    The Roast Beast
    Chrissy A.

So this is a SUPER cute sandwich shop that I wish we would have found earlier in our week long vacation. The menu is adorable and hilarious and the decor is so fun. And the food was VERY GOOD! My husband and I both got the Roast Beast (which kinda bummed me out later as I wish we would have gotten different things so we could try more!) That onion jam and horseradish mayo were phenomenal. One friend got the Club and another friend got a Rueben on French bread. The corned beef on the Rueben was a little stringy but otherwise, everything else was great. I could see myself coming here and trying every single one of these sandwiches. I hope we're able to come back! Ps. This was about the only restaurant that we went to on the island where the employees were wearing masks which made me feel much more comfortable. They also had hand sanitizer readily available which I appreciate!

I enjoyed my grilled cheese sandwich at Cora's Isle-End Deli! Comfort food is something that I enjoy when traveling, & this deli offered a delicious lunch for my stepdad and me. We were looking for something quick and easy and we weren't disappointed. The bread was crunchy and the cheese flavorful. The hilarious pictures of Cora, the dog after whom the deli is named, in famous movies were such a fun addition to the decor! We will definitely return to Cora's when we're back in town.

Good sandwich and lunch place on the island! Plus a fun story (I'll let you visit and discover it yourself). They have a good selection of fresh made sandwiches made with deli meats, cheeses and spreads. (Would have given 5 stars for fresher cuts of meat instead of deli and more originality). The Cuban was tasty but not quite a FL Cuban and needed better pork instead of a deli pork. The Turkey Brie and strawberry was quite good, but would have preferred fresh cut of brie cheese and homemade strawberry sauce instead of jam. The cheese was a bit soupy and the meat slid right off when taking a bite. The prices are fair, averaging $7-10 bucks a sandwich. Served with a pickle and chips are an additional charge. Cute little island lunch place, if you're in the area and close to the beach!

Turkey - Apple wrap- so fresh!

Amazing hidden gem, great for lunch to take on the beach or eat inside the nice cool dining room after. The team working here are so friendly and kind. The unique sandwich menu is awesome and everything is so fresh. Did I mention they have pints of ice cream as well?! Definitely check this place out if you are in Topsail!

These had large chunks of back fin crab meat, and full of flavor. I had their soft shell crab, and it was done perfectly - lightly coated and fried. The crabs were tender and juicy, full of flavor. My dish came with fried green tomatoes that were crispy and tasty, and a healthy cut of cornbread. The cornbread was the best I've had - yeah, I said that twice, and I've been around. It was just the right touch of moist sweetness and full flavor. Delicious! We sat overlooking an inlet with several boat docks, including one for Sears Landing if you happen to come by boat. It was a beautiful afternoon, and as we ate we could watch boaters come and go. Nice setting. We'll be back.

Conveniently located in the center of Topsail Island, it was a 15-minute drive from our 2022 Airbnb stay. With our stay at Saltwater Suites in 2025, the drive was less than 5 minutes. With four mornings between the two stays, we dined in at NY Corner Deli four times. It had everything we wanted. My son and I are sticklers for routine. In every visit to NY Corner Deli, we ordered the same thing: 2 scrambled eggs with toast & potatoes for me, and pancakes for him. Orders were placed at the counter. Then we went upstairs to the dining area and waited for the orders to be served. There were no issues with the order, food or service in the four visits. In both 2022 visits, I had coffee; in both 2025 visits, I had Mountain Dew. Refills are free for both coffee and soda. My order tasted better than a similar one at Tick Tock Diner in NYC. It was great value for money. I always felt that I ate enough to last me through lunch. There was no reason to try anything different. Unlike Tick Tock Diner, NY Corner Deli did not have any TVs in the dining area. We go to the beach to get away from the world. TVs keeps us connected to the world and the negativity that comes with it. Furthermore, there weren't many people in the dining area whenever we were here. I had only seen up to two other tables that were occupied. If you like a decent breakfast and a quiet atmosphere, NY Corner Deli is the place to be. I'll be back the next time I'm in the Topsail / Surf City area.

Despite a couple scathing reviews I've written over the years, I really try hard to only do good…read moreYelp reviews simply because posting a bad review unfairly is playing with a person's livelihood. That being said, I feel like this review should be viewed more as a public service announcement. Call it what you want, it ain't good, but neither are these donuts, so there's that... Just this morning, my wife asked me what kind of donuts I wanted, and my exact response was, "I don't care. A bad donut is better than a good bagel any day, so get me whatever." About 30 minutes later, I was proven wrong AND introduced to the only bad donut I've ever eaten. First of all, understand going into this place that chaos theory is their business model. By that I mean this: whatever your vision of a "donut" is, flip it upside down and inside out, and then make it all way more complex and intricate than it needs to be, and that's what you're going to get here. If the idiomatic phrase "too clever by half" were a donut place, it would be this donut place because they take a simple donut and turn it into a Rube Goldberg device that just isn't as good as it is complex. As far as texture goes, think of a donut in your head. Whatever your favorite is, think of that. You may think of sweet, dense, cakey donuts capable of holding tons of toppings (think Dunkin), or you may think of the uber-sweet, light-and-fluffy donuts glazed and hot off the conveyor belt (think Krispy). Now that you've pictured that, mash them both up together. Take a cake donut and treat it like a "hot off the belt" donut while frying it in oil that's too cold so it absorbs too much grease. Cakey donuts and Krispy donuts, they aren't the same, friends, and they shouldn't be treated the same because what you're going to get if you do is nothing like the donut in your head. Next, flavor-wise, understand that these donuts are basically made from slightly more dense pancake batter. That's it, and not much sweeter I might add, and definitely nothing special. Here's where the whole thing goes off the rails though. They take all of these steaming round rings of run-of-the-mill and douse them with thin coats of whatever you want on them, and none of whatever they're putting on these convoluted collars of cake ends up as a solid covering; it all turns to a puddle of liquid disaster surrounding this so-called donut. You want a Boston cream? Well, they douse the whole thing in a watery chocolate glaze and slap a dollop of vanilla pudding into the hole of said disappointment. There! Done! You want a maple bacon donut? Well, kiss the maple goodbye, glaze it with something watery and too sweet, sprinkle it with sugar, and throw some bacon on top. There! Done! All in all, these were just really bad donuts that tasted like pancakes (I love pancakes, but these wouldn't even qualify as decent pancakes!). I'm sure it's a local novelty, and I'm sure they have cultivated a cult following of good ole southern Karens, Kens, and their kids, but I'm also sure their product doesn't live up to the definition of what a donut is in its most basic form. I have to assume they have survived because they are the only donut shop in the area, and they have the market cornered. I won't be a repeat customer, but good luck to you if you choose to try these, and I hope they're better than the two boxes I have that are going down for the dog to eat the second my wife turns her back.
