We drive out here from Gresham to see movies because we love the retro vibes, and the flying pie pizza! The theaters are cozy and smaller. Seating is good with tables every third seat or so. Flying Pie Pizza is in the lobby, cant beat that.

The Academy is currently showing a charming mix of first run and classic content, so there's something for everyone. The ads for local businesses and trailers are shown at a mercifully moderate volume, and everything starts on time. We had a nice choice of drinks, served in sturdy plastic cups that fit beautifully in the cupholders. The Academy is a great neighborhood business - when our movie was over, we found the rear section of the lobby occupied by a pop-up with local artists displaying their creations. This section of Montavilla seems to be undergoing a renaissance for places to enjoy food and drinks. As Jean-Luc Godard said, "cinema is spectacle in its proper place" and The Academy, much like our other beloved second-run theaters in the Greatest City on Earth, takes its role seriously. I go to the movies almost every week and I will say I don't usually come here because I am accustomed to the reclining seats. However I saw Mufasa the other night was was surprised at just how much I loved it. This was the best popcorn I have ever had (even tho it was a little crumby). Portland is in no deficit when it comes to awesome Indy movie theaters but The Academy is quickly becoming my favorite one. They got comfy seats, they got good popcorn, they got a cute lil lounge to wait in, they got a decent lil beer selection, they got sweet art for sale on the walls, most importantly though their blend of new and classic movies playing at any given time are a treat! Apparently my wife and I are on a kick of patronizing local neighborhood movie theaters of late, having popped in to both the Roseway, and now the Academy, within the past month, and I've gotta say, I'm digging it. Excellent ticket and concession prices, with an awesome selection of beverage and food options, many of which are provided by restaurants local to the neighborhood, including pizza, sushi (at a movie theater? wut?) and locally brewed ciders and IPAs. The Regals and the AMCs of the world have lost that movie magic for me, so it's either Studio One (when we're feeling fancy), or a local outfit like this one. Sure, they're not as shiny and polished as a brand new cinema, but there's something cozy about "vintage" theaters like this one; it feels worn in and welcoming, like a comfy recliner. read more

We really have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to independent movie theaters here in Portland. Sadly though, we are losing our extra cheap second run theaters. The Academy might be the last one of its kind left in Portland since the Laurelhurst went first run. Now the Academy solely fills the niche that they both used to split. A combination of second run and repertory theater. Tickets are just $4 all day, everyday, with a two for one deal on Tuesday's. Once the idea that a theater served beer used to be revolutionary, but now it is just expected, and the Academy has a good selection. You'll also find the usual suspects: boxed candy, buttery popcorn, pizza, garden salads, sushi, local handcrafted confections. Their food selection is pretty great and outside of beer they have a lot of non alcoholic options like kombucha and cocoa. The screens and auditorium aren't huge or anything amazing, but they're more than acceptable for the price. There have been so many times where a movie didn't look interesting, but I ended up catching it on second run and loving it. Make it a date night and hit up the Tub n Tan afterwards. read more

Absolutely love this theater! Love the neon sign out front, love the prices, love the older theater feel, love the customer service and love the newer, and quite comfortable seats! I've been coming to this location for years and am not sure why I've never written a review :-/ I brought my mom here to see the Academy Award nominated A Star Is Born! I was so happy that I was still able to see this very moving movie on the big screen. I believe the seating has been upgraded since my last visit, which was a very nice surprise. I actually don't remember them having the BOGO ticketing on Tuesdays either! What a deal...two admissions for $4...we were pleasantly surprised! My mom ordered popcorn with butter and a soda. She thought the popcorn was good. I ordered a piece of the cheese pizza from Flying Pie. It was really good. It hit the spot since I wasn't feeling the popcorn today. The theater was very clean and the service was great! The only downfall is parking. It's street parking only, they have no parking lot. That being said, depending on the time of day, and especially weekends, parking can be challenging. Overall, I highly recommend this theater! read more

Best of its kind, 100%. Tickets are $4, all day every day. They show first and second-run films, as well as some oldies, and the occasional 35mm print. All that for $4 is pretty sweet. They also sell pizza from the spot next door (not my kinda pizza, but it's still pizza), as well as beer and wine, and some baked goods. They don't stick to their opening schedule and their popcorn isn't anything to write home about, but theatres are comfortable, clean, and cheap! read more

I love this place! The old retro vibes was very nostalgic, the interior was all fully renovated with new seats and flooring. They don't have the old shoe odor. I hate when movies theaters have that. My boyfriend and I saw princess mononoke, for a great price! They also serve sushi as well, which is very uncommon but very cool. If you're in town looking for a good revisit to some old classics for a knocking price, I'd advise to go here! Parking could be a pain in the ass, you might have to do some walking. read more

