It's Chuy's. What do I need to say other than creamy jalapeno. Chicka chicka boom boom. Nacho car happy hour. And giant red fish. It's always reliable. We can get in and out (especially in this location) in no time at all. Waitstaff is always competent and quick. We gorge ourselves on chips, salsa and creamy jalapeno until we can almost not eat our meals at all. My son now asks for Chuy's cheese enchilada on a regular basis. We have created a Chuy's fiend. The first step is to admit you have a problem. I'm an addict. I crave Chuy's. I need to have Creamy Jalapeno in my veins. If I don't get here each and every Wednesday for the Chicken Enchiladas with Green Chile Avocado sauce I'm a wreck for the rest of the week. One time I went to another location and they ran out of this special. I started to throw chairs. I mean I had to be restrained. It's not just the sauces that set Chuy's apart from other tex-mex places. The fajitas are well-marinated and never greasy. The chips are light and crispy. We have probably had a thousand bowls of Chuy's tortilla soup. It is loaded with veggies and chicken and tastes crisp, fresh with just the right blend of flavors and heat. I look forward to the annual Hatch Chile festival specials and I buy the funny t-shirts. I admit it's a problem. When I'm hungry I think what do I want, Chuy's or something else? I eat at Chuy's more than 100 times a year and I go to this location more than any other. I drive past the 183 location to come here instead because the wait times at 183 are always waaaaay too long. The staff at Lamar is friendly and most of them have worked here a long time. I miss the staff who have moved on recently: Rocky, bartender Marty, Miss Joy, and Adam. When I travel away from Austin, this is the first place I stop on my way home from ABIA. I grab a Chronicle on the way in the door, eat some chips, look at the funky decor, and feel like I'm home again. I was on a trip to Houston recently and tried a location there. While it had a different feel, like I was eating in someone else's kitchen, the food was just as yummy as here in Austin. As Chuy's is starting to expand into a regional and national chain, I can only hope that the original locations here in Austin do not suffer. I know some people don't like tex-mex and Chuy's will never be going for a Michelin-star rating. But for me, this is my favorite place to eat. read more

Chuy's... the Austin original that cannot be denied. Of all the overwhelming choices for Tex-Mex in this holiest of Tex-Mex cities, Chuy's is undeniably the go-to. Totally embodies the "Keep Austin Weird" mantra, while at the same time, backing up the quirkiness with solid tasting dishes. Chips and salsa are prefect but ask for the creamy jalapeño ranch dip as well. Customer service can be a LITTLE hit and miss, depending on which location you go to and what time of day, but overall its solid. The traditional beef and chicken fajitas are GREAT, the burritos are awesome and specifically the Hatch Green Chili Enchiladas are also some of our faves off the menu. Also, get there for Happy Hour, you won't be sorry. Yes, this is a chain restaurant, but the Austin original is the exception to that rule. Chuy's - Just because it's on the sign, I've learned, inside is not the same. Can never quite figure why This location seems to be my favorite of the bunch, but he food, service, and drinks seem to all work better for me than other Chuy's stops. Thank god the one they opened in Arlington a few years back closed, that one almost turned me off Chuy's altogether. When my smoker friends ( who also happen to be serious jalepeno ranch addicts) come into town, we usually end up eating at this Chuys several times a week. Why I like this one the best.... 1. Its in north austin right around the corner from my house. North side represent! 2. Its the least busy of all the Chuy's so you get sat quickly. 3. The bar area usually has space. 4. The free happy hour buffet is refreshed with regularity. 5. Every time I call and place an order they have it ready in under ten minutes. And they give me tons of extra dressing. 6. Its a little less "cool and hip" then the other Chuys but you'll get much better service and a much shorter wait. And if your a smoker, you can eat and smoke outside. read more

