5 stars for HORSEBACK RIDING! 2-3 stars for very strange service. My friend and I each got a discount voucher (1 hr guided trail ride for 2 for $29 - normally priced at $50) via bloomspot and decided to do this as a double date. I called the place to take care of our reservations, and the guy over the phone who was helping me sounded confused about the voucher and I was worried that my reservation wouldn't be placed (I guess I was kinda confusing too, because we both wanted to use our vouchers, but ride together as the 4 of us). We got there about 15 minutes late for our reservation (6pm), the guy in the front was kinda being gruffy about it, but they did give us the full hour. Horseback riding was so awesome!!! (even though my thighs were super sore the next day) It wasn't much of a "guided" tour since our "guide" seemed like he was only there to make sure we don't run off with the horses, and only said, "go right or go left" when necessary while looking so bored riding behind us. The trail we went on was kind of boring, but I just really wanted to try horseback riding, so I didn't mind much. Bathrooms = super nasty, street parking only. Helmets optional, but I would recommend it if you plan on doing any galloping. The course is super dusty, so wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. And if you bring carrots or apples, they let you feed your horse! read more

Tucked away in the corner of urban sprawl is this quaint stable with the most beautifully tempered horses and kind trail guides who efficiently get you going on a little saddleback journey on a scenic trail through Griffith Park. My horses name was Pablo, a sweet white and brown speckled handsome beast who enjoyed being front of the pack for most of the journey. Riding through nature hushes the noise and bustle of the city's edge, there are moments where the rhythmic sound of the horses gait feel meditative, and for that hour or so that you are out there, you start to reconnect with nature, which is such a necessity. It's also fun to see the different personalities of the horses unfold as you continue on down the trails. Some playful, some wanting to lead, others content with following. Some trying to snag a snack off the mountainside, others scratching an itch on the edge of the water trough. As a novice horse rider, I felt very safe and in control of Pablo, the horses are very well trained and mannered. You also have the trail guide there to have your back and lead you in the right direction so you don't have to worry about going off trail and getting lost or galloping off into the wrong paths. This is a fun and refreshing way to spend an afternoon. I only wish we could give our horses a healthy treat to thank them for the ride, but obviously you don't want to be messing with their diets. We visited on a Sunday, it was pretty busy and some of the horses we rode (including Pablo) had to go right back out with a new rider when we got back. They have over 40 horses so I am sure they get rotated out so that they have a chance to rest in between rides. I'm all about humane treatment and happy animals, which is important to be conscious of, especially when the animals have a job that involves human recreation. So, get your riding boots on and get some nature on, city slicker! read more

Impromptu horseback riding on a beautiful Saturday afternoon ftw! We went to one of the horseback riding place in Hollywood but discovered the price had gone up from $25 to $40 per hour per person so we decided to look for other options. And here we are! Check-in was a breeze. They make you read and sign some release waivers. Basically acknowledging that you understand the risks and they are not liable if something happens. Standard stuff. Helmets are available at free of charge if you choose to. Hubby and I didn't want helmet hair so we skipped it and we were absolutely fine. TIP: CASH ONLY. After check-in, you line up at the podium (?) and they bring a horse to you. Once you're on, they give you a 30-second instruction on how to make the horse go right, left and stop. Next thing you know, you're on your way to Griffith Park trail! No need to wait for a certain amount of people to form a group as they have plenty of guides and as soon as you're ready, you're good to go. There is a guide but he pretty much just tells you to go left or right and make sure you don't run off with the horses. I loved the fact that we had freedom with the horse. But I did wish the guide didn't make that many click-y sounds with his tongue because evidently, it's a sign for the horses to start running! My poor buttocks were not accustoms to that much bouncing. Also hubby's horse was just a bit coo coo crazy. Horse tried to bite another horse and kick him for getting ahead. Competitive much!? Sheesh. Our horses did appear to be a little on the hungry side though. Occasionally they'll want to stop on the side of the road to munch on some grass but as long as you pull the reins (there'll be a bit of resistance), they'll be back on track. 1 hour was more than enough for our poor buttocks. Like another Yelper said, if your buttocks are not made of steel, 1 hour will be more than enough. I was definitely sore for the next couple of days (but I am severely out of shape). Though 2 hours course takes you on a different trail so many I'll bring some buttock pillows another day and join the fun. read more

