Chulo was one of the places that offers dinner till 10:30pm, which was fairly late compared to most restaurants in the area. I got butter chicken and palak paneer (highly recommend), both were really good. They also come with a decent amount of rice (more than a typical Chinese takeout). I ordered take out, but it seemed to be very vibrant and happening inside, with live music and such. Would love to dine in the next time. read more

Another strong showing from Chulo. The daal tadka was a nice contrast with the richness of some of the other dishes, with lentils and curry leaf adding a nice clearer flavor to the dish. The Goat Kadai was tasty, mixing a bit of tanginess with the tenderness of the meat. There were a few fattier bits that would have been better not being there, but otherwise quite delicious. The whole wheat paratha was a nice alternative to the naan, with its use of whole wheat and crispiness that arises from the texture. The spinach potato (aloo panak) was nice and smooth, with the spinach mixing into the texture of the soft potato very nicely. The mixed vegetable curry contained some cauliflower, peas, and broccoli, and each vegetable maintained crispy integrity. Excellent meal overall!!! read more

I have been there three times. They have great food, good service and a very nice ambience, plus you don't find food with Himalayan flavor in too many places in metro Boston. Been going here for a few years. Recently Chulo has did a minor remodel to the interior and is updating the atmosphere with lighting, better music and staff. The Good: +Food is excellent. (Marsalas, naans, saags) +drinks are very good (dirty mango lassi, mai tai, etc. ) +service is excellent and personable (Gandeep!) +plenty of parking in their lot and some on street parking. +clean and organized establishment. The Bad: -portions are much smaller than in the past with prices increased a bit. -there is a very outgoing staff/musician member that is super friendly to the point of bordering on intrusive during your meal. I am saddened on the recent change in portions and pricing. Hesitant to go back when there are other excellent Nepalese-Indian cuisine establishments in the local area with larger portions for the same price point or lower. read more

Let me just say this was genuine Nepalese cuisine! We were coming around 8 PM so I think we were like the last people to leave the restaurant. The ambience was very warm and they had live music. It looks like a great space to a celebration party or any other birthday gathering. It looks like they do a lot of dine in orders. Tried this place for the first time. Have to give them 5 stars for the service and flavors. We ordered pick up and it was ready extremely fast, and they were so friendly. The momos were a different shape than I expected- they were potsticker shapes. You definitely have to try the spicy chili chicken ones. They're addicting in that slightly tangy spicy sauce. Chulo Restaurant & Bar had a discount coupon on Grubhub, so I decided to give it a shot, and I wasn't disappointed. The food was great and at an incredibly affordable price. Even though I am typically a meat lover, I decided to go with the vegetarian version of the Royal Chulo Khaja Set for $15.99 (I think chicken was $1 extra). Royal Chulo Khaja Set (Veg) - I'm not positive what came with this set and what was extra/side things that are included, but the $15.99 order came with 4 tupperwares of dishes and 3 smaller containers with sides. I'll do my best to describe the different components: Vegetable curry - this container was jam packed and almost bursting. It had some cauliflower, peas, carrots, and maybe potatoes? Possibly also some broccoli, but all of the vegetables were soft and absorbed the mild curry very well. There was a lot of flavor here, and I probably only ate half of the contained because there were so many other dishes. Aloo tama soup - this had black eyed peas in it and was absolutely delicious. The soup was thin but still packed with flavor. It went extremely well with the flattened/beaten rice. Beaten rice - I love this and actually buy it at the market a lot to have at home. Each gran of rice is flattened and dried/fried to be extremely crispy. It has a great texture and takes on the flavor of whatever you mix it with - in this case, the aloo tama soup and the vegetable curry were great candidates. Black chickpea curry - this was also another tasty curry that came in one of the larger tupperware dishes. It was a pretty standard chickpea dish, but it was a bit on the spicy side for me. Still, it was a nice addition to the massive amounts of food that the platter already contained. Basic salad - this was in a small container and had raw cucumber, red onion, and carrot. It was a bit strange to have with no sauce, but it was a nice and refreshing break from the spicier curries. Roasted soybeans and peanuts - I had never had this before but it was STRONG. It had a wasabi/horseradish flavor to it, and it was rather spicy. Still, it offered a nice crunch and was tasty as long as I didn't have a big bite of it on its own. It was a nice addition to the other dishes, and the crunch went well with the crunch from the flattened rice. Aachar - last was this mixed pickled veggie paste. I'm not sure if that's actually what it is, but it's what it tasted like, and it had a nice acidic flavor to it to balance out some of the richer curries. Really, everything went together tremendously well, and there was an incredible amount of value for $15.99. I do wish there was some rice included apart from the flattened rice, because after I finished that, I still had a bunch of sides and curries leftover. I ended up making my own rice and flatbread to soak up the remainder of the dishes, but just the fact that I had so much leftover after eating the included flattened rice is a benefit. The last bit of feedback was that I did order the least spicy option, but some of the dishes were still rather spicy. Still, the flavor was full and delicious - 4/5 stars! read more

