I didn't realize the traffic was going to be as bad as it was, however, I did call to let them know I was going to be late. There is a grace period but I didn't know how strict or not they were about it. I get to my appointment and right away, it's not a friendly and welcoming vibe. The person at the front (who was different than the one I had seen earlier the week before) and the person who worked on my hair seemed like they didn't want to be there at all and it showed. Bottom line - not worth it. I love treating and pampering myself, and this experience was quite frankly - awful. At times, it was actually painful because she just didn't care and was pulling my hair. I actually held my breath at times because I thought she was going to burn me with the hair tool. The one I went to was a head spa, but a Chinese one. This one is Japanese and has the same features as what I have been reading about in Japan. So they start out with a scalp review, showing you how bad your scalp is. Like last time, I had a lot of buildup. I was offered more treatment for dandruff, dry scalp and didn't take the upsell for more treatment. Then I'm led into a dim room and offered a chair. They add a protective layer so I don't get wet, and cover my in a soft blanket and an eye mask. The process of washing my hair with various water and products was similar as the other head spa, but here my scalp was focused on 90%, whereas the Chinese one did a facial more than my scalp. After the head spa, I paid extra for them to dry my hair. I don't think it was worth the $45 but I wanted to pamper my mom so I splurged. They said they offer hair dryers so I guess you could DIY. 3 head spa with an added blow out came to $495. Tip was paid in cash. My mother commented that her hair felt so soft and luxurious. That's worth the money right there.

TLDR: 3 not great experiences with Ashley, including her recording without me knowing, her being…read morelate, and then her canceling on me unexpectedly hours before an appointment and then charging ME a cancellation fee. Longer version: I found Ashley on socials and booked a new client appointment. She had me follow a bunch of rules: come in with no product in hair, no detangling, and completely dry. She was late to the appointment and I called/texted/DMed to no avail. Eventually, she did text me and let me know that she would be there. In that first appointment, we did a treatment and a wash and go. She also walked me through different products and how to style my hair. I was new in my wash n go journey and she told me to text her when I'm buying my products and to keep her updated on my hair journey. She asked me to write a 5 star review on the spot and to give her any feedback in-person instead of in a review. She tried to convince me to book a haircut, however I wasn't prepared to pay for a curly cut on the spot, but she did convince me to go ahead and still leave a 5 star review and book another wash and go. In the second appointment, it was pretty simple. We did a wash n go, and again she tried to upsell me to book a haircut by kind of insulting me about having dry hair and then also had me write a 5 star review again on the spot. She asked about my hair journey, and I told her how I still don't enjoy doing my own hair, but that I am trying my best to follow her instructions and to use the products she recommended me. I texted her ONCE when I bought the products to make sure it was right, as she requested, and ONCE a photo of my own wash n go. I later saw an Instagram post where she posted a recording of a conversation where I mentioned a salon that I'd visited over a year ago for a curly cut. In that video, my eyes are covered because I'm in the shampoo bowl, so I did not know that I was being recorded. I messaged her telling her that I did not give her permission to record me, that the context of the caption was misleading, and asked her to take that video down. It took some back-and-forth, but eventually she did take it down. That's when I noticed some of the before and after photos which I believe to be also misleading. The before photos she calls my hair dry and makes fun of my new growth, failing to mention the fact that I showed up as requested with my hair uncombed, unconditioned, no product and a year out from a cut. My hair was hydrated in the after photo and looks defined, as it does anytime I do a moisture treatment at any of the salons I've been to. Making fun of my hair while bashing another salon I hadn't been to in a year was unnecessary. This year I was going to a wedding and planning to have my hair in an updo. I wanted to support a black salon and the last one I went to was unavailable the week of the wedding. I saw that Ashley's salon is now using a different stylist other than her. I should've listened to my gut and distanced myself from anything related to Ashley from the jump. I booked a simple Wash N Go appointment with the other stylist, figuring that this is a simple appointment and that I wouldn't have too much interaction with Ashley. My plan was to have a wash and go there to define my curls and then put my hair in an updo for the wedding. The day before my appointment, Ashley texted me re-confirming the appointment and saying she was excited to see that I booked. She asked if I've gotten a curly cut before to which I told her yes and then she asked what products this "other" stylist has me using. I'm not sure why she needs that info if I'm just getting a wash n go but before I could even respond, I got a message saying that my appointment had been canceled and I'm charged a late fee for canceling within 72 hours. I thought it was an error given that she had just reconfirmed less than 5 minutes prior. I had to go back-and-forth with the booking company to eventually get my full refund, including that late cancellation fee. She never responded to my text about why I was canceled but she sent me an email mentioning the video that she recorded without my knowledge and said that "we have our choices." She had never previously expressed any issues or concerns with me, and I thought this was very unprofessional. Looking back, this unprofessional behavior is in line with every interaction we've had. I am posting exact screenshots of my conversations with her, so you can see for yourself the way that she speaks to clients. The fact that she charges people for canceling within 72 hours yet does it herself is telling. The fact that she texts me excited about an appointment just to cancel minutes later is crazy. The fact that there are many reviews saying she retaliated against them for giving less than 5 stars and/or sharing constructive feedback is ridiculous. The fact that she recorded my audio conversation while my eyes were covered in the shampoo bowl is asine.

