Chulla's Café recently relocated from North Highlands to The Plaza At Stanford Ranch in Rocklin, CA. They have an extensive online menu offering local and African cuisine that is absolutely fantastic. Chulla's owner, Tomba, is a very pleasant and approachable guy. We had the pleasure of meeting him and several of his family members who also work at the restaurant while we were there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Lotsa smiles. We dropped in for lunch on a weekday. My wife had the Breakfast Burrito and I had the Crafter Burger with onion rings. Both were delicious with large portions. We also were treated to the special Hibiscus Tea that is made in house with 7 different spices. Yum. Next time you are in the area, I highly recommend Chulla's Café. They are open from 7am to 10 pm Wednesday thru Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy.

Chulla's Cafe made the #3 spot on Yelp's Top 50 Places to eat in the Sacramento area for 2022! After seeing them on the list and reading some of the reviews I knew I had to try their food. As I walked in I was greeted by multiple people and welcomed with smiles. They asked me if I had been in before and after telling them it was my first time they offered me a sample of their amazing Hibiscus tea. It's unlike anything I've had before, but reminds me of a more refreshing (and complex) apple cider. On their website it's noted that the Hibiscus tea is "brewed in-house and spiced with 12 secret spices that evoke jamaica, or sorrel, drinks enjoyed by the African diaspora - yet it is truly unique to Chulla's." I ended up ordering a big cup of the Hibiscus tea and the Hungry Lion Burger. I knew I was going to have two patties on my burger, but I wasn't ready for how big they would be. The burger was huge and had the two patties, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, onion rings, slices bacon, cheddar and Swiss cheeses. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked the way you prefer (I chose medium rare). It also came with some amazing house made fries. I ended up taking more than half my burger home and they refilled my tea before I left, which I thought was super generous of them! After visiting and meeting the amazing owners and staff and trying the food it's clear why so many Yelpers have rated Chulla's five stars! I also heard they're looking to open two more locations, and one of them will be in downtown. I'm excited to have a spot closer to me to get this delicious food, but I'll definitely be back to this original location again soon.

Chicken shawarma and lion King burger to go
    Alyssa Mae C.

Yup, my burger loving husband had to get that hungry lion King as soon as we found out about it. I opted for the other popular chicken shawarma based on reviews. Both were a sight to behold and a dream to devour. Medium doneness is probably enough for the meat patties. The onions were on the stronger side in my opinion. The side sauce was great with the fries or poured right into the entree. Looking forward to coming back for more!

We were in the area so decided to try this out as we had gotten it once when it was on Doordash. It's located in a plaza so no parking issues! There were indoor seating, and the staff were extremely friendly. Tamba was welcoming, engaging, and a funny guy. He gave us samples of the Jamaica drink, which had interesting flavors and was refreshing! So we ordered one and he told us to drink some while we wait for our food, and he'll refill it for us before we leave! Super nice of him! We ordered the Beef Shawarma and Beef Sandwich. Tamba asked if we want spicy sauce and gave us some! The spicy sauce was pretty good! Both entrees were delicious and filling. The food were cheap too! Will definitely return!

Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon

Fantastic customer service. That point is what should be emphasized when reviewing this cafe. The three crew members working that morning checked on us often as to how our morning was going so far. Tamba, the owner was pleasantly conversant (socially distanced with his mask on) and encouraged us to return and sample the other Afro-Caribbean entrees available for lunch and dinner. He also explained that the name Chulla's was his grandma's. The missus was craving for pancakes this chilly spring morning so we decided to go to this highly rated gem in the McLellan AFB area among the other brunch choices in this part of Sactown. And what a great choice it was. Hers Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon. Fluffy and savory combined with the butter and syrup His Chulla's Signature Omelet (egg white option) with avocado slices and roasted potatoes. This entree was enhanced by the sauces and the crispy spuds. Not a fan of potatoes in general but these taters were seasoned perfectly and we gobbled them up. Ours Fresh Hibiscus Tea. Refreshing, crisp and perfect spiciness. After tasting the sample provided by Tamba we decided to get it to-go. Don't forget to try the house hot sauce which will make your meal experience even better. It's quite a drive from us but we're definitely going to return.