Three of us ate at Chulo for a weekeday lunch. We are still careful about covid and were happy to sit in a booth away from everyone else. They still have outdoor seating in the parking lot, but we did not need it. We had veg samosa which we all liked. Our friend had Kawati soup which seemed spicy, but she finshed it. We had chicken korma (good), tandoori tikka (great). The Veg Khaja Set (which is alike a bento box) was interesting, probably the most unusual items including a kind of crunchy rice (I was offered chance to have regular rice, but I wanted to be adventurous). I am glad I sampled it. The gentleman who took care of us was very attentive and reflected well on the business. I drive by this place all the time...like several times per week. I've always wanted to try it and I finally did it. I ordered via Yelp for pickup. There are several parking spaces right up front on the street, but they also have a lot around back. The restaurant looks pretty nice inside. There were no customers at all in the dining room. I was greeted upon entering and everyone seemed pretty friendly. There was also a ad for live music on specific nights...if you're into that kind of thing. There is a large bar inside, too. As for the food, I would give it 2.5/5. I ordered the steamed and fried chicken momos/dumplings and I can't say I was impressed. I'm a big dumpling guys, mostly with chinese types of dumplings. However, I also frequent popular momo places like momo n curry and tasty momo in cambridge/somerville. I really wanted to love these momos from Chulo as this place is more convenient for me. Then the chicken chow mein came out and that was exciting. I wasn't sure about chow mein here at first but oh man it was the thing to get! Then the naan came out. We got the regilar and garlic naans. Then we each got chicken tikka masala. The curries usually comes with rice so if you want naan you have to order separately. We then got the kothey momos. Oh my gosh...what a table full of food. All were very good. My eyes are definitely bigger than my belly. If you're trying to keep to an appropriate portion, I'd either go curry, naan and maybe the momo or chow mein. The appetizers came out fast and although I was not entirely in a mood to order anything Indian I did end up getting the Daal Makhani. It pains me to see reddish Dal Makhani getting served which also has cream in it. I wish I can return just by looking at it that it's soooooo WRONG to put cream in it. 1.5 star taken out for otherwise tasty Nepali food. The Kwati Soup was awesome and is a perfect comfort food to have esp when the weather is a bit chilly. The thali was great with all the items being tasty (the dal was what i thought will be served when I ordered dal makhani - maybe I got overly excited and then got disappointed.) The best Indian food! My daughter was raving about this restaurant so we finally gave it a try on our visit to Waltham last night. She did not exaggerate. Everything was delicious from the Chicken tikka Masala to the Palak Paneer. The highlight for me was the Lamb Vindaloo. We got everything medium spicy and the rice and naan were enough to cut the kick! Everyone was friendly and attentive and the addition of live music was a nice surprise . Took a chance to try out something new and was definitely impressed with Chulo! We ordered delivery and got garlic naan, chicken biriyani, chicken momos, Veg kothey momo, lamb sekuwa, samosas, and gulab jamun. Everything was packed nicely and we got lots of sauces to accompany our meal. The momos were great, a classic dumpling that you can't go wrong with. The lamb was flavorful and tender, and not dry! It went great with the white, creamy, yogurt sauce. The garlic naan was good and seasoned well, slightly burnt on one side. The chicken biriyani has got LOTS of spices. I had no idea what I was eating, so every so often I would get a bite of some spice, which I spit out, but the flavor was worth it. We got medium spice and at first, it doesn't seem too spicy, but the spice adds up and leaves an after-burn sensation in your mouth. The only thing I DO NOT recommend is the gulab jamun. The description describes it as a fluffy milk puff or flourless doughnut, but the flavor and texture are awful. Maybe it's the cardamom spice or the mushy puff, but the smell isn't appealing which also doesn't help the taste of this. Overall, great food and I'd be willing to order from Chulo again in the future! read more

Came here for dinner the other night and the food, service and atmosphere was great. Nik and I tried the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, Garlic Naan and a side of yogurt sauce. They were all super flavorful and delicious. I personally liked the vindaloo more because I like things spicy, but the tikka masala paired well to balance the heat. The garlic naan was perfect for soaking up the sauces. It also looks like they have live music some nights so I would totally come back to check that out! read more

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in January 2022. I had this restaurant bookmarked for over 2 years and finally I got a chance to experience it this year. Nepali food was the sole reason I wanted to check it out. We were a group of 3 who found plenty of parking, right by the restaurant (It isn't street parking). Similar to the parking scene, we found plenty of open tables at the restaurant. There was literally just one other group dining over there. Cheap beers (4$ Carlsberg & 6.5$ Tiger) and unique dishes that I've not seen at any other Nepali restaurants around Boston. We tried Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Fried Rice, Chili Mo Mo Chicken, Lamb Sekuwa, Chicken Khaja Set. I think the Khaja set is a great pairing dish with any beer, I'd recommend it. read more

