This is my first time seeing a Katsu Chicken Moco. Katsu served like Loco Moco?! I've got the beeeeeeesst of both wooorlds... Although we chose to dine in, the food was served in to-go containers. It worked well at the end because I was able to easily take the leftovers home. My plate came with two scoops of steamed white rice, two eggs, mac salad, and steamed veggies. The mac salad was okay. It lacked a bit of flavor so I added some chili oil on top. My eggs were perfectly over easy. I broke the yolks over my rice and mixed it with the gravy making an extra decadent sauce. The musubis come two to an order and individually wrapped in plastic wrap. The rice to Spam ratio was good. My husband has no complaints. Each table has a set of sauces: Katsu Sauce, Soy Sauce, Sweet & Sour Sauce, and Teriyaki Sauce. I dipped my chicken in the katsu sauce. It was on the sweeter side, but still delicious. Pretty good Hawaiian spot in Roseville. We came here on a Friday night around 6pm. There were people eating at a table, people waiting for food, and several people in line in front of us. We ordered at the walk up and took a seat. The service to get the food was pretty slow. We did have to wait for a little bit for our food to come out to us. We ordered the Loco Moco with beef patties and the pick 2 plate with teriyaki chicken and katsu chicken. I liked my Loco Moco. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was flavorful. The gravy was really good and my over easy eggs were cooked perfectly. The Mac salad had a weird texture. Sort of stringy or something. My husband liked his teriyaki and katsu chicken. There were a few different types of sauces in bottles at the table, which was a nice touch. I do wish that since we ordered to eat there that the food didn't come in plastic to go containers and with plastic utensils. It was also on the pricey side. There was plenty of seating. I own a timeshare in Princeville on the island of Kauai. I been visiting there and Honolulu 3 times per year since the 1980's. I've eaten a LOT of hawaiian style food. Here at Sam'l they make and serve the tried and true Hawaiian staples that you find on all the islands. Plate lunch is the definition of a Hawaiian meal. Bambie and I ordered the #1 plate dinners. Boy it is a lot of food for $13. Generous portions of chicken, a few vegies, and the requisite 2 whites. 2 big scoops of white rice and a big scoop of really yummy macaroni salad. On offer also are pork plates, chicken and spam musubi. For less money than a Big Mac you will have a delicious meal made with good ingredients by hand from a family owned business. The sincerity shows and the food tastes like "Aloha". If you are a cheap eats connoisseur Sam'l is a must visit place to enjoy. The dining room ain't fancy. It's strip shopping center sterile and clean. There's no alcohol. The food is served tableside in take-away boxes. The fork and knife are plastic. Like i said, cheap eats, Of the highest caliber. Menu full of appetizing options [Roseville CA] I was so hungry then this caught my eye when leaving the Walmart|Sam's Club parking area. I was told they've been around for some 7 months in July 2025. Made a U-turn to check it out. Immediately greeted upon entering. This is a counter service restaurant. The menu included a mixture of Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, and Chinese influences. I wanted to try everything but I decided on the lemon pepper wings and spam musubi. The dining area was spacious and tables were really spaced from each other. I can only speak about the food since we did a take out order, but I can say that this is THE best Hawaiian BBQ I've had in many years. L&L doesn't come close, maybe the one in Oahu which is decent. We easily placed our order with the very nice lady. The restaurant is clean, spacious, & bright with tables & some bar seating. Island music plays in the background. The chairs are metal & loud against the cement floor, so best to lift them to move. Fountain drinks are self-serve, but refrigerated beverages are also available to purchase. Napkins, utensils, & hot oil were self-accessible. Each table had squeeze bottles of soy, sweet & sour, teriyaki, & katsu sauces. Our orders were brought to the table hot in to-go containers. We got to Sam L Hawaiian BBQ on Sunday morning around 10:55 and there was already a small line of people waiting, which was a good sign. They opened the doors a little early and started taking orders right away. The process was quick and smooth, and we found a table easily. Plenty of seating and the place was super clean, which you'd expect right after opening, but still nice to see. The staff was really friendly and welcoming, everyone had big smiles