I came here on a Sunday evening for dinner and was seated right away. The service was pretty prompt! We ordered a small guacamole, and chips and salsa came free. The guacamole was a pretty good consistency, but could use more seasoning/salt. The salsa was more of a tomato sauce consistency, which isn't my favorite personally. I ordered the steak enchiladas verdes, which came with rice and refried beans. The portion was good, but I didn't know the steak was a $1 upcharge, which isn't a huge deal I guess. My boyfriend got the 3 tacos entree with carne asada, onions/cilantro and a small guacamole dip came on the side, plus rice and beans. The drink special was a mexican mule (tequila-based), which was super refreshing and $6.99! I don't think we would be "regulars" here, but we were overall happy with our meal and glad to try a new spot for us! read more

What a fun place to be to enjoy Taco Tuesday there is street parking available out front and a lot around the way. We were greeted and sat rather quickly for a 7pm evening the place was fairly busy. The waitress came over and took our drink order. We decided on the ultimate classic margaritas in a tequila tower. Oh yes you heard me! It was epic. Strange that when she brought us cups it didn't come with ice. I understand the tower came with ice but it's not dispensed with ice soooooo why would you not bring a cup with ice to drink from?!?! Strange. So the entire night we kept asking for ice. Outside if that the meals came out hot and tasted delicious..I enjoyed the quesabirrias tacos and they were delicious. I used the restroom as well while I was there. The floor was sticky ( I believe because the product used was not diluted properly ) but the restroom was overall clean. I had a lovely time here! We had a huge party of about 17 people and they did a great job serving us. We sat in the upstairs area and our waiter did a great job going up and down the stairs constantly. The place is very colorful and the chairs each have their own image on them. I enjoyed my margarita! It was big and I could taste the liquor but not so much it was killer. The frozen version was a bit sweeter but good as well (watch out for that brain-freeze). The restaurant was very accommodating to requests we had on some of the meals we ordered. I got the pollo supremo which I've never seen on any other Mexican restaurant. It's chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce and it's is so so so good! Every time I come to Michigan I have to have it! The birria tacos looked great but sad they did not come with any consommé. Good Mexican food but overpriced in my opinion. The burrito was big but $18 is steep. First basket of chips and salsa was free, after that they charge you (according to the menu). The interior is what you'd expect with brightly colored chairs, paintings on the wall.pretty spacious. The have quite a few menu items. Complimentary basket of chips and salsa, both rather underwhelming for flavor. I requested a hotter sauce, which I added to the first salsa. 12oz draft dos equios in chilled mug $4.49. Not many of the dishes come with rice and beans...if it isn't noted with the menu item, they're not included. Decided on the flautas because they cam with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and guacomle. I asked the waiter for his recommendation between chicken or beef tips, he said chicken. The flautas were larger than what I've seen from other Mexican restaurants, they also had some sort of cheese sauce over them, which I thought took away from the crunchy flautas shell. Solid Mexican food right here in my hometown! I usually go for fajitas or street tacos or even a spicy burrito now and then. Tonight I had the Carno Sonora and it was awesome! Well seasoned skirt steak with refereed beans and cactus. So yum! The service is always top notch - friendly, eager to help with selections and perfect timing with refills and tasty chips and salsa. While this may not be my first pick if I want something healthy, it is definitely what comes to mind when I'm craving Mexican food. I love that it's right downtown Rockford, and I love the ambience of the space (when dine-in is an option). The ceilings in the dining area are high, making the space feel larger and brighter. The bar side has lower ceilings, and is a little quieter and more intimate. The upstairs space is wonderful for eating outside in the summer, or catering for larger groups. (I attended a rehearsal dinner in the upstairs a few years back and it was great!). I also adore the murals and décor of the restaurant. They are bright, feel traditional, and the murals depict scenes from places in Mexico. I'm possibly biased since many of the scenes are from the area I studied abroad. The menu is quite large, and I think they do a good job of offering some more traditional Mexican dishes with more Tex-Mex or Americanized versions. They also have things like cheeseburgers and fries, though I'm not sure why anyone would order those at a Mexican restaurant. If you get a chance to dine-in they have a good bar selection as well. There are fewer Mexican beers than I would expect, though I think their margaritas are more popular. The service is not usually very quick, but they are pleasant. If you aren't in a hurry, and don't mind taking some extra time to enjoy the company of the group you are with it's not a problem. If you know you are on a timeline make sure to mention that up front. We just ordered takeout for the first time, and I'm really glad we did! I really wanted their rice and beans, so we decided to try their take away (since there is no dine-in allowed). My husband and I both ordered the Southwest Chimichangas. One of my favorites! I wondered how the portions would be as take away since they are usually served on huge plates. I was not disappointed! The containers are large, still include 2 chimichangas (yay, leftovers!), and I really appreciate that the lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole were packaged separately. They also included a bag of chips! Ordering online was very easy, you pay using PayPal, and our order was ready for pickup less than 15 minutes after ordering! I will definitely order take away from them again while dine-in is not allowed, and look forward to when we can visit again for dine-in. read more

