I had a great time here! My friends and I signed up for the 1-hour trail ride. None of us had any previous horse riding experience besides pony rides as kids. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The horses were also very calm and friendly. I got to ride Sunny. It's a nice trail thru Griffith Park at a slow, easy pace. Our guide Julio was very friendly and informative. Came here as a late birthday gift to go horseback riding with a friend. We booked online in advance which will save you $5 though be aware if you weigh close to 200 or appear like you could; you will be weighed on a scale and be charged a higher price as this additional weight is more difficult for the horse. There is free street parking on this street that we were able to find easily. We came on a Sunday morning at 9 am on a sunny day in November and no one else opted to ride at this time so it ended up being a private ride just for us. Another reviewer complained that their ride wasn't private but I don't even know if they offer actual private rides here?? If you want one your best bet would be calling to see if anyone else has booked a time slot and book one that is less likely to be popular such as weekday early morning etc. We chose to $50/person for a 1 hour approximately 3 mile ride (3.5 according to my watch). Your horse will be selected for you and I rode with Cortez who was friendly and very beginner friendly! Our guide was both English and Spanish speaking and directed us through the route, telling us which way to go but the horses are really good about already knowing the route so required reorienting them isn't very necessary. There isn't any other dialogue exchanged like info on the trails or historic info about Griffith park but both my friend and I are local to LA so we didn't mind but something to keep in mind for tourists. We did come across a pack of 3 coyotes but they didn't bother us and the horses did not get scared at all! The rental place also offers helmets (wear one!!!) for free in different sizes. It was quite sunny when we went so even though it was cooler outside we actually got really hot so I recommend dressing in layers, wearing pants you're ok with getting dirty/dusty, and boots or sneakers as well as sunglasses. read more

This was my first time ever riding a horse, and the lack of instruction was shocking. The owner knew I was a beginner and simply told me to step onto a box and throw my leg over the horse. That was the extent of the guidance. No safety talk, no explanation of the reins, no do's or don'ts, no signs, videos, or basic instruction of any kind. As soon as I got on, the horse immediately started walking off on its own, and I had no idea how to control it because I was never shown how. It felt careless and unsafe, especially considering there were kids on the ranch, which makes it hard to believe this is standard practice. We paid over $100 for a one-hour ride, and the owner suggested we only do 30 minutes because of my experience. My fiance insisted that we continue the one hour ride and that I would get more comfortable and use to the horse during the ride which is exactly what happened. The ride was peaceful and enjoyed however, the owner told the tour guide to go against our word and bring us back after 30 minutes When we asked if we could come back and continue our ride or receive a credit, the owner was cold and dismissive and had no kindness in her heart to even try to accommodate us. The only reason this place gets two stars is because the tour guide and staff were kind and supportive. Unfortunately, the owner's attitude, lack of instruction, and unwillingness to honor what we paid for left us feeling dismissed and like she only wanted our money. read more

Worst experience ever. I took my daughters today expecting to have a ride just the three of us and instead we're put into a group. They gave me a white horse by the name of Isabella, who they referred to as Chavella. I'm no professional, but I do know basic commands and have written many times in the past. From the beginning the horse seemed agitated and would not listen to any commands I gave. I assumed she was just being a little stubborn, and I listened to the guides who told me to be more forceful with her. The more I listened to their instructions the worse she got. And it wasn't just my horse either. My daughter was having a hard time with hers as well and we were getting no help and even laughed at by the trail guides who are pretty much useless. My horse kept walking to the edge of a drop and almost fell 2 or three times. The guy came next to me and told me to pull her forcefully at which I did. I turned around to see my daughter's horse out of control and but she was in tears. I looked at the guide and told him you take the horse. My daughter and I will walk the rest of the way. They tried to shame us to make us feel like it was our fault but in my honest opinion, some horses are just not meant for the general public, and I think many of their horses need to be retired especially if kids are going to be riding them. I don't even want my money back at this point. I just hope they change what they're doing. read more

