I came here with a friend for a double feature on a Thursday. My friend got us the tickets ahead of time. However, I noted that in the future I can get them since they offer a military discount. Score! There are plenty of options for food and drink while here. A variety of things to drink include cider, beer and wine. Plus non alcoholic drinks like soda and water. Food wise it's popcorn and candy. They have a policy which does allow for outside food. Be sure to check the website FAQ about that. Parking is tough but can be found on side streets for free. The seats here are just meh. My back and butt we're definitely feeling it but note I have back issues. read more

It is a wonderful experience to watch Disney movies on the big screen with other families & practice the movie-going experience in a safe & friendly environment. I LOVE WRITING THIS KIND OF REVIEW! My one previous time going here was in 2014 - it was the first AND last time. Genuinely a dear friend invites me to Night of the Demons with a Q and A with Ben Henson FX master from Night of the Demons, Tremors, Bride of Re-Animator...tons of us movie nerd flicks. I mean...she had me at demons and popcorn... I genuinely took a deep breath, grabbed my ticket online (good thing since this sold out much to the dismay of the sweet couple in front of me). I knew I had "issue" with this place and had written something pretty scathing (which is genuinely rare for me) but I honestly just wanted to have a great time with my friend, go back here without judgement and I am so glad. I actually took out cash remembering that they did not take cards and something but again, not looking hardly and the website doesn't say WE TAKE CARDS but I seem to remember something weird. There was a line for snacks...of course - lots of choices, delicious freaking popcorn with the vegan option for all my vegan friends...beers for you Portland. And wow, they take cards...ok, the gents serving it up were efficient and super nice though the gal who took my ticket was super friendly and welcoming. I kept waiting for the bad to happen. Announcements and the gent who I believe is one of the owners was new - and super fun, just really nice and, of course, nerdy about films. But we had such a great time watching a fun film. I have to share because I was in pain laughing during the movie. The best scene is the Gothy dream girl hosting the funeral home party (I WAS this girl) dancing to Bauhaus 'Stigmata Martyr' which is just mega hot music video and is the one scene with amazing cinematography. So this was their 'VHS Movie Night' which I did not know was a thing but that section of the tape had been rewound and played so much it was VERY damaged. So either someone played this on insane repeat for a club night or, to be fair, this was before porn was more available soooo...either way, bravo for your 1988 lesson is sex. I won't lie to you, as I age, I find SE neighborhood parking less than ideal and I have a car that would fit inside a golf cart! BUT, figure it out and drop into this gem. I will definitely be coming here now that I know how fabulous this place is. Apparently there are new owners! And I swear the seats are way better too... EONS ago I came here (I looked up my review and it was from 2014!) with a handful of other people because they just decided to have a Q and A with Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery and David Della Rocco and then play the Boondock Saints because the gents were in town for comic con.... Yeah, you missed some serious awesome and I think we all just mostly stared at them and them at us. I don't like touching cash and never have it on me. I bought my ticket to the Boondock Saints online using my card and since I had never been there I looked a bit at the website just trying to figure out parking, snacks etc. I get to the theater and they do not take cards and there was no ATM anywhere nearby. The seats were so bad they were actually painful to sit in and there were weird smells in the theater. Like I get old etc but I just read a few lines and flashed back since I tend to not hold on to such things. I actually gave them more stars and said hay, maybe if you don't take cards you add something saying that to your website since that is important info. The owner set up a fake profile to actually attack me online and call me a moron for not knowing they did not take debit cards. SO, with that said - I am so glad that clearly these new owners really treasure this theater. I also loved seeing a packed house of some really wonderful Portland people too. read more

This is easily my favorite theater in Portland. Is it the prettiest? No, but it certainly is not bad. Located in one of my old stomping grounds as a young teen, this location brings back all kinds of nostalgia for me. I never went here as a kid, but went several times as an adult and I feel like I kinda missed out.... They show first run flicks at a reasonable price, offer great service and fresh snacks. The theater has an old school feel to it while sporting maybe the most comfortable movie theater seats in the Portland area. Top off all the things that make me like this place, the owner is an incredibly cool guy too. Met him donating at the Red Cross and was just super impressed by how genuinely nice he is. I've gotten to see dozens of films here that I never would have gotten a chance to see on a big screen otherwise. While Cinemagic likely isn't going to win any "trendiest theater" awards, they instead lean into their old-school identity and I'm here for it. It's a single-theater space, with cheap tickets and concessions, comfortable-ish seats, and a friendly staff. It's always a bit of a crapshoot as to what type of movie their showing, whether that's some indie, a current blockbuster, or a revival. But if it's a movie you want to see and don't need a ton of bells and whistles, they've got you covered. And they're OPEN! Not many theaters are, but last night I was able to go and see the first movie I've watched in a theater in almost a year. That alone is worth celebrating, and they do it safely. Plenty of social distancing (you're nowhere near any other moviegoers) and the staff takes the rules seriously. I look forward to seeing what movie they show next, as I could see myself being a regular during these COVID times. read more

