I absolutely LOVE this place and have been training in aerial rope and tissu for a bit over 2 years. All of the coaches are very supportive of my goals and not afraid to challenge me. When I first started aerial classes with coach Veronica Blair, I couldn't even climb half way up the rope. Within a few months, I was able to do basic drops and poses. Her incredible knack for finding her students' strengths has helped my progress. Veronica and Jeremy (my wonderful rope coach) recently helped me choreograph a sequence for the CC student showcase. These two coaches are very detail oriented and pointed out every possible way for me to improve and strengthen my act. They encouraged me to train harder and pushed my limits, which I appreciate and respect. I highly recommend trying out some intro and conditioning classes. All the coaches are great but have distinct teaching styles. Also, look out for groupon deals. Circus training tends to gets a little pricey. read more

I was super excited to go to Circus center and take an Intro to Mixed Aerials for the first time. I had a hard time finding parking on the street. By the time I parked, it was 5' late. So I was debating whether to go in or not. I decided to. And I was running. I checked in at 6:15 which the receptionist said "just in time". I entered the class room, said hello to the teacher and apologized for being late. She told me it was too late. I explained the reason and that the staff told me I was in time. She said the receptionist didn't do her job!!! I explained politely again hoped the teacher would understand! I almost begged her 3 times to let me in. She refused and blamed the receptionist for not protecting the rule! I felt embarrassed and frustrated at the same time at such an unkind and unwelcoming instructor. Her name was Celine Masson. Plan yourself plenty of time ahead to find parking if you want to take class here. And I would not recommend taking Ms Masson's classes read more

I love this place, but I'm also into hurting myself and paying a lot of money for it too. Seriously, I had hit a wall at the gyms, trying out the various boot camps and personal trainers trying to get more variety into my variety. Hiking, skating, biking, kayaking, I like to do it all but never can stay with just one.. Went to Supperclub *I should write this up in another review* and saw the most amazing double trapeze performance. Luckily a friend already knew about the circus center and mentioned I should try it out. Where to start? For the beginners they have 'Intro to aerial skills' which I highly recommend. Has a little bit of everything. If flying trapeze is your thing you can take a one day intro class to get a taste of what it's like. And for those of you into some more punishment, try the conditioning class... If you thought bootcamp was rough.. And you don't even get up in the air. Never thought I'd be able to do chin ups but thanks to some stern talking to... Static trapeze, great instructors and a fun way to tear your hands up and come away with lots bruises. Really. I must say though, circus school put me in the best shape of my life. It'll cost ya though, and that's what keeps me from signing up for even more. That and the class schedule is tough to swing if you are a 9-5er. read more

I signed up for my first flying trapeze class a few months ago - thinking this would be a one-time activity I can cross off my bucket list. The instructors successfully encouraged me to overcome my fear of heights, and made me feel super safe while flying upside down! I couldn't have asked for a better first time experience. It was so much fun - I signed up for a second class. And a third. And a fourth... and many, many more. By now, I'm spending quite a few hours every week flying at the Circus Center, enjoy every minute of it, and cannot recommend this place enough. Kudos to all instructors for the ongoing patience and encouragement - I'm passionate, but not necessarily talented :) read more

I had a very uncomfortable and disconcerting experience here back in 2015. I had taken a few trapeze classes already which I had really liked. I went back for another one and happened to have an instructor (I wish I remembered his name) who, from the beginning to the end of class, continued to say inappropriate things to me and the other women in the class. While standing atop of the ledge about to trapeze, this instructor was hitting on me and trying to get me to go out with him. I began to feel extremely uncomfortable--talking like that to a student is unacceptable, period. Then, after coming down from the trapeze another time, the instructor made a sexual comment about my legs being open and that's when I lost it. No one should ever be made to feel uncomfortable in a setting like that, and the fact that the other women in the class were silent speaks to how unempowered we all felt in that environment. I deeply regret not bringing this to the attention of the staff at circus center sooner. I never went back there again. read more

