Let me first be honest about who I am; I've gone to Maudie's on North Lamar since they opened 25 years ago. I drive a little further now but they are still my favorite Austin TexMex restaurant. The staff is friendly and efficient, the food is cooked the way i like it (delicious) and the flavors are definitely Austin TexMex (if there is such a thing). If you are a fan of the 'heat' try the Pete's breakfast taco. Oh, and they make their chips in-house e-v-e-r-y morning and hot sauce from fresh ingredients (like most of the menu). I also like that much of the staff has been there a long time, with many there since they opened. Lot's of other regulars too -- always a good sign. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, The best music comes from the kitchen and the food is straight from the heart. P.S. Dwight (4/2/26) says to "stay away from the Bran and Cheese Nachos". I must have missed seeing them on the menu. /s read more

When I crave some delicious Tex-Mex in my life, nothing quite hits the spot like Maudie's. This location is on North Lamar a bit south of Braker Lane. It has a small yet updated dining room and ample bar space and 4-5 outdoor tables. I sometimes like to dine-in on their patio (although wish the chairs were a bit more comfy). It was hot and humid AF last night, so I picked up dinner to-go for my partner and me. The staff at this location are always SO nice. When I called to order, the person who answered the phone remembered me, and he recalled most of our unique order even though we haven't ordered in awhile (been cooking at home more). When I arrived, everything was perfectly packaged for pickup and just as I ordered with all correct substitutions. Our go-to is a veggie burrito with chili con queso (on the side until we get home) instead of the chipotle sauce. Their grilled veggies are out of this world: portobello, corn, bell pepper, tomatoes, and spinach. Add some amazing refried beans and rice to it, and I'm in literal heaven. I brought home dinner, and it was SO delicious. My photos are from home once I unpacked everything. I think it was the best burrito we have had from this location, and the salsa and chips always hit the spot. I could literally drink their salsa, so I always purchase an extra 8 ounce salsa. Still really loving this place. Stopped in the other day and was not as hungry because I had a big breakfast earlier. Still, gotta eat. What's on the menu that won't be too much. Hmmm. Oh look, I can get a soft fajita chicken taco al la carte for just $5.75 and it was the perfect size I needed. So I left comfortably full and enjoyed a great meal. Also, I love their menu. Lots of color and fonts that pop out at you! Not your typical menu and it's fun to look though the many menu items. read more

With so many Tex-Mex options in North Austin, it's hard to pinpoint a clear favorite. I will say that although Maudie's is not great, they're GOOD and CONSISTENT. They offer a lot of different combos at very reasonable prices. Their creamy enchilada sauce is especially tasty! I even asked them to cater a party for my office, and they did a fine job - even allowing us to use one of their team members as a bartender. read more

I live south and was up north to go to Lucky Nail Supply. There is a big Asian community in this area with a Chinatown plaza nearby that I plan to explore soon so I was hungry and looked for places near me. I went at 10am on Saturday morning and there was plenty parking and not crowded (but it was when I left so keep that in mind). The pics on Yelp are beautiful but I wanted something a little more Tex Mex and while I wasn't a fan of the tortilla chips and salsa the fresh squeezed OJ was delicious and the chilaquiles was so yummy. I got the Pete's taco because it looked so yummy and IT WAS!!!! The potato was seasoned so well and the eggs and sausage and peppers and cheese were scrambled soft had lots of flavor on a soft flour tortilla. It was a quick and delicious breakfast with all my favorite thing: parking, great food, my server was sooooo nice and very affordable. read more

I usually love Maudie's restaurants, but this one? Not so much. My first experience here was Monday night with a rather large group (10 adults, 4 children) and a birthday celebration. We took up 6 two-top tables in the center of the larger room. On the positive side, we had a reserved thanks that was ready on time. And the food and drink we had was indeed good. On the negative side, lots. First, the happy hour menu has changed and not for the better. My favorite, the nachos compuestos have been removed. I can understand that at the $6 price point that was probably not possible to sustain. But at the same time I would have gladly paid $2 to $3 more on happy hour to get what I wanted. Maybe they should offer dollars off instead of fixed price? Another member of the party noticed, as did I, that the Mexi-Marts are getting skimpier. There's far more ice and far less drink. Service was kind but needed too much flagging for chip, salsa, and water refills. The biggest problem by far was the seating. I was uncomfortable all night because we were crammed three to a table for two. My girlfriend thought I was being intentionally cozy when I was really just trying to make room for the diner at the end of the table to eat. My girlfriend's plate and mine and drink glasses and Mexi-Mart shakers were all jammed on to one side of that two top. Note to Maudie's that just because a table has four sides does not mean it's large enough to seat four people comfortably. There really is no ambience to the location. Add to the experience the sketchy hood this location calls home, plus the unsavory characters constantly roaming the parking lot and this Maudie's is so not going to be a repeat performance for me. I'll give it 2.25 stars rounded down to two for the disappointing experience overall. I'll find another location to get my Maudie's fix. read more

