I didn't know that this place even had a website let alone Yelp. Well, this review is a little past overdue. Better late than never. I have always wanted to ride a horse since I was a little kid. Something about horses and myself go hand in hand. They are powerful animals and I like power to a certain extent. Since my son knew how much I have been wanting to ride a horse, he surprised me and got 2 tickets to go to horseback riding. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the tickets. With that being said, him and I went there beginning of this year. You get to choose the duration of the time, what type of horse you want to rent, and once you get on it you also choose the speed how and what you like. As beginners, we went for slow-to medium. It was perfect for an entire hour. Tickets for both adults and kids are $50, per person. Trust me, it's so worth it!! The staff were very welcoming, accommodating, understanding, asked us if we had any previous injuries, cuts, wounds, heart condition before you sign the consent form and get on top of that poor animal that had to take us around and round. We chose to go and see different scenic sites, and it also takes you around Griffith park area. It has many different trails and we asked for ALL or nothing. Who knows when will I ever experience this wonderful pleasure again? We had a great time, it goes straight with a whole hour w/out making any stops. Get some water with you. The only downside is that they don't except any other method of payments except cash. That's ok, it didn't bother us. There is a guide that goes with you to make sure you are safe and so are the horses!! Has parking, restrooms and I am glad that we went on this journey. Hours of operation is every day from 9AM to 5pm. You can make reservations online or just simply go in person. All are welcome!! Forgot the names of our horses though. Thank you all for this WONDERFUL pleasure/experience that you have brought into our lives. Will definitely return next time I am in the mood for some horseback riding. read more

So much fun! Our guide, Hector, was a cool guy. Chill, but knowledgeable and experienced with the horses. The 1.5 hour option was the perfect amount of time for a beginner: the horses go slow, the route is scenic and it's totally worth while. You go through a small tunnel, a bit uphill and downhill at times, and through the Griffith which is pretty great. You don't need experience, you can get a helmet if you ask for one, and the group was a nice intimate size that feels safe. Definitely recommend for a date or to simply try something new! read more

Before writing this review I read others to make sure this wasn't just a "me" problem. Also as soon as the ride was over and I stepped in the car with my friend, we immediately got into the bad experience. If you are a first time rider or inexperienced do not come here. I have been riding a handful of times in my life since i was younger and this was by far the worst experience. All of the staff including the guides are non communicative. Anytime I've ever gotten on a horse the guide will ALWAYS get you saddled up and adjusted and explain any dues and don'ts before hand weather you've ridden before or not . They got everyone on the horse with ZERO instructions They just load you on the horse and say ok put your feet in the saddles. Then you take off (literally) Even from prior reviews, including my own experience, it seems like all of the horses are overworked and tired as most of them throughout my ride were extremely aggressive, biting other horses and taking off and even trying to buck me off . Luckily i am familiar with pulling back the reins as it was still violently bucking . The 2 yes 2 instructors seem annoyed just trying to get through the ride . There was so many and experienced writers on my ride, which made it worse for me because they didn't know how to handle their horse. It kept bumping into mine, and the guide was just in the back until the different horses started bucking then he would just say move to the left or move to the right there was no real guidance or communication. The staff need to do better in general I would not recommend this place for new riders All the horses here are aggressive and overworked and the rides with the guides seem rushed. You will get hurt here if you don't know what your doing Also weird that helmets here are optional I have never ridden at a place where they don't make you wear one and don't secure you or make sure before you take off! read more