Well, I have visited Chuy's three times in the past month for the Green Hatch Chile festival and each of my visits has been really good. Chuy's is one of those Austin places that everyone loves, but should have been updated some time back in the early 90s. Yes, it was cool and hip back then, but they've done nothing to keep the vibe going. It's a bit like you hopped in your T.A.R.D.I.S and programmed it to take you somewhere exceptionally uninteresting. The food is decent, but exactly as you'd expect. There are no surprises here. Chuy's is my all-time favorite restaurant. It has never failed me. Every single time I eat here I am happy. My favorite thing to eat is the Big as Yo' Face burrito because it's big, tasty and you can pick your fillings and sauce. Great possibilities. Chalupas are tasty, the steak burrito is the bomb! Nachos are good, and my family love the enchiladas. You can't go wrong. If you go during Green Chile Fest make sure you get something from the the special menu. It's kind of too hot for me but such a good experience - just try and finish those spicy enchiladas. It's a pleasurable challenge. I grew up here, eating with my family on Sunday lunches (bonus if we could get out of church early and beat the crowds), special occasions (visiting home from college! birthdays! Mother's Day!), lazy Saturdays, and even random weeknights. It's our go-to place: affordable enough to go often, festive enough for a celebration, laid-back enough for the everyday, varied enough so you don't get tired of the food, and freaking delicious enough to keep coming back. I would say "I'm biased," but it's true. Chuy's really is this good. And to the people who complain about this being unhealthy, it's TEX MEX, not a salad bar. It's goal is not to be healthy. Still, you all know the drill, if you have to be healthy here - take half of your dinner home, or order something smaller and not fried like soft tacos or tortilla soup. Coming from a die-hard Tex-Mex aficionado, Chuy's is top notch. They have great queso, and the ultimate Texas-sized burritos. (Tip: The "big as yo face" burrito might be too big for one sitting, but they taste even better as cold leftovers.) They serve two types of salsas, one is pico-based, the other is...well, sort of ketchup-based. If they don't serve the complimentary creamy jalepeno dip with your salsa, be sure to ask for some! This location is the most convenient for us so we come here often. My favorite dish is the fish tacos with creamy jalapeño sauce. My husband gets the chuychanga and loves it. There chips and queso are decent. The have a great kids menu which is very helpful for us. We LOVE the drinks. One of the Best Mexican Martinis in town. My husband loves the margaritas. Ever since I met my girlfriend she has talked about Tex Mex and Chuy's. Being a native of Southern Colorado and used to great Mexican food, I was a bit skeptic when she raved about Chuy's. This past weekend I was lucky to finally see what all the fuss was about. After hearing about their queso for months we ordered some to get us started while we (actually I as she knew what she wanted) looked over the menu. I will say I was impressed with the queso. Too often you get queso that tastes too much like Velveeta and that is not a good thing, at least IMHO. I settled on the Elvis combo which had a cheese enchilada, a blue corn chicken enchilada and a beef enchilada along with a taco and tostada chips topped in queso. Our waiter was very attentive and kept our basket of chips and drinks full. Our food came out pretty quickly and I eagerly dug into the various enchiladas and burned my mouth in the process. The lady did warn me it was hot so perhaps it was my own fault. The enchiladas were pretty good, but I wasn't doing back flips over them. My favorite was probably the cheese enchilada which is not normal for me as I love me some chicken enchiladas. Something was a bit off, perhaps it was the blue corn tortilla, but I can't really put my finger on it. I really liked their salsa, but was too busy devouring the bowl of queso to enjoy it too much. Chuy's worked for me and am glad that we stopped in for some Tex Mex before we headed back to St Louis where good Mexican food is hard to find. I think my problem is I always compare new places to what I'm used to back home in Southern Colorado and the majority of those places come up short for me. Chuy's was pretty close for me but still came up short in a couple places. That being said I would not hesitate to come back the next time I am in Austin. read more

One of my favorite mexican restaurants in Austin! Not only is the food really good, it is vegetarian (not vegan) friendly, which is really very hard to find in a mexican restaurant. There are also grilled alternatives to many of the fried and battered dishes. The veggie burrito is tasty, but my favorite dish is "Baja Fish Tacos." This location gets crowded early at lunchtime during the week, and is always busy dinnertime because the excellent happy hour prices. read more

Chuy's has become a chain, and I'm not all that big into chains, but for the quality, Chuy's is pretty freakin good. I've had a couple of different things here. One thing that stands out for me is their chile relleno. I love chile rellenos, and not everyone knows how to stand out. I prefer my rellenos to be crispy, and that is how they are a chuy's, none of that soft batter stuff. This thing is golden brown and oh so crispy. I got the shrimp one, and I would prefer more shrimp in mine, but it was still full of melty goodness. This was my first time at the Chuy's on Barton Springs a while back. I also had the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom at the location in Round Rock. Actually, it was supposed to be white enchiladas or something (friday special?) but my girlfriend ordered the CCBB and it wound up being the same thing really. This was also a pleasing dish. Chicken enchiladas with a white queso on top. All was good with tender chicken and a very flavorful sauce. I haven't had much alcohol here, but my friend ordered the Texas Martini, and I tried some of it. It was pretty awesome. So, Chuy's is fun with good quality tex-mex and a nice atmosphere. Be prepared to wait a good 30 minutes to an hour on the weekend evenings, especially in Austin, the place gets bumpin! read more

It's a chain restaurant, but unlike some Mexican food chains, Chuy's has good quality tex-mex food. Combine this with a fun dining experience and you'll find me here once a week! Of course, I may be a little biased because I'm a sucker for chips/salsa and a good margarita---btw, you have to try the Mexican margarita--delicious! Ask the waitress to bring some jalepeno ranch sauce to dip your chips--you will probably want one bowl of this per person. Also, their queso is one of my favs. I usually get either the baja tacos or the enchiladas with chicka boom boom sauce. Both are equally tasty! I don't think I've ever tried anything here that I didn't like. I go to Chuy's every other week. I own 3 of their shirts. This is by far my favorite location in Austin. Here are my tips for enjoying your meal here: 1) Go during happy hour. (4-7pm weekdays) Their nacho car can't be beat! Free queso, and all of the fixin's is a beautiful thing. And the earlier the better. I've only had iffy service here maybe once or twice in my years of going here, and this is when I always go. My servers have almost always been helpful and seemed happy to be there so that's always good. 2) Get the Sauce. The sauce is what makes me keep coming back to Chuy's. Start with Creamy Jalapeno. It's free! Their green chile sauces are wonderful too, so I would recommend those for your entree. Even if the entree doesn't come with sauce, order it on the side and apply liberally. 3) Best entrees for a lighter meal: The #9 Chicken Combo or a cup of their Tortilla Soup are my favorite options when I don't want to be weighed down by a heavy meal. 4) Rice and Beans: If you want to try something different than refried beans and Mexican rice, their Green Chile Rice and Borracho Beans are great , hassle-free substitutes. All you have to do is ask! Just beware that the green chile rice does have a kick to it for sure. One thing to keep in mind, it is very loud if you're not there early enough so if you feel like a party atmosphere is not going to work for you, maybe try another day. All in all, Chuy's is an Austin landmark and with them spreading all over the country now, there's no excuse for not giving them a try at least. read more