This is an old theatre. It's got old theatre 'charm.' That means ridiculously uncomfortable seats (many of which are broken) and lots of heads blocking your view. But it also means reasonably priced concessions with delicious popcorn that has real butter, lots of beers and ciders on tap, and a cool vibe you just won't get at the big places. I like this place. Come on in and enjoy first/second run films, get some booze on tap, a giant bag of popcorn, and have a good time. Kids allowed at all hours (dammit) and your ass will feel just like it would have if you saw a flick in 1914. read more

The owner is a privileged POS who needs to check himself and how he handles employees. My partner worked there for a few months part-time. Not being there full time and sometimes like one a week, would be conditions that could anyone could forget a certain task or a little part of daily business operations. But over time one would be able to get it - she was not given enough time in my opinion. But in no part did any of the 'issues' he had with her interfere in business operations. She has such a big warm heart and personality- and customers noticed and told her so. After getting along with him initially after being hired all seemed great. But about teo weeks or so, she would tell me that he would show a seemingly pissed off mood all the time. She was unsure about if it was anything to do with her or what. He never communicated anything to her about it. So now days on there was anxiety about going to work and feeling nervous about how he was going to be. Then yesterday she goes to work and he's smoking (which she says he said he quit) and drinking a beer (which he said was n/a) and very obviously pissed about something. I guess he finally told her he has issues with his other job and that's why hes been in a bad mood lately. Ok - so the day went on and as my partners shift get to the end , he sits down and tells her 'I can see that yr heart is not in' working here and 'it's obvious that' she would prefer to work somewhere else. GASLIGHTING. And firing her as people are coming out to order drinks etc! So unprofessional. So petty. NO ONE SHOULD FEEL NERVOUS OR SCARED at work or wherever AND NO COMMUNICATION at all. And to pull this on a POC on Juneteenth. F**K the owner. The rest of the employees are great tho - good people. read more

Do you love local theaters like Laurelhurst, but HATE that they serve beer, take credit cards, and have more than one movie showing at once?! Then CINEMAGIC IS THE THEATER FOR YOU! Cinemagic is a local theatre, that doesn't offer up anything that a "mainstream" theatre doesn't. Oh, and they only take cash, which is already a pet peeve of mine...BUT. An even bigger pet peeve is when a business says something like "don't worry though, we have an ATM!" This makes irks me even MORE than their simply not accepting cards.* Why? Well, the reason that's often given for only accepting cash goes something like this: "the big evil corporate credit card companies take XX cents off of every transaction from us, so we lose some money every time we run your card" So your solution is to install an ATM that charges the CUSTOMER THREE DOLLARS. Way to make me feel sorry for you and then MAKE money off of me. Oh, and the added bonus of your having a convenient ATM (besides your receiving a kick-back on the ATM fees) is that you can have less accountability in your book keeping! Yeah, the customer can only take money out in multiples of $20, that doesn't NECESSARILY mean they spent the money here ;) Ok, maybe I'm just jealous and want to open up my own cash-only business with an ATM I am vested in... Why two stars? The movie was good. I'll never come back here. *Seriously with technology like Square, even *I* could start accepting credit cards! There is no longer any excuse. read more

A solid independent theater. Friendly and efficient staff. Impressive beer selection. They had more than enough taps with some eclectic styles. No fountain soda, only in the bottle or can. Clean theater, reasonably comfortable seats, and old school restrooms. $5 for a Matinee - first run movie. They show one at a time and only open 20 minutes before first showing, so be prepared to stand in line outside. Park on the street - they have a classic marquee. Snacks and Beverage prices seemed fair. Although it was $7 for a small popcorn and a 16z soda. I guess that's fine, the movie was so cheap. $4 for a coke though? read more

we've been going to CineMagic for years and years, it's a great neighborhood theater that hasn't been trendified, yuppified, or homogenized. It's not as run down as a big city theater can get (we only half-joked about wearing flea collars at some of the San Francisco theaters), the prices are super reasonable, and the atmosphere is great. Don't go there looking for the latest technology, super-ergo seats, designer beer (or any beer), or a modern bathroom experience. Anyways, I like it a lot. We can walk there and not have to deal with the usual mall-cinema experience. read more