Lots of detail below, but in summary: "Mania" Maya is not familiar with curly/wavy hair texture and I had a painful, demeaning experience as a result of sitting in her chair. This review reflects my experience with her, and not any of the other stylists/staff or salon as a whole. I booked with "Mania" Maya due to seeing her name mentioned positively in past reviews - I'd never been to this salon before, but was looking for a local Drybar-adjacent service to have my hair styled before an international trip. My hair stylist is located in Pasadena, and I wanted a closer service. I have curly/wavy hair - when I let it dry naturally, I brush it after showering but not again until I'm ready to wash it. I scrunch it up to encourage the curl. That being said, I arrived with my wavy hair that hadn't been brushed. Upon arrival, Maya asked if we were washing my hair (which was part of the service I selected, so I thought it strange that she asked). When it was clear she wasn't going to brush my hair before washing it, I asked for a brush to do it myself. I rushed to brush it which inevitably still left some tangles. Maya washed my hair and immediately began brushing it without applying any detangling product. This led to one of the worst knots I've ever had, which she readily insisted we had to cut. I had to advocate to work on pulling the hair apart myself, and asked for product to be applied. She did not try to apply product first, she did not insist on trying to preserve what we could of my hair, I as the client had to do this. I would've lost a larger portion of my hair otherwise. She tried telling me it was okay because it was in the back of my head, and wouldn't be seen. I have never had any issues getting my hair done before, and I told her this. She asked me if I brush my hair everyday, which leads me to believe she is not familiar with curly hair. She insisted detangling product would not allow the style to last (which may/may not be true, but clearly I needed some product). She lectured me on how to keep my hair hydrated, how I should style it/sleep in it when I leave it natural, and shook her head every time she encountered another knot. She later asked me how old I was, which given the context, felt condescending. As if I must be too young to understand how to care for my hair. She didn't explain why she asked my age. Honestly, with how long and painful it was to try to reduce the knot, I was debating on leaving with wet hair. I was dismayed. I stayed for the full service, but would have to be a masochist to ever return to her chair. Another note, though less important, is that I was never offered water or anything to drink. I heard another stylist offer a client this, which makes me believe it should be normal here. Again, this review is reflective of my experience with this particular stylist and is not a reflection of any others. I cannot recommend Maya.

Diana did an updo for me for a wedding, and she absolutely nailed it. She was fun, friendly, and really took the time to ask questions to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. Somehow she made it look like I had twice the amount of hair, and it lasted flawlessly all night. On my way out, I asked about getting false eyelashes, and Mia was able to squeeze me in (lifesaver!). She picked the perfect lashes, then went above and beyond by doing my brows and eyeliner too. Everything looked perfect and really pulled my whole look together. The whole salon has such a fun, upbeat vibe, and everyone there was incredibly accommodating. they get my highest recommendation!