The most inexpensive horseback trail ride ever. We know why they charge $30 for one hour ride while other places charge double. My son and I were with three other riders. I ride regularly, but five minutes in the ride. My horse and the other rider's horse started acting up. Bucking and taking off at a high speed. The other rider got off his horse and told our guide that his heart couldn't take the out of control behavior from his horse and he wanted to walk back to the stables. I actually felt the same way. I am taking riding lessons once a week and I ride a lot. BUT this time I feared for my life and decided to get off my horse, too. At least we both enjoyed walking and chatting for a 10 minute walk back to the stables. When we got to the stables, the other guest didn't ask for money back. He just left. He was not angry at all but he was disappointed and very scared. I got a replacement horse with stable temper. A new guide took me out to catch up with my group. One thing I noticed in my son's horse is that his horse was limping and looks like in pain. When we see horses that may not be taken good care of, it makes us so sad. Also our guide seemed to wake up on the wrong side of the bed and had an aggressive tone when he was talking to the other riders.. Won't be back. read more

OK, it' ain't THE BEST horseback riding excursion I've ever experienced, but it is definitely a fine stable here in the heart of Los Angeles. No appointment necessary, and they give you a guide and off you go. The guide isn't all in-your-face, which is GREAT if you want some relaxation on the horse. For 2-hours at $45, they took us up to the Griffith Park Observatory Hike, where the view is phenomenal (I often make this hike on foot through the other side), and the Hollywood sign is in mega sight. I am glad to have gone with Circle K Riding Stables/ Horse Rental for my first horseback riding experience! The workers here are really nice and wait is short on a Sunday morning (~10AM; no reservation needed!). My 5 friends and I went on a 1-hr guided tour ($25/ea), which took us around a part of the Griffith Park. The beginning of the trail from the stable to the park entrance was super dusty, so I was not a fan of that part. However, the city view from the top of the Griffith Park was gorgeous! (-1 star): - Wished our guide would have told us some basic tips on about how to control the horses (i.e., speed up, slow down, stop, etc) as opposed to just instructing the horse to turn right and left since some horses in the group are faster/slower than others. Overall, I would definitely recommend Circle K for your equestrian cravings! It's a good place for a weekend family gathering, dates, and even just a hangout. My father grew up on various farms on the east coast. He has been on and around horses since he was a baby. When he moved out to L.A. a few decades ago he had to find a place to ride horses that was close to home. Due to his busy work schedule he didn't have the time to own a horse because of the constant care, exercise, and attention that a horse requires. So, he wanted to find a stable that he could count on to provide what he desired. After riding at all the different stables around Griffith Park he chose Circle K as his spot. When I was old enough to ride at age 7 he took me riding for my first time and I was instantly hooked. I have been riding at Circle K stables for about 20 years now and have never had a bad experience. Please keep in mind that if you are new to horseback riding there are a few things that you must understand. The first is that you have to realize that you are riding on top of a LIVE animal, and even the most expertly trained animal can have unpredictable reactions. For example, in my 20 years of horseback riding I've learned that one of the most dangerous things to come across on the trail in front of your horse is a plastic bag. You see, horses see differently than humans. It's called an "equine eye" and its almost like that of a fish - where their sight is slightly magnified. A horse is a "flight" animal, which means that in times of panic or nervousness it's natural instinct is to run away. So to a horse, a floating plastic bag could be compared to a crazy ghost that they are afraid of. Although there have been a few times where I've been out on the trails and the horse(s) were spooked, it was all because of something that Is natural for them to be afraid of. Griffith Park has over 50 miles of open trails and many people and animals frequent it. A horse can be spooked by a jogger in flashy clothes, another horse that is acting crazy (sometimes owned by private cowboys and cowgirls), a local coyote, or even a loud unexpected noise. Fortunately, the stables make you sign a waiver that explains all of this, so that you know what you could possibly expect. Ultimately, if you want to ride horses in Los Angeles at a place that treats their horses right, and provides a quality ride at quality prices, this is the place to go. read more

As others said, the staff is very friendly and the prices are pretty good ($25). This is apparently a good alternative to Sunset Stables (on the other side of the mountains), if you would like to ride over to the Hollywood sign it is said to take 2 hours and would therefore be $50. The horses: were gentle, however not very responsive to anyone but the guide (but this could be for lack of experienced rider, to give you an idea, I would say I am an intermediate rider). It was difficult to get the horses to sustain a trot. Also, for other girls who were not as controlling with their reigns, some horses kept eating grass and plants as we went along. The route: was ok, not the most scenic, but from the top of the mountain you can see the valley. The path was pretty dusty, so be prepared to get dirty. The service: was nice and friendly, but note that they send a guide with your group so it can be kind of akward, you're not sure if you should talk to them, and the silence can also be a little strange. Our guide didn't speak English that well so we didn't feel as obligated to hold a conversation, but it was still a little strange. read more

