I was given truffles from Chubby Chipmunk as a gift while visiting with friends in the Lead/Deadwood area. After experiencing the pleasure of eating them, I would have to say that Chubby Chipmunk makes some of the best truffles ever. They are super creamy and smooth, and they don't skimp on size! I went back to buy several more after trying them and I couldn't believe how beautiful they all looked. My husband likes white chocolate and I like dark. They have it all... white, milk and dark and they are all excellent. Unfortunately, chubby is a 15 hour drive from my home, so I won't have a chance to get there much. I am considering having some shipped since I don't have anything that compares to these where I live. I can't believe I have been driving past this place for 15 years. A friend in Lead told us that this place had the best chocolates. I am not a truffle person, always seemed like a waste of time, but after eating these, I see what a truffle is really supposed to be like. My cousins who were with me seemed to agree as they bought $60 worth to take home with them. I will be stopping here every time I visit the hills. If you are anywhere near Deadwood, you just have to stop here. My favorite is the white chocolate buttercream. I cut it into 8 pieces, and it is just sooooooo good. read more

I was given truffles from Chubby Chipmunk Chocolates as a treat for Easter from my loving wife. After eating my first truffle, I can now see what all the hoopla was about. They were super creamy and smooth, a chocolate lovers delight. Don't let the outside of this 50's looking gas station steer you away from such a worthy experience. Inside, the older wood look candy counters and displays add to the charm of this place. The help was friendly, the owner Mary "Chip" Tautkus allowed us to take pictures inside. Some of the best candy I've ever had. I have raced up the hill countless times after work hoping to get here before they close at 5pm. They have even stayed open for me a few times when I've called in a desperate panic because I was not going to make it. Thankfully they do have a vending machine outside stocked with their signature truffles for those late night munchies. They ship nationwide (for a price) but if you can afford it, it's well worth the money. read more

Should get more than 5 stars I almost skipped stopping in the first time, it was late, I had finished a 10 day shift at the Gilt Edge mine, and it was half a block out of my way on the drive back to Denver. but the Chubby Chipmunk was Highly recommended by a friend who never eats sweets, to my knowledge. The outside of the building looks like a gas station converted to an antique shop, but the truffle magic happening within is beyond compare. Rich, creamy, high quality ingredients. Every truffle is an individual work of art, from the imaginative flavors to the lovely decorations on top. In the winter they will ship, I highly recommend trying these to any chocolate lover. These chocolates are AMAZING. I received a beautiful box shaped like an acorn and filled with these delectable chocolates. I LOVE chocolates: See's and Ghirardelli have visited my mouth more than others, but I have also had my share of Godiva and Dean & Deluca and M&Ms over the years. However, a year ago I was gifted Chubby Chipmunk chocolates and I am a FAN. It makes my mouth water just thinking of them. Not gonna lie. Chubby Chipmunk Hand-Dipped Chocolates could possibly be the cause of future weight gain and money loss. These truffles are amazing, plain and simple. There are so many different flavors to choose from. The owner and her staff are super helpful, so telling them what you normally like usually ends with you eating the perfect truffle. Pros: The service is astounding. The truffles are some of the best chocolates you will ever try (My suggestions: For white chocolate, try the lemon pie truffle, for milk chocolate try the chipmunks treasure, try the baileys dark chocolate). Cute location,and like the last reviewer said. Vending machine. Vending machine-- it was worth repeating-- full of truffles. Cons: Pricey. They are well worth your money, but it's not an every day treat, that's for sure. The only other complaint I have is, while you are there and picking out flavors it's great, but when you get it home it's hard to decipher which is which until you dig in. They have a topping chart, but it's not very updated and doesn't have all the flavors on there. I think a better chart to send home would make it a lot easier for those of us who can't remember what the 20 chocolate we bought looked like. read more

I read about this place right here on Yelp and am now so very glad I did. I have been to Deadwood several times and have never noticed this little candy shop in the past, this time my wife and I had our eyes searching for it as we entered Deadwood. First off this little place is so cool on the outside and gets a lot cooler once you walk through the doors. Once you finish looking at all the little decorations all over the place and head upto the counter bliss begins. My wife and I bought a box of 8 different ones and decided we would cut each one in half so we could both try them all and not eat them so fast(failed on the not so fast part). Anyways they were absolutely amazing and with out a doubt the best either of us had ever had, When we arrived back home we both wished we would have bought a few dozen or hundreds, maybe even thousands instead of the 8 we had! We have another trip planned for Deadwood in 2 months and this will for sure be stop numero uno!! read more

It was divine, with rich flavors and textures. (The hot mama was especially interesting.) I would say its better than Godiva. My family and I even went back in for seconds after finishing our five pack. The service was great and the clerk was very friendly. They even have a 24-7 chocolate vending machine! Chubby Chipmunk is a GREAT chocolate place. It has a nice, local atmosphere, and it's totally worth the stop. The truffle-o-matic (truffle vending machine) is a great feature. This place was recommended by family from the area so when we saw it along our drive we just had to stop. I expected a Swiss chalet but instead it appears to be a converted gas-station. The business was closed but thankfully has a "Chub-o-Matic" vending machine outside for 24 hour service. A 4-pack of truffles was $11 and I had one $1 bill and one $10 bill so had to get change from the car-wash next door. After inserting the $1 bill and 40 quarters I made my selection and wow, talk about worth it! The kitsch value was huge as well. I highly recommend a stop at this business! read more