Location, location, location. Free parking, free parking, free parking. $7 for a first run movie - at a theater that sells beer - is an asset to my neighborhood. I was thrilled that they took credit cards and served decent beer, but they are a bit spendy, considering there are chains in this city that offer the same, for a buck or 2 less. However; Cinemagic is local and much closer to my house. The single theater is fairly large and we were able to get decent seating - even though the place was fairly full. The best thing about the place is that it is located near plenty of restaurants so if you aren't up for popcorn for dinner, you can eat before or after your movie. read more

Remember when you can pay $6.75 for a movie? Remember when popcorn and candy were only a few bucks? Remember when a debit card or credit card didn't exist? Well if you remember that! Then you may like to watch your next flick at Cinemagic! I'm not quite sure how this theatre got it's name, but the place is ***CASH ONLY*** Located off of SE Hawthorne and sorta intersects with SE 20th. This 1940's theatre is quite charming. Parking is on the street and nearby neighborhood streets as well. If you have a student I.D. or you're a senior citizen, there are discounts and your ticket would be a couple bucks cheaper. I came to watch "The Hobbit" with several Yeeps one lovely evening. The seats were quite cushiony and comfy, which was kinda nice for a 3 hour movie we were to endure. It was too comfy for some of us, that they fell asleep through bits and pieces of the movie (I'm not speaking of experience). Although the seats were very comforting, a few may squeak. So if you're the type that fidgets in their seat while watching a movie, you may want a move a seat or two down so you won't irritate your neighbors. In addition, the seats just added cup holders, I'm not too sure how recent that is. Typically this theatre doesn't show the newest flick to date. They wait until a couple months before they show it on the silver screen. But it's nice to know that if there is a huge blockbuster out and about, they they would be showing the film a bit earlier than expected. I'm still glowing because I saw the Dark Knight here the weekend it opened for $4.50. For penny-pinchers like me, this seriously kicked ass. A first-run movie in soft rocking chairs that is uber-close, uber-cheap, and lets you "sneak" in Slurpees and Hot Lips Pizza? Eff yeah! Only downfall is, I wouldn't try to use the bathrooms...they look really cramped, and I think there's only one toilet for each men's and women's. read more

Also, I won't complain about the seats (once again) just because they use real butter on their popcorn and it's only cost $7 to get a popcorn + a drink. Where to begin? The staff were terrible. There could give a damn whether you came or went. They never smiled; barely looked you in the eye. Sort of that, "I'm a cool hipster and you're not so why should I put forth any effort at all." At least that's the impression they gave me. The seats must have been from the 1940s as they squeaked and groaned through the film...which was "The Artist," by the way. My seat actually snapped and then collapsed to one side. I didn't know whether to laugh or be pissed. On the positive side, the prices are good; especially for snacks. So you get what you pay for. It's great for folks on a limited budget who want to see the hottest flicks and not get robbed at the multiplex theatres. I came to see the Muppets and had a great time. I don't get Portland Yelpers. People in Portland always go off about having to shop and spend local and then they get pissy that they don't get fancy treatment from an independent business. 1. Cash Only - Hey, carry some cash. You bitch about ATM fees but are you aware that the merchant has to pay about 10% on every card transaction. It adds up for a small business. 2. Small Staff - Yeah, I waited in line for a coke but they didn't start the movie until the line was gone. They 2 people working were going as fast as they could. 3. Customer Service - Fine by me if the guy is reading when I come out for a refill mid movie and he finishes the paragraph he is on before helping me. I was back in my seat in less time than it took Kermit to sing a song. Bottom line is I got to see a fun movie with my best friends, get a soda and popcorn for about $11. Bonus - No commercials before the movie and only 1 trailer. read more

I used to frequent this movie theatre back in the day when I lived in SE. This week I found myself in the neighborhood wanting to watch Guardians of the Galaxy with my girlfriend, and saw Cinemagic was playing it, and at a very opportune time (8pm). I called up a ton of friends, and got a good group of six of us together. We inadvertently were getting together on a $4 movie night, which was great. Everyone was blown away with the price. We immediately spent our savings on beer, which they had a fun variety of different premium canned beers. The movie experience itself was good. My friend Saachi who is a bit of a hi-fi nerd commented that the projector picture quality was excellent, and I was very much in agreeance with him. There are a few things that are less than perfect. The floor angle results in anyone of moderate height in front of you blocking a portion of the screen. The seats are beat up, but on the flip side they are some serious power lounging seats! Overall, price to quality is a major factor in my review of things... and this was pretty damn good quality for bargain basement pricing! For half the cost of a movie ticket anywhere else we got to see a movie AND have a great beer! read more