I had my eye on this pretty shiny new eats spot for a few months now. Finally being in the area, it won out between the 3 of us of where to eat on a Saturday afternoon. Nice mild day in the mid 60s. So we trotted over past MCClellan AFB and parked in a decent lot of it's own. 2 sides of parking. Only biz there. Maybe 5 cars parked. We were greeted upon entry by the owner. He chatted with every table and diner. A few paper menus and we were ready to order after I had a tough time choosing with all the killer options. We dined outside on the patio in the pleasant but a touch windy weather. Mine: Okra stew with chicken. Absolutely superb. When I eat slowly and savor each bite, It means it is damn good! Boy was it. Love, love, love! Nicely spiced, decent portion size, beautiful presentation and the stew, rice and the grilled veggies all were FIRE! Hers: Fried okra. So golden and perfectly fried. Decent portion. I sampled one. Fantastic. Blows away Church's fried okra which is often darker and the oil is less fresh. A must order! Fried plantains. Decent portion. Wow. A dusting of sugar and other spices and fried to perfection. Not mushy and not like a chip. Right in-between. Came with a tasty yogurt dipping sauce. Amazeballs! Get it! My 18 yr old girl: Beef shwarma. She let me try some. A harmonious bite with the artfully seasoned gyro meat, tomato, onion, lettuce and sauce all present. Soooo soooo good. It came with sone fries that were glistening. Like oil outside the entire fries. Excellent. A step above other fries. Another fab choice. My XL peach smoothie. OMG! Who dropped tha bomb! So thick it would not find it's way up the straw! Real chunks of peaches! Whabam! 100! They shared an XL hibiscus tea. It was excellent. The owner gives every diner a sample of this hibiscus tea. It is refreshing and tasteful. All served on plates that felt like fine dining as was the presentation. You don't find that very much these days. Unpretentious and cares about what they put out. You won't find sloppiness here. We all were very impressed. They serve breakfast, bagel sandos, ommies, stews, burgers, shwarmas, apps with wings, plantains, okra and others goodies. I may have forgotten some. Large and diverse menu. Something for everyone for sure. The owner chatted/checked on us several times. He truly is personable and wants to share his menu with all who come in. A caring and present owner is the best! I can't wait to try a bunch of items I have tagged in my mind already. Iam not sure if I can ever get there before 11AM to try the breakfast items. I do want to get at that peanut stew, shwarmas, steak sando and more! A real deal gem in the heart of North Highlands/Watt Ave. I truly was looking for my momma to slap when eating here! Lol. I'll be seeing you soon Chulla's!

I am so glad I discovered this place on a whim. Everything at this cafe is made fresh, and you can taste the difference. I also think the prices are more than fair given the quality of the food. I have to say, they make the best hibiscus tea I have had in Sacramento. I would recommend coming here for the tea alone. The people that run the restaurant are also very hospitable. They have a coffee bar inside as well which is worth checking out.

This was such a great and welcomed find along my travels for a delicious lunch with probably the most refreshing, unique beverage. I met the owner, who is from West Africa, and he is a friendly and welcoming individual - I enjoyed speaking with him. If I am in the area again, I will be coming back!

Delicious local spot & had it delivered via an app. The Hungry Lioness is a delicious breakfast burrito; It's perfectly gooey and very filling. The green salad has a a decent amount of toppings; shrimp on top really make it pop. The hamburgers are huge & the onion rings on top really complete the meal. Definitely will order here again!

Trying to find a place to satisfy my moms sophisticated palate is a challenge, and pulling up to a rather odd looking building definitely raised an eyebrow. But right as we walked in we were greeted by what seemed to be the manager who kindly walked us through the menu and hyped up their homemade hibiscus tea. Being a man of culture and having watched the end credit scene for the Avengers movie I always wanted to try shawarma, so I ended up ordering the Beef Shawarma and my mom ordered the Breakfast SaBouYa as a shawarma. The presentation very much looks like a stereotypical burrito cut in half, but the flavor explosion is something that surprised me so much. The hibiscus tea was amazing with a hint of cinnamon that added a unique twist. Will definitely have to make the journey to try other items on the extensive menu (which seems to not be fully updated on yelp). Mom approves.

Hibiscus tea, Afro salad with steak and shrimp, and calamari
    Sam B.