Absolutely amazing experience! The price was good and the guide was very nice too. I went with my mom whos here for a visit. Our guide name is Kathy and she is very friendly and sweet. I see a lot of reviews here saying how the guide was useless, but not Kathy. She helped me to pick up my hat that was blown away by the wind and chatted with us about the area. I also see reviews saying how the horses bite each other and would suddenly speed up, but come on! They are animals with a mind of their own. If you do not enjoy the sudden movements or small argument within the horses, then you should go for a car instead of horse. That been said. Both me and my mom had decent experience of riding and we enjoyed the freedom Kathy gave us. We trotted and cantered a bit. Kathy was behind us unlike most guide so we were leading the way. This is a very different experience from the dull 20 people single profile line slow walking sort of riding you'd expect with most places. We would most certainly come back! I had the pleasure of riding Buck last sunday. I was worried maybe his name was linked to his reputation, but it wasnt. He was a gentle giant and very sweet. He ran when he wanted to run, but if you choose a slow horse you'll be fine, when I didn't want to run anymore he was easy to control. The trail guide kept close and led us where to go, but also kept out of our way. My hat flew off mid ride and he grabbed it for me, and held on to it for the remainder of the ride. The views are lovely, the horses are magical, the guide was great. Our group was of only 3 people and the other person was my good friend. So it was a very intimate and private experience. I'm rating my horseback riding experience on professional guides, quality of horses, scenery and our takeaway experience. We often seek out horseback riding on vacations and today my two daughters and I wanted to ride. I grew up riding, one daughter took lessons for several years and the other has ridden many times. After maneuvering through the LA traffic, we arrived late morning. We have ridden at another stable close to this one and were excited to try Circle K. Our guide saddled up three horses and off we went in minutes. Each one of our beautiful horses were ready to give us what we asked of them and we all had a great ride. I have been coming here for years, and I absolutely love this place. They take great care of their horses, they are friendly, and they cater to your needs whether you're a first-timer, novice or expert. I try coming here about once a month, and usually come with some friends. I used to ride more as a youngin' and honestly I just love that I get a chance to hop on a horse every so now and then, where it isn't just a bumper to bumper trail ride. My boyfriend surprised me and took me to Circle K Riding Stables for a fun day activity. Anyone who knows me knows how much I am obsessed with horses. So when I found out about this surprise date I was extremely excited! We arrived there around 9am so we were pretty much the only people there. We parked on the side street where the entrance is located. We approached the window and a young man greeted us very kindly and explained the hourly rates ($30 an hour) and where the trail will begin and end. He handed us each the required paper work to read and sign, which was very simple and short. We approached the horses in the stable and had the chance to interact with them for a bit until our actual riding horses were ready to come out. All the horses are absolutely beautiful! They're all very sharp, alert and well groomed. The young man who was helping us out brought out 2 horses, Pablo (for me) and Bishop (for my boyfriend). Both horses were massive! I mean you don't really realize how big the horses are until you're about to get on one. Shortly after a quick tutorial about how to direct our horses to the right, left, going faster and how to stop we hit the road. We got luckily by going early because of two reason: 1. It wasn't too hot 2. Less crowd. Normally it's not too hot in the mornings but it's LA, you never know what Mother Nature will decide that day. The ride was very peaceful and beautiful. Since it was just the two of us and our guide, we got to ride at a slow and normal pace. We got to enjoy the beautiful hills and mountains that were covered with gorgeous wild flowers that had bloomed. There was so much greenery around us. It was truly magical. Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable. She was very careful with us and made sure our horses were staying on the trail. When we reached the top of the mountain we got to stop and enjoy the view and take some picture. We also got to see the view of Burbank / Glendale from up top. Our horses got a little rest when we came to a stop so they can eat some of that delicious grass on top of the mountain too :) We didn't realize how quickly that hour went by. When we reached the bottom of the mountain we decided to speed up a bit. That was very fun too! Over all our experience was amazing here. From the staff to the horses to the scenery everything was magical. We can not wait to go back! read more

A very bad experience. So, like that, me and my wife decided to take our day off on horseback. So we set off. I am my wife and another couple of friends. We are all experienced in horse riding. We arrived at a place where we got horses and started riding. Of course a tour guide accompanies us. The horses we got were tired and barely want to go at a fast pace. And one of the girls' horses was not disciplined and began to be disturbed. We asked the instructor responsible for exchanging the woman with the horse. Because she was very scared and pressed. And if the insolent guide did not agree to the replacement. And he said 'This is my horse and I decide. Because I can. " We felt uncomfortable and had no choice but to finish the track before we could get to the middle of the track. Just a disappointment. read more

