So disappointed in Chubby Trout. Where should I start?.....My husband ordered a beer which came warm. We got our food 1 hr after we ordered (with our fries cold), not the correct items on my burger as stated on the menu. My husband's $18 brisket mac and cheese was very small with only 2 pcs of Brisket. I watched the kitchen staff of 10 stand, text and eat food of plates. As a destination for a quick lunch I was very disappointed with the service. As most lunches we had little over 1 hour. Holding off until 1pm, thot we might miss the lunch rush. We did... there we only 4 other visible table in restaurant. We were seated immediately but had to wait 20 minutes for our server to even approach. We asked our waitress to wait and to immediately take our order, and requested that she "rush it" if she could. We were bluntly informed that she had another table and our food can be prepared only after the others had been served. Never did we ask her to place our order before others, just that we couldn't wait for her to disappear again. Our order came out 40 minutes later, leaving us 5 to 10 minutes to eat and get out out. Obviously, had to take most of it with us. Food was good, but waitress was both rude and very inattentive. We cannot reccomend this restaurant for lunch unless you have an afternoon to kill. read more

The restaurant is amazing. The catered food however: boiled chicken that was dry, under done beef that also seemed to be boiled or steamed. Veggies had no flavor. And the caper sauce was split, and over cooked. read more

Wow, what a surprise. We are staying at a hotel close by and based on reviews figured we would give this place a shot. Ceviche was amazing. Just the right amount of acid and spice to go with the fish, tomato and avocado. My wife had the Chubby trout. If you like great food get this. If you have no tastebuds order something else. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce complimented the trout flavor perfectly. I had the brisket based on the waitress recommendation. I am a native Texan and find it difficult to find edible let alone good brisket. Was in the area on business and this restaurant was right in front of my hotel. What a pleasant surprise. First a nice array of craft beers, tried two that I've never had before (and can't remember the names, sorry) and was quite impressed. For dinner I went with the sampler of their signature fish dishes. All three were fantastic. Lightly breaded and done perfectly. The new location is worlds better than the last one! The service, food, atmosphere... EVERYTHING is better. We initially swore we would never come back here, but thankfully we have the new location a chance. The sushi is great, and the food tastes fresh. Made me the wrong dish. It came with bread and I asked if I could keep it while they made the correct dish as I was starved. They were stand offish. The waitress was also being cut at 4pm, and trust me, I waited tables for 6 years, she was rude in her delivery like we were a burden to her. Food was ok. Got the veggie pasta and it was ok. My gf got the Captain Crunch role and the spicy salmon and cream cheese rolls and she did not like the spicy salmon. I visit Elkhart a few times a year for work and love coming to the Chubby Trout. The food is consistently very good, the drinks are excellent, and the staff is lovely. This is my go-to restaurant in Elkhart- delicious sushi, wonderful staff and daily specials! This was my first visit to the new location- typically I'm not a fan of locally-owned restaurants expanding - but they did a great job- it's much bigger but there are separate rooms so the cozy feel was preserved along with the rustic feeling- we were in a time crunch to see a performance/ on a Tuesday night there was a 45 min wait for Sushi- which our server Tracy checked for us- and we appreciated/ instead ordered the salmon salad and brisket with mac & cheese- our server was very conscientious of our time crunch and brought water, cocktails and meals efficiently, but spaced, for our enjoyment and brought our check and change right away. I know now I have to leave work early to get sushi during the week. Great place. Great name. read more

We had no idea where to eat in Elkhart, IN. On a whim we decided to go to Chubby Trout because, well...with a name like that, we just HAD to. And what a surprise. The place was great from the minute we walked in to the minute we walked out. The service was awesome and we were not the easiest to accommodate as we had ten and just showed up. The hostess found us room very quickly and once we were all seated we had drink orders in shortly after. Food was top notch! My friend had the signature dish - chubby trout - and the rest of us had an assortment of other things. Not one complaint was heard. The prime rib was ok but over cooked. I didn't want to wait so I didn't send it back. The Zander was ok but heavily breaded. What a great menu! Great service and food was e,exceptional! We had a party of 6 and ordered 3 appetizers - mussels , crab dip and pretzels. All awesome. Prime Rib , Walleye,Mahi Mahi, Salmon and King Tuna Sushi! All of us shared as everything soo good! Not too often 6 people all have food cooked and tasting perfect! Only two comments that would have got 5 stars- White wine in with garlic butter and muscles and mango sauce for salmon just a bit too sweet, needed some red peppers to cut a bit. Chubby Trout... My wife and I ordered Porter House Steaks, as a belated Valentines meal. I have to admit that the salads that we ordered as a side were impeccably prepared and dressing was very well done as well. Back to the entrees which were to be prepared medium and medium rare, and "smothered in onions and mushrooms", came to our table charred on the outside and raw in the center. The smothered onions and mushrooms, were scarcely covered and clearly your typical cheap canned mushrooms. The steak itself was 30-40% fat and gristle. Definitely not of the quality you would expect from an over $30.00 a plate meal. Service? Our waitress appeared to be attending 10 - 15 tables and tending bar at the same time so service was exceedingly slow but, this clearly was a failure of management in being properly staffed. Bottom line, the Chubby Trout, is a bottom feeder. Perhaps they should consider renaming themselves as the Fat Carp... This was our first and last trip to this dive. read more

Let me start by saying that the service and beer were good. The food, however, was disappointing. I had the smoked prime rib. It was 50% fat plus I did not enjoy the smoke flavor. My wife had a fish sampler plate that was overly breaded and appeared to be deep fried. The mashed potatoes w/ gravy could have been thrown like a snowball ; I won't mention the coleslaw. Stopped in here on a Saturday night at 8:00PM. We were sat immediately. The place was busy but a table in the bar area was open. We had the smoked fish dip and tuna tar tar apps. Very good. Then we got the sushi boat for 2. Sushi was good. Had a couple glasses of wine. The bar tender was our server and she was great. We even saved room for desert. We had the tempura cheese cake!!!! We really like what they have done with the place and have been back numerous times. One suggestion however, if you go Monday night it's half off sushi night. We tried the lobster pasta special, walleye, and trout. All were good and the portions were on the larger size. The chocolate cake dessert was the biggest dessert I've seen for ($7?) $8 in a long time. It was basically 2 pieces of cake with scoops of ice cream and whipped cream. Four people could have easily split it. Our waitress was young and perky. I would definitely eat here again when in town and avoid the chains (Applebee's, Red Lobster, Texas Roadhouse). read more
