Fun place to try some authentic Nepali or Indian cuisine. The waitress gave of lots of helpful recommendations. My entire family was obsessed with their fusion chow mein - the spices they used to jazz it up were amazing and the noodles were the perfect texture. The tandoori chicken and Lamb bhanchha entree set were also stand outs. Loved that I could try some specialty Nepali dishes that I've never seen on a menu before - like the red beaten rice (I won't order it again but fun to try). As a South Indian man living away from his mother, I'm always looking for comfort Indian food. I've been in Boston for about 8 years and I definitely have my top 10 Indian food spots. Chulo has sneaked its way into this list over the course of several visits. I haven't seen that many South Indian cuisines represented well, other than the obvious dosa spots. Chulo is a delicious and delightful find in Watertown. It's a discreetly hidden, 2nd floor walk up Nepalese restaurant. Up front they have a bar with a stage area for a band. The back is a small dining area. They were playing live Nepalese music on a Saturday evening (website says live music on Mon, Fri, Sat). The restaurant is colorfully decorated with prayer flags and various religious art. Recs: Go for their currys and momos (dumplings)! (+) Lamb curry is similar in taste to Indian curry. Comes with basmati rice and 2 pickled sides. (+)Momo's are very generous in their portion size. It's enough to be an entree to be shared between 2 people. Spicy fans should go for their chili chicken momo. Pass: (-) Chicken Bhanchha set. Because it was listed under the "royal chula bhanchha set," it sounded fancy and we wanted to try something different. Most of the sides were originally cold and we were not a fan of the "beaten rice." Little did we know that beaten rice is very similar to eating dried grains/oatmeal. Admittedly we took a gamble by ordering something we had no idea about. To each their own! Overall, Churo is a fun place to dine if you're looking for something ethnic and different. First time I've had Nepalese food. Delicious. Great service. They had a live band too. Food consisted of sort of an Indian, Asian, Greek fusion feeling. Curry, lamb, chicken, rice, dumplings, etc The chicken momos were so good. They really resemble chicken dumplings, but the dipping sauces are a hot chili and also a chutney. Fairly decent interiors and ok food, the live music on their webpage was what drew us in. Food was ok, nothing special. We odered the Chicken dumplings which was good, chicken chowmein and lamb curry with rice was ok. Listening to the live music with old hindi and nepali songs was nostalgic. It was less crowded for a Friday night dinner, so we had a good time listening to old hindi songs from the 80-90's. They also took song requests...which was nice. After looking at the reviews on here I decided to come with a friend, and it definitely did not disappoint. The servers were friendly, and the food came out quickly. For starters, we split the Chicken Chili Momo. It had just the right amount of spice on it where it was hot but we could still enjoy it, which we did. For my entree I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with some Garlic Naan on the side. The naan itself was delicious. The Chicken Tikka Masala was flavorful, and came in a healthy portion size. I liked the decor a lot. The place was very neat and seemed inviting. The waitstaff are really nice but there was a lot to be desired about my experience particularly. (I went there on a Tuesday at 4PM). They just weren't that attentive. The food was ok but could have been more flavorful. I asked it to be spicy (the hottest option) and they didn't put enough spice in it. (I'm Asian). The portion sizes were kind of small too. My friend and I had an excellent experience here. The people who served us were Nepalese and were so, so nice. Our server from Kathmandu explained what the native dishes on the menu were and made recommendations. We wound up ordering the chicken Bhanchha set and Aloo Kauli. Both were fantastic. (I'm devouring the Aloo leftovers right now as I write this.) We also had the samosas and chicken momos to start with, which were very tasty. In addition, we sampled some of their very potent drinks.... I'm always happy to encounter those. :) As I mentioned before, a big part of what we enjoyed were the super nice people there. I tried Chulo for the first time today. I ordered the Mix Vegetable Masala ($15), and supposedly it comes in three level of heat. I love spicy so ordered the Hot Spicy option. The dish is very tasty, with everything cooked nicely, but I'm very disappointed with the heat level. When I see three levels, I expect top-notch spicy. This is barely spicy at all. I had to hit it with some sambal olek to fire it up. It's not a deal killer, but I wanted to point it out. I didn't know what Red Beaten Rice is, so I got a side order of that ($2.50). Turns out it's dry, crunchy, flat rice. It'll be good on a salad. The food's good, and I'll probably try other things from the menu. I will say that the portion isn't terrific. The photo shows what $20 got me. There's way too much rice in proportion to the masala, and I"m still hungry after having finished the main dish. read more

