The restaurant was very clean. The service was awesome . We just had breakfast there for the 1st time. They service breakfast at lunch time also. If you can get Mrs.Dee as a server, SHE IS AWESOME! I love this place! Everyone who works there seems nice, and they greet the locals by name when they come through the door. We tried another local breakfast place, but agreed it wasn't nearly as happy as this one! It makes such a difference. Oh, and the food was good and reasonably priced, too. Came for breakfast with the in-laws this week, it's a small friendly place which seems populated with locals. Breakfast was very good, I had a western omelette with a side of grits and also 2 biscuits and sausage gravy. Everything was delicious, the omelette was very flavorful and stuffed with ham, peppers and onions, and the biscuits were soft, flaky, buttery and delicious. Wife had pancakes and grits which she enjoyed both, and the kids had a basic but very nice bacon n eggs. The prices were also very reasonable and the staff was very friendly. Will definitely be back when in the area again, the biscuits and gravy alone are worth it! read more

Saw some reviews of this place on another site and decided to give it a try. The staff was all friendly and attentive. Answered and and all questions happily. We chatted about what it is like in summer, as this is beach adjacent and got the answers we were expecting. We arrived just after 12:00 on a Saturday so we missed breakfast which was just fine. We had a BLT and a Bacon Cheeseburger and both were delicious. No skimping on the Bacon on either sandwich. The ambience and feel of the place is an old time restaurant. A place that serves lunch and breakfast. No frills just great food and service, which is what all that I want when going out for a meal. We will be back! read more

This was my first time here, the hubby has been here a couple of times! It was early Wednesday morning so we sat down right away. The waitress greeted us right away and took our drink order. I had the western omelet with a biscuit and home fries and my husband had the pancake platter with country ham and grits! The omelette was full of flavor and oh and the biscuit was fluffy and buttery! The husband also enjoyed his platter as well! Wow! It's sad that after all these years living here, I didn't know about this great spot! It's a cozy place, where it reminds you of a country kitchen where everyone seems to know each other. They serve lunch as well and I looked at their specials and trust me I need to come back. The husband tells me it gets really busy here, so be patient and wait because it's totally worth it! My husband, me, our RN daughter with her newly married general surgeon husband were moving them to Georgia where he would have his first office. We were on the highway and stopped for gas at Love's . My husband asked where was best place to eat and was told City Café. We drove into town , as he had said it was across from the courthouse. We got out and saw Willie May's Café next-door to the City Café. The City café was packed with people so I said let's go to Willie Mays . They said there must be a reason that there's nobody in the Willie Mays café. We better wait until we can go into the City Café as recommended. This was in about 1999. The food was outstanding. I have been wanting to go Back with my daughter on a special trip but just read that they are closed. We were raised in California in the 40s and the 50s & never saw segregation in California. I felt like I was going back in time but didn't understand what was happening. The cooks were black, but all the people in the restaurant were white. The Constable came in with his big hat & gun and everybody said hello to him. I felt like I was in a Burt Reynolds movie or with Andy Griffith . My husband was extremely embarrassed when I said we were from California. I noticed that the people behaved differently when they heard me say that. I am so sad that it is gone, but I wish somebody would write about the café as I have read in all these reviews. I have been looking to buy property back there for about 10 years. I looked at some of the beautiful Victorian bed-and-breakfast that I guess are gone now. I wanted to make a trip to Laurel Mississippi with my daughter because of the television show, but she has been working in California for her in her husband's office and could not get away previously. So glad we had the opportunity to experience the Citi Café and it's great food but I wish I would've known the history and understood it better. Can anyone tell me about the Willie Mae Café and why it was empty when the Citi Café was full. Thank you. read more

A good friend had told me about this place and I pass it frequently go and from Jacksonville for the USO. This morning my wife and I were on our way for a shift at Albert Ellis airport and decided to give them a try. So glad we did! The folks are extremely friendly and welcoming and the inside is extraordinarily clean. The menus provide a great choice and we both decided on the LARGE sausage gravy with biscuits. Great "hole in the wall" breakfast place. Seemed to be filled with locals, but we had no issue being seated. It's nothing fancy, but of the few breakfast eateries in the area, this is likely the most affordable. For two people it was $12, and we ended up leaving 50% tip because, why not? The staff really cares and it shows. 15 min wait on Saturday morning for a party of 10. They split us up into 4-6 as we asked for faster service. I highly recommend this place. It's so nice to have a place right in town. It's lonely and desolate out in Holly Ridge and having a sit-down breakfast/lunch/brunch restaurant is such a blessing. And you know it's good because during the short amount of time it's open, the seats are always filled. The atmosphere is very homey. The chairs show wear as does the flooring, but it fits with what's on the menu. You sit down and are waited on immediately. The servers are very very nice and attentive. You don't go but few minutes before they're checking up on you again. Never an empty glass or a missing straw... but if these items are missing, you'll receive them in mere seconds! It's not like certain places where you ask for a napkin and you get one at the end of your meal. This pace speaks for the kitchen as well. Don't bother with an appetizer because your food will be out between five and ten minutes. I always order a grilled cheese sandwich. No matter what I eat as my main, I have to have a grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of cold tomato juice. It's perfect. I'm not going wild about grilled cheese because... it's one of the most simplest sandwiches to make. Although, I've had plenty of horrible grilled cheeses in my life and City Cafe is not at fault. It's cheesy and greasy, just like it should be. Their fried chicken and meatloaf are de-li-cious. Never dry with the right amount of herbs and spices. Just needs a little bit of ketchup and you're good to go. I don't know what the green marshmallow concoction is. It's very very sweet and I can only take a few bites, but it's still quite nice. We love their food. Nothing extravagant or showy - just well-prepared food that hits the spot. read more