First night out after some pretty major surgery for my wife . We went on a Monday and there's not many places open on Monday anymore so kudos to them . Staff was friendly and accommodating asking how they could help w seating to make my wife comfortable. You know you can always go get Americanized bland Mexican food, at high prices, with unpleasant staff, from a chain that doesn't do anything in their community. Such a disappointment! No matter how many people at the table, Cinco de Mayo has an upcharge for extra tortilla chips and an additional upcharge for more salsa. The upcharge for shrimp on one small taco was $2.50. Only 1 single dried-out lime wedge was provided for 3 tacos with an upcharge for additional lime wedges. Cinco de Mayo uses 7-up in their "classic" Margarita which overpowers any of the tartness in a classic Margarita. All questions from patrons must go thru the 1 staff member who spoke fluent English. Even tho we were ahead of dinner crowd and restaurant was empty, service was extremely slow . All the employees appeared unhappy to be working. We came here for my daughters birthday considering Covid in mind. They had a downloadable menu that was convenient for everyone. If you don't have a phone I am sure they have a menu. We always enjoy this Mexican restaurant, it is as close to home as we can get. Arizona was home. We have tried many places but they have the best food. The margarita was also the best I have ever had. The nacho supreme was a starter which had beef and was delicious. We also were given chips and salsa and was mild for everyone's liking. We had fajitas and shrimp delight and carne asada and it was all delicious. We always enjoy take out. This is the first time we have gone to a sit down restaurant since Covid started and it was clean and inviting. I forgot to take photos before we already ate some of it but we had a lot left over. I find most Cinco de Mayo's or El Burritto's are very much alike. Same menu's and food quality... Food at this location is in line with other locations- we very much enjoy it. LOVE the salsa! Chips are awesome, too. Can't beat the fajitas, my favorite! The ones with chorizo, shrimp, mushroom, & chicken are SO good. Queso dip is DELISH, too. This location is located on the outskirts of downtown Rockford... lot out back or street parking out front. Have never had an issue getting seated right away. Service is always friendly and accommodating. Food always comes out quick and HOT. Good Mexican option for the area! We are fans and will be back. read more

The chips and salsa arrived before our server! 2 tables that were seated after us got their drinks and food out in prior to our server mentioning he would be with us only to wait longer. Finally we got our order in right as the other tables received their food. When we spoke to the manager about the less than stellar service she could have cared less. Ugh. I am trying to support local, non chain restaurants during the current lock down. We ordered fajitas tonight along with some nachos, chips & salsa. Got it home and no tortillas for the fajitas. A tiny little salsa , not nearly enough for one person let alone for fajitas, chips/salsa, and nachos. We called the restaurant to let them know of our missing salsas and tortillas and they simply said, 'thanks for letting us know.' Sigh. This is all you are doing right now...take out. You have to make sure you have everything in the bag at least. The food was average. For the money, the lack of flavor or commitment to getting their customers everything they ordered...I would say skip it. There are lots of restaurants hustling and taking care of customers so they can survive COVID. Those are the restaurants that will get my business. read more

