coat getting sloshed on at a bar, no thanks). I still prefer the dance nights at the Wave, it's more my style. Granby Theater is a more grindy type of dancing, where as the Wave is more alternative/indie dancing. But Granby Theater is a wonderful place to spend an evening. If you dance enough to work up an appetite, you can hit up Granby Street Pizza for a slice after (they are open late night). read more

There is a bartender here that will try to scam you. Two nights ago I paid my $15 tab for two drinks with a credit card and tipped 20% on the card. I checked my coat at the door and only had a twenty, so I asked the bartender if he would break a twenty for me so I could tip the coat check person. He said, yes and handed me back $14 (one 5 and nine 1s). I turned and counted my money and then realized that he gave me the wrong amount. I went back and told him he counted the cash and said, "You ordered a bud light." I told him that I didn't and then he asked, "What did you need to break a twenty for then?" I said I have to tip the coat check person. He went to the register and got the rest of my money, handed it to me and then sarcastically exclaimed, "Thanks for the tip!" This guy probably pulls this scam normally. If he's willing to rip off patrons I'm sure he's ripping off the owner too. It's depressing to know that there are people like this in the world and they work in Norfolk. read more

We bought expensive VIP tickets and got nothing special but ushered into the club. It was overly full, the dj got drunk, the bouncers weren't breaking up fights or handling the over drunk patrons, they were running out of liquor (except top shelf) and waitresses even walked out on them. They were managed VERY badly! We went on New Years and we ended up figuring out New Years had come from everyone on the dance floor having their cell phones out because the dj messed it up. We paid over 60sum$s for our tickets and we had more fun in the hotel we rented that night because we couldn't dance because the dj couldn't keep a beat. We asked why and it turned out the owner let a friend dj the event. We should have gotten our money back because we drove over an hour to get to a good party and all we got were a bunch of drunk kids playing on their cell phones. We got hit in the head on the dance floor by selfie sticks! We won't be back! read more

St. Valentine's 2022 featured comedian Mark Viera who was very good. Everything else about my Valentine's evening out with my wife and friends at the Granby Theater was extremely disappointing. They falsely advertised steak and chicken on the menu with table service, but served gumbo, rice, more rice, pasta, lumpia, French fries, popcorn shrimp, sliders, etc., via buffet. Management claimed there were supply issues - a weak argument considering this is one of the biggest restaurant nights of the year that they advertised weeks ago. Are they saying their food managers didn't plan ahead of time? What a coincidence that the previous menu and all the details for this event mysteriously disappeared from their social media sites. Finally, thanks for the overpriced wine with automatic gratuity. Got to make up the profit margin somehow. So, let's call it what it is - scam, false advertising, shady restaurant-business practices. I'm sure my post on their social media sites will disappear shortly like the original menu, but I'll share this one with as many restaurant review sites and through word-of-mouth as possible. I will continue to support locally-owned venues with good menus, fair prices, and who deliver on their promised promotions, but take a wild guess how often we'll be frequenting this establishment. Meh. Having lived in New York and California, I've been to a fair amount of clubs. Some good, some bad. Not to say that I'm a regular clubber, but I do enjoy clubbing on occasion. Granby Theater seems to be the "best" club Norfolk has to offer (at least that I've encountered thus far), which isn't saying a lot. I really like the concept, and the place itself isn't bad. It's clean, well-staffed, and the drinks aren't over-priced. It just didn't seem very lively when I went (on a Friday), though I hear Saturdays are better. I just don't think it's worth paying a cover to get into. read more

