I've been eating at Hong Kong my entire life. When they opened years ago, when I was just a kid, my entire extended family would get together and eat here. They'd set up a loooong table for us to all sit together and we would be here for hours. It was so much fun. The staff is so friendly. Their kids were kids when we were there and they enjoyed playing around the restaurant while their parents were working. It was great. Their egg rolls are my favorite. They're just cabbage I believe and I have no problems with that. The egg drop soup is also good. I remember all of my family members loving the soup. They also have chicken wings that are my favorite. They used to come in an order of 4 now I think there might only be 3 in an order, I could be wrong. It's a whole wing, drum and flat. They're fantastic. They are sticky and sort of sweet, almost have an orange taste to them. I am a huge fan. My favorite entree's are either beef and broccoli, kung pow chicken, mongolian beef, chicken in hoisin sauce or spicy fragrant pork. You can always tell them if you want any of them spicy or even really spicy. They can take the normal recipe and kick it up a level or two of spice for you, we usually do this. The building has been here for quite some time. I can agree with most of the complainers that the building is not as clean as it possibly could be. But they're doing something right because they pass health inspections. They do charge you a fee to use a credit card. I can't really blame them for that since they're being charged to have one. Be a good person and just pay with cash! Cash is king! Right!? So look past all of the haters and give Hong Kong your business. despite me thinking this could possibly just be another hole in the wall chinese place, the food was absolutely incredible! It tasted so delicious and they give you a HUGE portion for the price. the food was also ready in less than 20 minutes from when i called it in, and the lady was so incredibly nice and sweet. amazing! read more

This place is a sad excuse for a Chinese restaurant. Ordered from their lunch menu and was not impressed at all! I ordered the general chicken, but upon tasting it tastes more like a teriyaki chicken and at that, a very weak flavored one. The fried rice that came with the meal was simply white rice that had soy sauce added to it. I thought for a minute that the egg drop soup would redeem the meal, it looked great! However, it tasted like cheap chicken stock seasoned with a lot of pepper. I would've been happy with giving this meal a one star, but the sheer quantity of the food for $5.50 forced me to give two stars. read more

Its unfortunate and apparent the crazy MI dining restrictions are killing this business. The food was hit & miss and we could tell they've been forced to make cut backs on quality, but have tried to raise prices on items. The egg rolls with duck sauce were great, but I do not recommend the lo mein at all. They used regular spaghetti noodles that turned out gray and bland, worst of all it included cold veggies and was priced as a meal at $9. If you eat here stick to some basics they do right, orange or tso chicken with regular white rice. The family that runs this is incredibly nice though so much so I really felt bad I hated the food. I hope things get better for this place. 3 stars, just ok. read more

This place had a terrible smell, my dad said it was like dead mice. The air conditioning duct work is 4" septic pipe attached to the ceiling via J hooks. That not withstanding, the place is not very clean. There was yellow goo on the tea pot, the windows looked like something found in Fallout 4, the bathrooms were equivalently dirty. The funniest thing was when my dad asked for extra sweet/sour sauce for his entree, the waitress pointed at his plate saying "I put some right there, you have plenty!" And left! Hysterically funny look on my dads face. Reminded me of the Soup Nazi, "No SOUP for YOU! 2 Years!" Yet the wonton soup was very delicious with blanched broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, and cabbage. Despite all the negative vibes, that wonton soup might make this place worth a try. This a delicious place to visit if you want some standard Americanized Chinese food. You'll find all of your typical chicken, pork, and beef dishes here as well as a few others. Don't be fooled by the average looking outside, just step inside and you'll immediately sense the legitimacy of the place. Oh - and the portion sizes are huge, so expect leftovers even if you have a midwestern sized appetite. read more

Second worst Chinese food I've had in my life. (1st was a place that served me ice cold garlic chicken with no garlic sauce, soy sauce all over, and - I'm not kidding- ketchup as sweet n sour sauce.) Too bad we listened to the reviews on Google. Yuck. The food here was cold, the vegetables were uncooked, the garlic sauce and sweet n sour sauce were both awful. The "white meat chicken" was fatty. I have been coming to this place on and off since I was a young child. I have many great family memories here. Some of the food is really great and some not so much. The family works very hard and is very kind. When I am in the area I would rather spend my money here at this local family place than at a chain restaurant any day. The decor is as it was when I was young even the restrooms seem the same. Its like a time warp back into my childhood when dining here. That's why I will continue to come here when out this way. read more

Years ago, I was a loyal regular at the old Hong Kong Palace in Mattawan, which was owned by family of this establishment. The Plainwell location uses identical recipes, based on what I can tell. I'm giving this place 5 stars because of two reasons: 1. THE best hot and sour soup that you'll taste anywhere (unlike anything I've ever had before), and 2. Spicy Fragrant Beef (again, unique flavor that you just can't find elsewhere). I can understand why some of the reviewers don't love this place, because their food DOES taste different than any Chinese restaurant that I've ever tried. I'm originally from SW Michigan, have lived in Chicago for years, and eat a lot of Chinese food. Maybe not everyone agrees, but I personally drive out of my way to visit Hong Kong Restaurant. If you want generic tasting, middle-of-the-road Chinese food, then there are lots of options for that. If you want something different that might pique your taste buds the way it does mine, give the place a try! read more

The best Chinese food in the middle of nowhere. The buffet across the street seemed like a better value until I compared the two.The buffet food is not as good and you can't take it out (not that you'd want to anyway). The lunch portions are enormous. Lunch comes with a free soup (not a fan of the hot and sour, but the egg drop soup is excellent), and egg roll, you can probably save the egg roll for a bite later instead of snacking of Cheetos or Lays. Their dinners can serve as two meals if you get another portion of rice. I'm a big fan of the Mongolian beef, the chicken and broccoli is awesome too! I don't really like sweet and sour chicken, but I enjoyed it without the sauce. I'd go here if I still lived in Michigan. It is a shame it looks so run down (-1 star!), but if you're just ordering takeout and don't care for the atmosphere, get the best value food you can get! read more

The family is SO sweet and gives great service. I've been going since I was a kid, not too often since I don't live too close... The worst Chinese food I've ever had. The General Tso's I ordered was 75% hard pieces. The other 25% was dry chicken. The rice had hard chunks in it and got cold and dry in 15 min. Yes the servings are large but quantity isn't better than quality. The soup and fortune cookie were the best part. I wish I could get a refund for that disaster and one star was being generous.