The food is ok. The one thing that blew my mind was the extremely high prices. I got an Enchilada plate which was $17.99. My partner got 3 tacos which were 10.99. All of the prices on the menu were very high. We need to keep this in mind with inflation going crazy. We can't allow these places to raise prices so high, or inflation will never slow down. There were quite a few people there eating though. It was the last day of Art Prize. I just wonder how they draw people in during regular times with such high prices? I'm not saying don't go there. I feel everyone should try it, and make up there own minds. The service was fine and friendly, but when you go out to eat you have to understand by the time you pay the high price of the food, then drinks, then add tax and to top it all off add the tip of 20%, that makes for quite a price tag. The nachos supreme with beef and beans I ordered didn't have any cheese. On the nachos. No cheese. Really?! Again...now I remember why I stopped ordering from here. They kept screwing up our orders. "Ate" there for lunch this afternoon, I literally ate two bites of my burrito. I asked the waitress to take it off my bill and I told her that the meat tasted old and very watery. My partner had good food and was happy with his food but his had shrimp and not beef or chicken. The waitress had the nerve to bring back my bill and tell me "Next time don't eat half of it or else we will charge you." We we're disgusted that she would say such a thing. I ate hardly an inch into that burrito and only ate the shell around it. We are great tippers and it takes a lot for us to complain. I'm really glad I took a photo so I can share it to all the other sites I can. El Burrito apparently is the same chain and we have good experiences at the Beltline location usually so this was surprising. All would have been well if she didn't say anything, but in once sentence she made the situation so much worse. There clearly won't be a "NEXT TIME." So rude! And so wrong! Poor at best. I really don't like to write a negative review, but after another disappointing experience at Cinco de Mayo in Rockford, I'm compelled to do so. We dined here a few years ago and were not impressed so haven't been back since. Last night we decided to give it another try hoping our first visit was a one-off bad experience. Wow, were we wrong. I ordered the three taco meal: one pork taco and two chicken. The taco's arrived totally cold, with very little meat, and taco shells that looked and tasted like something you'd buy at Meijer. Not authentic, not fresh, not good! The tacos had absolutely no taste, and I couldn't tell the difference between the pork taco and the chicken tacos. My wife ordered a steak quesadilla, which they forgot to make! Once it arrived it was obvious they threw it together quickly in the kitchen as it was brought out sloppily made and the cheese inside wasn't even melted all the way. She ended up eating about half of it. So, for three poorly made, cold, tasteless taco's, and a slapped together, under cooked quesadilla our bill was almost $26.00. As for the service, they seemed to have plenty of staff working, however our waitress was mostly absent and only returned toward the end of our meal to ask if we needed refills or anything else. The best part of this meal was the two glasses of water we ordered. I'm sorry to be negative, but this was an unacceptable experience and a total waste of money. As Rockford residents we remain frustrated that our little town doesn't have really great dining options. read more

Not my favorite Mexican food. But better than some. However, there are very non-American Mexican foods on the menu if you dare be a food adventurer. My Anthony Bourdain worshipping son tried tongue tacos. Ok, warning...these smell. And not good. Our deal was he had to eat one no matter what. He doesn't want tongue again. :) I had fantastic tamales here though! Really delicious. I'd go again and concentrate on their tamales. The chicken flautas were good too. It's hit or miss depending on what you order. The menu is huge. Perhaps they could condense their offerings so that they concentrate on making some things particularly well. 6-8 page menus are overkill. Wait staff are all extremely nice. I note many diners treating them sub humanly because English is not their first language. They do take special orders (despite other reviewers) and accommodate to what you desire, just try asking politely. They always get the orders 100% correctly, and the food comes amazingly fast, even during busy times. The Dos XX beer special is great. It is HUGE and very inexpensive. I love the salsa because it has a lot of fresh cilantro. I don't see that enough in salsa. read more

The only thing authentic here was the music. I just moved to Rockford and I've been so bummed there is no good Mexican food to be offered. Definitely have to go to the holes in the wall in downtown GR for good Mexican. In fact, the sketchier looking the better. This place wasn't as horrible as El Haragan, but it just wasn't good either. However my 11 yr old loved the tacos soooo that's a bonus. ***also I have to say the seating is actually pretty bad like others have mentioned. Especially if you're a bigger person, you will not fit into the booths. I am average size but I'm 9 months pregnant and my poor belly was squished!
