We stopped here on our way to Madison from MN and we were not disappointed! My husband and I both had chimichangas. Beef for me, vegetarian for him. Walking in, I was excited this place may actually be one of the decent restaurants in BRF. The decor is festive & authentic, and clearly a lot of effort was put into it. After being seated, chips & salsa were served immediately and they were delicious. Unfortunately the positive review ends there. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas next. The pitcher came with a bunch of lemons in it, NO ICE, nor was their ice in the warm glasses brought with it. Yum. Our entrees came and we immediately tasted that the cheese they used in both our dishes was mozzarella, and the red enchilada sauce may as well have been marinara. Do not buy their gift certificates...they put a one time use stamp on them so you do not get change back. We had a 50 dollar gift certificate from friends and our bill was 39 dollars. They refused to give us the 11 dollars back or mark the gift card as partially used. They said the only thing we could do was order something more to go. The manager claimed to call the owner who supposedly lived upstairs, but, she refused to come talk to us. Not going back. Beware of this business. I stopped in earlier this evening, staying nearby during a cross-country drive. The place was warm and inviting, brightly decorated with countless iconic Mexican images carved into the furniture. High sounding reviewers from elite Mexican outposts may think that the food here is not authentic, but with the diaspora of Mexicans all around the U.S., there are mom and pop places opening in every nook and cranny and each has as much claim to authenticity as does any other restaurant run by a Mexican family. Black River Falls is lucky to have such a place. My wife and I had tamales and enchiladas and we've eaten them all around Mexico and Texas for 23 years. I had lunch here at 12:30. On the lunch menu, the had "Fajita Taco Salad" for $8.99. So I ordered "Fajita Taco Salad". It was delicious. However when the bill arrived, I was charged for the dinner "Fajita Taco Salad" for $12.99. I didn't even see this item listed on the menu because I only looked at the lunch menu. I asked the server why my meal was not $8.99 and she said that she rang it in for the dinner price. I explained that it is lunch - I ordered off the lunch menu - I had no idea there was dinner item with the same name - and the server never asked me if I wanted the lunch or dinner "Fajita Taco Salad". The server and manager both REFUSED to give me the lunch price! Very poor service that I had to pay for THEIR mistake by not asking me if I wanted the lunch salad or the dinner one (that I didn't even know existed)! I will never return. It's been a long time since I've visited Cinco de Mayo. I have to say I was disappointed in my dinner. I ordered the Chile Verde. It was very salty (as pork is salty already) and the pork had a lot of fat on it. I understand the fat is was gives any meat its flavor but this meat had too much fat on. I am hoping this was a one time experience as Cinco de Mayo is the only Mexican Restaurant in this area. Chips and salsa are good tho. read more

Wow, where do I begin? First ill say I didn't have high expectations for authentic mexican in black river falls but what I encountered turned out to be far worse than I imagined. I had a margarita that tasted like syrup on the rocks. After waiting for about forty minutes I got my burrito if you can call it that. It was a soggy tortilla filled with ground beef completely devoid of the most basic seasoning......that's it. Maybe their interpretation of a burrito is just ground beef but this was the first time I've seen it and hope it's the last. I've never had a bad meal here, and I can't say the same for the majority of the other restaurants in the area. I usually get fajitas or quesadillas. The portions are big and you always have food to take home for another meal. I've taken family and friends here and they've always enjoyed the food too. Great tasting authentic Mexican food served up by authentic Mexican waitstaff. :) People from bigger cities may find the food lesser in quality than what they are used to, but this place really fills a niche in this one-horse town that was used to fast-food Mexican like Taco Bell and Taco John's before Cinco arrived. There is a Mexican place in Tomah that we have tried and Cinco De Mayo beats it easily with fresher food. Servings are huge and the price is right. Service is variable though. Sometimes they are very good, other times a bit slow. In other words, sometimes you are waited on by Speedy Gonzales, sometimes by his cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez. We have ate their numerous times and only one time did the food seem to have sat awhile before Slowpoke brought it to us. Most of the time Slowpoke is just a bit slow at offering drink refills because he is caught up in watching his favorite show on the Spanish TV network they have playing on the TV. I tend to overlook this since the pace is very casual and laid back - or maybe they are just lucky that I have never been in a hurry when we have dined there. The great food wins out over the times when Slowpoke is our waiter. I will add that we typically dine there on weekday evenings when there are fewer people dining anyhow. Their service may be much better on busier weekends. You are served warm tortilla chips and two homemade salsa/dipping sauces to snack on while waiting for your food to arrive. They also have a bar for serving up mixed drinks or beer. They offer a vast selection of lunches, dinners, combo meals, and appetizers. Their refried beans are the best I've had anywhere - highly recommend that you try them! Their location is not the best due to no parking that allows easy access. Parking is only available behind the building or across a very busy street that needs to be crossed with no crosswalk handily available. If you park in back, you must walk through an alley to access the front door. This is not an issue for us, but I feel they may be limiting their customer base by not having easy, close parking for elderly or disabled people. read more
