8/25/24 More than decent tacos, actually better than I expected! As you walk in you can immediately hear the Spanish songs playing (just a bit) loudly. Hubby is very sensitive to noise so he had me order the food at the front/cashier area. We've passed by this Mexican food joint a few times coz it's located by the main drag, Central Avenue. It's in a small plaza where a check cashing, hair cut & insurance place is also providing their businesses. There are about a dozen booths inside & perhaps 3 sets of outdoor seating in this small restaurant. The young lady tending as the cashier/order taker is very pleasant & fairly knowledgeable about what they offer. Hubby's order will usually be al pastor tacos (if breakfast then he would prefer chirizo). I was interested in the Gobernador con crema & a shrimp taco. Maybe the soda fountain is out of order coz she said they only have canned or bottled beverages. Within a few minutes, our tacos are ready. See photos. Looks a bit on the tiny portion but presented very well with fresh pico de gallo & mine has crema. The small tacos are packed with great flavors. I was surprised at how plump & juicy the shrimp were & the cool sliced radish on the side gave it a good refreshing finish. The spices on the pastor tacos were well balanced & oh so good!! Hit the spot! I don't know about y'all but this was a fun & tasty snack! LoL. All 6 tacos cost $19.20, not bad!! How delicious & delightful was the service & the food!!! We are definitely coming back to try other items on the menu-I am looking forward to the pozole Yum! Absolutely legit local find. Family friendly and family owned. I came here two days in a row. 3 days in one week. The food is great. The menu is extensive. There are plenty of choices from Caldo, tacos, burrtos, sopes, quesdilla, and combinations. Everything is fresh and delicious. They have coffee, fountain drinks, cans, and bottles. A few fresh juices as well. The carne asada burrito is delicious. There is something about the flour tortilla that I really enjoyed. It was packed with carne asada, cheese, rice, beans, and cheese. Came with a side of green or red salsa. For not being a bean girl, these beans were good. The breakfast burritos with asada and egg are equally delicious. Super filling. The carne asada quesdilla was good too. I am a fan. Remember to ask for chips.

It was a late dinner time for us and we wanted to find something pronto but not fast food. We pulled out the Big Red Yelp button for help and this little gem popped up. We came on a Friday evening to only return Sunday afternoon. Friendly staff, clean inside, and food is great! Overall everything had authentic flavors. We had red cheese enchiladas plate, potato taco plate, asada fries and horchatas. The first time we came here we ordered carne asada nachos to share and we were convinced this place has good cooks and food is worth the return. I want to try the menudo!

So I checked out this spot for some Taco Tuesday while I was in the area. The tacos were $1.49 each and I got Carne Asada & Al Pastor tacos. Both were good but I preferred the Al Pastor over the Carne Asada. Definitely be back for more tacos in the future!

An AMAZING family-owned Mexican restaurant! Order your food at the front and they'll bring it to your table. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the pricing-portion ratios were perfect! We got a good amount of food and they were priced quite cheap! The food was also very good! Their Birria was very tasty with just the right amount of flavor and the meat was super juicy and tender. My favorite thing was the fact that they make homemade tortillas to go along with their dishes! Very cute and homey place, I 100% recommend coming here for a meal! We'll definitely be coming back!

Let's start off by saying I'm so glad I found this place, it truly is authentic. The location is a little small but despite that, it's comfy. It's always clean, they are always friendly and the food never disappoints. The caldos are soooo good. I definitely recommend this Mexican restaurant!

I used to love coming here because it's literally around the corner from me, but it has gotten WAY too expensive for the amount of food you get. Don't get me wrong, the food tastes great, but the amount of food you get is not worth the price they charge. I ordered chilaquiles with egg and chicken. I got charged a little over $25, like what!!! The chilaquiles by themselves are $12.50, then they add $2 for the eggs and $6.50 for chicken. I wish I had been told the price before I placed the order, I would have gotten food somewhere else. The fact that it's literally just a pounded slice of chicken slapped on top of the chilaquiles, did not help. So disappointed. Unfortunately we won't be coming here anymore. Oh, and if you're looking to get what you paid for, 2 Broken Yolks has an amazing LARGE chilaquiles bowl with shredded chicken, eggs any way you want, cheese, red onion, cilantro, and sour cream. And it's still slightly cheaper than this plate.

