Chuparosa is a true hidden gem. We almost hesitate to share this review because part of us wants to keep it all to ourselves. That said, the owner, Andy, was so gracious and welcoming that we genuinely want to see him succeed; it feels only right to spread the word. The experience was fantastic from start to finish. We left with two bottles of wine--despite usually preferring reds, we couldn't pass up both the Albarino and the Sangiovese. One tip: double-check your route on Google Maps before heading over. We been to Chuparosa several times over the past 5 years and have always enjoyed our experiences. The tasting room is situated on a hillside overlooking their vineyard. There's a small, but comfortable area inside by a stone fireplace, as well as a nice deck in front offering the wonderful views of the vineyards and surrounding hills. They even have a cave, however it's not open to the public (at least as of our last visit). WINES: Andy (owner/winemaker) poured for us and provides good service and nice insight on his wines and vineyard. One tasting fee is waived with one bottle purchase, as Andy's motto is "We want to sell wines, not tastings". Chuparosa offers mostly Italian, French, and some Spanish varietals (Albariño, Grenache Gris, Mourvèdre/Grenache Rosè, Sangiovese, Cab Franc, and Zinfandel) and in my opinion they're all well-made, elegant wines, some of the best in the region. These two hard working host serve all estate wines and even homemade sourdough bread, with estate made olive oil. Each wine from the whites to the reds to the ports are excellent and unique. It is rare that I visit a winery twice - and Chuparosa is one of my favorites in the Ramona valley area because of its affordability, and their wines are delicious! I came here a couple years ago for the first time, and a second time sometime last month. Surprisingly, not much has changed in terms of pricing and quality. It's $10 for a tasting, and you get about 7 wines if I am remembering correctly. 8, if you want to try their port. This winery is also one of very few that will credit your tastings toward a bottle, which is pretty worth it because their bottles are reasonably priced. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. I love how low-key and small this winery is. It's so quiet out on the patio, and you could hear the birds chirping. They don't have food, but you are welcome to bring your own. Plenty of parking. I'm already looking forward to my next visit! read more

This place is a hidden gem, I'm glad I tried it out. As you are trying the wine here, please try the bread with olive oil. I was advised that the bread and wine were made in-house. The owner is very courteous, knowledgeable, and very quick to pour wine when you come in. I tasted a wide variety of wine and ended up leaving with a bottle. Went there today and honestly I wished I lived around Ramona because this is definitely a place I'd love to bring my friends around to. Very family friendly and the tasting room is super cozy and honestly the wines are really good. I wish I had gotten the names of the couple who owned this place but the service was very friendly and they also give you taster of their olive oil. Over it was one of the best tastings I've had and gave me very Sonoma vibe without the pricing. Tasting is not $10 and I cannot say this enough but the estate wines are really good. A group of us visited Chuparosa on a Sunday afternoon and we had a great time. It has a small outdoor patio that has one large table for 6 and about three small tables for 2-4. There's more seating inside too. There's a beautiful view of their vineyard and Olive trees. Wine tasting was very affordable at $10 to taste all their wines. The owner Andy came right outside when we arrived to welcome us. If you buy a bottle of wine, the $10 goes towards the cost. Most of us left with at least one bottle of wine that day as their wines were really good! I like their Albarino, Sangiovese and their zinxzin port. No food but you can bring your own. read more

We were at Chuparosa vineyard as part of group meet. The owner Andy spoke to us about his vineyard and the varietals grown on site. Tasted the wines afterwards, whites, rose, reds, and ports. All were excellent and lovingly crafted. They do buy grapes from near their vineyard as well. My husband and I came here for some wine after a long hike and enjoyed our experience very much! Andy the owner greeted us promptly upon arriving and we both selected to do the wine tasting which is extremely reasonable! We tasted some of the most aromatic wines we have ever had and Andy walked us through each flavor profile and it's origin. The Malbec was my favorite here. This place is cool they offer complimentary freshly made sourdough with olive oil dipping sauce. The place itself is cute with limited indoor seating, but also more outdoor seating. Looks to be animal friendly. The gentlemen serving us was who I think was the owner & their wines are locally grown. Nice home style type of place. Chuparosa means hummingbird... This is another great hidden gem in Ramona wine country... you have to go down some farm roads past the chickens and sheep ranches which is awesome... Take a right at the horse ranch and up a little road... For $10 you get about 9 tastings... Several whites and 5 or 6 reds... The owners are really nice. They make their own olive oil and sourdough bread... Samples are provided. The oil is something else, not what you'd get at Costco. It's very fresh and fragrant. Yesterday we went to Chuparosa for the second time and it was another great experience! We'd already been there before so rather than doing tastings, my husband just ordered a glass of their Zin and it was yummy yummy yummy! He immediately decided he was going to buy a bottle this time, too. I am usually the DD and I only take sips, but even I can tell Chuparosa wines are so very special. And going there is an *experience*. Andy & Carolyn are really knowledgeable about their craft and share this with their guests. This is one of the more low-key tasting rooms and you feel like some folks have just opened up their home to have you come and learn about and enjoy their hobbies! A big plus: the location is quite convenient for our "down the hill" friends ... it's only 10 minutes off Hwy 67 at Highland Valley/Dye Rd. Still very much country, but much gentler curves than some of the other wineries in the winding roads of NE Ramona. P.S. Hands down THE BEST wine in Ramona. In fact, my husband and I have traveled the world tasting wine and it is some of the best we've ever had. The winemaker truly understands what he is doing. I love how he pours and then describes each wine and what makes it unique. He and his wife are great conversationalists and are excellent to their customers. I love going and cozying up next to the specially engineered fireplace in the tasting room in a cold rainy day and sitting on the charming patio in the spring and summer. We love that we can bring our own charcuterie tray and snack while we taste. We never leave without at least a few bottles to take home. Bottle prices are reasonable too. Much less than most Temecula or Napa bottles but just as delicious. Don't miss this Gem!!! read more

