Below is the SHORT version: Angelus was called to pick my grandma up after she passed from her home (less than 1 mile away) and charged $600 which I felt was beyond ridiculous. The burial was being paid with a life insurance policy and as beneficiaries (sister and I) of said policy we were sent a document to be signed that needed to be notarized so insurance could pay Angelus directly. The document had items listed in it regarding her estate that we had no knowledge of (we were not trustees) so we let Angelus know they would need those removed before we signed a legally binding document; otherwise, we would have to have insurance pay us directly and then pay them. The items could not (or would not) be removed so we let them know how long it would take to get the money from insurance. Angelus proceeded to be in contact with other family members to pressure us to sign the document. I would have been happy to pay out of pocket but I don't have 10k laying around so we needed that insurance money (which was 10k). After the attempt at manipulation I was very suspicious and went over the burial contract again where I realized there was a general charge of $5,000 for "cemetery charges". My sister called asking what "cemetery charges" were and she was told it was for digging up the grave/burying my grandma; it was so high because she'd be buried with her mom and they would need to dig my great grandma up, dig deeper so they had enough room for 2 coffins, and then bury them both. I was thankfully able to find the plot number of the grave my grandma had purchased decades ago THROUGH Angelus and, lo and behold, when confronted with that plot number, her actual grave was miraculously found and "cemetery charges" dropped by almost half. They tried to say that the purchase was so old and hadn't been imputed into the new computer system but are you really expecting me to excuse that people purchase plots decades in advance and you're not going to keep your records up to date? That's literally your job. You sell people plots and then not keep track of it? Angelus at one point threatened my sister that we'd start being charged a daily fee for housing my grandma if we didn't choose a burial date (which my sister had already done). When my sister confronted our contact on this and told them if that's how it would be then they could redo the contract for the cheapest immediate burial, their tones changed. I find it funny that they tried to make it seem like we didn't care because she was there for 5 weeks yet they hadn't said a word when my dad had been there just shy of that long (he died a few weeks before Thanksgiving and a lot of out of state family asked us to wait to have the funeral until after Thanksgiving so flights weren't so expensive). Everything was finally settles and the DAY we were paid by insurance, they were paid. This place is an absolute scam and I wish I could write the novel that's deserved to be written about all the other things we went through between my dads and grandmas death. Had her plot not already been purchased, I never would have chosen them.

Clear Instructions Ignored and Very Poor Communication…read more Our experience with Spalding Mortuary was extremely disappointing. From the beginning, we made it very clear that no makeup was to be applied to my mother. Carmen acknowledged this before the contract was signed and again during the signing. We specifically asked that she be presented naturally, the same way they had previously done for my nephew. After payment was made, communication became very difficult. Phone calls often went unanswered. Even our florist had trouble reaching anyone at the mortuary and ultimately chose to deliver the flowers directly to the church instead. My mother was flown to Los Angeles wearing a hospital gown. I sent my nephew to the funeral home simply to check her condition after transport so we could determine whether any touch-ups were needed. Later we were told that this visit would be considered our only viewing, even though she had not yet been dressed. The night before the funeral we brought her clothes and again clearly stated no makeup. Carmen allowed us to come in for a final viewing after she had been dressed. When we saw my mother, she had heavy makeup applied anyway, despite our repeated instructions. For many families, that final viewing is the last memory they will ever have of their loved one. Seeing the exact opposite of what we had requested the night before her funeral was deeply upsetting. We also paid for funeral services that included staff support, yet at the funeral itself only Daniel was present to officiate and direct the service. Lisa and Carmen were not there. Families deserve clear communication and respect for their wishes when trusting a funeral home with someone they love. I hope sharing our experience helps another family avoid going through the same situation during such a difficult time.

We lost our mother…read moreearlier this year, and we wanted to honor her memory with a custom designed marker that honored her faith and devotion to family. We wanted a black granite marker with her photograph, decorative floral elements and text in Spanish and Hebrew. I contacted several companies which weren't accomodating to the design elements we had in mind, or lacking in basic professionalism and sympathy, and in some cases charging more for less. We discovered Proper Placements on Yelp, and I left a voicemail one evening inquiring about their services. Within 15 minutes Chip Smith graciously calls back despite the lateness, and sends an email within minutes of our conversation. I send him a rough diagram of what we had in mind, and within *hours* Chip replies with a beautiful design that perfectly fit what we wanted! We paid for his services and he immediately had our mother's photo's resolution improved by a graphic designer, and laid out all the design elements beautifully. The high-res image was baked into a ceramic plate for longevity, and mounted on beautiful polished and professionally etched granite. All work was completed in about 6 weeks (including cemetery design approval times), and we held a grave marker blessing ceremony at our beloved mother's graveside. Everyone present was happy with how beautiful our mother's marker was, and we could feel her loving presence and gratitude as we honored her memory. If you're looking for compassionate, professional service and talented workmanship at competitive value, you can count on Chip Smith and Proper Placements!

When it was delivered to the cemetery, the people there all commented on how beautiful it was. I should add that I shopped several other sites before deciding on this headstone. I received both to my surprise, a great price and a quality product. Joseph V.
