I've been a fan of Taco Flats since the OG location on Burnet Rd. I've been to many of Simon's restaurants and was very excited to have this location open up near me. At first, I was disappointed with the scan to order process as I'm old school and like talking with people, but then I realized when you sit at the bar you order from the bar and that saved the experience for me. The bartenders are really nice. They remember us when we go in and remember our drink orders. There's often a crew of folks hanging out outside and inside and it has this cool neighborhood bar vibe. I also think they have some of the best tacos in town. I can highly recommend the hippy, the pescadito and the chilango shrimp. So good. Also, the Pirata is next level -- beef and grilled jack cheese. That grilled jack cheese is amazing. The salad is also better than you'd expect with jicama and berries. They make their own chips so I can also recommend the ponchos. If you're a cocktail person, this is a great place for you. They have creative drinks like the Oaxacan Wipeout which is a spicy, mezcal margarita with pineapple. They also have Jellyfish and other great local beers. This location is probably the best for watching sports because of all of the huge TVs in there and the layout. Self ordering and pay made it easy to get in and out for lunch. Love that. The chips and salsa were a bit spicier than I anticipated. But still fresh and delicious. Loved the tacos! The Dirty South was HUGE. The Birria taco was so flavorful and well-made. I really enjoyed it. None of the side junk you usually just throw away anyway. No fillers. Just straight to the point. I also tried the watermelon agua fresca. Very good. A bit overpriced, but very tasty. Could have consumed 2, easily. But $13 for watermelon juice is just too much. But I'm glad I tried it. I eagerly anticipated the arrival of Taco Flats as I've always enjoyed my visits to their Burnet Rd location. As a bonus when I have my infrequent office visits I can walk to this location. They did a great job remodeling/gutting the old Riata Bar. There is a great wrap around bar with a good selection of craft beer and big screen TVs. We sat at the bar and service was spot on. So why only 3 stars you ask? The food is Meh at best. I ordered my two favorite tacos Carne Asada and Pork Al Pastor. The cook must have had is elbow up as he was adding salt as this taco was beyond salty and the beef was dry as if it was sitting under a heat lamp for hours. Being consistent the pork in the Al Pastor taco was completely dried out and stringy. Three stars is a generous rating. I will give them another try and I truly hope that this is a one-off. read more

If you're working in the general area and you don't have access to a cafeteria, the options are pretty slim within walking distance. This place is walkable from the research and riata office parks. There have been a few work events that we didn't have food provided but we wanted to get a no nonsense lunch without having to figure out carpooling etc - this is a good option. The restaurant is more set up like a bar. However, there is a large table in the corner that can accommodate a group. You order through QR code so it makes it easy to order and lessens the burden of splitting the bill. There are a wide range of tacos here. If you have a decent appetite 2 tacos will do. I would say these are okay tacos more on the caliber of torchy's but they do the job. They have a decent margarita too if you want to make it an old school 1950's business lunch sans the martini. read more

Tacos for hipsters, poseurs, scenesters and poets... and bosses in bad crisp white shirts who don't know it. In an ideal Yelp way, 3 stars is a solid rating but in reality, someone's gonna get their feelings hurt. Regardless, let's taco about it. Alternative title: "I came in hungry, left greasy". Taco Flats at Riata has all the appeals of a hipster joint in an upscale office park adjacent strip mall in a planned "resort style" apartment community. It all checks out! Everything from the qr-code order and pay on your phone service to the modern industrial-chic look they've got going on. "¡Autentico!" We came in search of Birria tacos, which have already jumped the culinary shark (brussels sprout?), this place was nearby. Not having been yet, we high fives and proclaimed, "game on!" Along with my in-house counsel, we both got a Birria taco a piece. She got a chori-queso taco and a beer and I also got an al pastor. "Never shop hungry" is good advice, if you can get it, so being hungry we ordered a small queso. Chips and Queso: Generally disappointing. The chips are tasty but are DROWNING in a spice (paprika?) which is overwhelming and a turnoff. The cheese itself wasn't super hot so it didn't act like queso should. (Eg. it was too firm and not runny enough). Also the menu boasted about jalapenos but there was a sprinkling of something not spicy. "White people queso!" was a phrase that was uttered. Additionally it was served in a to go container. Who likes eating in a restaurant as if you're outside? Would not order again. The Birria taco was a study on "what to do when you diced too many onions". I love me onion and cilantro. I usually ask for extra. Here, however, you couldn't even dip the taco in the consommé because it was all onion. The tortillas were fried and greasy. Tasty, but greasy. Would not order again. Al pastor followed suit. It was also tasty but a pile of onions and pineapple. Grease city. Also the meat chunks were HUGE. Would probably order again, if I return which is... unlikely. Was the food filling? Yes. Was it tasty? Yes. Was it amazing? no. Was it pricey? Yes. Did I hate myself a tiny bit afterwards, also yes. Taco flats seems to be a safe place for yuppies and hipsters to enjoy an expensive taco and a beer. It set us back ~$50 for two people at lunch (with one beer and a queso). Service is awful. I came in before the lunch rush arrived, sat at the bar and after 40 minutes of ordering three tacos my food never arrived so I left. Other folks had walked in after me and were served their food but I didn't even see the bartender after I ordered as she was waiting on others and serving drinks. This is a nice little joint. I can see this being a frequented establishment for the local businesses. The service was great. I think they need to invest a little more time and effort into their ingredients and style of cooking, and the menu/pricing... I can see this being somewhere all the local corp. America employees say... "Tacos Flats! Let's go!" Examples: 1) you don't just pour a cup of chopped pineapple on top of cooked pork and call it Al Pastor. No one wants that much fruit in a taco. It's a seasoning, flavor, that you cook the pork in, and maybe add a little on top as a garnish. 2) if you cut the amount of fruit you add to the tacos, you can probably lower your pricing a little, and maybe add a small amount of chips, instead of only selling chips as a side item. 3) I think I speak for the majority that when you have tacos and chips, you don't need to season the chips. The focus of flavor and enjoyment is the taco. Change your chips to plain LIGHTLY salted (maybe lime if you want to get fancy) chips. Otherwise, it's too much to have with a taco, or with salsa, or with guac (which was also over-salted). 4) Guac... man oh man. I've never had guac with cilantro and jalapeno as a garnish only. You can tell by the flavor that you didn't cook/mix with any of these ingredients, yet that's what the flavor is. Try making the guac with maybe a tenth of the salt being used, and add cilantro and jalapeno MIXED INTO the guac, not as a garnish. I think you guys got a good thing going here, and with a few changes, you can be a staple eatery in the area, and outlast all the others who didn't last in that space. read more

