I will never, ever turn down a chance to see Cirque du Soleil. I don't care if it's a bunch of retired Cirque performers offering a street show, I'll probably go. Hence, when I heard about Alegria coming to town, I was delighted that the show was Uptown! So much closer than Concord :) Alegria is typical Cirque fashion - amazing acrobatic and gymnastic feats, humorous and entertaining clowns and some interesting but beautiful vocal abilities. This particular show started off quite slow for me, there is a man on an incredible high swing who opens the show - nice to watch, but I expected more twists, flips, daring tricks, etc. with an opening act. However, once the show got started, it didn't disappoint. Here are a few of my favorite acts, stop reading if you're going to Alegria and you want to be surprised! Man on the freestanding poles/spikes: This guy must have been a world class gymnast and yogi his entire life. Absolutely incredible. The balance, strength and flexible this guy exhibits is astounding. Pair of incredibly flexible ladies: I'm certain no one is supposed to bend that way, but this pair blew my mind - almost in a frightening, stomach turning kind of way. Seeing backs fold in half with their feet on their heads and balance on top of one another makes me want to go to yoga more often. And they make it look so, so easy. Trampoline gymnasts: Since I love to watch gymnastics, this act was a really fun one to watch. The stage opens up a cross style trampoline where performers showcased some fantastic talents. There's so much going on during this act, it's really hard to focus on just one performer! Normally the clowns bore me, but these were quite funny, save one particular snowy scene with a homeless clown. Intermission is 20 minutes and just about every seat in Time Warner Cable is a good one for this show. If you get the chance, Alegria is a solid traveling Cirque show.

It's my opinion that the traveling shows aren't quite as elaborate as the shows put on in Vegas, but Alegria definitely did not disappoint.

We've been here a few times for various concerts-performances over the years...most recently, for…read moreKing Crimson and Beethoven Symphony #5...and I've been meaning to write a review, so here goes. First of all, I really like this theater. Of course it's not as big as Blumenthal (Belk), but I love the size of this theater. Due to its size, you always get a good view of the stage wherever you sit (especially referring to the rows downstairs). Also, it's a really nice, clean theater (think renovated recently...but I could be wrong). One thing that could use some improvement is the spacing between the rows of seats. It's so tight, it's truly hard to get past folks in the same row...say, if you arrive a bit late, or is trying to get out! I also noticed that for the last visit, there were some chairs out in the lobby...Yay to that! Lastly, I also like the acoustics at this theater. Everything seems to be on point However, there are a few things that I found a bit offputting. For this last performance, they didn't 't allow any photography now (even without flash?)...which I don't quite get. I DID manage to take a few pics, but before the show started. Good thing...'cuz I didn't realize it was forbidden. Maybe I didn't know any better, but I recall taking pics during the performances in the past. Maybe it's a new policy...or maybe it depends on the performance?? Last thing I wanted to mention was that after the show, there's this sense that they want us out quickly...as in pronto! I don't understand why the place can't be more hospitable, and stay open for at least 30 minutes after the concert...so folks can chat, drink, etc.etc. I mean, it was Saturday night...and really not that late either! On this last concert (Beethoven Symphony #5), they sort of bum-rushed us out by 9:45 pm (concert ended at around 9:30 pm)...and I was basically the last person inside...Why? I was waiting for my husband to pick me up in the car, and I didn't want to stand outside in the cold. Well, at 9:45 pm, I noticed that I was the last one in the place, and the ushers were sort of giving me the eye...basically bum-rushing me out! WOW. I don't recall that happening at any other late-night venue in town...where folks are encouraged to leave only 10-15 minutes, following a concert. So anyway, that's my take on the place. 5 stars for the space, cleanliness and acoustics...but 2 stars for service (not sure how I'd describe this rushing folks out part lol!). Since I'm a fan of this theater, I'll still drop 4 stars...but just wanted to mention that I'm NOT a fan of the near-rude service after the performance.

The ambiance early in the evening is relaxed outdoor seating needs to update the benches they're not comfortable and the woods starting to warp but, decent music, and a solid cocktail menu. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear your conversation and enjoy the atmosphere without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. However, as the night progresses and the vibe shifts into more of a "clubby" scene which ended up being a perfect combo but let's talk charges.. feels steep for what's essentially a modest venue without standout features. Drink prices were high like the cover but not in a way that reflects upgraded quality or service. For the area, there are other spots offering more for the same price or even less but with cozy comforts and inside seating, nicer facilities so it's easy to find things not to love if you come here to support a DJ friend like I did than pay the cover and mingle. It's not a bad place by any means, and the early lounge experience is definitely a highlight followed up with the banging DJ club scene after...it's just the paying premium rates for a relatively average experience for me.