Beautiful horses but beware if you are late no one will help. We tried calling to cancel and the person who answered the phone was very rude. He hung up after I tried explaining how we received an email for a reschedule as we had made plans for thanksgiving we would not be able to make it and he spoke over me, did not let me speak much and I tried defending myself. I have been looking for places for horse rental. This would be my go to place. Reservation would have to be done online. They have 30 min, 1 hour, 1.5 hour, and 2 hours available. Staff are friendly at check-in, and we all have to fill out forms to let them know our experience level and safety concern. Horses are well trained, and I did not feel scared throughout the ride. Ride was very smooth. It would be great if we are allowed to trot the horse for a little. Overall good experience. They have picnic tables available, and they can do birthday party on site. This week I booked a 1.5-hour Oak Canyon Trail ride for my 22nd birthday with my boyfriend and mom because I'd actually had a great experience here before. Unfortunately, this visit felt completely different. And I don't think I'll come back. Our reservation was at 9:30 a.m., and while we planned to arrive early, traffic from the Santa Monica/Culver City area plus a full freeway stop by police delayed us. We arrived around 9:38. I fully understand late policies and was mentally prepared if the ride had to be canceled, that part wasn't the issue. The issue was how it was handled. Right away we were told we were "an hour late," which simply wasn't accurate. The tone felt dismissive from the start. We were eventually allowed to ride, but the 90-minute reservation was cut to under an hour. I completely understand adjustments when someone is late, but the overall attitude made it feel more like punishment than policy. There were also a few comments that came off unnecessarily sarcastic rather than helpful. For example, when I mentioned I'd ridden a few times and chose the more experienced option, I was asked, "What makes you think you're a good rider?" in a tone that didn't feel lighthearted. Later, when I asked basic questions about handling the horse, I was told, "Well, you said you were a good rider, so you should know." Those moments just felt awkward instead of supportive, especially since safety and comfort should be the priority. During the trail there was almost no guidance, conversation, or effort to make the ride enjoyable. On my previous visit, the guide shared information about the horses and trail which made it memorable, this time it felt very cold and transactional. There were also comments about us "wasting time" and reminders about other riders supposedly being on time, which honestly just killed the birthday vibe. I'm not looking for refunds, discounts, or anything free just sharing feedback because customer experience matters, especially when people book special occasions. The trail itself is beautiful and the horses were great, but hospitality really makes or breaks something like this. I asked my horse girl friend to find a place closer to me to surprise my SO with a ride, and LA Horse Rentals is held in high regard in the community with how the horses are cared for. That mattered to me, so I booked a surprise ride for this week. Unfortunately... A storm came through and I was heartbroken. As soon as the storm hit the news, I called LA Horse rentals. I spoke to a guy who worked there and he said I could call back the morning before. I checked in the morning before, and it was so hit or miss that I figured I'd wing it, since a true cancelation from weather would be actual rain, and I knew myself and my SO wouldn't mind sprinkling lol. *He's from Indiana, they're built different. The day of, I actually got a call from who I think is the owner, who was incredibly sweet, knew it was a surprise, and that it was important to me, but also knew I was coming from Long Beach. She gave me an update that the rain had already started and they weren't heading out - and don't unless it's dry at least for the beginning of the ride. Our ride was canceled, I was refunded, and I 10000% will rebook when I have a better grasp of our schedules in the new year. Their customer service is admirable, and I totally understand if they're not around 24/7 as they do have scheduled rides leaving. read more

Take a moment to walk the stable before your ride and you will be enchanted. Beautiful horses all lined up in a row. Maybe one of the horse owners will greet you like one greeted us and handed us a carrot to feed his lovely steed. Suffice to say, she loved my sis and I immediately! Note: plenty free parking right at the entry. Horses here are so easygoing and it's no wonder they're happy because they look so healthy and well taken care of. They totally embody the laidback LA persona and are so great at following their riders lead. I think anyone can agree - riding a well-trained horse makes the ride that much more enjoyable. This stable is so easily accessible in the city, so if you you begin craving a ride on a whim, you don't have to look far or go out of your way to find one. Honestly, spending time at this stable feels so accesible, it feels like a great way to wind down after many a long work day. Therapeutic, relaxing, and refreshing - the ride, and the price. The staff makes excellent company as well. My sis and I will be going back again and again... and again... again... P.S. I'd recommend wearing long pants (vs items that expose your legs, like shorts and skirts). I think this makes for a more comfortable ride, in general while on horseback. read more

I had high hopes for LA Horse Rentals, but unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. My group arrived as a group walk in at exactly 4:03 PM--just three minutes past the hour--only to be met with immediate hostility from the main worker, a middle-aged Hispanic man at the front. He refused us service stating that he only had one worker for all the people there, despite a party of six checking in right in front of us. We respectfully asked if there was any way to still ride, but he firmly declined. While we were still at the stables browsing and taking in the ambience , we noticed that same party of six had three extra guests join them--making a total of nine riders. When we brought this up, the worker claimed he didn't see us and assumed we had "disappeared," so he gave our spots away. It felt like a weak excuse to cover up a clear lack of fairness and organization. When we tried to have a calm conversation about the situation, he deflected the issue by suggesting we just didn't understand him because of a language barrier--which was not the case at all. Honestly, the whole situation felt discriminatory. We couldn't help but feel that our group--being all women--was treated with less respect and care. If you're considering visiting this place, especially as a group of women, I would not recommend it. We were let down, disrespected, and ultimately denied a service we were fully prepared and excited to enjoy. read more