They just don't have anything in particular going for them that would make me offer it up as a suggestion to a group of friends when someone says, "What about Mexican?" I am used to new england "Mexican" food, which is nothing like the food down here. I was very happy with the quality of food at Chuy's. The service was good, they definitely kept an eye on their tables. Everyone seemed very friendly as well. The salsa and chips were especially delicious. I will definitely return! Really tasty Tex-Mex and very reasonably priced! What I had: - House Margarita - not bad! I'd say it's tastes about a $4.00 happy hour margarita. Wish they didn't put in quite so much ice; I feel like I should get a little more for my money... - Stuffed Avocado - soooo good! Creamy avocado, chicken just a taaad dry (but it's served with a little queso sauce and chili, so not really a problem), and the right amount of panko breading. I could eat this stuffed avocado alllll day. - Hatch Green Chili Enchiladas - tasty , soft, corn tortillas with a yummy green chili sauce. Not particularly spicy. - Sides of Beans & Green Chili Rice - the Rice is really good! The best Mexican side of rice at any restaurant I've ever had! I wish I could get the recipe. The beans were like any side of refried beans you'd expect. Solid. - (Big as Yo' Face) Burrito w/ Chicken Fajita meat & Deluxe Tomatio Sauce - it was yummy! But not particularly memorable? There is so much cheese and sauce and beans, I probably wouldn't spend the extra money for the chicken fajita meat; just get the regular chicken. I'm not sure what was deluxe about the Tomatio sauce compared to just the regular Tomatio sauce, so I'd just get the regular one next time. Again, it was solid! I've had canned chicken once and the flavor is undeniable. The taquitos were yummy, spicy, and the only thing I truly enjoyed. The queso was straight Velveeta. Yuck. Been to this one and have been to one in Dallas, both at the request of someone else, and neither time was I impressed. Red onions in a cheese enchilada? really? Everyone knows this is the job of yellow onions. They're chips, salsa, queso (etc.) are excellent - but prepare to be disappointed when the food lands on the table in front of you. The "decor" on the walls have a layer of dust on them from not ever being wiped down, the staff are mostly hippies trying to make ends meet with a bottom end job that allows them to go out back and smoke a doobie between tables, and the wait for a table is just incredulous for the quality of the food. I honestly have no idea how this place stays packed all the time. I will never eat at another one, so long as I have a vote. read more

I work very close to this Chuy's so my coworkers and I end up visiting once every couple of weeks. Here are my observations: 1. Most of the waitstaff is excellent. Quick, accurate, anticipate your needs. 2. The hostess' can be, frankly, kind of bitchy. I get that they can't seat you until you entire party is there, but when they are there and you ask how long it's going to be and they say ten minutes and then fifteen go by and you go back and they say twenty more minutes and you ask why and they give you attitude. Seriously?! 3. I have a special order and 75% of the time, the kitchen gets it wrong. 4. The creamy jalapeno and salsa is awesome. 5. The bartenders here are retardedly good at their job. I went to Chuy's specifically to try their green chile specials this month. They were horrible! Seriously, if you are going to have a green chile fest at least put some green chiles in the dish, not just an essence of green chile. I was so disappointed in the food, we had the tilapia roja and the Hatch green chile tacos. The tilapia was cooked well, but just didn't have that big burst of flavor, the tacos were Horrible! I didn't even get the promised green chile sauce to put on them. Usually Chuy's has made a green chile salsa that they hand you with your chips, but this year I did not see any being passed around. That could also be due to the fact that we had a horrible waitperson who took forever to get drinks and food out to people at a time that the restaurant was not even busy. read more

First off, this is my first experience with Chuy's. Never heard of them. The staff is well trained and have a great disposition for the funky fun style Chuy's is obviously trying to target. I come to Austin a few times a year and normally eat lunch with an old friend who always wants to come here. I always get the same thing, so I can only vouch for that. First off, their chips are heavenly. Be sure to ask for the creamy jalepeno sauce! For lunch, it's the burrito "as big as yo face". I get ground beef and a regular tortilla. My friend, Heath, gets a multi grain tortilla and chicken. We both get the tomatillo sauce. I could bathe in it, it's so good. Maybe one day I'll be adventurous and try something different! read more
