The food is outstanding! For taco Tuesday I ordered 2 chicken tacos and 1 ribeye taco For $3 each. The ribeye was delicious but I thought the chicken was dry. They took back the 2 chicken tacos and gave me 2 fresh rib eye tacos. Delicious!! Great service!! Then at the end of my meal I asked for my check and they said the meal is taken care of! On Sunday June 28 had the opportunity to join my daughter on her early birthday celebration. 6pm reservations and the restaurant was hopping with music good conversations and beautiful ambiance so having just driven 60 miles from San Clemente to Claremont it did not disappoint. Sat at the bar while I waited for the of the party of 10 to arrived ordered a drink 4 minutes later family arrived and promptly seated at our table. Our Server Bre was very professional and attentive to our wants and needs give us to time to catch up with each other then took our drink orders and answered questions about the menu. Jakob kept our water drinks filled plus helped with bringing out the hors d'oeuvres which were delicious. Wendy the floor manager stopped by to say hello and check on the birthday girl which I appreciated. Dinner dishes started to arrive and Wow what a work of art, great presentations on every dish and everyone tasting the other's dinner so you know it was a great choice to dine here! This place has really lost the quality that made it a favorite, especially since the early Taco Tuesdays. When they first opened, they seemed to genuinely value both their customers and the quality of their food. As they've become more popular, it feels like those standards have slipped. The guacamole used to be thick, fresh, and flavorful--exactly how good guacamole should be. Now it has a watered-down texture that makes me wonder if it's being mixed with squash or zucchini instead of being made primarily with avocado. The taco meat has also become noticeably greasier than it used to be. It's disappointing because this used to be my go-to spot. Also, chips and salsa are complementary, but we had to ask for them and the chips were brought out without salsa; we waited for the salsa as we were told it would be right out, but we waited and waited until we had to ask again. We got the salsa flight to start off. It comes with Salsa Llorona, Salsa Toreado, Salsa Lorenza, Avocado Salsa Verde. I love spicy and oh boy, their spiciest one definitely packs a punch but is so delicious. The toreado has soy sauce and sesame oil which definitely gives it an Asian twist. I got the street corn tacos which were delicious. As a vegetarian, it is hard to find good veggie tacos and I very much enjoyed these. super flavorful. My husband got the Baja shrimp tacos and the ribeye tacos. He thought his were okay, the shrimp were better than the ribeye. Came on a Friday for date night. Loved the ambiance. Service was great. Our server Brian C. was very eager to serve and help us. It was kind of funny. We ordered the salsa sampler and it was amazing. I loved the uniqueness of the salsa toreado. I couldn't stop eating it, even when my mouth became on fire. The weeping salsa was also delicious, but made my mouth burn. The other two salsas were yummy and more mild. For my main meal, I got the mole enchiladas. The Mole was delicious! I wanted more, not because I was hungry, but because it tasted that good. Their margaritas were tasty as well and had, in my opinion, the right amount of alcohol. Not too strong, but not weak. Definitely recommend for drinks with friends or even a date night. This restaurant is part of downtown Claremont, connecting with the same plaza as Phil's Coffee. There is a tiny lot for them, but for the majority, you'd have to find street parking which is absolutely horrific in a Friday night. I've luckily found parking on the street near the entrance. Upon walking in, you'd be amazed at the decor and interior it's beautiful whether you sit inside or outside of the patio. It's dimly lit, giving a sophisticated ambiance. I've been here twice, but each time, the servers mention only being able to sit there for 2 hours. They do have a bar area which encompasses the entire building, which is nice. They have happy hour which I've had their tacos and beers. I usually get their IPAs for $6 in happy hour days (from 3 - 6 PM). Food here is decent and not too bad. Drinks are great for their prices. Chips are refillable and their salsa is always refreshing. My rating stems from service and comfortability. The servers here tend to feel disingenuous with their service. They seemed forced to smile and don't want to be doing their job. I feel uncomfortable and can't quite explain what it is. Again, I've only been here twice, but I truly never think about coming here; I only come because of work outings. If I didn't need to, I probably wouldn't step foot in this place. This is a very modern hip place. Definitely a place to celebrate your birthday at, or come with girlfriends to their amazing happy hour! We started out with traditional fresh Guacamole and fresh chips. I will stress and repeat, the chips not only looked fresh but they tasted fresh! And, they were not greasy! The guacamole had a good blend of flavors, it was good! My main order was their house salad with chicken. The chicken was moist, very well seasoned and delicious! The salad had fresh chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, romaine lettuce..It's served with lime vinaigrette and yes, dressing was well balanced. I also ordered a Carajillo to drink. The best way to describe this drink is comparing it to an Espresso Martini without the Espresso. This