I wanted to surprise a friend for her bday but thought its not really my place to plan some thing sweet like this. During our last meet up I asked "what are you doing for your bday?" She said nothing was planned and no one was planning something. My original thought came into play and I asked "can I plan something for your bday?" It was hard to keep a secret as LA Horse Rentals asked me some questions I didn't know how to answer. By that time I gave in and said "I am taking you horse back riding". This was something that she has been wanting to do ask the last time was in her teens. As we arrived for our appointment, parking was a bit scarce but we were lucky to find a spot. We checked in, each filled out a form and waited around in the stable area until our horses were ready. Our 1hr guided tour was nice. It took us around the are of Griffith Park scraping the edge of Forest Lawn. Before we headed out we were given a brief tutorial on how to steer our horses. Things seemed simple and they were! I did get a little nervous when my horse started to trot and catch up to the horse in front of it. Overall I had a great time, my butt hurts and would def do it again on a different tour or maybe something that will make the horse go a little faster. Parking: limited private lot, street. It was disappointing on the last ride, the guide knowingly put me on a slow horse and my husband on a fast horse and then scolded me when I tried to catch up with my husband. I booked a trail ride for us together, but I didn't get to say a single word to him for the entire 1 hour ride. The trail guide (a middle aged woman) was not helpful in making it a pleasant or enjoyable ride. It was a major disappointment as I've previously liked my previous rides with LA horse rentals. First time horse riding in LA, but was an amazing experience. The employees were friendly and ensure we were properly fitted with a helmet and on a proper horse for our size. Horses were nice and well trained. We were helped on the horse and showed how to steer the horse each way and how to stop & go. Possibly the worst riding experience of my life--let's just start there. Firstly, I should clarify that while I'm not the most experienced rider, I've been on horseback at least fifty times in my life, trying everything from a Quarter Horse to a Tennessee Walker. Despite a decade having passed since my last ride, not a day went by without me yearning for that feeling again. Having heard about horse rentals available in the LA area, I resolved to stop reminiscing and start riding again. So, I reached out to LA Horse Rentals, swayed by the plethora of positive reviews. Honestly, I should've trusted my gut instincts after that initial conversation. The call to arrange the ride lasted about a minute and a half, with their response to my numerous questions being a dismissive "visit the website and make your payment." Here's how the day unfolded. Upon arrival, I approached the small window for sign-in, greeted by indifferent and discourteous service. A brief questionnaire and injury waiver were shoved my way without explanation. When I dared to inquire about the best option for my experience level, I was met with a sneer and "just choose whatever." Deciding to select "some experience" and a mid-sized horse, I was then instructed to wait for the ride to start "momentarily". During my wait, another group of riders returned, dismounting without any assistance--this detail becomes relevant later. The situation deteriorated further when I was scolded for standing too close to a fence, despite the lack of signage or instructions post-sign-in. I then found myself standing in the sun with no shade available, except along the stable wall--where, of course, I was not allowed. After enduring half an hour of Southern California sunlight, my horse, a cute little Appaloosa, was finally brought out. As I approached him to saddle up, I was once again scolded and informed that I could only mount using a specific set of stairs, which, incidentally, the rest of the group wasn't using. Then came the stirrup adjustment, where I was again chastised for not placing my foot correctly and forbidden from standing to check the length. This would greatly impact the ride over the next two and a half hours. Lastly, our guide, who spoke no English, joined us without offering any instructions or assistance throughout the entirety of the ride. Let me recount the first quarter-mile of the journey. It entailed navigating a winding course through the stable area and down the dustiest access road/trail imaginable. I doubt they've watered that road since its construction. Consequently, for the initial 30-45 minutes, I was eating dust and grit. Oh, and did I mention they prohibited bringing any food or drinks, not even a single water bottle? Supposedly, water would be provided at the "scenic overlook" turnaround--an hour away. However, upon arrival, all we found was a broken water fountain/pump that seemed to have been out of order for years. Hence, no drinks for the entire ride. A short break at the "scenic overlook" was promised, yet we were instructed not to dismount during the ride, so that break never materialized. Now, about the ride itself. Remember when I described my horse as "cute little"? Well, that's also in comparison to the other, fairly large horses in our group. The gait experienced by those riders must've felt like heaven compared to mine. "Pete" spent most of the ride trotting to keep up, making his already pissy attitude even worse. Needless to say, my ass bore the brunt of it. By the end, I couldn't help but feel like I'd been punked by the supposedly friendly staff at LA Horse Rentals. This suspicion was reinforced when we returned to the stables, and everyone was allowed to dismount on their own, including me--without the aid of the training-wheel staircase. Lesson learned: You better make friends with the staff... or prepare to have your ass face the consequences. read more