Maudie's is an Austin staple and has many locations in the metropolitan area. My first visit to this location and I do not have a strong desire to come back as I was greeted by homeless people in the parking lot asking for money. Good and friendly service was the highlight of the visit. The chips were fresh, but very average... And the salsa tasted very generic... big change from the salsa, I remember. My main entrée consisted of two tamales and a cheese enchilada with onions. All served à la carte. Nothing special, really void of significant flavor... Very bland. Plenty of open, seating. There was plenty of space between each table, so you could have a private conversation. Many of the tables we're beginning to show some age, but still very functional. Bottom line - great service, cold beer, and very average bland food. Maudie's has traditionally and historically delivered over the years - maybe I need to give this location another shot. read more

Our family has been going to this location for so many years. We are always so warmly greeted by some of the same staff that have been there the whole time! I have a very deep relationship with Pete's Tacos and the enchiladas. All of the fare is traditional, straight ahead TexMex. You always know what you're going to get at Maudies. I'm posting 5 stars because they deserve it, but also to help bump the overall rating. It should be much higher. read more

Went here for a girl's night after being recommended by a friend and I was not very impressed. For starters, we walked in and were ignored for minutes trying to figure out if we sat ourselves or needed to wait for someone to show us to a table. When we finally sat, we were brought chips and salsa. The chips were hot and fresh and the salsa had a great kick to it. We started off with drinks and the chile con queso. The queso was great, would definitely reccomend! As it's constantly 100 degrees in Austin, I opted for a frozen strawberry marg. I originally ordered it with a chambord floater. They didn't have that so I got a patron mango floater and they didn't have that. I decided third time would not be the charm and told her I would just take it without the floater. I was not very impressed with it as it was pretty flavorless. I then got the blackberry mint margarita and sent that back as it was absolutely disgusting. I then opted for the frozen prickly pear margartia and while it was the best drink I had here, there's definitely better that exist in the world. For my meal, I had the chicken tomatillo enchilladas. The chicken was shredded and had a great flavor. The tomatillo sauce could've had a little more flavor. Overall, if I was to return it would only be for the queso. Not a place that I feel a need to make an ATX favorite. read more

We will definitely be back again for more! Their fajita chicken meat is moist and delicious. The chile relleno was just great. Table service was good and their restaurant and restrooms were quite clean. The Powerbowl with the option to use spinach and the black beans is good for you and super tasty. Nice to be able to get a healthy option for a change! Complimentary tortilla chips are thin and crispy and not too greasy, nor are they too salty like other places nearby. The free red salsa is above average. Iced tea was tasting really good. Plenty of parking in the parking lot. The pastry place next door would be a great place for desserts afterwards. Too bad my Powerbowl really filled me up nice and full. So no dessert for me today but don't sleep on the bakery next door to this place. Location is nice as you have a protected left turn at the light when going southbound on N Lamar. We came in after the lunch rush. Seems to be about the time the waitstaff are ending their shifts. Yet we still had plenty of attention to refill our drinks and waitress checked in on us regularly to see if we needed anything. Really can't ask for more here in the way of service. 2 little things that I believe are related. First, the men's restroom door did not have a functional lock and there's no individual stalls in there. Maybe I accidentally went into the employees men's restroom or something? There's no stalls in the men's restroom. So if the door is opened the entire dining room is gonna see you sitting on the toilet. Maybe they had a little sliding lock of some kind and I did not see it, or maybe the sliding lock fell off recently and management didn't notice. Secondly there is a lot of shall we say unusual foot traffic in this area. Not sure if there is a h0meless outreach place nearby or what. We had zero problems with anyone trying to approach or panhand1e. Kudos to the manager on duty. My dude spent a lot of time on his laptop working right there by the entrance. Probably to make sure only customers were coming in and out. He was also keeping an eye on the customer's cars too. We'd never avoid such a great restaurant because of a sadly common North Lamar problem which is beyond their control. I suspect the broken bathroom lock is due to a non-customer sneaking in there and doing... well... whatever. We will be back to try dishes with beef next time! The flavor of the food was "fine." The service was good. We had the fajitas with corn tortillas. And then I begged for death for the next 3-4 days. It's been years since I've been that ill. I couldn't eat for over three days. If you have a gluten allergy... be afraid. There shouldn't have been any gluten in that... But, hey, I dropped like 10lbs in a few days. Also, I saved a lot of money by not being able to consume anything but water for a few days... So... Caveat emptor. read more