Returned during work week and they now have a brunch/breakfast taco. I hit the Dirty South and a beer and it was great. Something about huge black refried beans and toasted cheese on the tortilla makes this new and interesting. Highly recommended. read more

Been to the other locations many times and am a huge fan. This was my first time visiting this location and it has a lot of room for improvement... Cons: Extremely slow service (only 1 person at bar, 1 person taking orders during 12pm lunch rush when it was very busy. the staff was nice but it took an excessive amount of time for any sort of service) Papas fries were soggy/undercooked and cut in a different shape than other locations... please go back to the cut/recipe that are at the other locations! Birria taco tortilla was dry and crispy, almost burnt, and deformed (other locations cook it perfectly, so this was disappointing) Pros: Good amount of parking Large bar area, lots of seating Chips and Dip Trio (queso, guac, salsa) were just as good as other locations- my fav! Overall, this could be a great restaurant in a great location with some improvements to the service and food. read more

I've been to the Burnet location a couple of times so was happy to see a Taco Flats open up in the old Riata Bar & Grill. I hope they can survive because that office park still looks a bit abandoned due to so many tech workers being remote these days. The ordering system is minimal contact (probably a holdover from covid), you scan the code on your table & order from there. This annoyed some at our table but it doesn't bother me. The food was quite good, very flavorful and good sized servings. I think a lot of people in Austin have pretty firm ideas about how Tex Mex should taste, and a lot of it has to do with sentimentality and good times spent with friends. To be honest, I've never understood the appeal of places like Chuy's or Hula Hut (Yes I know Chuy's & Hula Hut are the same owners) or any of the other joints that throw unseasoned meat on a flour tortilla and call it a taco. It's all so, so bland. I had the birria taco (these are always messy to eat) and the al pastor and we all had queso & guac & chips. All well seasoned and all delicious. I won't say it's the very best I've had in town, but dang, I'll go here over Chuy's or any other bland tex-mex any day. read more

Heard so many good things about this place so I was excited to try it when it recently opened about a mile from me. Unfortunately I made the mistake of ordering through doordash while my car is in the shop. I'll start by saying that I don't fully blame the restaurant and will be a returning customer. It took about 45 minutes for a dasher to be assigned to my order. Not the stores fault. The food arrived lukewarm and had clearly been ready for a while before it was picked up. As a past service worker I personally would've remade the order for the customer but I understand the restaurant isn't obligated to so I'm basing this solely on the taste of three items I ordered and not the freshness because it was out of the restaurants control. I blame doordash. The queso: very thick, edible but not the best. 4/10 Wouldn't order again. The chicken mole taco: corn tortilla was very thin. Chicken was kind of bland and no mole flavor. there was a lot of beans. 1/10 definitely wouldn't order again. The gringa: I only ate the inside of the taco because the tortilla was very soggy from it sitting BUT the pastor was so good and very flavorful, I had some of the tortilla and it was very good and noticeably handmade. I know that taco has to be AMAZING freshly made so I'll be ordering it again but will probably dine in lol I will say that I like my pastor a little greasy so be warned it is on the greasy side. I love having this cozy restaurant within walking distance of where I live. I usually get chips and queso and build your own tacos. My partner and I love the chips. I think the food is really good overall. It can get a little pricey, and there's often only one server working, but they've always gotten the food out quickly. read more