Tired of the regular old gym grind? Have you "plateaued"? Well, that's what brought me to the Circus Center, just looking to mix things up a bit by taking an acrobatics class. It was unbelievably fun, with hoop diving and handstands and backbends; most of my classmates were in their 30s but that didn't stop them from giggling like 5 year olds. People of all body types and levels of ability are in the beginners classes for each discipline, and the teachers are respectful of your limitations. After realizing my backbends would never be sufficiently bendy to really satisfy, I picked up trapeze, which is a thrilling workout. I'm beginning to worry that I'll become one of those "circus folk" Austin Powers was complaining about. But stick with it for a year and you might just get that ripped six pack you've been looking for at the regular gym (who knew the trapeze was so ab intensive?) Oh, and as an added bonus, there's nothing more likely to get you a date than casually mentioning that you've really improved your splits in the past few months (and we know Austin Powers would approve of that). read more

ever feel like running away to the circus, even for just an afternoon? this is the spot to go...i never thought i would ever try swinging from a trapeze, and lo and behold, i've been here 3 times now for the circus skills class - every year, my company hosts a private event here and i've been lucky enough to join every other year (when else would i have an opportunity - not to mention motivation, since this is technically "work" for me! - to attempt swinging from a trapeze?!?! just watching the performers is breathtaking - can be distracting while you're trying to follow instructions how to actually work the trapeze! fortunately the trainers are amazingly patient and skilled, particulary in dealing with those of us who are scared shitless at the sight of the trapeze so high up in the air and even the mere thought of climbing up that tiny ladder (let alone swinging from a trapeze). we've nicknamed a couple of the trainers "wolverine" and steve-o - you have to see for yourself! they definitely help make this a 5-star experience. the first year i went, i couldn't even get my legs up on the trapeze bar; the second and third time, i was able to, but i have yet to master the catch...*sigh* for those who can't conquer their fear of heights, you can also try your hand at juggling and enjoy a few bounces on the trampoline! street parking can be hit or miss, you can also park in the lot at kezar. read more

So....I cried like a baby... It wasn't my finest moment...I'll admit - I was scared, petrified, possibly enough to pee in my pants! Ok, thank goodness it didn't result into that - but you can understand that there was a reason why I cried like a 5 year old rather than the composed 27 years old I was there to celebrate... Either way - I was completely thankful for the friends I had around me. I knew they would not judge me (hopefully)! The instructors there are absolutely fabulous. They gained my trust and put me at ease...ummm as much as they possibly could. This is definitely an experience I won't forget...I def do recommend it now that I'm on solid grounds. Either way - if you're looking for an adrenaline rush and for something new to do in the city, then come here! My instructors were fun - they were just amazing, kind and understanding! A little vaudeville, a lot of circus, and a little opera storyline without the Italian and with hip-hop. The storyline was a little disjointed... But it didn't detract from the show. This is a young troupe putting it all out there for the audience. As a parent, I wondered how many moms & dads in the audience covered their eyes while their kids were twirling upside down high above the stage. It was great to see the cooperation, coordination, and honest joy in the performers. If you are human, this show is for you. Fun for all ages and the price is right! $14 general / $25 Reserved. We did the Gen Admit for 6 and had great seats right down front. This event was nearly non-stop audience applause. Great value! Don't miss it. Only 2 weekends left. If you have a fear of heights this place will cure you of it. Flying through the air with only your knees attached to the swing. It's an intense and amazing feeling and the best part is that I got it through my Class Pass. I can't wait to do it again. The only downside is that with big groups you have to wait in line for your turn during the 2 hour session. read more

The Circus School is absolutely my favorite place to go bouncing in the city. My friend showed me this place about a year ago and I thought he was kidding when he described a trampoline school in the inner sunset. This brings me back to my childhood when I was in gymnastic class in Middle school. I had so much fun. I got a LOT of respect for the people that do this for a living. Our instructors were very nice, patient and encouraging. They are also very very fit and good looking and made me want to work out more and look like them. I had so much fun and was raving about them all day. I went with a group of 7 people and we just had a great time. Makes me want to take lessons. The skills to do things that seem so easy to them are so difficult. Everyone had at least 4 swings in the air and the first two were just practice runs. The last two the instructor attempted to catch us in midflight. I just had such a good time. This will definitely be the highlight of activities to remember and do again for a long time to come. read more