The Academy Theater is small, historic, and cheap representing the best of Portlandia, but it's a terrible experience to watch a movie because louder movies next door drown out the sound and the screens are small. Still, it's cheap, so, you definitely get what you pay for ... which also seems to be totally random per ticket. We paid $4 a ticket. The lady in front of us was let in for free. The guy behind paid $2. The movies are flicks in their 2nd run, so, Academy Theater is a choice for catching a good movie that just wasn't good enough for a normal theater's ticket price. The hippest aspect of the Academy Theater is that it also shows at least one older film at a time to catch up on classics you want to see on a larger-than-your-tv screen ... and by older, I mean movies from 2009. The concession stand has beer. Beer makes any movie better. It makes some movies way way better. Tip: Get Flying Pie Pizza, a couple Beers, and some Caramel Popcorn for dessert. The Academy Theater was originally built in 1948, but was closed for nearly 30 years until being renovated and re-opened in 2006. So, many parts of the theater are just 10 years old. If you live, work, or play nearby, the Academy Theater is a hip 'n historic chance to watch a movie ... as long as you don't care too much about the actual movie-watching experience. read more

This is one of the best 2nd run movie houses in Portland. You just can't beat this place for 4 bucks. In addition to 2nd run, they even throw in the occasional 35 year old hit, like Stripes with Bill Murray. There were 7 movies playing here so there's something for everyone. All you have to do is just pick one. The only thing I didn't like about it was the box office because it was very difficult to communicate with the ticket person. I didn't really care in the long run though because Academy still deserves 5 stars. The theaters are very clean... NO sticky floors or stray popcorn to contend with. And what better way to top it all off than pizza and beer? The seats were extra compfy with high backs and cloth cushions, just as good if not better than some of the 1st run places. And, no squeaks. If you're not careful you just might fall asleep, even if you're loving the movie. So a trip to the Academy would not be complete without mention of the bathrooms. Who cares about the bathrooms? Well, I do. Why? Because it was clean for one thing. I liked the design, the black and white tile and of course, the Art Deco light fixtures. I will spare you any further details about what you actually do in there. You get the picture. This one comes highly recommended. A balanced approach at Academy Theater. Smallish $4 tickets getcha a smallish screen. Seems fair to me! Actually the picture quality was excellent and we didn't miss not getting to see previews. In a nutshell, a comfortable cinema experience with nice seats and a good food and drink selection (including beer). Saw "Milk" here tonight. Loved it. I resisted seeing it earlier because I thought it was going to be a dry documentary. It wasn't dry at all! Sean Penn deserved his Oscar. Having gotten married in San Francisco City Hall last summer next to the bust of Harvey Milk under the dome made this movie all the more moving for JP and me. I don't know how long it will take, but Prop 8 and all other like-minded laws will at some point be discarded into the dustbin of history. Seeing "Milk" makes me believe that more than ever! read more

Cute theater in a cute neighborhood. They play second run films for $4, which is a steal. There's also a coupon in the Chinook Book (as of this writing) that gives you a buy one, get one free admission, and on Tuesdays they do buy one, get one deals. The food is great too, and they offer pizza and sushi from Miyamoto, a true hidden gem. Beer is good too. I'd go here more often if they were closer and played more 35mm films. Last time they played The Wizard of Oz on 35mm and it was cool to see such an old movie on celluloid, but it doesn't look like they do it often. This movie theater is awesome.. They have very cheap tickets, granted they don't show new releases. There is a pizza shop next door that appear to have an agreement with the movie theater so you can buy slices. You can eat and drink while enjoying your movie. The theater itself isn't the best quality as the seats are a little run down but the price makes up for it. Grey skies = movie time, so off we went to see Men in Black 3! Another theater that Portland decided to bring back and make new again. No need for being nostalgic since it's been updated with comfy chairs and a great screen and still reflects the way the theater used to look. It's nice to get that old local movie theater, like in the old days though. You don't feel like your dollars are being thrown into the wind. They sell Flying Pie pizza from right next door, as well as sushi rolls from Miyamoto down the street. The wines are Pacific NW style and so are the beers. Now if we could just get some local candy made and sold here. Digging the $4.00 per person too and you get so much more than "those" other theaters. read more

My favorite theater in Portland. The movies may not be brand spankin' new, but I'll trade busy opening weekend for pizza and wine with my movie any day. $4 will get you in, the popcorn is reasonably prices, as are drinks. THey sell a variety of beer and wine, and food extends to Flying Pie Pizza, Nathan's hot dogs, and other yummies such as ice cream. They have some sort of babysitting service that goes from Thursday - Sunday for movies starting before 8pm (I think). You need a reservation from what the web site says and it's $7.50 per kid. Not a bad deal if it saves you the hassle of a some nympho babysitter inving her boyfriend over as soon as you leave to watch porn on your computer while Jr. snoozes away in the crib. Ok, maybe that's extreme, but their babysitting service is still pretty handy. Tuesday they have a 2 for 1 special, $2 for 2 people to see any movie. Monday is Double Feature day, any 2 movies (one right after the next) for $6. That's two movies for less than you'd pay for one at a regular theater! There are some cool little places nearby too. Take your lady or man, head down the Stark Strip, and find yourself at this beautifully restored 1940's theater. Could easily make your romantic date night hit a home run....if ya know what I mean! read more