I wasn't a believer of how many stars this place had. I had to try it. This place has delicious food. We had street tacos & the rib plate and they are pretty damn good. I recommend this place. Oh yeah, the service was good too. One more thing. The table booths can be slightly moved so my husband can fit his fat belly in it! read more

First time here . My daughter who lives in another city called me and said go get me some corn tamales. Said she checked and this was the best place around for them. I decided to eat here I got shrimp fajita.They made my husband a wet burrito. It was super cool because it wasn't on the menu. Homemade EVERYTHING. Will be back . My BF and I came here late Saturday for lunch. We had the two taco place special with rice and beans for $5.99. We each got an asada and pollo taco. The Asada was amazing and had great flavoring and the chicken was pretty good too. We also got chips and salsa. The chips was homemade and thick so yummy and tasty The salsa was also pretty amazing here. The young man who helped us was very friendly and very attentive. We were in the area and checked Yelp for good Mexican food. We would definitely go back again. it's too bad we don't live in the area because that place is definitely once or twice a week place if you lived right near there. read more

Such a great place! The menudo is the most delicious we have tasted. On Sundays my Mom has my husband pick up three menudos to bring home. It's always freshly made. It is not greasy like other places. Plus, the tripe is always cut in nice pieces, and they don't throw in the 'funny looking ones' like at other places. The tortillas are handmade and so good! The corn tamales are the absolute best. So tasty! read more

This is a hidden gem in the area. The food tastes homemade as if your Mom or Grandma made it. They're from the same state in Mexico that my family is from, Michoacan, and they have the 'sazon' Try it out, you won't be disappointed. read more

I went to visit my dad and stopped by to grab some lunch for us, I got some tacos de papa and loved the tacos. My dad loved them too. The owner was very sweet, I think its family owned. The restaurant is small but loved supporting their small business. I will be definitely stopping by for lunch here every time I visit. read more

The service was terrible very unprofessional, lack of service. We were not even greeted when we arrived. Ordered some coffee had some trouble with the pumps from the creamer and was brought up to their attention and didn't even bother to help. Will never even consider coming back. Can't give my opinion on the ambiance I was not there long enough. read more

I'm writing this now as I eat. I ordered an asada taco, chicken tamale, and a chile relleno and chicken enchilada combo to-go. The asada taco was delicious. Meat was very moist, not dry. It came with the basic cilantro, onion with radish and lime on the side. The chicken tamale was very small (see pics), but the masa was very moist and fluffy. The tamale was full of meat, but the chicken didn't have much flavor or sauce. The chicken enchilada with verde sauce was tasty. The shredded chicken breast meat was very moist and melted in my mouth. The chile relleno was fresh, the chile was well-roasted and tender, but the egg batter was soggy due to the watery tomato sauce that was poured over it. I would suggest a thicker sauce for the relleno. The beans and rice were average, not much flavor but tasted fresh and homemade. Mari(a) was nice enough to give me chips and salsa to go for free. I would have gladly paid but she said I didn't have to. The salsas were a little watery but had good flavor. I tried the hot, mild green, and a mild red. Hot wasn't hot at all, to me at least, but had a bit more spice than the mild. In all, I will return because the food is fresh, homemade, and tasty. Just get extra salsa for the tamale and add a little salt/pepper to the rice and beans and you'll be fine. read more

This place is a total hidden gem! I lived in Montclair for over 4 years and I can't believe I've never tried it till today ! If you're looking for good authentic Mexican food that hits the spot, you definitely have to try this! the food here is amazing. They hand-make their tortillas fresh, and you can absolutely taste the difference. I loved everything about it ! I highly recommend this to everyone! 10/10 read more

My First time here I waited 30+ minutes for ONE chorizo burrito & Chilaquiles. After sitting there for 30+mins they decide to inform me that they do not have eggs and if I would like to order something else or substitute the eggs for meat. STRIKE 1 Second time here I waited 45 +mins for two orders of Chilaquiles. I literally do not understand why the wait is so long for tortilla and eggs basically. STRIKE 2 Third time visiting I waited over an hour for one burrito and Chilaquiles! I want to say it was about 70 mins. Mind you there was no line just people sitting at the tables waiting for there food. One man informed me he waited 2 hours for one burrito ! STRIKE 3 ... IM OUT I don't understand why it takes hours to make food that should be semi prepped. Breakfast items like Chilaquiles/ chorizo and eggs, etc should not take 70 mins. Just word of advice .... Do not come here if you don't want to wait 30+ mins for your food . read more

**Authentic Mexican flavors found HERE!** Cozy. Festive. Clean. Plenty of parking in the little shopping center where it's nestled. The Mexican food at this little restaurant is way more delicious than any of the fancy so called first class restaurants on our last trip to Mexico!!! We were craving some tortas and found THIS little gem. Everything looks delicious and I can't wait to come back for the menudo, Chile relleno, chilaquiles, the camarones al mojo de ajo, the.... ok,ok, you get the idea We got a carne asada torta and an al pastor torta both delicious! They had jalapenos, beans, fresh ingredients and salsita on the side. I got an agua de melon ( yummmm) and my husband got a Mexican coke to wash it all down **ahhhh** You go up and order then sit wherever there's room. A really nice person delivers a warm basket of tortilla chips and a side of home made salsa to your table to enjoy while you wait while your delicious meal is being prepared. What else do you want? Favorite thing on the menu: Asada burrito. I've been to taco man, Elvira's, king taco, etc. and nothing beats this place. The food is very flavorful that's why I keep coming back. I haven't tried anything else, but if you want a good carne asada burrito come here. read more