HOLY MOLY! So fun!!! I took my bf on a Flying Trapeeze date here and it was amazing! Definitely not for the non-athletic, but totally for the over ambitious type. I have taken a handful of classes from Circus Center and organized a team offsite with them. I'll cover both experiences separately. The group class experience is fun. I'd rate it a 4/5. Through ClassPass, I took the Intro to Mixed Aerials class which includes training on different apparatuses and Intro to Acrobatics. Having some familiarity with silks before, the Intro to Mixed Aerials class was not very challenging - the Static trapeze and Lyra were new. I highly recommend the flying trapeze and trampoline offsite. The instructors were professional, encouraging, and persuasive as they gently encouraged you to try new things, while being respectful of your comfort level. There was a 30 min warm up with light cardio, stretching, and prep on the floor for the trapeze. They also gave us some basic trampoline lessons for those who didn't feel as comfortable with the trapeze experience. The offsite experience was fantastic and well organized! read more

If you're looking for an adventure but don't want to leave the city this is the place. I thought I was a bit over my head when we first arrived, but after my first jump, I felt completely at ease. Flying through the air 30 ft above the ground was a thrill that you don't get every day. A big reason the swinging around and aerial tricks (back-flips, handoffs, etc) were so fun was that I felt completely safe the entire time. This is important considering I was probably their tallest (pushing 7ft) visitor in a long time. read more

Shame ! I spent over $2,000 to study here for a semester and was treated like an unwanted outsider. Make no mistake, this place is run by a clique and they only like their own. It is a very negative atmosphere. The instructors are competitive and rude with their own students ! I am having a much better experience at the circus center here in Colorado. If you are coming to SF from a long distance just to go to this school, don't do it ! The town is expensive and the school is a bad experience, or at best, a waste of time. You will have a whole new appreciation for evolution because while you may dwell within a human body, you have yet to discover what you can really do with it. Ever hail a cab? Monkey done that. Ran a marathon? I bet you could train a monkey to do that. Done the splits 20ft in the air, upside-down, while skillfully twisted in rope as a poignant soundtrack plays in the background? Monkey ain't gonna learn that for thousands of years. So you may as well show off, eh? But be warned, classes are HARD (I'm currently taking an aerial conditioning class and a humble beginner's aerial class). If you already have bad-ass strength and flexibility you'll be fine. But if you are more like me and are trying to live a childhood dream that had been crushed at the somber age of six and so therefore haven't really been training much since, well then, you'll have some work to do, my friend. So for those of us lofty, unrealistic-dream-chasers... What to Expect your First Class Session: -bruises of inconceivable size and color on any conceivable part of the body. -your muscles to pretty much always be sore the next two days after class; this includes absurd places like fingertips and armpits. -to build some unladylike callouses on your hands very quickly. -that during class, your arms and legs will look and feel like flailing tentacles as they mindlessly grasp for a life-hold. -to not know what the hell you are doing; so be sure you have the ability (or learn the ability) to laugh at yourself because trust me, you'll look foolish. That being said... -at least one moment of pure shame. -to never be as good as that woman on the apparatus next to you who can scratch the small of her back with her chin if she wanted. Or the dude who can climb a rope one-handed while supporting another person by his ankles. Remember, they're going pro soon and you never will be. So no use being intimidated. -to not be able to climb a rope the first day... But guess what? I COULD! Yes, I panted like I had been making desperate love underwater for the last five minutes, and sure I only climbed about four feet the first day, but I could do it. And so can you, I swear. It's all in the technique. Oh, and all the instructors who have worked with me thus far are patient sweethearts who have put up with way too much of my whining. Bless them. read more

I had a very positive first experience here with an intro to acrobatics class. My instructor was super friendly but also did his best to push every student, even the beginners like me. The more advanced students were able to go further and there was a lot of individualized attention. I've been attempting handstands for years and with some aids i was able to do very crude assisted handstands but through targeted exercises i learned which upper body movements I still have to master, not to mention overcoming fear! This school is great because there are real circus performers practicing during the class. My teacher ‍ also helped me learn about the circus and an added bonus is that when I see the circus again I'll be able to better appreciate it! read more