My family and I were in Boston for a short vacation, and found this gem of a Nepalese restaurant. The temperatures in Boston was really low and after walking around the Boston downtown all day, we wanted to eat something really good and this place was perfect. The place is a little outside Boston downtown, about 7 miles but the drive is worth. We were a party of 10 people including three hyperactive kids. We had not made reservations, but they were able to accommodate us. The service was great, all the staff were nice and polite. We went there on Saturday evening, and looks like they have a very busy weekend because the entire place was full and there were people waiting to get the table. We were glad we arrived when we did. They have live music on Friday and Saturday. The band played pretty good, they sang Nepali, English and Hindi songs. Now about the food, let me start by saying everything was delicious!! Momos - we tried all steam, kothey and chilly in veg and chicken and all of it was great! The kids had chicken wings and they seemed very happy! Veg chowmain was great and so was the vegetarian thali. Aaloo bodi tama soup was perfect for the cold day like that. We also had chicken khaja set and chicken sekua , both were delicious. This place is so delicious and the staff are great! My boyfriend and I came on a Thursday night in hopes that it wasn't too crowded. There were only a handful of other people in the restaurant, which meant that the staff were super quick! We were seated promptly & within 5 minutes we knew what we wanted and ordered. The atmosphere was very relaxed. There are some TVs on the wall and a decent sized bar. Booths surround the outer edges of the single room and tables fill the center. It's small, but not stuffy. Our booth was actually way too big for just the 2 of us! For an app we got the vegetarian samosas. For entrees, spicy butter chicken & spicy lamb tikka masala, which both came with sides of jasmine rice! We also ordered garlic naan. Samosas- 10/10 These were MASSIVE and so DELICIOUS! Honestly if you ordered just these and another app, you'd be full. The sauces that came with them were amazing. Butter chicken- 9/10 wow, so tender and literally melt in your mouth. The tomato sauce is such a nice balance of flavors & acid, I just wish it was a spicier but that's just personal preference. Next time I'll ask them to do extraaa spicy!! Lamb Tikka Masala- 9/10 the sauce was out of this world!! The perfect amount of heat too. Personally I think I'd like this better with chicken, but my boyfriend loved it. What an all-around delight to eat at Chulo. Neither my wife nor I drink, so I can't speak to the bar, but our experience was top-notch. We were making a short visit to the Waltham area from central Maine, and were looking for some good Indian or Nepalese food. The owner waited on us and made our evening a special one. As it was our first time at his restaurant, we put ourselves in his hands and followed his recommendations. We feasted on Chicken Steamed MoMo, Garlic Naan, Kottayam Fish Curry, Hyderabadi Baghaar-e-Baigain and refreshed ourselves with Mango Laahsis. Every bite was a delight - bursting with complex and well-balanced flavors. It was abundantly clear that the food was made with care and love. The service was superb, and it looked like everyone else was having and equally good experience. We enjoyed the ambience - comfortable, and able to hear each other talk. Even though we make monthly trips to the area and love to try out different restaurants, we will definitely be returning to Chulo - in fact, my wife and her sister will eat there tomorrow. read more

While visiting Boston, we decided to look for places with vegan options for me. This restaurant has quite a few vegan dishes and options, and it's Nepali and Indian cuisine. The staff/server was friendly and helpful, the service was fast. We ordered two vegan appetizers, the Veg samosa and the Mixed veg pakora. For the entree I shared the Dal Tadka (Vegan) and the Tandoori Roti (Vegan). The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the mild version of Dal Tadka because I don't like spicy. The samosa is a bit spicy but everyone tasted and loved them. All the food tasted so fresh. I will definitely try to come back before I leave and definitely recommend. read more

Entering Chulo reminded me of some of the halfway-posh restaurants I've visited in South Delhi. It's tucked away on a second floor with some hastily printed direction signs pointing towards it, but once inside, the restaurant is spacious and dimly lit, complete with a TV showing a video of a fireplace. I imagine it gets more crowded on the weekends when there's live music, but we came on a Wednesday. I've never had proper Nepali cuisine before, but the flavor profile of the curries was fairly familiar. We started with the veg khana set, which had a variety of warm and cold appetisers accompanied by beaten rice (closely resembling miniature corn flakes). The soup and dried chickpeas were really fragrant and unique, tasting more like some Thai salads I've tasted, whereas the cold aloo sadeko was just OK (tasted like dum aloo). The main veg thali we ordered with aloo gobhi had seasoning almost like some Bihari versions and was very good. The ghee to top the rice was a nice touch, and the daal was hearty. Only thing I will skip next time was the so-called "Himalayan old fashioned". Just tasted like an old fashioned that was light on whisky. read more