Parking: Easy, lot I am pretty disappointed by my experience. I ordered -3 tacos, lengua, pastor and birria -menudo -rice pudding -horchata I think the best taco was birria because it was still juicy. Menudo was not flavorful to me. I think it was under salted and not hearty. I added the chili oil which helped but all it really did was add spice. Rice pudding wasn't too sweet which I liked but the rice was soft and chewy. It felt like one texture and very dry. Horchata was watered down by the end of the night. Not very good. Sad to say, I thought it was going to be good but yelp reviews were deceiving. Wouldn't come back. read more

First time trying Chuy's Cocina... and omg sooo good. I am pretty picky with my Mexican food because my mom cooks so good, but this place is definitely 5 star. I tried the menudo, handmade tortillas, and the beans. Everything was so good. I met Chuy and his staff. He shared his humble story, his use of only fresh, clean ingredients, and good passion for providing great food. He mentioned he would never sacrifice quality, which I appreciate! The service is amazing, and the food is definitely legit and great flavor. I 100% recommend this place. read more

I noticed that 7 out of 10 restaurants are marking the prices higher in 2022 (Mexican) "Rice and Beans hardly go up" Chuys prices went up, 2 - 3 dollars more almost in each plate. Now they have "No free chips & salsa" This is a whole in the wall, not very clean. The food gets to the table cold. They don't have a budget for real waiter (waitress). You will see the cook bringing your food to your table. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There many choices out there that offer us : Great food. Reasonable prices. and great clean service. read more

Soooooo we literally just finished our food and OMG. This was our 1st time here and definitely not our last. Hugo was an absolute sweetheart. So friendly and welcoming. During these trying times I'm all about supporting local businesses and this place definitely earned my business along with my families. While waiting for our food, Hugo gave me a sample of Costillas en Salsa Roja with a cup of aqua Fresca.. Holy shit AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING... That's exactly what I'll be ordering next.. We ordered a ton of food and it was worth the wait. Mulitas, tacos soft and hard, burritos, sopes, rice, beans and homemade Pineapple Empanadas. My kids who are picky eaters ate ALL of their food too.. I am so stuffed.. Thank you Hugo and the cooks who made our delicious food. Can't wait to come back. read more

Goodbye Los Portales hello Chuy's. Finally found a place where everything is great. The soups here are amazing, you can tell this place puts pride and time in the flavor of the food. Bierria tacos and Al Pastor is an easy must have. My favorite has to be the Posole, Menudo and Milanesa , very traditional Mexican flavors. If your a local this is a way better place then Los Portales across the street. To add on the service is great, so glad I found this hidden gem. read more

Today, on a Tuesday, I ordered 5 of their .99 tacos. 3 pollo, 1 pastor, 1 asada. Total paid in cash was $6.53. I'm new to the area but how do they get a charge of $6.53 from $4.95? Are there special taxes for their Tuesday taco deal?

The restaurant has potential and the complimentary chips and salsa were enjoyable, but the food-to-price ratio just wasn't there for me this visit. If I come back, I might just bring my own guacamole and save a few bucks.

I'd stumbled in here a few nights ago- Mexico had just defeated a hearty South Korea squad in their second WC game, clinching the Group for El Tri and creating a palpable buzz among the Green/Orange & Red clad partisans who'd thronged El Ranchero... Leti and I shared a bowl of hearty Albondigas Soup to start- This is probably the finest restaurant take on the soup we've ever sampled! Most places will serve watery, tomato/carrot dense broths w/ a nominal, wan meatball. Not El Ranchero! Here, the soup is lovingly ladled w/ copious amounts of carrot, onion, cabbage and yes even a trio of meatballs. Hearty, decadent soup! We also shared a Jamaica Margarita. On the plus side it's $13 tab is decently priced- but if we are honest the drink was weaker than the Trump Administration is on corruption! She was even mixing drinks in between serving her sextet of tables! Pro Tip- You can add a side salad or soup to most entrees for $3.99- Just ask! Our bill was $84 and for two plentiful entrees, a large if wan margarita and a side of wondrous, soul-warming soup...plus tax and tip. It's very easy to see why El Ranchero Claremont is a buzzing hub of its community- We've added El Ranchero to our must-visit Mexican staples. So should you.