Trapeze class was one of my most favorite things I've ever done in life so far and I can't wait to go back. I'd been trying to get my team at work to do this as a 'team building' outing for years, to no avail. They all thought I was crazy. So I had a little birthday class here instead. Here's the rundown of my experience: The four of us showed up and the instructor started describing what we're about to do. I was thinking, "wait, we're going to what? Like...now? Like in the next two minutes now?" The instructor had the only one of us who'd done this before (and she's awesome) go first to demonstrate. I went second. Couldn't hear a damn thing the instructor at the bottom was saying so I didn't do it right. Second try was better except they yell "Hep" instead of "go," which to a Southern girl means, "Help" and that's not what anyone wants to hear as they hang upside down 50 ft. in the air. I think I went about 6 times in an hour and each time it was like, "alrighty, I'm climbing this skinny ass ladder, okay now I'm on this little platform, good, good, okay now I'm kinda scared again, oooh now I'm flying and flipping and hanging upside down and this kicks ass!!!" And then I'd do the process all over again. It's definitely a rush and not as hard as you imagine it'd be. I'm so going back. I also want to try the aerial class. Some pointers: * Get there 15 minutes early so you can ask questions and even see if they'll let you just swing on the bar to get a feel for it (our instructors didn't do that...they just threw us into the whole thing on the first go) * Wear *cotton* pants (yoga pants, running tights, etc). Nothing baggy or flared or -heaven forbid- spandex. This isn't the 80's or the time to be a hipster. * The bar is way heavier than you think it's going to be...like 20 lbs. It's not a big deal, it's just surprising. * You swing a little faster than you'd think. Also not a big deal but it's good to know. * They essentially tell you to do things at the end of the swing, so when you get to one end you hook your knees around the bar and then literally a second later (at the other end of the swing) you have to let your hands go and hang upside down. This goes much slower in your head because you're trying to process it all but listen to the instructor at the bottom and do what they tell you when so you get the most out of it. * "Hep" does not mean "help" ;-) One thing I (and my friends) thought was weird is that you aren't secured in when you go up the skinny ladder to the platform. It's not a short ladder so don't fall off. Now go and get your trapeze on... read more

I have been trying to improve my handstand for FOREVER. I had taken some handstand classes at yoga studios but when i took a handstand class at circus center- I stopped wasting my time with those classes. Circus Center's handstand classes are legit. I am especially a big fan of Jeremy's classes on Monday night. I need o signup way in advance since the classes get really full- but they are so worth it. He has really challenged me and even though I always leave his classes a little sore and in pain- I know that they make me better so I appreciate how he challenges me. I wish Jeremy taught more classes- because I would go to all of them! read more

I arrived at the girl at the desk was super serious. I just finished a 9 hour PreNatal yoga teacher training so I was feeling super light hearted and silly. The girl seemed nervous and/or intimidated and just shut down every little thing. A bit disheartening. Another thing i noticed immediately was two girls standing around like they were the top circus performers of the world. Lots of ego. Lots of I'm too cool for you business. (I just hate snobby ass circus people, drives me nuts) Turned out that these two girls were in my class and continued to shut down any move I was asking questions about. Like, we are too fucking cool to have names for our moves. The class was alright, teacher was very sweet, absolutely no warm up though and I strained my hammy. read more

