We've come to La Popular several times now for happy hour and Taco Tuesdays, and we've really enjoyed it! My favorite is the ribeye and corn tacos, they're so flavorful. The Queso Fundido with chorizo is also one of the best! The live band entertainment on Tuesdays changes weekly, which keeps things fun and exciting. Unfortunately, there wasn't a band last Tuesday, but these things happen. Taco Tuesdays can get crowded very quickly, so I definitely recommend making reservations, especially for parties of four or more. Indoor seating fills up fast, and you may be left with outdoor seating. During hot weather, the patio can feel quite humid, and the outdoor chairs can become uncomfortable after sitting for a while. Service is decent and about what you'd expect when the restaurant is busy. Overall, we enjoy coming here with friends for the food, happy hour, and lively atmosphere. read more

Very hip and modern place to grab a bite in Claremont. For a 6pm dinner the wait was starting . They have a nice cocktail menu and do have happy hour specials at certain times . The service was attentive, recieved recommendations and the communication between lunch break/shift change was great . Went with the Baja shrimp tacos that were lightly fried but grilled is also an option . The Chipotle sauce was good, and the size of the tacos were filling with 3 . They also have an outdoor patio for seating which on cooler evenings look appealing. The crowd is a nice mix of college, families and people looking to have a nice evening . I've kept passing by here and finally got a chance to try it out with some friends :) They recommended that I try the Ribeye Tacos, and they did not disappoint!! I'm not gonna lie, I usually get my tacos plain (meat and tortilla only) but this time I decided to be brave and try them with the guacamole and pickled onions that they come with. I did have the pico de gallo removed though haha. And I actually really enjoyed how flavorful everything was with each bite! I would definitely order them like that again! My wife and I came here for date night with a couple of friends last night and we absolutely loved our visit at La Popular. They played great music without it being overwhelmingly loud. The decor is very chic and upscale, perfect for date night. The staff were great. We didn't have a reservation and were still able to get seated fairly quickly. We came in at a little shy of 8pm. Our server Dom was great. He had a great personality. Very professional but had a warm and inviting personality. He gave us great recommendations and made sure we were taken care of throughout the entire evening. The food was great. My wife and I shared the ahi tuna tostadas for an appetizer and had the carne asada plate as our entree. Both really tasty. We paired our meal with a Oaxaca Old Fashioned and Hibiscus Margarita. We got the salsa flight to start off. It comes with Salsa Llorona, Salsa Toreado, Salsa Lorenza, Avocado Salsa Verde. I love spicy and oh boy, their spiciest one definitely packs a punch but is so delicious. The toreado has soy sauce and sesame oil which definitely gives it an Asian twist. I got the street corn tacos which were delicious. As a vegetarian, it is hard to find good veggie tacos and I very much enjoyed these. super flavorful. The vibe is pretty intimate with dark lighting and the bar is in the center. It took a while for us to be seated as nobody was at the hostess booth. Came on a Friday for date night. Loved the ambiance. Service was great. Our server Brian C. was very eager to serve and help us. It was kind of funny. We ordered the salsa sampler and it was amazing. I loved the uniqueness of the salsa toreado. I couldn't stop eating it, even when my mouth became on fire. The weeping salsa was also delicious, but made my mouth burn. This restaurant is part of downtown Claremont, connecting with the same plaza as Phil's Coffee. There is a tiny lot for them, but for the majority, you'd have to find street parking which is absolutely horrific in a Friday night. I've luckily found parking on the street near the entrance. Upon walking in, you'd be amazed at the decor and interior it's beautiful whether you sit inside or outside of the patio. It's dimly lit, giving a sophisticated ambiance. I've been here twice, but each time, the servers mention only being able to sit there for 2 hours. They do have a bar area which encompasses the entire building, which is nice. They have happy hour which I've had their tacos and beers. I usually get their IPAs for $6 in happy hour days (from 3 - 6 PM). Food here is decent and not too bad. Drinks are great for their prices. Chips are refillable and their salsa is always refreshing. My rating stems from service and comfortability. The servers here tend to feel disingenuous with their service. They seemed forced to smile and don't want to be doing their job. I feel uncomfortable and can't quite explain what it is. Again, I've only been here twice, but I truly never think about coming here; I only come because of work outings. If I didn't need to, I probably wouldn't step foot in this place. Not a chicken broth. More akin to tomato soup with a chili base. Lots of shredded chicken and crispy tortilla strips with a few chunks of avocado. One slice of lime. Tried it with and without the lime. Definitely use the lime. I ordered the ahi tuna tostadas. Quality tuna and delicious Baja sauce. Would order again but not great enough to come back just for that. My son has the three taco plate with all toppings in the side. We asked for one taco costra style so he could try it and the other two plain. Waitress repeated the order correctly so it was the kitchen staff that messed that up. He liked the plain taco but left the 2 tortillas that were costra style (cheese grilled on the tortilla). Ate all the meat. He loved it. Hubby had the combo plate with 2 enchiladas and a beef taco. He liked it but was not a fan of the rice and beans. Added an order of the quesabirria tacos. It also comes with beans and rice! So I got the Elote taco, the fried Mahi taco and the shrimp enchilada, all were and I will not sleep on the beans and rice in this review, they were perfect. If your beans and rice are mediocre, you have NO BUSINESS running a Mexican restaurant, but this place is legit. Not Gonna Lie I consider Mexican food in Claremont to be a gamble (see: Espiaus) but La Popular delivers. My one critique is that the enchiladas are tiny, and the tortillas for the tacos are tinier still, and they did not skimp on the portions, so my hands got kinda messy, so if they could up their tortilla circumference, this would be a perfect review with zero nit-pick. Also the hostess couldn't find my reservation on their Open Table system even though I saw it and had it open on my app and the date and time were correct. I've eaten here a couple of times. The last time I came in it was to enjoy their taco Tuesday with some friends. When you arrive, there is a hostess stand right by the door. Be sure to check in there. They are often busy on the weekends, so you may have a little bit of a wait. We had a vegetarian among us, and she was able to enjoy some of their menu items. When they first opened, they seemed to genuinely value both their customers and the quality of their food. As they've become more popular, it feels like those standards have slipped. The guacamole used to be thick, fresh, and flavorful--exactly how good guacamole should be. Now it has a watered-down texture that makes me wonder if it's being mixed with squash or zucchini instead of being made primarily with avocado. The taco meat has also become noticeably greasier than it used to be. It's disappointing because this used to be my go-to spot.