I've ridden with LA Horse Rental three times before, and I've always had positive experiences until this last visit. While Jairo, our guide, was absolutely lovely as usual, my entire mood was ruined by the behavior of the other guide, the blonde woman with two braids that was riding with us. Just a couple of minutes into the ride, she threatened me, saying that if I would run or even tried to go faster with my horse, she would make me get off the horse immediately. This was extremely uncalled for, especially since I had clearly communicated that I know how to ride a horse. Her tone and attitude were disrespectful and made the entire experience uncomfortable. My boyfriend, who is a beginner rider (this was his 4th ride ever), had a blast so take my review with a grain of salt. I grew up riding horses and competing in horse shows from 2nd grade through college at the hunter/jumper level. I have been on many trail rides, mostly English, a few Western. I would not ride again with LA Horse Rentals. For safety, I was taught to keep adequate spacing between horses to prevent biting, bucking, and kicking. On our ride, the four of us were squeezed in so tight that I kept brushing up against the other riders. I spent most of my energy trying to keep my horse from biting the other horses and keeping my horse away from other horses who were trying to bite. When riding with guides, I'm used to clear instructions on where to go well ahead of time. On our ride, every time we came to a fork in the road, one of us had to yell back and ask which way to go. On trail rides, I'm used to the group matching the speed of the slowest rider, stopping to catch up if needed. On our ride, our guide kept smacking or clucking at my horse without warning, causing it to break out into a trot unexpectedly. Between the spacing, lack of direction, and making my horse go faster without my consent, I started feeling anxious. When the guide started trying to force my horse to go faster again, I stopped. I expressed to her that I was feeling unsafe and anxious. I said I just wanted a nice, relaxing ride and didn't want someone making my horse go faster. She said that we needed to keep the spacing close for safety and that we didn't book a private ride, we booked a group ride. I said I understood the need for safety, that I didn't want anyone making my horse go faster, and that I just wanted to walk at this point. I said I was willing to get off and have my horse led or that I'd be comfortable continuing at a walk. I kept repeating that I felt unsafe as she kept rolling her eyes, sighing, and arguing with me. She asked if I had any trauma or accidents in the past (I don't). She finally agreed to continue the ride at a walk and started asking the lead rider to slow down when they got too far ahead. When I experienced the tight spacing, lack of direction, forced increase of speed without my consent, and the behavior of the guide, I felt unsafe and anxious. I was unable to enjoy the ride, even as an experienced rider. I need safe spacing, a proactive guide, and to be able to consent to the experience of my ride. Heck, I'm perfectly happy ride at a gallop when I'm feeling safe. I did not even want to trot on this ride. I did not feel safe with LA Horse Rentals and I would not return. read more

My friend and I booked with LA Horse Rentals based on all of the positive reviews. The 3 stars are mostly for our horses. Our guide was knowledgeable about horses, but less about people. He did not ask which trail/vista we wanted to see. We had hoped to see the Hollywood Sign and that didn't happen. He didn't really point out many landmarks. The negligence with the care of the horses combined with the fact that they said they would reach out to check on me (and still have not) - please avoid this place. For the horses' sake and your own. I hope this review will bring some attention to the areas that need improvement... especially when it comes to the mental, emotional and physical health of your horses... because that lack of awareness has left me with injuries that greatly effect my life. read more

Pleasant "Christmas Eve " experience in my memory bank for the years ahead. Best time for riding is early AM. My horse was Bishop and I began to feel comfortable within 30 minutes on horseback. Our group had a very knowledgeable Instructor with an extensive background in horses. The instructor mentioned she had been riding horses since the age of 8 or 11. I was properly instructed on mounting & dismounting my horse. I was tightly secured & briefed on how to direct Bishop throughout the terrain. There was only one moment when the horses became too excited. As we began the ride, a plastic bag laying on the path frightened one of the horses. A member of our group wasn't holding onto the horse securely & was thrown off. The fall didn't faze her & she bravely got back on! Bravo! Members of the staff handled the situation very professionally. Made sure each one of us was holding on securely and re-instructed on riding protocol. I enjoyed the nature scene and just loved being outdoors in the fresh air! Saw a few coyotes too! Escaped the rain just in time as our session ended. Will visit again. read more