Friendly staff but during a busy Friday lunch rush, they were slow to take our order, refill the chips, or ask if we were ready for our check. The queso was ooey and gooey, a perfect compliment to the chips and salsa. My sister got the lunch enchilada plate and was in Texas-Mex chili con carne heaven. Still have not figured out how to use tongs or bar napkins to handle lemons and limes, and rather than fix the problem, and knowing it is wrong to grab them with bare hands, staff simply puts their body between what they're doing and the customer now. As much as I like the food, I eat here now only about once every six months and I'm always wondering why I go back. They still explained to me every time that the item ordering already has cooked onions in it and I have to ask three or four times that they also add raw onions to it at the end and for some reason that is just so confusing. How about just giving people what they're asking for, and don't worry so much about how they want to eat their food. read more

I have frequented all the Maudie's for the past 16 years. I love this one now that I live north. It's always the same most awesome staff. I love the Diablo soul food queso, the chicken fajitas are the best as well as the Sissy tacos and cheese enchiladas with Chile con carne. Apologies if I am not writing all the good foods correctly. The iced tea is always fresh. The man that works there is awesome and all the staff is just impeccable and again, the chicken fajitas are a virtue!!! Enjoy! Came here for dinner with a friend and would call this a good neighborhood restaurant to grab happy hour drinks or a quick bite. They are technically dog friendly, but there's not a lot of seating out front. One big pro of this location is that it is way easier to find parking and it's not super crowded. The house margarita and the mango swirl margaritas were good and almost too easy to drink! Food wise, I had the Tio Chon Enchilada Plate which has so many delicious sauces covering cheese enchiladas. However, the enchiladas were pretty flat and kind of just disappeared. My friend had the Josie's enchiladas which she said are perfect for cheese lovers because they are very generous with the queso on top. Service wise, I really enjoyed being taken care of by Gerardo. He was attentive, kind, and even went out of his way to bring water for my dog and just laughed when my baby got his leash tangled around his legs. Big shout out to an awesome person. read more

Last Thursday, I came to this location for lunch. So, here's the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls. All of them had hair of gold, like their mother--wait, I mean, here's the story of what happened at this establishment. Chapter one (The Intro): Immediately upon sitting at the table, the server (who also seated me) asked me "What do you want to drink"? Once I advised what I wanted, she then asked me "Do you want some Queso or Guacamole"? I declined the offer. When she returned with my beverage, I asked her about the lunch special; the Carne Guisada. More specifically, I asked "what comes with this special"? Her retort was "tortillas". I ordered the Carne Guisada lunch special. Chapter two (The Delivery): When I received my meal, there was a piece of napkin paper atop the refried beans. This lack of proper expediting before the meal was delivered was unappealing. The Guisada itself lacked flavor. Chapter three: (The Bill): The lack of communication with the hostess/server was off-putting. I was not aware of the server's name until I received my bill as the server's name was on it. Emilio and staff are very welcoming and helpful!! We have eaten at the N Lamar location for about eight years now. There are very few times where it was not five star yet the food has always been good as expected. This Maudie's location is just the best one!!! The 360 location could learn a lot from this location and the location by the two story HEB!! Thank you, Emilio and staff for your service and tasty food!!! ***adding that this restaurant is always clean, even the bathroom! You can see inside the kitchen and it is clean. This matters a lot to me. Yes, while there may be some homeless people outside at times, they have never bothered us nor given us any trouble. The management keeps an eye on this as well, and are respectful if they need to address someone. You see many homeless people all along North Lamar. They have never been an issue to us when we go to Maudie's. read more

Been Eons since we visited Maudies, and only to look at my past review we have never tried there lunch menu. I can tell you they didnt disappoint at all....Really liked the trio app with Spicy Beans, Guac and Queso. Chips were fresh....Wife went with Beef Lovers Chiladas , double rice.....They were packed and tasted good....and myself I hit the Poblano Crema Chiladas with Rice and Beans. You truly dont see Poblano sauces on a lot of menus around town, and this one was really good. Chicken was tender...Rice and Beans were standard, but still good...Plates were empty when we left...Service was spot on as well. Lots of menu items to still try. read more

Came here for lunch today and I would say this is not my favorite location, for multiple reasons. The food is here typically good and consistent. The guacamole today was more brown than green. The queso was quite cold. The chips were hot though! Our chicken quesadilla order was messed up and came out to be only cheese quesadilla. The food runner was quick to take it back and get it fixed. We asked the server for napkins multiple times but she never got us any. She was more on the other side of the restaurant most of our dining experience. She was nice though, but not very attentive. The other servers were quick to refill our drinks though. Overall the value is good, but it's a hit or miss experience at this location. I do love the 360 location though. read more

Our server was very inattentive. They said we were of sweet potatoes 20 minutes after ordering which should have been clarified immediately. The food was okay. I would recommend going to the south austin location instead. I wouldn't recommend this location at all. read more

Love their Tex-Mex. This location can get super busy, so prepare to be patient. Servers are friendly and are hustlers. They need to check in a bit more especially for alcohol drink reorders. Sometimes I can't get their attention, so they miss a follow-up sale for a second drink, which would mean a larger tip. Our only complaint is: sometimes they have Fox News on, which is an appetite killer. Please stick to sports. read more