I purchased a Groupon deal for this place and am I so glad that I did! I took an Intro to Aerial class with Caroline last week. We started with warm-up exercises and stretches for about an hour or so. Nothing too hard; however, some exercises were new and odd to me? Bear crawl... Yeah, I was weirded out at first, but by doing that exercise, Caroline was able to help me perfect my push-up form, which I really needed to learn in order to, well... perk up my lady lumps, of course! We proceeded to the Trapeze room, and I psyched myself out. I am not a person who views the world upside down so it was strange for me to hang... upside down. (Go figure). But Caroline was extremely patient and taught me how to get on both the rope and tissu. Simply hanging and finding balance on both was good enough for me! I was sore for four days afterwards! Clearly, I need to work on my shoulder and arm muscles more often! This was such a fun class for anyone trying to learn and experience something new! Just be aware that if it is your first time exercising on a trapeze that your hands will hurt and blisters will form within a matter of minutes! Intro to Handstand: I attended this course taught by Jives last night. We were in the main gym room doing exercises and stretches for a good 45 minutes or so before we were instructed on how to do handstands. Boy oh boy, even with 7-8 months of actively practicing yoga, I found out that my body is still as stiff as a 200 year old tree! I also discovered (again) that I am even more afraid of being upside down! Evidently, I would skip the handstand part and try to flip my body over to do a somersault because I am too in love with viewing the world right side up to replace it with another! Jives really taught us the techniques of doing a tripod stand, headstand and various ways of doing a handstand. I was only comfortable with doing a tripod headstand -- the rest I am still trying to master. Anywho, take this class if you want to do a handstand, headstand and every other stands! Jives is quirky, kind and knows his ishhhhh. I cannot wait until I take my Intro to Acrobatics course with him next week. Maybe I will get over the whole upside down thing by then. Most likely not, but I will try. In addition, everyone here is ripppppped. All the girls and all the guys... Their bodies are protruding with muscles you never knew existed. I was seriously getting turned on by watching men walk up the Chinese poles. Who would've thought those things can be so smokin' hottt?! Come one, come all. Whatever you do, do not forget any personal belongings here! I left a Patagonia pullover here after a flying trapeze group event (my friend verified that she'd seen it when she was doing a last sweep of the area before we left; I'd been in the restroom when she'd asked around about it). Over the course of the next week, I called Circus Center five times, left my number with them three times, and NEVER NEVER NEVER received a return call from them. I live an hour away, so it's not a jaunt in the park to sally on over there to check out their lost and found. I just wanted to know if they had it or not. Eventually I asked a friend to check it out for me, and he came up empty-handed. So yeah, I will eternally think of Circus Center as the place that either threw away or stole my Patagonia pullover, and worse, never returned my call. Other than that, the parking around here sucks, the facility is pretty old and grungy, and the flying trapeze event was horribly overpriced. We had an unfortunately large group (15 people or so), and we didn't receive any kind of group discount for the standard two hour lesson ($50 per person). I got to go on the trapeze three times. I used to really like this place but it's got a weird, cold vibe overall. The payment plan is kinda unfortunate if you want to go regularly; they make you pay a separate insurance instead of building it into the price. The trapeze instructors are quite knowledgeable and very safety conscious BUT you don't get much attention unless 1) you are a youngish female, and 2) you have a nice, bouncy chest. This establishment is pretty easy to get to via MUNI so that makes it great if that's how you want to go, but driving and parking is a nightmare. read more

This review is specifically for Hannah Gaff, who teaches Intro to Handstands. I love the energy she brings to all of her classes. Hannah is truly a one-of-a-kind special teacher. It's one thing to be able to teach; it's another to be able to promote positivity and encouragement amongst her students in her classes. Everything related to Hannah involves overall good undertones and a really fun time. Hannah combines all these things seamlessly. Circus Center...more like kick your ASS center. I hadn't worked out in quite a while so I figured I might as well pick a class that seemed to be fun. I chose the Aerial Conditioning Class. Let's just say, I felt like I had to puke within the first 15 minutes. For an hour and a half class, I was pretty tired within the first half hour. While the exercises left me sore for an entire week, I felt like they were things I could have done outside of the class. From stretching to doing jumps, I felt like the money I spent on the class ($30) could have gone towards a trainer for one on one time. Towards the end of the class, we got to utilize the hanging bars and try to learn to pull ourselves up. As I was the most novice of the group, I was sort of ignored. It seemed as though the instructor was more keen on helping those who had been to the class before. I'm not sure if I would shell out another $30 for a conditioning class there. While I was sore for the rest of the week, I'll probably just use what I learned and train myself. read more

I normally take the Sunday stretching class with Christine. That class is great . She takes her time with everyone and makes sure that everyone is getting a good stretch, and is improving from class to class. She cares about the students and makes sure every minute of class is used. You definitely get your money's worth. I started taking a few personal sessions with her, and got even better results. She gave me homework and I improved immensely in just one week. You should definitely try it out the main class, it's the best flexibility class in the city! read more