Tickets are $6.50. ($4.50 with valid student i.d. I saw one girl get shut down for trying to purchase a student ticket.) There is nutritional yeast to put on your popcorn. I love theatres with nutritional yeast. I always ask for a small cup and pour in some yeast and salt and anything else that looks good (cayanne? sure!) to bring in to the theatre with me. Then I season as I go, and it tastes good all the way down to the bottom. Mmmmm. I also put plain M & M's in my popcorn. They're only 2 bucks at Cinemagic! Seats are semi-comfy, the staff was super nice and efficient, the snacks were cheap and delicious, and the only thing that sucks is that the new Bond movie was a Quantum of Crap. read more

$5.50 for a matinee and $4 a decent beer is a great deal. That's the reason to come here. If you have an aversion to sticky floors and springy seats, then don't come here. The springs weren't rusty at least, and I know because they were visible in about 1/4th of the chairs. So at least you won't be impaled! The smell reminded me of my grandmother's attic - so kinda gross but also sorta quaint? The employees were nice and expertly shuffled us from ticket to concession to theater like we were Twinkies in a factory. Exempt from hyperbole, the following statement is true. AVENGERS: ENDGAME IS THE GREATEST PIECE OF CINEMA THAT HAS EVER BEEN PRODUCED! I saw the first Avengers movie after my friend Darius recommended it to me. He said something along the lines of "Sounds like some nerd, incel kinda movie you'd enjoy", lol. Darius is such a riot. And I'll admit the only reason I keep coming back to the Avengers saga is because of Paul Rudd. How can you not get lost in those eyes? And that smile? *swoons* laugh-out-loud jk (but not really ) I ate at Little Big Burger shortly before the movie, since it's right across the street from Cinemagic. That's not relevant to my review but I figured I should let you guys know. I might even write a review for them sometime! I felt so at home and welcomed when I walked into the establishment. And guess what?! They were playing 'This Old Dog' by Mac DeMarco! I was so happy. I ordered a veggie burger and some truffle oil fries. The cashier was incredibly friendly and even gave me a free refill on my soda pop! I bouyantly devoured my burger and fries like I was Hulk! After I finished my meal at Little Big Burger, it was time to get my movie (End)game on! The theater was pretty full when I arrived, but that didn't bother me since we were all collectively there to see men and women in spandex suits fly around and shoot lasers! What a time to be alive! I had invited some of my friends to see the movie with me but they all said they were busy. Imagine my surprise when I saw them all in the theater! I guess they had managed to find the time to hang out with me, and watch the best superhero movie EVER! Unfortunately since I arrived after my friends did, their row of seats were all occupied. There was one seat free but Darius said it was for their jackets and bags, which I completely understand! One time I went to see a movie called Weiner Dog - directed by Danny DeVito (who should legally change his name to Doggy DogVito lmao!) - and I draped my jacket over the back of my seat but completely forgot about it after the movie! I was far too ecstatic after seeing a movie about a dog, so I understand the importance of designating a theater seat for jackets just in case! Anyways, I digress. I sat in the row in front of my friends so I could still be close to them. As much as I enjoyed the cinematic magic of the Russo brothers, let me tell you, my buddies seemed to enjoy it even more! They were so entertained that they were spilling their popcorn everywhere and it was hitting me in the back of my head, a lot! Darius even accidentally spilled his soda pop down my shirt, laugh-out-loud! My only criticism of Avengers: Endgame, is that Rocket should have been a dog. I like racoons too, but nowhere near as much as I like dogs. The theater was pristine in cleanliness, and the staff were super friendly. Cinemagic provides inexpensive first-run movies right on Hawthorne. There is no need to cross a river, get on a highway, or (shudder) troll a mall parking lot. Cinemagic has it all as far as I am concerned. Plus, there is something about a place that shows one, maybe two movies. You drive by the marquee, see the movie title, and quickly decide yes or no. You are not bombarded with a massive list of titles that you could not possibly read safely while blowing the yellow light at SE 20th and Hawthorne. The place is definitely old. The springy chairs are exactly like the ones I sat in when I saw Star Wars for the first time. I love Cinemagic for exactly this reason. I do not typically eat or drink when I go to the movies, so I do not add or detract points for food and drink. I did buy some popcorn here about a year ago because they had the most adorable man working the concession stand - Jake Gyllenhaal eyes, who passes that up? And yes, the bathroom is old and tiny. Do yourself a favor and stop by to check it out, but avoid needing it if possible. There can be quite a wait. read more

First visit to this theater and caught Black Swan. (Weird, awesome, unusual movie, by the way!) I'm not a typical theater popcorn person, but the popcorn here was the best theater popcorn I'd ever had! It was buttery salty goodness! (In other words, I probably shouldn't have been eating it, but it was darn good!) I like small theaters. The sound and size of the theater were perfect for me. It was clean as far as I could tell. They could definitely use another bathroom for the women, but whatever. I would definitely go for another film here! read more
