From my earliest memories growing up in Texas, Church's Chicken was always part of the rotation, and this busy Wilkinson Boulevard location absolutely delivers that same nostalgia. Church's actually started in San Antonio, and somehow that crunchy, hot, fried chicken still tastes like comfort and childhood to me. This location stays busy, busy, busy -- which honestly is a good sign. The chicken is fried fresh to order, and I'm more than willing to wait for it because it's consistently hot, crispy, juicy, and satisfying. Not dried out, not sitting under a heat lamp for an hour, and not overly greasy. I usually go for the three-piece dark meat combo because dark meat is where the flavor lives. And that honey butter biscuit? Honestly, legendary. Sweet, sticky, buttery perfection. I also love their buttery corn, which hits every nostalgic comfort-food note for me. The sweet tea is serious Southern sweet tea territory, so I usually mix the sweet and unsweet to find my happy medium. If not, I'll take it home and doctor it up myself with lemon and sparkling water. No shame in the game. What I appreciate most is that even though this place moves fast and stays packed with takeout and app orders, the staff is consistently polite and efficient. Nobody makes you feel rushed or out of place, and they've always gotten my order right. The parking lot sits right on the busy corner of Wilkinson and Freedom Drive, and if you're heading home from the airport and craving something hot, crunchy, and comforting, this is absolutely worth the stop. I always get the big box, best deal ever. They close at 10, do not expect much at closing people want to go home. I leave work early to get there before 9. I used the app to place my order but I'm sitting outside. I really wanted the corn so I didn't order the big box, I got the 2 can dine for 9.99. It will be ready in 10 min. I go inside after 5 minutes they say they haven't started it yet. I wait patiently until it's ready. I leave get half way home and have to turn around, NO corn and mistake on that buffalo rub could not eat it. Anyway the manager tells me they picked my replacements because they are out of corn. Smokehouse chicken is pretty good but the birds are tiny. The milk in my fridge is older than the one I was served. BTW, who at Church's thought it was a good idea to change the fried chicken recipe and weird way they cut their chicken? Take a page from FoMoCo when some exec thought it good to change the name Taurus, most successful sedan platform ever, to the 500. Sales plummeted. Don't mess with what works. Clean up your stores and locate more stores in the mainstream. Bring back the former Church's chicken - it was distinctive - and much, much better. Service was good and friendly at this small fast food outlet on Wilkinson Blvd. I've been making my way through Bojangle's and KFC and Popeye's, so this was a natural continuation of that trend. The parking lot has some broken bits and a decent pot hole. The outside of the structure looks like it needs a good cleaning, but there was no trash. Inside, the floors could use a good scrub but the tables were clear and the condiments/soda station was maintained. My three piece box was served from a large pile of chicken pieces under a warmer in the kitchen. The staff were as efficient as I would expect for fast food, turning customers through swiftly. I took lunch to go and ate it from a picnic table about 5 minutes later - it was still hot and crispy. The chicken was actually rather bland, needing at least two packets of the Texas Pete to give it any flavor. The biscuit with it was sweet, covered in a honey and sugar glaze. The cole slaw was cold, a mayonnaise blend with larger pieces of cabbage leaf. Not my favorite fried chicken. For fast food, I'll stick to Bojangle's or a local joint. We were in Charlotte for a convention, and on a Sunday after the convention had finished up we went for a bit of a tour around the city. We saw a bunch of places, and by the end of the day we decided it was time to grab some food... and what better way to finish out a day like this than to grab some fried chicken? Stopped in at this Church's Chicken because we have had good luck with them in the past, and we were not disappointed this time either. They dropped some spicy fried chicken for us, and we sat and waited while waiting for it. We got to see some characters come through the line while we waited, too... there is always someone interesting going through the line here, it seems. Sadly, they were out of macaroni and cheese, as it seems to be a popular item, but that was alright... we went with a couple of other sides instead and when we got it back to our hotel room, we enjoyed all of it. Listen, it never fails unless a place is just totally gross, meaning unclean, dirty, and whatever else may be going on. When a place has a 94 or below food score, it may be better than expected. First, the service was wonderful, meaning I was acknowledged in a loving way and felt like I was at Big Mama's house. IYKYK. Being a Charlotte native Bojangles is usually my go to chicken spot but the wife and I began a quest to find the best chicken in Charlotte and in our travels we decided to try churches. Mind you neither of us had eaten here in over a decade. Originally we went to the one Eastway and it was terrible. We just so happen to be on Wilkinson shopping and saw this location. Long story short we pulled up lol. Customer service was decent, the food was made to order and we didn't have to wait a long time. Everything was hot and delicious. I will definitely come back here. My wife and I were driving by and found ourselves a bit hungry so we rolled on in and split a shrimp and tenders combo. We were greeted quickly and friendly and we got our order taken. There was a bit of a wait but we got our food and ate it in the car before we left. The whole experience was very nice and the only stop from giving them five stars is that the trash cans were well past the full point. But, they were doing their very best and they were very busy and if I was a restaurant manager I would be much more devoted to feeding hungry customers before taking out trash. read more

PLEASE DONT GO TO THIS PLACE! I went to Church's yesterday afternoon and order some food. The customer service was poor. Not only did the front counter cashier have a HORRIBLE attitude but the biscut was half cooked and gooey on the inside AND to top it off the CHICKEN STILL HAD FEATHERS ON IT! This to a customer. It is unacceptable and inexcusable! Its one thing to have the customer waiting and get it the order right, but it's another to be rushing and then serves this. I have to agree with my fellow Yelpers on both cleanliness and service. This location is way under par and needs a thorough scrubbing. Additionally, the service conveyed the idea that I was a nuisance and that they would rather I not bother them (which, of course, I won't). Maybe their regulars are accustomed to this, but I cannot imagine I will return (ultimately, this is management issue and since ALL their Charlotte locations score so poorly on Yelp, it's upper management). Somebody just doesn't give a ****! As for quality, my chicken was piping hot just out of the fryer. I just don't get their butchering techniques (they butcher the chicken across the backbone, so no traditional cuts except the legs). Therefore, in order to get more white meat, you have to order larger boxes with more pieces, which includes more dark meat which I don't prefer, and at a higher overall cost. I remember LOVING to go to this side of town and grabbing Church's Chicken! WOW has things changed. The establishment has always been a bit worn down, but is even more so over the years. The chicken isn't as crispy and juicy as I remembered. They make giant batches of fried chicken at a time so there is barely any guarantee of freshness. The honey-buttered biscuits used to be a crunchy, warm, giant ball of fluff, smothered in oh so sweet honey butter. Now? It's chewy biscuit drenched in honey butter and served at room temperature. The last time I had Churchs Chicken..1982, Columbia, SC..while stationed at Ft Jackson. Ah..the crispy crust on the chicken..save that for last when the chicken has all runned out. 2 days before payday, no money..Church's ALWAYS let me get enough chicken to feed my Transportation Squad. FIRST thing when I got paid..I paid them back and left a huge tip too. So, when I moved South..I kept on saying I want me some Church's Chicken. Well last night I did go. First thing I notice..no smell of chicken grease. Place is clean and smelled clean also. Customer service.. The Manger on duty..my hat goes off to you Madam. It's not easy running a tight ship..dealing with customers. The one who came in after eating 2 pieces of an 8 piece and some of the fries.. I too would have just gave him his money back and hoped in just walks out the door. Who needs the hassle right? The had fried okra too!! Not enough salt on it to my liking, but hey ya still had it for sale. What? Did they change the recipe, or has my taste buds changed over the many years? GOOD chicken stands up for itself if..