which made for a good first impression. I ordered the loco moco and my wife got the pick two with chicken katsu and galbi. The food came out fast, probably under 10 minutes, and the portions were huge. My loco moco had two big patties with lots of gravy. I asked for my eggs over medium but they came out over hard. Need that runny egg! The meat was pretty good, a little on the drier side, but the gravy was fire. The macaroni salad that came with it was solid, not amazing. It also came with 2 big scoops of rice and some veggies. The chicken katsu ended up being my favorite part -- big pieces of chicken, good crispy texture, really well done. The galbi had good flavor and wasn't too chewy, which can be hit or miss at some spots. My wife also had leftovers because of the generous portions. Overall, it was a good experience. Roseville needs a good Hawaiian spot and this might be it. We'll definitely be back to try more. read more

Tried this restaurant for the first time last week and I was very impressed! My new favorite place for Hawaiian bbq. The musubi was so flavorful! Getting that every time for sure. Also tried the lumpia which was average, and then I ordered the bbq plate. It came with chicken katsu, bbq chicken, and bbq beef. The katsu is so crispy and the bbq beef was very yummy! I love the sauce that comes on it. The Mac salad is a little boring and bland in my opinion. I'll probably just do rice next time. Great Kalbi Short Ribs! We used to pass this place when it was Roll-Em-Up Taquitos, on our way to Khan Mongolian BBQ a few doors down. TBH, couldn't figure out why someone would go to a restaurant to get taquitos. Then a few weeks ago, we noticed a sign for Sam'l. We didn't even realize the taquito place had closed lol. Pleasant, family-run business. Owner Sam runs it with his daughter, Mary. Huge menu. I got the bbq chicken and kalbi short ribs. Husband got the seafood and bbq chicken. We also tried their pork lumpia, spam musubi and potstickers. Lumpia was good, especially with their sweet and sour sauce. Not impressed with the potstickers. Tasted some of their ice creams (banana chocolate chip and mango calamansi) which weren't too bad. Reasonably priced at $5.50 each. I'd say their best dish is the kalbi short ribs. It was pretty amazing. The bbq chicken wasn't too bad either. They charge $1 extra if you opt for 2 mac, 1 rice like I usually do at L&L or Ono. Not worth it since the mac salad was kinda bland in my opinion. Rice wasn't very good either. Took quite a while to receive order. Would advise to call in the order if you don't have time to wait. Would go back for more kalbi short ribs and maybe husband to try one of their moco loco plates. Prices are reasonable, especially for Roseville. Many tables inside for dine-in also. Fantastic! We came on the first day they opened, and ordered the katsu and bbq combo so that we could try several menu items at once. Everything was delicious! The bbq beef was tender and flavorful, and the bbq chicken was juicy. The katsu chicken was well-fried and yummy. Friendly staff made sure we had the sauces at our table and described them to us. (Also, try the chili oil at the soda counter...I loved it on my rice!) The mac salad was also delicious. No words can describe how ecstatic we were to see Sam'L Hawaiian BBQ open after the devastation of our local Hawaiian spot having closed down recently. We've tried a couple of other spots in and around Roseville and "the craving," unfortunately, was not satisfied. To be honest, we tried Sam'L twice. First time was nothing special - pork wasn't savory and chicken was average. The second time, however... my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The cooks, or whatever changes they made between a 2-month time span, made a significant difference! Family meal - 3 meats (we ordered 2 pork and 1 beef). The beef was DELICIOUS! Saucy, savory, and even reminded me of a childhood spot long ago. The pork was GOOOOLDEN!! Moist (not dry like the first time), flavorful with every single bite, and reminded of us a spot we absolutely adored near Klamath Falls!! Family meal also comes with lots of rice and macaroni - every single item this round was absolutely incredible. Service is wonderful, plenty of seating, clean, warm and welcoming ambience, and plenty of parking out front. Best TIP? Call and order ahead of time if you plan to take out. Its been a while since I had a hawaiian bbq. I don't normally do this, but this time, I will compare this place to another Hawaiian BBQ place in the area: L & L. The price are very similar. I'm still used to paying under $15 for the Hawaiian BBQ plate, but it is what it is. Now the taste and flavor. The macaroni salad, and rice