I took my wife here, as a late birthday present, as she had been wanting to go horseback riding for quite some time (she's from Texas, so go figure!), and I was committed to make this happen. I have also had past good experiences with horses as a child, so that also compelled me to go. After signing the necessary paperwork and paying for an hour ride, we waited for about 10 minutes. My wife was also allowed to give some treats she brought to the horses, which was cool. Overall, the horses appear to be treated quite well too (yes, there was manure on the ground and all, but that goes with the territory). So we took the hour long ride, as I had mentioned before, taking the trail around the LA Equestrian Center, and into the hills of Griffith Park. We crossed a bridge, went through some tunnels, and into a canyon and back. The scenery wasn't anything spectacular, but it could have been if I had opted for one of the longer rides. But nevertheless, my wife and I had a great time, and the guide we had was also terrific. It was also awesome knowing that I can still ride a horse, after all these years of not doing so. I think it's safe to say that we'll certainly be back. It's nice to know that I can still actually do this sort of thing, and I am looking forward to the next time we'll be there. read more

I'm not a fan of rent strings but my husband is obsessed with draft horses & all I own is running bred quarter horses so I booked a ride and was absolutely blown away by the staff and the condition of their horses. They were more the happy to accommodate my husbands obsession and put him on a very big Percheron gelding. I would avoid this place. The horses aren't really treated well and one of the guides, an older guy, doesn't know what he's doing. I don't think the horses are properly trained to handle new riders. When I was thrown from my horse the guide didn't do much to help me while I was on the ground in pain. And then he still insisted I get back on which I declined. I walked the rest of the trail back. Martin was our guide on the 1-hour tour and he was great! Instructed us every step of the way -- how to handle the reigns, which ways to sit to be more comfortable, etc. He even offered to take photos of us during our ride. I'd never ridden a horse before, but it was pretty easy to pick up with Diamond, and a lot of fun! The trail was pretty too. We came at 1pm on a Thursday and there were no other riders in our group, so it was nice to have it feel like a private ride. Overall very worth the $50. Absolutely not. I've been on several trail rides and even took lessons when I was younger, so I'm very comfortable around horses. This was my 8-year-old daughter's first trail ride (though not her first time on a horse). They split us up, putting my horse at the very front and hers at the very back. Meanwhile, others in the group were kept near the people they came with.It's a pretty standard practice to keep a parent and child together so I can monitor her. About 15 minutes in, after hearing her repeatedly yell "stop" and "slow down," I asked if I could ride next to her. I was told that if I wanted to ride with her, I should have booked a private ride. I said fine, but at least check on her--acknowledge that she's nervous, ask if she's okay, reassure her. The guide kept insisting she was "fine," but that misses the point--she didn't feel fine. Instead of just checking on her, he was rude and argumentative. Just ask her if she is okay! The guide repeatedly checked another rider he thought was unsafe, yet couldn't take a moment to reassure an 8-year-old who was clearly calling out for help. He was dismissive and rude. When I raised this with the front desk afterward, they were more polite but still seemed to question my experience rather than acknowledge the issue. read more