John and I received a fantastic "choose your own adventure" wedding present from one of his friends and we settled on a trapeze class at the Circus Center of San Francisco. For someone who is deathly afraid of heights, this was quite an adventure to choose. The anticipation leading up to the class was killing me and finally we took our class this past Sunday. The Circus Center is located in the Inner Sunset at 755 Fredrick, right across from Golden Gate Park. It looks like an old elementary school transformed into a circus extravaganza. The Circus Center offers classes in acrobatics, aerial arts, circus skills and clowning. The most popular class is the trapeze class we took. The classes can be quite expensive at $45 a pop, but if you buy a membership, you get a discounted per class rate. The class is open to all ages and skills, they have ages 5 to 85 enrolled at the school. The trapeze class is a heck of a lot of fun, but also extremely terrifying if you don't like heights. We had 8 people in our class, 4 beginners and 4 seasoned circus folks. Our instructors were very nice and patient. At first you practice flying on the low bar about 10 feet off the ground. After about 15 minutes of practice, you get to try your skills 45 feet up in the air. I must admit the most terrifying part was not flying through the air but climbing the ladder to the top. Your safety harness isn't attached until you reach the summit of the ladder. Once at the top, the instructor hooks you up, holds you back as you uncomfortably lean out over the safety net reaching for the bar. Once you have the bar in one hand, the teacher tells you to put both on the bar and you are in sort of a trust hold with the teacher. They yell, "hep" (which mean jump/release) and you fly. The first time I was not able to pull my legs up for the knee hang but I was able to on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th try. They say let gravity do the work, but my muscles were screaming the next day from the workout. I didn't have the stomach to try the "hand off" with the teacher. I just couldn't bring myself to hang from my knees 45 feet in the air and then let go in hopes that the teacher will catch my hands mid-air. The class was a lot of fun. I've always wanted to fly through the air like a circus performer; however, I will not be quitting my job and joining the circus. This was a one time thing. Next time I'll try something a little closer to the ground, like how to balance a plate on a stick or riding a unicycle. read more

I am actually a surfer and fairly far in my preferences from circus and performing arts. However, I absolutely love the stretching classes I do at Circus Center. For one, there's a lot of options for workout programs targeting sports performance, but when it comes to stretching, none are as good as flexibility class with Ash. I can not recommend it high enough. But honestly, there isnt as many options outside of circus center for a physical exercise that would focus on stretching and flexibility. And at least in my sport range of motion is one of the limiting factors for athletes like myself. So. Highly recommend. read more

Highly recommend stretching with Ash Rexford. She has a really great approach to the class and makes it approachable for all levels. She will make sure you are squeezing all the right things to maximize the benefit of the stretch. Does Mongolian Contortion, Chinese Acrobatics, Single Point Swinging and Flying Trapeze or tight rope walking sound like something you've always wanted to do? Or maybe keep your feet on the ground and just learn some juggling? This is thee place to go! I myself went here to learn non of these! lol.I went for trick whipping! It's fun and exciting. My teacher was amazing and so knowledgeable, I really learned a lot. The class room had nice tall ceilings, and was easily roomy enough for my 8ft cow whip, along with my other class mates, so roomy our cracks and sometimes our squeals would echo! After my class was over they would have a juggling workshop and we were all welcome to stick around and try it out. VERY cool. The parking kinda sucks ( it is S.F.), get there early. The tuition isn't bad, especially for what you are so privileged to be learning, the schedules are ok, day classes are difficult if you have a day job, but get good at Circus Arts and you can quit that day job! read more

I have to confess, there is a part of me that moved to San Francisco because there was a circus school. I dream of the days when I to can fly through the air with ease. I took my first class last week and good god it was the hardest thing that I have ever done in this little life of mine. Trapeze WILL kick your ass but damn is it fun. The instructor was very kind and patient and than kindly recommended that I take the conditioning class first before continuing with the intro to aerial arts course. Not quite strong enough yet but do I have plans for my future in the circus. I love you circus center. I love going into a place where people are everywhere doing all kinds of activities that I just want to join in on. Everyone must try out the circus center and find your inner circus freak. scott is the most funniest and witty flying trapezee instructor. beginner chinese acrobats is alright as well as the contortion-stretch beginner class. but i can only drop in to those. i will check out flying trapeze in oakland and HOH in berkeley so stay tune for those reviews. thanx read more
