This was my first time coming here to Hunan Gardens and won't be my last. I also tried Moo Shu Pork for the first time ever. Where has this been all of my life. It was flavorful and so yummy. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They give you a bowl crispy wontons with a delicious dipping sauce. The lunch specials, after tax is less than $12. The lunch specials include your choice of soups - egg drop, wonton or hot and sour. Plus, your choice of egg roll or crab rangoons. Let me tell you, the crab rangoons were a huge and delicious! Paw Paw Chinese restaurants.... Get on their level! First, the food was mostly meat with some vegetables for flavoring. Second, the food was lava hot enough that it arrived at home 17 minutes later still hot. Third they didn't just scrape this from a buffet and call it a day because I had asked for SPICY general Tso's chicken and got exactly that.... Fresh made, extra spicy and still crispy but saucy. Service was supposed to take 20 and it arrived in 10 minutes. I've been disappointed by take out in Paw Paw, Otsego, and Portage. This did not disappoint. Would recommend. read more

This place was amazing! Authentic Chinese food! The egg rolls were made on-site much better than any other we have ever had. The wonton soup was delicious. The noodles were delicate and the soup was very flavorful. Owner came around and checked on every table. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant is very clean and the atmosphere is very inviting. My only disappointment is that we won't be able to visit more often as we are vacationing from Ohio. This is a good place to meet your Chinese food craving. My hubby loves the happy family-- great taste and large portions! I got the sesame chicken. Good taste but the chunks of chicken were a bit too big and thus it was tougher to chew. It might have been a bit over cooked to ensure the larger pieces of chicken were cooked all the way through. I'm very fond of Chinese food and Hunan Gardens was recommended to me by a friend with a $25 gift certificate. We got there early around 4:00pm and were seated promptly of course. A great free appetizer of fried wanton skins and dipping sauce came to the table quickly. The sauce was fantastic. The menu was quite extensive and not only had specials but several specials. Loads of chicken seafood and pork as well as Vegetarian dishes were on the large menu. My wife chose a special, Chicken and aspergarus. I had a regular menu item of double cooked pork. The meals came quickly and were nicely plated and smelled delicious. After taking our first bites we knew we not had chosen excellent dishes. The meat was cooked perfectly and so were the vegetables. The veggies were crispy and nicely cooked. The perfect match of crisp and cooked. We had both asked for medium heat and we're pleased with the degree of spice. Their tea is complimentary and so good ( I actually took some of their tea leaves home). I always order the veggie fried rice, medium spicy and no egg..and I'm never disappointed. New to the area and everyone highly recommended Chin Chin...our first attempt at going was unsuccessful so we stumbled onto this gem!! A must go! By far the best! We did try Chin Chin as well and as Californians I will say that Hunan Garden hands down has the best food of the two. Quality, authenticity and amazing customer service. The crab rangoons, Mongolian beef, pepper steak & onion, and the kungpao shrimp all amazing! The chicken is cooked to perfection! I love how they give you complimentary hot tea and won tons in the beginning and sorbet at the end of dinner. It's small gestures like these that make the experience that much better. Got takeout from Hunan Gardens because Chinn Chinn was closed for the holidays. I've never much cared for Hunan, but had a hankering for Mongolian Beef. I was very underwhelmed. The same dish at Chinn Chinn is LOADED with flavor. This just tasted like some fresh ingredients tossed into a wok. Something is missing from their sauce. I also asked for extra spicy. When you do that at Chinn Chinn, they nearly hurt you with the heat. I had to add Sriracha to the Hunan dish, but that's not the same as cooking with roasted chilis. There was NO heat, and it was labeled "SPICY" on the takeout container. The food is good, the prices are reasonable...but it's no Chinn Chinn. When I moved here back in 2006 I was amazed that a town like Kalamazoo could have not one, but two fabulous places for excellent Chinese food. I'm telling you, it was amazing. Over the years the quality has very slowly declined a bit but I hadn't really noticed the drop as big as I did last night. The two dishes we had (chicken and broccoli and shrimp chow mein) were underwhelming, lacking taste, flavor or character. The roast pork fried rice which had been a staple and favorite of mine tasted funny and odd. Nothing like I've had before. The egg drop soup (another favorite) was not hot, had an off color to it and was way too salty. As I picked up my order at the Texas corners location I was surprised to see not one diner in the restaurant. I've never seen that before. Maybe it was a sign? Three or four years ago this would have been a five plus star review. I'm disappointed to have to pen a review like this of a place I've loved and raved about for years. But unfortunately sometimes the truth hurts. I can only hope that the management of what was once an incredible place to enjoy Chinese food will read this and work to improve the food back to the quality it once had. read more

Actually, the food was good as usual. But the service was atrocious. Our waitress waited for about five minutes in an empty restaurant to bring us water and said she would return to take our order. She then went to talk to a patron and took awhile to return. Once we ordered, the food took a very long time to come out. Our waitress never came near us to to check on us, refill our water, or assure us that the food was nearly out. I went to the hostess and asked if she could check. Our waitress be brought our food out five minutes later. We notified her that we would have to take the food to go. She said, "it's only been 12 minutes since I took your order and that is really good. I think you got inpatient because the place is empty!" The truth is, it had been 26 minutes since we gave our order. And we weren't blaming the waitress but she confronted us and didn't apologize. The waitress then did not return to our table. The hostess brought our bill and cashed us out. That waitress was inattentive, unfriendly, discourteous, and impolite. read more

Hands down the best Chinese spot around!! It was my fav when I lived in Michigan and every time I'm in town I have to get some. Customer service is top notch and today they went way above and beyond for me. One small item was missing from my pick up order and when I called and couldn't do a future credit bc I don't live in town anymore they brought it to me.
