Enjoy a ride on a gentle, well-trained horse
    Michael S.

My wife and I planned a weekend trip to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary and flew into Hollywood on Friday. With nothing scheduled for the afternoon, we came across Sunset Ranch Hollywood and booked their evening 2-hour trail ride. It turned out to be the perfect way to start our trip. We ended up being the only two on the ride, which made the experience even more special. Our guide, Ashley, was knowledgeable, personable, and easy to talk to. The conversation throughout the ride made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal. The views were incredible--overlooking the Hollywood Hills, the Hollywood sign, the observatory, and even out toward Glendale. It's a perspective you just don't get any other way. We rode Apollo and Rain, and both horses were fantastic. They were calm, well-trained, and clearly knew the trail, which made the ride easy and enjoyable--even for riders who don't have a lot of experience. With just a few small corrections along the way, we felt more confident than we probably deserved. I'm sure a group ride would be fun, but having such a small, personal experience really made this memorable for us. It was a great way to kick off a special weekend, and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

I came here for my birthday and I absolutely loved it. The whole ranch crew was so nice and helpful. Very clear instructions and guidelines, which made it easy and fun. Loved my experience hope to come back soon. Thank you Lennox for the amazing tour.

Great adventure, very well priced and professionally run. Would recommend. We had a blast.

First time ever horse back riding, it was a fun experience! You get a demonstration before even going on , so don't panic!! They teach you how to navigate the horse and honestly it was not so bad at all. In the beginning I was struggling a bit then it clicked. Plus you're with a group and there's some leaders who will help you if your horse isn't cooperating. It's a really nice view riding up! I would recommend it! Bring sunglasses!

I booked this experience the day before, mainly because I wanted to see how the weather would be during the heat wave. Getting there can be a little tricky, Google Maps doesn't take you all the way up. The ranch is located past the gate at the top, and you'll need a reservation to get through. I took an Uber, but the driver wasn't familiar with the route and ended up driving a bit too close to the horses. To avoid confusion, you can always get dropped off at the gate and walk a few minutes up. I chose the one hour ride, which was perfect for me, I don't think I could have managed the full two hours physically. The horse you're paired with may vary, I had Bonnie, a lovely black mare. Some horses are more adventurous than others and might wander a little too close to the cliff edge, which was more excitement than I needed! Our guide, Cass, was fantastic, very knowledgeable, answered all our questions, and gave us a helpful introduction to the horses. She also offered to take photos and videos of us along the ride, which was a nice touch. There's even a private viewpoint for the Hollywood sign, and on the way back we got a close up look at it, which was an incredible highlight.

This place was amazing so man different animals it made me feel like i was at a mid western ranch. The staff were very friendly and often pretty funny. Very knowledgable about the ride and rider safety. They kept a close eye on how we rode the horses to protect us and the horses. We tipped because the guides were awesome. I suggest going in the morning 9am tour or evening tour to keep cool in the summer. Parking could be better for those of us not in a pick up truck. A paved parking lot would be cooler for us city folk

    Gorgeous views!

Had the best time the the horse tour around the mountains of Hollywood. My son and I did the two hour tour. They have nice horses and great guides. We had Amy and she was very informative on our tour. She told us about all the foliage and also buildings we could view from our tour. The horses are well taken care of and they have safety as a priority. We had a great time riding horses around the Hollywood sign and learning about the area! Easy parking. Porto potties only. No bags allowed on tour. Wear sunscreen. I do wish our pics turned out a little better but overall just a wonderful time!

Our family of four, with two teens, had a wonderful evening ride. 2 of us had never rode before and it was not a problem - the horses were wonderful! The guides know each horse and their personality (and there are a lot of them) and you can tell how much they enjoy being around them. My horse definitely had a personality and didn't like to stay in line but he was always easily redirected. The guides ensured families stayed together and even took pictures of each group riding together. This was a wonderful experience - well worth it. Thank you for a nice evening ride in the beautiful California hills.

This is the best place to see the horses and go horseback riding! Employees were very friendly, and so are the horses. The riders give you a safety speech and tutorial on how to ride a horse. And the horses are well trained. Beginners or advanced riders would love this ranch. Please either bring cash to tip the rider or you can Venmo them, it's the only way they make money

I came for a 2 hour horse ride. Make sure to dress comfortable and follow the instructions. It's a great view and there was perfect weather. The staff were kind.