What's great: Gorgeous interior. It is a historic building and the architectural detail is stunning. I found the staff at the door and my cocktail waitress very friendly. The VIP ($5 extra when I went) gets you the possibility of a table w/seats down front and a cocktail waitress. However there aren't that many tables so if you aren't there early you might not get one of these tables. A cool staff member (manager?) was kind enough to offer to put a small cocktail table for my group of 3 down front on the side which was super nice! There are some big tables overlooking the dance floor and if a small group occupies one but has extra space you should be able to politely ask to share. I might ask a staff member to help with that request. I thought the sound was good although loud (I brought my earplugs and used them), and I think this place has a lot of promise as a music venue. Not so great: well there is a full bar, but there were no craft beers available. Only corporate macro lagers (Bud, Corona etc). And Yuengling, which is the best of the bunch, and somewhere in the crafty zone. Absurd in this day and age to not have A single local beer when there are 9 breweries within 5 miles. Well, cocktail waitress said no craft beers but being me I went to the bar to double check this. Turns out there were three craft beers there. Just 3, not three brands, i'm talking one bottle of Devils backbone gold leaf lager, one bottle of port city monumental ale, and one can of free verse. Told the bartender I was thrilled, and would buy all three but would send my cocktail waitress back for them because I thought that was only fair to my waitress. She promised she would hold them for me. When the waitress goes there 5 min later I find out all three were sold. What kind of BS. She promised she would hold these beers for me and then they're sold within a few minutes? She left them sitting on the bar as opposed to back in the fridge. Supposedly the other bartender sold them. And honestly it's not like they were busy, there was hardly anyone at the bar. Message to bar: people obviously want craft beer, why not stock some instead of just corporate swill? And your female bartender June 5 side bar is not very customer service oriented. I didn't even get an apology. She just blamed the other bartender. With some craft beers and a bartender who gave a rats ass this would've been a five-star experience. read more

I want to start by saying this review is highly opinionated. I think it can be agreed though that the Granby St Theatre turns out a ton of business every week by providing (relatively) larger-scale nighttime entertainment. They do a good job of both appealing to the masses while attracting a crowd that will pay more for entrance and drinks. This crucial element feeds into the loop that both makes them hip and makes most of its customers feel hip. That being said, I'd like to say that, personally, at 29, I don't feel too connected to that scene anymore. I realize that it's for a younger crowd. Friday nights they roll out a good bit of club house music that has a very European sound to it. The clientele dress nice, sometimes even overdressing, and there is an atmosphere of poshness projected. read more

So today I went to the The Granby Theater for New Years and was horribly treated. Will not be going back there ever again and will let everyone know. That's why that place was empty. People were leaving before 12 even hit. And to have two white men speak so inappropriately to a black women is unspeakable to me. If I was speaking to a "manager" then this place should be closed down because the leadership they have is terrible. The bartenders and staff were friendly, the patrons were a nice mix of people (sharp dressers were bumping shoulders with the Affliction wearing set), and the music ranged from Top 40, old school 80s and 90s set to club beats, and house versions of Shania Twain and Dirty Dancing (what the...??). Too funny. The interior is VAST and very nicely done. A nice little spot to enjoy some great, high-energy dancing. I had an awesome time. And yes, COAT CHECK IS A MANDATORY $2. The decorations were pretty nice and the staff was also pretty nice but nothing about this venue gave me the wow factor. First and last time in this place! First I'm served a drink with rancid pineapple juice...then you take my lighter and refuse to accept responsibility for losing it. Mangement acted liked they were too good to dig through the tub to get it. At this point I voice my distaste in how they handled losing MY PROPERTY!!! Then when I tried to retrieve it I was told to be escorted out. Security mocked the situation. They are thieves! It's not about the value of the item it's the principle. And if you're going to snatch lighters and post your a smoke free facility then I shouldn't have smelled smoke and my lighter should have retuned to me. Compared to most of the clubs at the Oceanfront, Granby Theater is humongous. Even though it's extremely spacious, this club is still crowded. It's got a nice look to it, velvet-y and upscale. The best thing is there's tons of seating, so you can pass out after you sweated your curls out on the dance floor. The music is what you'd expect, Top 40 pop-tart ubiquity, but occasionally a good old school tune will come on. It's not really anything special, but it's a nice and comfortable place in downtown Norfolk and the cover is usually low. It falls into the something for everyone category, so it's a good place to get a bunch of friends together. read more

I've actually only been here a few times late night when the cover has been removed, but they play the best music around and it kind of filters out all of the trash bags that a lot of other clubs are full of. Never had to wait too long for a drink and never heard a song I didn't like; definite bonus points for the VIP club seating at the top. If you're looking for a higher end dance club, I don't know any other place in Hampton Roads that rivals it. read more