Had a lovely visit to Chuparosa Vineyards on our drive back from hiking Cedar Creek Falls. My girlfriends and I stopped here after reading the other reviews on Yelp, and I'm so glad we did. Pulling up, you're almost thinking...am I driving up to someone's house? We parked in the "lot" and grabbed a table on the deck, there were about 4 or 5 tables out on the deck, all with umbrellas, and as soon as we sat down the man who worked there helped us adjust the position of the table and umbrella to avoid the sun. He brought us each a taster before we decided on a bottle of the white, very refreshing after a day of hiking! And just as we were about to eat our own arms off, he let us know there was freshly baked bread inside. The bread was in these littler personal sized wrappings, and was delicious! We lounged, sipped wine, nibbled on the bread and enjoyed the view, it was perfect. read more

We were referred to this winery for their good Zins, and it definitely did not disappoint! In fact, all of their wines were good, and very reasonably priced. We ended up buying their 2011 Zin. The lady pouring the wine (I believe she was the owner) was extremely friendly and able to tend to all the customers on her own in a timely manner. She was actually quite impressive! What an amazing place! It's rare to find such a serene setting with amazing wines and even more amazing people. The wines are all grown either in the estate or in Ramona, and my goodness the boldness of these wines are fantastic! Our favorites were the Zin and the Cab Franc, but you can't go wrong with any of them! We brought our giant pupper who was very well taken care of there, as well as some charcuterie which we enjoyed with a glass on their beautiful patio with lovely views of the mountains. If you buy a bottle the tasting is free, so why not be economical and buy 2 LOL! Definitely come by this lovely winery next time you're up for a little escape into the country, SD wine country that is! We will definitely be back and bring our loved ones here too! read more

Hands down, one of the best wineries in Ramona! It can be a little hard to find but their wines are worth it! You can bring a picnic and sit outside at one of their tables and enjoy a tasting, a glass or a bottle! We were visiting our daughter and her boyfriend in San Diego and as wine lovers decided to seek out some new wineries. I liked reading that Chuparosa's wines are estate grown and represent the area. As such, the only white is the Alberino, but that was fine with us red wine lovers. And, the Alberino is great. In small wineries like this you are tasting with the winemaker and don't have a bachelorette party bus in the parking lot. Just good wine and nice people. What a lovely surprise in Ramona! We're so spoiled with California wines from NorCal to Paso to Santa Barbara but I was not looking forward to a Ramona winery until dear friends highly recommended Chuparosa. I was so happy to taste their estate grown wines, especially the Albariño, which I haven't seen in very many wineries. We enjoyed all the reds and also enjoyed talking with Andy, the owner and winemaker. Looking at the view, you'd think you were in Tuscany. By the way, his Sangiovese is delicious and so is the SuperTuscan. We'll be back here and bring friends next time to enjoy the cozy seats and wonderful wines. read more

This is our second time visiting...and we loved it as much as our first time! Our faves are the Albariño and their Zin. Although all of the others we tasted were quite good as well. Our first visit was last winter and we enjoyed being served inside the small but cozy tasting room. This time we came on an early summer day...about mid 80s and yet we managed to sit out on the patio (most of us were able to be in the shade). Another large cantilever umbrella would help provide more shade for future large groups. Overall, Andy and Carolyn were very attentive to our large group and were great at sharing about their property and their wines with us. We definitely will be back! read more

This is my favorite Ramona winery. The owners take time explaining their wines and you can tell a lot of love and knowledge goes into the making. They have an awesome zinfandel and sangioviese. I'll confess that my expectations were low as we turned onto a dirt road & approached what looked like someone's house. But scepticism melted away once we began talking with the owner & took our first sip of a hearty zinfandel (followed by 5 more equally hearty reds). His knowledge comes from tinkering in chemistry at UCSB & all grapes used are grown on his property (apparently not common in Ramona valley). A bonus was sourdough bread baked by the vintner's wife dipped in olive oil from a ranch down the Gem Lane. What a pleasant surprise our Chuparosa experience was! read more

We arrived in Ramona on a RAINY day. What drought? Bah. Thankfully, the following day we were treated to sunshine and warm weather. While awaiting the nuptials of our friends, me and the wonderful Jonathan D. took a lovely drive through the countryside after attending the Ramona Rodeo Days parade (a truly hilarious event, btw). Along the way we stumbled upon Chuparosa Winery and its owner, Andy. We pulled into the driveway and settled into Chuparosa's tasting room, at which time Andy talked us through each of his [amazing] wines. Seriously. I never met a Rosé I ever liked...until now. Andy explained the entire backstory behind rosé wine and why many people don't like it and/or haven't been exposed to this different kind. In addition to the rosé we tried several more all to the tune of a cool $5 bill. The atmosphere at Chuparosa is warm and inviting - especially after a few tastings. Congratulations to Andy on producing such extraordinary wines and making a great career of it (in ADDITION to his accomplished career as a rocket engineer!) Can't wait to return. read more