While hiking in Griffith Park area I noticed many tours of horseback riding groups and it sparkled my interest. Why not try it? Living in the pandemic made me wanna try new things especially in the area. Live a little. So I started to research and found a few companies with stables right outside Griffith Park. I chose Griffith Park Horse Rentals because you don't have to book in advance and it's cheaper if you pay cash, which is what I was planning to. My husband and I picked an hour guided tour ($39) since 20 min. don't seem enough and over 2 hours might be too much. This was our first time riding a horse since the childhood pony rides. On Memorial Day we went to their stables (street parking) around Noon, paid for the tour and signed up our lives on the waiver. They did ask about our experiences, we asked for older horses since we had none. Didn't notice restrooms around. You can feed horses for a $10 bucket of carrots. They also have 20 min. max tours for kids. It was a tad disorganized, they gave us instructions and they got us on the horses fast. Almost right away. My horse wanted to be ahead so it galloped ahead right away, taking me by surprise. Cesar, our guide gave me instructions and told me to calm down since the horse can feel if you are scared. Cesar was nice and helpful through the ride. The horses know their own, but you still need to guide them. It was just my husband and I in the group. Most of the time it was relaxing to ride, to look around, sometimes my horse or my husband's wanted to get ahead but we learnt that and how to get them to slow down. You pass stables, go through tunnels, over a bridge to cross LA river, see some cool birds, other riders, move onto Griffith Park, then back to the stables, it's a loop. My husband's horse, Texas, 20 year old would stop to smell branches from time to mine, my horse was hard to keep behind. Overall is fun and relaxing, a nice learning experience. We asked for a photo at the end because otherwise it didn't happen, right? There were big groups in line or ready to start the tour when we got back. They do help you get on and off the horse. They could be more organized, but everyone is nice and helpful. Tip your guide, they provide your safety while you ride. The butt will hurt you for a day or two, but it will pass. For my 77th birthday present, we chose Griffith Park Horse Rentals. I am very happy that we chose them. The lady manager at the front was very helpful & hospitable. She assured me I could feed the horses the Mrs Pastures horse treats I had brought with me & even thanked me for doing so. I had also recently purchased a Solo-ride device for creating an extra stirrup when you are alone & having difficulty mounting a horse. I just wanted to see how it operated. Both she & another male manager were very helpful to me in figuring out how to put it on the horse & use it to mount. I didn't need to use the device though because the horse rental has steps which are much easier to use. The horses loved the cookies & a couple of the more bossy mares wanted more. But I had forgotten to bring the second bag. I'm sure that those mares would be wonderful guardians in the wild protecting their families. By the time the bag was gone my hand was slobbery, & I did keep it flat to avoid accidental nips. Georgia "with the Blue Eyes" is the wonderful horse that the trail guide picked out for me. She is a shorter horse - half the size of the draft horses. She was just right for me. I am shorter & wanted a gentle ride this time around, having recuperated from 2 eye operations & some back problems, (though I did't say so). But Georgia is such a gentle horse, that I didn't have to worry about anything. She is a Sweetheart. Georgia knows the trails, as do all of the horses. They don't even need to be pulled to turn left or right unless encountering horses on the trail coming from the opposite direction or dodging horse poop, & I like that because I don't like using bits in a horse's mouth. Georgia knew she wanted to go slow down into the tunnels & fast going up the hills, & I let her have her run with that as I could barely see in the tunnels. She knew when we got back to the stables that she needed to go to the hay & eat as much as she could quickly before she was returned to the corral. I will definitely request Georgia "with the Blue Eyes" when we go back the next time. I just want to make sure she is up for it as I have arthritis, so worry about horses having arthritis too. My husband rode a great, large, brown bay named Diamond & he was very happy with his horse too. He used to own a horse long ago & wanted to ensure he could ride again. He could. Diamond preferred to be the lead horse & he always was. He knew the area & the turns. No problems there. The trail guide rode a beautiful brown & black bay. I asked his name & thought the guide said "Tayaka". But later when I forgot his name, I asked the horse's name again & the guide said "Jesus". So I'm not sure which name the horse uses. But I do know Tayaka or Jesus wanted to stay as close to Georgia as possible. I think Georgia is his girlfriend & they might be bonded. But I didn't want to clip his head with my foot, though I did want him to stay as close to Georgia as possible. So he did. The trail was very nice, with a good breeze, & it looped around some areas I recognized. I did see a lot of birds, some new scenics & even saw some cactus plants I had not seen before. We had a great time! The only part of the ride that was hard for me was back at the stable trying to get off my horse. I made the mistake of taking my left foot out of the stirrup & putting it onto the step first. Then I had to get my right leg over the horse & my right shoe got stuck on the saddle. So I had to hold onto the saddle horn & try to keep my balance while unsticking my shoe. That finally achieved, I had to regain my balance on top of the steps. I have been know to fall off the back of MRI tapes . . . lol. . . looks like horse saddles are no different. But my husband was there to stabilize me & the guide was there to stabilize the horse. So all worked out quite well. It was a wonderful day, to be repeated in the very near future thanks to the people at the Griffith Park Horse Rentals. We rode amongst tree lined trails with plenty of shade and open space for trotting and even cantering. No trash cans by the tables we rented for food and not even an apology. My little one came off the trail crying because the guide snapped at her and my older one was crying getting on because they made her be last even though we told them it was her birthday. This was a disappointment. So I was wondering what I did wrong... but even as a first time rider years ago- never had an issue like this, and it has been a few years since I have ridden. At other stables, staff were very friendly and properly would instruct how to steer and ride a horse in less than 5 minutes and bam awesome trail ride! At this stable, the staff did not say anything except yell to hold the reigns a certain way and give commands to go left right, straight, etc. then told me the horse was not properly following because I was nervous and that was why they had decided it would to be better/ safer for the guide to lead the horse by the reigns for the majority of the trip! ...Well this was a first. If the horse was going too slow and would not listen as they said, why not show how to properly direct him to go or walk faster? The horse did not seem to want to go, which is fine, so just kindly show how to, or maybe swap out the horse as this was apparent at the beginning of the ride. While they explained after the ride was over they needed to be safe, and I appreciate safety, I would ask to be patient enough to show me as an unfamiliar rider what I needed to do, or perhaps the horse would be happier with another rider and no hurt feelings- but this was not the experience at all. read more