I'm usually not much for riding horses, but today was my birthday and I decided to do something different. We did the one hour trail ride and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but while I was sitting on the horse, I had a silly smile plastered on my face the whole time. Wonderful just to be out in the park, enjoying the amazing views and spot of nature in the middle of a giant city. Scheduled start times can be a bit flexible so don't schedule your events around this too tightly or you might be disappointed. I counted about 100 horses here and enjoyed just seeing them hanging out. Staff was very friendly and helpful to those of us who are novices on the horse. Great experience that everyone should try at least once!

This was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it if it's something you're looking into. The staff was friendly and even let us feed a horse an apple. Making the reservation was pretty simple, the parking was the only thing that tripped us up. The parking lot is past the gate and it is just a patch of dirt, luckily we were at the end of the day so there were little to no cars when we got there. You have to walk a bit up a hill to get to the actual ranch, but then you see all of the beautiful horses. This is definitely a beginner friendly experience, I've never ridden a horse and was very nervous in the beginning but all of the horses know what they're doing and the staff is also a big help. Beautiful scenery and so cool seeing all of their horses. I would suggest it!

So cool! The staff was so nice and accommodating, they offer to take pictures of you on your horse, super beginner friendly, and 100% worth the money!

Ask the Community - Sunset Ranch Hollywood Stables

Are you able to ride fast? Are children allowed?

No riding fast on group tours as you are all together. Children over the age of 8 are allowed and anyone under 18 needs to have an adult

Do you have to wear that helmet?

If you have to ask, then you should not rent a horse. Yes, helmets are for all riders, if you think you are never going to need one, then trust me you will end up with a head injury or worse. Horses are inherently dangerous even when you're…

Can my 1.5 year old ride with us?

I think riders have to be 8 years or older. It would be really hard to ride that far with a toddler unless you’re both very experienced riders who do this often.

    Do you offer dressage lessons?

I've never seen anyone doing a Dressage lesson. Just English and Western.

Hello. I am looking to have a horseback riding birthday party for my daughter. Is this something your facility can accommodate? What would the price be for 10 riders? Thanks

Best to consult their website as the prices change quite a bit. I don't think they check here often to answer questions. I'd just give them a call or look online.

Is there someone taking professional photos while you ride? Some ranches offer a Photogtspher who is there the entire ride capturing pics. Do they have this service available?

Your guide will take pictures with her/his phone and send them to you or will ask for your phone if you feel comfortable with someone else using your phone. They will do their best to take pictures with a nice background and if in a group,…

Do you have to know how to ride a horse to ride one?

Not at all. They teach you the basics.

I wanted to book a reservation for a 2 hour ride but it appears that I can only book for party of two. Is there a way around or must I come in person, or are you not allowing solo rides?

I'd recommend calling the ranch the day of and asking what times the two hour rides that are booked are going out. Then tell them which one you want to join so they are expecting you. Arrive a bit early just in case the other party is early. Walk…

Can my 5 year old ride with me on a trail ? How do they charge for one hour ride with child?

Yes if you ride together under 240lbs is what I see on there offering sign

    What are the prices?

There are two rides available: one hour and two hour. I was there recently, and the cost for two hour ride for three people was ~$220. They also encourage tipping your tour guide.

What do they charge for indoor or outdoor boarding?

$550.00 per month including feed and cleaning of stall.

The staff are so friendly and helpful. The horses were also very calm and friendly. I got to ride Sunny. It's a nice trail thru Griffith Park at a slow, easy pace. Our guide Julio was very friendly and informative. Rates were pretty affordable. They also offer longer rides. Would definitely go again! Street parking is pretty available on Riverside.

There is free street parking on this street that we were able to find easily. We came on a Sunday morning at 9 am on a sunny day in November and no one else opted to ride at this time so it ended up being a private ride just for us. Another reviewer complained that their ride wasn't private but I don't even know if they offer actual private rides here?? If you want one your best bet would be calling to see if anyone else has booked a time slot and book one that is less likely to be popular such as weekday early morning etc. We chose to $50/person for a 1 hour approximately 3 mile ride (3.5 according to my watch). Your horse will be selected for you and I rode with Cortez who was friendly and very beginner friendly! Our guide was both English and Spanish speaking and directed us through the route, telling us which way to go but the horses are really good about already knowing the route so required reorienting them isn't very necessary. There isn't any other dialogue exchanged like info on the trails or historic info about Griffith park but both my friend and I are local to LA so we didn't mind but something to keep in mind for tourists. We did come across a pack of 3 coyotes but they didn't bother us and the horses did not get scared at all! The rental place also offers helmets (wear one!!!) for free in different sizes. It was quite sunny when we went so even though it was cooler outside we actually got really hot so I recommend dressing in layers, wearing pants you're ok with getting dirty/dusty, and boots or sneakers as well as sunglasses.