My student population has multiple disabilities and requires sensory support (consideration for bright lights, noise, wheelchair access, etc) in new places. The owner was incredibly accommodating for what our students may need, offered menu recommendations, and worked with our budget to make our field trip happen. We ordered: -Samosas, standard and satisfying -Veggie momos, actually didn't like these, the ginger was overpowering in a bad way and didn't taste cooked -Black dahl, pretty good, my friend who grew up with her mother's Indian cooking said this was her favorite -A red paneer curry, my favorite, super flavorful -Garlic naan, standard and satisfying We also had a cosmo, a mai Thai, a margarita, and a mango ginger martini - all not bad but really not that great and based in premade mixes. The prices were good. They also had like traditional music and the restaurant got a little rowdy, which was fun. Best momos I've had in the Boston area! My favorite were the pan fried ones (although I loved them all). The panner and the Tawa roti were also phenomenal! Very fresh and almost melts in the mouth. This is a wonderful restaurant! We just found the restaurant and have been twice in 3 weeks (and we were away for 2 of the weeks!). The food is fresh and delicious. The service is excellent. Special care is given. The wait staff is excellent and the owner is on the premises and lovely. Indoor and outdoor service. They have live music on some nights. Check it out. The shrimp tikka was delicious! Spiced and cooked to perfection. The saag was flavorful and the chicken wings were good too. The Mai Tai's are fun and the care received as a customer is stellar. Came here on a Thursday night and the place was completely empty, so that was a bit awkward. I wanted to try the indo-chinese, so we got the chicken chili and chow mein, and then tacked on some lamb curry for good measure. I'm glad we got the lamb! I found this place here on Yelp! I was looking for something new to try & within walking distance. I treated myself to lunch & got the following: Food: (all pictured here) Chicken Mo:Mo Butter Chicken Garlic Nan Rice pudding (dessert) Drinks: Mango Lassi Chulo Cosmo I was stuck between the Chicken Tikki Masala & the Butter Chicken but Anil (my waiter), was helpful with his suggestions/recommendations. He even recommended a drink that wasn't on the drink menu yet! I went for it and it was phenomenal! Overall, Anil was very attentive and kind. The flavor in all dishes were great. You can choose your spice level which I loved and it came out nice & hot. They do live music on Wednesday's & a few other days throughout the week. Plenty of seating, I was surprised that it was empty but it was a great experience overall. They opened right when the pandemic hit so they do take out mainly. Ahh, Chulo! Thank you for serving us delicious food, time and again. This review is long overdue. Every time I decide to sit and write this review, I think of the food and I'm off to have it. Food-wise, EVERYTHING we've tried has been a big hit. The royal khaja set comes with chicken choila and different veggies. Every single item is unique and has a distinct flavor (some can be spicy too). The only thing we probably didn't enjoy so much was the beaten rice. It can be slightly tough to chew. Through the khaja set, we discovered the badaam sadeko. It is a "salad" (quotes because it is not your typical salad with greens) with peanuts, so crunchy and the lime dressing is tangy and tasty. Now coming to the star of the show - the chicken momos! Oh wow - that chicken is seasoned well. The outer momo covering is paper thin which means it does not overpower the dish. You get two dipping sauces - both complement the momos. We've also tried the veggie momos. They're not supposed to be spicy but sometimes they can be - I believe they put minced chilies in the veggie mix. And finally a masala chai. It might not be on their menu but chai with those succulent momos is a good combination. Another app, aloo sadeko, while tasty is a cold app (the menu does not indicate it's cold). It was so cold that there was a small piece of ice in it. I do love the masala of the app, wish they served it hot or at least at room temperature. The ambiance is always peaceful and relaxing including the artwork on the walls. Some nights they also have live music. The service is attentive and always with a smile. The food comes out quick. How does it get any better than this? :) Chulo is on the second floor of a building and does not have a large board outside advertising its location. It may be a little hard to notice but it's definitely there! And you'll be glad you went. read more

Wow wow wow!! What can I say, I saw this restaurant advertised on my local "Watertown Nextdoor site" and I am sure glad I took the time to stop in and order a takeout. Being British I'd like to think I'm abit of a Curry connoisseur as Ive has many hundreds of dishes over the years. I ordered a Chefs special Salad with the Chicken Tikka as a starter which was delicious, for my entree I had a lamb tikka Marsala with basmati rice and a plain nan bread, the flavors were amazing and the dish was not at all greasy or oily which is often the case I've found. The server was very pleasant and greeted me very jovially and the meal was very good value for money, A little over $30 for the appetizer, entree and the side of nan. I will definately be coming back again soon, next time I may even try sitting at their Patio space outside. Well done and keep up the great work! read more