All Horses very good fit , I am sure cable of caring more then 200 lb but my heart would go for them when they're is a long rides . Been coming here for over a year I brought my 4yo to ride they got the 20 min ride for them and then we fed the horses they sell buckets to feed them the owner is very friendly and so is all the staff they treat the animals right. I'm incredibly concerned about the well being and treatment of these horses. The 3 horses used for my ride were extremely sweaty when we got on. It was 74-76 degrees outside and they had just been on another ride. All 3 horses (Fred, Knight, and a mare whose name I forgot) were high strung. They chose a high strung horse for a friend of mine who had never been riding before. The trail guide, Jesus, was riding a horse that was soaked in sweat. He carried a stick/rope of some sort that he was using on all the horses to keep them moving forward. As an individual with riding experience, I felt unsafe the entire time. These horses behaved as though they were afraid of the trail guide. He kept kissing/whistling to keep them moving when I was asking for my horse to stay at a walk. I've been on this trail dozens of times and when we approached the mid point I asked him if the horses can stop for water and his reply was "they don't need it." When we got back to the ranch, they went straight for the water trough. I also noticed that there was a lame horse walking with the others waiting to be saddled/used for a ride. Thankfully I didn't see this one with a saddle on but to be honest, i'm concerned he could have been. I beg the business to really investigate the way they are rotating their horses and choosing them for their riders based on skill. I was skilled enough to handle mine, however, the new rider who got placed on a hot headed horse was not. Please take this review seriously because I am really concerned about your trail guide Jesus and the over-use of these horses. They should not have started a 2 hour ride full of sweat. And if they were hot, they should have had the chance to stop and get water. This is simply unacceptable. read more

Great experience here! We came right when they closed at 3:30pm. Lucky for us, I had my young kid with me, which meant we were limited to a short trail. Because of this, the lady at the front allowed us to ride for 20 minutes even after the facility closed. We signed the waivers, got the kid a helmet and went to wait for our horses, which didn't take more than 15 minutes to saddle up! Brooke led my kid's horse, while we followed along on our horses. It has been a really long time since I last rode, so I forgot how to maneuver the horse reigns. At one point, my horse, Butters decided to walk along the edge of a rather low fence on the trail, which below it (maybe more than 15 feet), is the river (with no water). I got super nervous and asked Brooke how to get the horse back to the middle of the trail. She explained what to do and I swiftly followed her instructions. Butters didn't even hesitate. Thank God because I thought Butters did not like me for a second there! Overall, we had a wonderful time here! We plan to come back soon with a larger group, which we were told would be split into two. Side note: Masks are worn. read more

This was my first time horseback riding and I LOVED IT! Everyone was very friendly there. I took the girls I nanny (ages 7-11) and they all had a blast!! The horses do a great job following one another and they already know where they're going so it was nice not having to worry about the little ones not knowing how to steer the horse. I really enjoyed that it wasn't just a straight boring trail. We got to go up and down hills, through tunnels and over a bridge. We definetly will be back! Useful tips: 1. Wear sunscreen! I've done a 1 hour ride with my 17yo son, a 2 hour ride with my best friend, and today a 20min ride with my 4yo daughter. I've always received great service from check in until the end. Came here today (Memorial Day) and it was absolutely beautiful! This place is easy to get to and the parking is free and easy. For $25 you sign your life away for a 1 hour trail ride. CASH ONLY. The size of the groups depends on when everyone arrives. We were a group of 8 and there was a group of 3 who passed us so it all depends. We had 1 trail guide who took us through the beautiful areas of Griffith Park and on the backside of Forest Lawn Cemetery. You don't just walk on this ride. You trot and canter. I don't claim to be Annie Oakley, but if you're not somewhat experienced there is little instruction prior to departure. Then we have to step on scale and if your over 200lbs they charge more I have never heard of this b4 I was little taken back. So she told me 166 for 4 of us I had to use my debit card and she charged me 40 bucks to Use it the end price was 195. Thats not the best part the next day I checked my bank statement and I was charged 295!!!!!! I have tried several times to get hold of someone but nothing.