I give Granby Theater five stars for the building itself and the gorgeous restoration and redo of its interior a few years back complete with historically accurate gold leaf detailing and L.A. worthy red carpet swank. You really have to see it to believe it's in Norfolk. Three or four stars for the rest. They've had somewhat of a hard time establishing an identity for this local treasure. It's a dance club and works great as such. It's got these uber cool tiered balconies that you can reserve (at a price). Each one has cushy seating and tables so you can VIP it with your crew if that's your thing. Really there's no place like it anywhere near here. It's a high end night club. The crowd is a little too pretty for my taste a lot of times. As in, a lot of the dudes look like they've spent WAY too much time dolling up for the evening. Huge turn off. But whatever. The thing is it's also a beautiful space for arts performances and events. It's got a decent sized little stage and seats can be placed on the dance floor. I've seen and even organized a couple of shows there in my old job (including the local music awards). I wish it could be utilized as such a little more often. read more

Read review and even a friend of mine has been there earlier in the summer and since hes been to alot of clubs like me he said it was awesome. so we went. The dress code is casual club attire i guess? i wore a express button down and nice jeans and nice sneakers. so did most of everyone there. Entrance: I got hasseled by the doorman. We are all NY had NY drivers licenses. I gave him mine and he assumed it was fake. Im 22 years old. he asked me when did i get my id i looked at him confused and said well it says right there when it was issued. he gave me an attitude and said he didnt care anymore and just let me in. Look i have done some security for events and clubs before i know it can get frustrating but christ i have never given anyone attitude over an I.D. just to let them in.. Venue 5/5: its a refurbished theater. very classy and carpeted. i would compare it to a smaller scale upscale NYC club-ish. $10 cover and not bad at all. This guy is used to paying $20 covers and sometimes more. Also in the bathroom there was a guy there handing out towels and even soaping your hands for ya! I even struck up a convo with him. left that guy a pretty good tip Bar 4/5: if you read my peabodys review you know i have a problem with overpriced drinks that dont give you what you pay for. However both bartenders I had made the drinks pretty strong. I had both a rum and coke and a redbull vodka. One of my buddies had a double jack and coke and the girls had some girly drinks idk like sex on the beach and stuff lol. We all said the drinks were strong and good however they were quite expensive. idk exactly how much i paid but i didnt have too much of a problem with it. 1 of my friends tho did complain that in the span of about 2 hours he dropped close to $100 on drinks but he was drunk and an idiot with money lol Music 4/5: DJ was good alot of house/techno/EDM rapand even some reggaeton and merengue. I was in heaven with the music. My favorite music genres all mixed together! Near the end he even played some Journey which even though im not a fan i started singing along. However some of his transitions were bad and took people of their rythum Dancefloor 1/5: here is where things go bad quick! We went on a saturday and the place was mostly dudes. maybe a handful of girls scattered around the place and most were in those tight knit groups. Usually i can make it work but 95% of these girls were soooo stuck up (and thats me putting it extremely nicely). I been to clubs and bars all over the states and i usually have no problem dancing with girls and even the ones that say no are nice about it(rejection is part of the game fellas!) i ended up only dancing with 2 girls the entire night cuz most of the girls were there with their boyfriends or with the groups. IF you didnt come to dance why waste your money!!?!!? Also the dance floor was very small for such a big venue. alot of nudging your way around or occasionally having to stiff arm people to make room for yourself. atmosphere 2/5: sadly because of the dance floor situation i have to give this a 3. Additionally i got sick of guy and even some of the bouncers! coming up to me mocking me cuz of my muscles. IM NOT KIDDING! one time a bouncer walked right up to me and my friends looked at me and did a muscle pose and said "ohh yeahhh i think im soooo big!" which was wierd cuz yes im a big guy but he was bigger than me! also i caught one dude randomly talking trash about me and my friends. finally it was because it was alot of dudes dancing amongst themselves since the many stuck up girls refused to dance with anyone. If you have a boyfriend thats expected but cmon ladies. I even had dudes talk to me about the girl situation thats how bad it was. thats why i have to give this place a 2. The dancefloor/girl situation absolutely destroyed this place for me. Im willing to give it another shot someday but geez read more

Came out here for the first time after an event and had a great time! Do not mess with security! Not only are you gonna get ID'd, you get checked by a metal detector wand. Once inside, I really like how the place is set up. Most places I've gone to are restaurants by day, clubs by night. This place seems to be solely a club. I got to go in with some friends as a VIP where we got a whole section to ourselves to enjoy the night. The section had plenty of seats and our server made sure that we were happy with drinks in our hands. Such a fun night! read more
