After a Yelp search I found El Alegre Mexican Restaurant with really good reviews and an…read moreinteresting menu. A bit of a drive from Madison, but well worth it. El Alegre is located in a small modern strip of shops, with a party center they run next door. The restaurant is medium sized with a nice bar in the corner by the kitchen. The room is sleek and modern with black walls and tables, wood chairs and floors, and a colorful neon strip around the ceiling. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The menu is two sided and manages to have a nice variety without being overstuffed. I ended up ordering the Camarones a la Diabla, as someone who loves spicy shrimp it sounded great. A bit of a wait for the food, but the place was busy with the dining room almost full including a couple of larger tables. The chips and salsa was ok, but nothing special but provided a nice prelude while I waited for the meal. The meal came out nicely presented on a square white plate, which set off the colorful meal. The shrimp were nice sized, plump and well cooked; the sauce was excellent, not overly spicey, but instead complex and delicious with an interesting mix of flavors, it seemed to be similar to a mole instead of just a hot sauce. The refried beans and spanish rice were both good and the guacamole, sour cream and small salad was a nice compliment to the meal. The flour tortillas were very good, freshly griddled and fresh. I was very impressed with El Alegre, the decor is a nice change from most Mexican restaurants. I was very impressed with their version of Camarones a la Diabla, usually it is served with a fairly simple hot sauce, here they created a wonderful and complex sauce that perfectly complimented the shrimp and provided a true treat. If you are in the area and looking for some great Mexican food El Alegre is well worth a visit. If the rest of the menu is anything like my meal it is a great flavorful interpretation of Mexican food.

Of course there was a Taco Bell close to the exit from I-90, but that wasn't going to cut it. So, we found El Alegre about two miles into town. The place was packed Well, we had a very good meal with happy service. A big sign on the wall in the kitchen said "work hard and be nice to people ". Gotta love that. So we were coming South on I-90 and remembered El Alegre. Being vegetarian, I usually find plenty of options in a Mexican restaurant (and also Chinese and Italian). This menu had a vegetarian section with about six or seven choices, but I looked over the rest of the very large menu and found several versions of Chile Relleño. I've never seen anything but the one stuffed with cheese anywhere else. Well, they had a version stuffed with vegetables! I had to try it. I am so glad I did. It was delicious and a very generous portion served with rice and beans that rose above the standard usually experienced. My wife had a shrimp dish that I sampled and loved. She said the margaritas were also excellent. So, if you find yourself on I-90, you won't regret driving a couple miles off the highway to find El Alegre!

Came on a Sunday afternoon to a nearly empty restaurant and got seated immediately. Ordered horchata and enchiladas verdes and ny girlfriend ordered the enmoladas. The horchata was nice, though it wasn't fresh or homemade. I was mixed on the enchiladas verdes, since the rice, beans, and chicken tasted great. My only gripe was that the salsa verde was lacking in flavor and acidity I expect from a salsa. I got to taste the enmoladas and the sauce for that seems to be their signature. Delicious and complex. My girlfriend was very happy with her meal. I was also pleased to see that you can pre-order a dozen tamales a day ahead any time (not just seasonally) I will come back again, especially to pick up more tamales rojas and to try some other dishes

It's also rare to see these "antojitos" in the menu. I also tried the milanesa and that was my favorite. Thin and lightly breaded. So good! The fajitas and taco salad were delicious, as well. The service was good and the atmosphere very colorful. I'm looking forward to trying it again.

Birria Tacos have been all-the-talk, and I finally found a spot in town to try some! I found out…read moreabout this place from by BIL, via FB (I believe). Here's the 411 directly from their website--"At Palate Pleasures, it's the Chef's Choice. Our Menu rotates every SUNDAY! Try one of our Signature Sunday Brunches or Dinners and see what everyone's talking about!" The Process:: Pre-Orders are done online--and limited! I chose curbside pick up, which involved: noting your name, contact number and selecting a pick up time (every half hour, between 12-5 PM on Sunday). Upon arrival, a quick phone call is made and food was brought out quickly. The Grub:: I ordered The Birria Box, which included--8 Shredded Beef Birria Tacos, Rice, and Beans (or you could choose 4 Shredded Beef Birria Tacos and 8 Signature Party Wings). Condiments included--Consomme (To Dip Tacos), Hot Sauce and Guacamole Salsa. Everything is so flavorful, and each condiment only took the tacos up a notch! The beef is seasoned well and got perfectly with the crunchy taco shells! The shells look like they'd be oily, but surprisingly not and add good texture. The consommé is savory and tangy, very flavorful! The hot sauce is not spicy (at least not for me--I like a lotta heat!) and remind me of a chipotle spiced-buffalo sauce. The guac salsa is like a mild, creamy salsa verde with a different tang from the hot sauce. I definitely plan to order this again, and look forward to try other items in the near future!

Finally found a place in Madison that does these, and they are GREAT. The dinner combo was $15and came with rice, beans, and 4 tacos as well as lime, sauces and consumme to dip the tacos in. The beans were okay, but you're not coming here for the dang beans! We had the option of steak, shredded beef, or shrimp in the tacos, we went with the shredded beef and it was phenomenal. The cheese was melty and hot, the tortillas were crispy, the beef was well seasoned. Heck, even the plating was good and it was in a styrofoam box! I will for sure check this place out again. Their website says that they have a rotating selection every Sunday. And they pics on their website look super legit. I rode my bike here and just got the tacos brought outside, they usually do curbside pick up, but there was one small table out in the parking lot that worked great for us. My only regret with this place was that I didn't order more!