Be weary. Though I saw many groups having safe and happy trips, our experience was not good. Just my friend and I with our guild. At first the ride was fine, nothing unexpected until we encountered another group and switched guilds. The horses because very agitated and at an almost inaudible whistle, the horses started running. Almost racing each other. They trotted and ran as we tried to slow them and our guild would whistle and they would run. As we started climbing my horse got up on the other and I was kicked, but not injured. We road fighting these horses for another 5-10 mins and and another altercation between the horses had mine taking off and bucking precariously close to the edge. Luckily I was able to hang on and not fly off down the side of the mountain. Which needless to say would have ruined my day. I have some experience with horses, and I'm not afraid of them. No guidance or help was offered. Nothing was even said. We requested to get off and walk them and asked if it was ok... he said "I don't know" he did call to ask what to do but did not communicate anything to us. We could not get the horses to stop long enough for us to safety get off anyway. At this point before climbing any high I demanded we turn around and go back. The return journey they calmed down as long as we all walked separately. Once they came closer they got tense again. When we got back we were asked "What do you want to do?" "Well first, we're going to get off these horses and then you're going to give us our money back. Thank you." Then we were left to wrangle 3 horses (cause one came out of nowhere) as they pushed us against the fence. I held two while the other followed my friend into the building. These horses seem overworked, crowded and are in they're saddles all day. Most likely in ill fitting equipment, in pain and obviously agitated. I'm sure they're lovely in the morning but get testy in the heat of the day. All in all it was a sad and dangerous experience, that luckily ended safely because we were able to take charge and demanded to be taken back. If you feel unsafe, speak up and take charge of your safety. They are pumping people through and your comfort and safety is not their priority. read more

I had an ok time here. I took my niece for a one hour ride. It was $40 each for one hour, plus a tip. It was easy to get to, street parking was available, and it was pretty close to Griffith park so it was nice to be in the woods on a pretty Saturday morning. I would like to offer some constructive feedback. I felt like customer service was pretty lacking, at least during my experience. We had reservations at 10. After we paid and filled out paperwork indicating our skill level (novice) the man in the office said, when you are ready, go over by those benches. It was only about 9:45 so we made a stop in the restroom (which was hard to find) and adjusted our helmets and made our way to the benches. It was only 9:55 at that point, but the horse handlers seemed a bit frustrated with us already. Maybe we were supposed to go to the bench immediately after paying? They loaded us on horses without instructions or introductions to our horses or to our guide. Soon after, our guide arrived and gave us directed to go across the bridge. She didn't introduce herself or make sure we had a basic understanding of how to hold the reins and communicate with the horse. It felt awkward and it was hard to communicate for the first few minutes out on the trail because of our masks and the traffic noise, so it was hard to communicate that we actually need a little more guidance. My niece was on a horse that was a little hard to manage. The guide seemed kind of frustrated with her when the horse didn't follow her attempts to direct it. My niece felt bad about that, which is not what you want out of a fun outing. My advice would be to have your guides learn a simple script to be a little more personable, introduce themselves, and make sure the ride is as comfortable and safe for both the horses and novice riders before we even get on the horses. And most kids like to know the name of the horse they are riding, so have that info! I felt like I was a mild inconvenience to the staff, but all I wanted was a peaceful little horse adventure, and I paid money to have that. It doesn't cost a thing to be kind and welcoming. read more

This place is CASH ONLY. That is something we did not know before coming here so once we arrived we had to leave and find an ATM and then come back before riding. We came here for my boyfriends birthday. Got paired up with three nice gentleman who were also semi-experienced riders and headed up the trail with our guide. I will say that my boyfriend and I are more experienced riders and are used to being around horses but for beginners I'm not sure I'd recommend this place. The horses can start to trot pretty quickly at times and one guy in our group actually fell off the back of his horse because he wasn't holding on tightly enough and the horse started to run. Kind of scary for him but he was totally fine and our trail ride for the most part was really beautiful, quiet, and scenic. If you're an semi-experienced rider just looking for a nice trail ride here in LA this place is awesome. read more

I thought this place would be hard to find, but hubby drove here like a pro. We found some street parking on a Saturday morning around 10 AM. There were a lot of horses at the stables and some workers walking around. Quite a few people were horseback riding this morning, too. It was a perfect day to be out, because it was nice and cool. Hubby and I paid $60 for a 1 hour session for 2. Leading the horse was easy, but I felt bad pulling on the reins because the horse seemed to fight against it even though I tried to be gentle. Hubby and I are both novices. We rode up the mountain and down and crossed a couple roads. There were a lot of steep trails. My horse wanted to eat all the wildflowers and kept farting. It was really funny. The horse behind me kept smelling its butt. It was not the most romantic date but was quite an experience. When we were heading back to the stable, my horse got excited and wanted to sprint home. You have to pull back to slow it down or stop. read more
