There was a time when Church's was the place to go for chicken. The chicken and sides were always hot, fresh, and tasty. But most of all..AFFORDABLE! That is no longer the case. The cost for a simple family meal should not be equal to multiple utility payments. Also, the customer service is lacking. We were treated as if it was our privilege to dine and not the other way around. Because we utilized the drive-through, I can't comment on the ambience. I don't usually review fast food locations but Church's in Wilmington deserves a shout out. We have been several times and each time the service has been super friendly, the food has been fresh and hot and those biscuits are additive. It looks like they are rebranding to Church's Texas Chicken. Like Texas, everything is bigger here. We got a 16 piece family tender pack. A lot of food for amazing value. I love fried okra and they have the best. I also tried the jalepeno poppers yesterday and they were good too. They are renovating and the outside looks great. The inside is not yet open. We ate a late lunch here today and dined in. The service and food was awesome....the lady at the register, her name is Pandora, was speedy and was very nice. After we ordered we sat down and then saw they brought food out to the customers who were sitting at the table. Pandora was hustling as she took our order and then brought out to us. She even checked with every diner eating in if they needed anything. The food was sooooo good. The chicken was awesome as were the mashed potatoes and gravy and the biscuits. Ok...i m in Wilmington for a training this week and there is no Church's in my home town. Seeing all the reviews on line I wanted to try the chicken sandwich. I order it along with the 3 piece combo. I got extra sides just to be a big back and to test things out. The 3 stars is Mainly for the chicken sandwich. It was served as a flat piece of kindergarten chicken patty with mayo and pickles. It was nothing like the viral videos or the picture on the wall. The young lady informed me that that is how the sandwich is being sold now. OK - we do not have a a Popeyes in Wilmington so after sifting through many chicken sandwich reviews online the verdict was that CC has a chicken sandwich that rivals Popeyes, and let me just say it did not disappoint! Juicy, crunchy, extra pickles *check* and a surprisingly slightly sweet bun. Note: This is also the only place I can get fried gizzards too. I'm not even sure where to begin with this review other than I was blindsided with something extraordinary...phenomenal service and food from a fast food chicken place. It had been easily, 15 years since I've had Church's Chicken and since our son is a fried chicken fanatic, I figured it was time for him to try it out. FOOD: 10 Pc Family Meal with 6 Biscuits, Mac & Cheese, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and a large side of okra. The chicken was large, wonderfully fried, piping hot, juicy and delicious! They even included every type of sauce and condiment possible for us to enjoy. Simply awesome! Our son devoured the entire large mashed potatoes with gravy, I ate the entire thing of okra (wonderful, I might add) and there was only 1 piece of chicken left after all was said and done. The Church's recipe still isn't my favorite (I still prefer Popeye's over all others) but this meal kicked some ass. Nice. SCORE: 5 STARS!! SERVICE: I've lost my receipt and cannot remember the name of the gentleman who took my order and provided my service to me but this man knows what service is. Through the ordering intercom, you could easily sense he was in a jovial mood, was well-spoken and expressed fine courtesy. I looked over at my wife after we pulled up in line and said to her..."when's the last time you had a drive-thru order that fantastic?" I pulled up and asked the gentleman if he was the man who took my order. He nodded and said "yes, sir". Being me and saying what I say without any buffer..."Dude...your service was fan-f***ing-tastic and I have not experienced a friendly voice over an intercom like that in years." He kind of looked at me like..."did he just say that?" Hell yes I did. No offense, please...but you murdered the service aspect of this visit and will leave a lasting impression. Unbelievable. Restaurant was clean, friendly service and the food was amazing, I wished I had taken a picture, but it looked so delicious, I had to dive in. We ordered wings, which doesn't have the traditional one Churches vibe, so if you are looking for those big wings, they no longer have them, butt...they are similar, but less breast meat. We also ordered the maccaroni and cheese, y'all when I say this maccaroni had some serious cheese pull, that's a under statement. All of these fast food Restaurants and some of these restaurants, beware, cause you got some serious competition and you better bring the "A" game, all I have to say on that. The fried okra and fries was hot, crispy and delicious. Let me be clear, all of my food was fresh and hot . They also have the delicious honey biscuits and I had to get the jalapeño peppers. THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN in Wilmington...period. The rice is nice and spicy, better than Bo's. AND they have fried okra, so you just can't beat that in my book. Whoever owns this location should be utterly ashamed of themselves!!!! Not only did it take 8 minutes to get my food at the drive through (with no update about my food), not only did they give me a small fry instead of a medium (which was $1.10 more), not only was the bottom half of the fries stale and cold, not only was my bag torn and the sauce from my chicken stained the interior of my car, not only did every employee working there look like they got there uniforms out of a dumpster... No. When I called in to make a complaint I was on "hold" (listening to employees banter back and forth in the distance) for over 15 minutes before I hung up!! I've been eating at Church's since I moved down here a few years ago and people would always laugh and ask me if I LIKED getting the runs when I told them I preferred Church's chicken to kfc. WELL, now I understand why! Last week I scraped up the last of my money to get a big meal for me and the girlfriend. When I get tired of eating sandwiches, ramen and hotdogs, I usually hit up churchs for the great prices on meals that will last me a few days til the next pay check comes in. My sister was over, so I thought it'd work out great for a late lunch to share too. It was a less than ten minute drive home and everything tasted fine. The chicken tasted a little off, but I didn't think anything of it. Until I spent the rest of the afternoon fighting for the bathroom with both the GF and my sister!! Good GOD, we were so sick. Nausea, diarrhea, cramps. Mild food poisoning!! I was in the bathroom the rest of the weekend. I practically wept throwing out the rest, because no one was going within a hundred yards of that food after that. Adding insult to injury that I wasted my 'special meal money' when I really needed it. I still don't know what caused it. The mac and cheese, chicken or potatos? Unfortunately, after being a big fan of this restaurant for years and going frequently, I'm going to have to say I won't be going back. I would never risk getting that sick again over some food. That and I don't think I could even taste it again without feeling the dry heaves coming up once more. I HATE leaving a terrible review, because I really did love this place. When I first came to wilmington I remember starving and scraping by until the rare time I'd ride the bus down and splurge on Churchs. The food was so good and reminded me of back home when I was feeling most homesick. Great tea, delicious biscuits! Made me very happy and the staff was so friendly. Just goes to show that it only takes one case of food poisoning to put you off to something forever! If I had to reckon a guess, I'd assume that whoever was cooking was not properly trained in handling raw chicken. The symptoms we had pointed to salmonella first most. If any of the food had touched a surface where raw chicken was, or if it wasn't properly cooked..well that's a recipe for disaster. I have ate here many times in the past and every time the chicken is always fresh and real consistent this time I tried the crispy fish and it was really good and fresh there are people that say the service here is not good it's always been good for me. Now the place does need to be updated bicycle just a complete remodel. Would I go back? Yes I would. Fabulous experience eating from here the previous night. Went in pretty late, around 9:10 or so, but the food was so hot and fresh and the people were so nice! i will give this place a 3/5. we went through the drive through and ordered 3 chicken boxes, and a crispy fish box. we ordered jalepeno bombers and we never received them. we had to pull forward and wait for our food, which is fine, it was a bigger order. we waited for a bout 10 minutes. when we got our order, the chicken was not very fresh even having to wait. nonetheless, they gave us the wrong chicken boxes, and no jalepeno bombers!! on the plus side, the food is good, just make sure you have everything before you drive away. read more