at L & L are better (The only reason why I did not give this place a 5-star). But the Kalbi, BBQ beef, and BBQ chicken are much better here. Maybe I'm a little biased because I love teriyaki, and their meat here have a strong teriyaki flavor. Another plus here is the serving size. I ordered the Hawaiian BBQ, which came with Kalbi ribs, BBQ beef, BBQ chicken, 2 scoops of rice, and 1 scoop of macaroni salad. I wasn't able to finish the plate and had to take some home. What a new, hidden gem! It was my first time here and I got our food to go. The inside was nice and clean. I was a couple of minutes early and my food was already bagged and on the counter. The bag was hot from the food. The food was great. It was still very warm by the time I got home. Each box was heavy and packed full. The BBQ chicken was moist and not dry like some places. The rice was fluffy and the Mac salad was very savory. The shrimp was crispy and light but not dry. The katsu chicken was also crispy, moist and not dry. The fish was the same way. Whatever or how ever they fry their food, it is really done well. I would def put this place over L&L and this will be our new place to go for great Hawaiian food. The pork had a good smokey flavor which most places don't seem to have, or they often taste like liquid smoke - this was one was good. The kalbi was really good -- not chewy - well marinated and tender. First off; it wasn't too bad, there were some pros and cons. We'd probably come back again so we can try the other dishes. Ordered the Family Meal (Feeds 3-4) to go and chose BBQ, Teriyaki Chicken, and Katsu Chicken. It was $47.99 (7-16-25). Everyone agrees the Katsu was good. Teriyaki Chicken was ok, really sweet, missing ginger & garlic. BBQ "Hawaiian" chicken, way too sweet, also missing ginger, garlic, & onion flavor which should be in the marinade. It came with six scoops of Mac Salad which was pretty good and six scoops of white rice. They also packed two Katsu sauces, 4 Teriyaki sauces, soy sauces, and utensil packages. I really wished the soy sauce was Aloha brand though. We also ordered a 1 Item Plate at $12.99, and chose Kalua Pork which added another $1. Overall is was pretty good and my favorite out of all the meats that we chose. Service was friendly and we received our order very quickly. Everything was packed nice and tight in a single large plastic bag. The restaurant itself; as soon as you walk in you are at the counter to order. To the left is the dining area which is a very good size. There's also a self-serve fridge to pick several varieties of Hawaiian Sun drinks. Past the dining area is a self-serve Drink Station and then a hallway to the restrooms. This place is new so of course it still looks nice. They have some Reggae music playing on the overhead speakers. Here are my critiques; As a Hawaiian restaurant I wish they had Lau Lau. So I was very excited to try this place after a long day of traveling, and my wife and I wanted some wings. I get down the road and we start to bite in and the wing after the bite started to smell like rotten meat . So then I took another sniff of the bone now that I've eaten half of this wing, and it smells God awful . And I did it to another one and the other one smelled bad as well, so at this point, I took a third wing and I opened it and it didn't smell bad, but that wasn't enough to convince me to continue eating them . ---- So I kindly called the restaurant, and I thoroughly explained what I just posted above, and I asked them for a refund, told them that I would be able to send them a picture that I didn't eat the wings, but I wanted a refund because of the case The lady on the phone basically took this as me calling all of their wings, rotten, and then went on explain to me that everyone else who bought wings did not complain today. I definitely understand that, but some people may be so hungry. They're just eating right past it, also I told the lady that I don't hold this against them, it could be their wing distributor, it could be a number of things, not saying that your wings are always rotten but in this particular instance, this is the case. She would not give me my refund and here we are. I wasted $25, feeling slightly nauseous and might have diarrhea in a few moments. But of the two wings that were tried, The flavor is a 6.8/10- it's a plain wing fried and then tossed and typical seasoning salt. Barbecue wings taste like typical fast food barbecue wings. Overall 6.8/10 Customer service : 5/10 I give customer service a five out of 10 because I truly don't believe the woman understood me properly and of course anyone will defend their business, but it would be nice for some understanding on the customer's side. read more