was delicious!! I recommend trying. Came for a late lunch in May without a reservation and were able to get a spot on the patio when it wasn't too crowded. Happy hour specials were available for à la carte tacos and guacamole. Needed a little salt. Ordered the queso fundido with chirozo. Came with 3 tortillas. It was very good. Not greasy and full of flavor. Also ordered the tortilla soup. Not traditional but tasty. Not a chicken broth. More akin to tomato soup with a chili base. Lots of shredded chicken and crispy tortilla strips with a few chunks of avocado. One slice of lime. Tried it with and without the lime. Definitely use the lime. I ordered the ahi tuna tostadas. Quality tuna and delicious Baja sauce. Would order again but not great enough to come back just for that. My son has the three taco plate with all toppings in the side. We asked for one taco costra style so he could try it and the other two plain. Waitress repeated the order correctly so it was the kitchen staff that messed that up. He liked the plain taco but left the 2 tortillas that were costra style (cheese grilled on the tortilla). Ate all the meat. He loved it. Hubby had the combo plate with 2 enchiladas and a beef taco. He liked it but was not a fan of the rice and beans. Added an order of the quesabirria tacos. Again, tasty but not rock your world level. Overall if you're into booze you're going to love this place. We aren't drinkers and have a kid so not our usual style. She suggested the $25 combo platter, and we both got it. Let me tell you, in this neighborhood, in this economy?? $25 for three tacos or enchiladas of ANY KIND on their menu?? What?? It also comes with beans and rice! So I got the Elote taco, the fried Mahi taco and the shrimp enchilada, all were and I will not sleep on the beans and rice in this review, they were perfect. If your beans and rice are mediocre, you have NO BUSINESS running a Mexican restaurant, but this place is legit. Not Gonna Lie I consider Mexican food in Claremont to be a gamble (see: Espiaus) but La Popular delivers. My one critique is that the enchiladas are tiny, and the tortillas for the tacos are tinier still, and they did not skimp on the portions, so my hands got kinda messy, so if they could up their tortilla circumference, this would be a perfect review with zero nit-pick. We were seated outside, and the patio setup was lovely. They have great overhead heaters and a beautiful fire pit that would make such a nice spot for a date night with drinks. We started with the salsa tray and a few specialty cocktails, including the Oaxacan Jellyfish, the Chile Pineapple Mango Margarita, and the Carajillo. The drinks were good, though definitely on the sweeter side. For our entrées, we ordered a burrito topped with suizas salsa, the Baja tacos, and the carnitas tacos. I absolutely loved the burrito. The portion was very generous, and the sauce on top really completed the dish. Everyone at the table was happy with their meals and portions, and the pickled onions were especially delicious. We also ordered the churros for dessert. They were fresh and perfectly crunchy, served with caramel and chocolate dipping sauces that paired so well. Fun spot! It is very moody inside but the staff is friendly. It was VERY hard to hear my friends and the waiter though. Also the hostess couldn't find my reservation on their Open Table system even though I saw it and had it open on my app and the date and time were correct. Had the chicken tinga 3 taco plate and the salsa platter. Your experience may vary as I had this meal delivered and did not eat at the restaurant. The food tastes pretty good. I rank this place above average in terms of taste. I subtract points because the value is simply lacking. The tacos were incredibly tiny and I felt hungry despite finishing the taco plate. Each taco can be devoured in three bites. To put this into context, when I go to a typical restaurant I am usually only able to finish half of my entree. It's rare that I am left wanting more. The salsa platter is quite a rip off. Four tiny cups of different salsas and a large pile of tortilla chips. I'd rather have more salsa and fewer chips. I can get salsa for free at most places just by asking. To be fair, I enjoyed the unique pickled red onion salsa and found it to be an excellent topping for the tacos. Simply put, there is no shortage of good Mexican food in Southern California, especially in the IE or LA. The ribeye was cooked perfectly with the pickled onions on top and I saved some of the guacamole to add onto the tacos... it made it a 10/10 taco! I ordered a butter cake which was pretty good. I gave it a 8.8/10. The combination of the butter cake and ice cream was good! Now the adult beverages... I got 3 Mexican candy shots and they were pretty good. A little too sweet for my liking but overall much better than most places that serve candy shots. The margarita was average but not watered down, unlike other establishments that try to jip you. I also ordered a Perla (not seen in pictures) and it wasn't very good. Very bitter for my liking and won't order it again. Bernice was nice enough to bring out some ice cream for my friend whose birthday it was and it was pretty good. Like I said earlier, if you come here, ask for Bernice. Sweet girl and very accommodating. To wrap this review up, I would like to say that my experience at La Popular was very very great. I will 100% be coming back here VERY SOON. This place seems like a hidden gem tucked away in Claremont village. I'm very happy that I came here and every dollar spent was well worth it. read more