Chulla's was an unexpected treat!! Just looking for restaurants near me, Chulla's came up on my google search. The pics looked good so we went in for lunch. The Afro salad with steak and shrimp was so fresh and colorful. The clean calamari meat was so white and bright and had the yummy crunch that only some know how to master. And try the hibiscus tea. So worth every sip!!

    Breanna M.

Wow! We came here kind of randomly and I was so impressed. They are all super friendly and the food is absolutely delicious! It's so fresh!! I talked to some of the other customers as well and they were all long time customers and THAT says something about a place. I'll definitely be back Follow me on IG @yourrealtygirl Im always trying new places in Sacramento area.

    (12) Afro Wings-taking the rest home to snack on later
    tiana w.

Delicious!! My husband and I needed to past time and found this little gem. My husband ordered the Afro wings which he loved and I stole 2 from him because 1 wasn't enough. I ordered the spinach stew with beef. It was very reminiscent of a dish I would eat growing up. Served with rice and grilled veggies. Everything was so good we will be back to try some of the other dishes for sure. You definitely can't eat here without trying their hibiscus drink, which is very refreshing. Next time I will definitely need to get a smoothie. Thanks for the great food and service!!

Also if ANYONE working there talked with myself or my wife, they would be fired immediately! I shared with him that I had been joking & I stated that we would not do anything more. I was just JOKING. We then attempted to order a pizza and were told that pizzas could not be ordered until 10:30 a.m. At the time, it was only around 9:30 a.m. I decided to order the Peach & Prosciutto Flatbread appetizer instead, only to be told that couldn't be ordered either because it was made in the oven. None of this was communicated when we were first seated, nor was it noted on the menu. It makes little sense to open at 9:00 a.m. while offering guests a menu containing multiple items that aren't actually available for another hour and a half. Had this been clearly explained from the beginning, it would have saved a great deal of frustration. By this point, I was hot, irritated, and no longer interested in ordering food. Had we not already received our drinks, I likely would have left. The other members of our party ordered the $21 breakfast burrito and the $25 smoked prime rib sandwich. Both were extremely mediocre for the price. The burrito was wrapped in a corn tortilla rather than a flour tortilla, had already come unrolled, and quickly became a messy, difficult to eat disaster. The prime rib sandwich was served on very dry bread and lacked flavor. Neither dish justified the premium pricing. The dining environment was equally disappointing, there were flies everywhere. We spent much of the meal swatting flies away from our food and ourselves, making it nearly impossible to relax or enjoy the experience. Management should seriously consider addressing this issue with proper fly traps or Quikstrike. After our food arrived, our server never returned to check on us, ask how the meal was, or offer water refills. When the bill was finally brought out, we waited another 10+ minutes before he returned to process payment. By then, we simply wanted to leave. What was most noticeable was how many people were waiting for tables while service moved at an incredibly slow pace. Faster, more attentive service would have allowed tables to turn over more efficiently and reduced wait times for other guests. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had here. Between the poor communication, lack of attentiveness, unavailable menu items, mediocre food, uncomfortable dining conditions, and excessive wait times, the value simply isn't there anymore. We left feeling frustrated and disappointed. The service we received warranted a $0 tip, and for the first time, we're questioning whether we'll ever return.

I ordered the David's Breakfast Burrito - Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Potato, Green Onion, Pepper Jack In a grilled Flour Tortilla (I got mine with onions). It tastes like it's homemade. They use real potatoes instead of french fries. It's a solid breakfast sandwich. Just make sure to get hot sauce!!!!!

If you like crispy tater tots and heavy mayo-based sauces in your breakfast burrito, this one isn't for you. But if you just want a classic burrito with plenty of bacon, good melted cheese, perfect ratio of egg/meat/potato, get the David's wrap. Price was reasonable too. It's not the biggest burrito but not the smallest either. To be honest, I was a little turned off at first. Not because it was in a gas station (that actually gives me higher expectations), but because I asked for the burrito and was given one premade out of the warmer. Also, maybe I didn't look around very much, but I didn't see any salsa. When I got home and tried it though, it was pretty perfect. Tortilla maybe a little burnt, but besides that perfect. Luckily I had a good hot runny salsa at home which works perfect for breakfast burritos. I'll be back next time and ask if they have salsa though - that would push it to 5 stars (if the salsa is good I guess).
