Someone once told me that the key to happiness is to have options. Now, I'm not sure if that's totally correct, but I do find that having choices certainly makes me happier than when I feel like I'm stuck with the same old same. So I love when I can find a place that offers a choice-such as a bakery that provides vegan options-and that are tasty! This adorable cafe serves so many amazing treats! I was doing kind of a weird party and wanted to be inclusive to all allergies. So I came to City cakes with a bit of a weird order, five cookies, frosting on the side, two gluten free, all vegan, separated. They were happy to oblige. The cookies themselves were delicious ! I didn't realize this was not the main location for this business. I made a special trip, but this is two very small cases, with just a few sweets as choices. I tried a donut and a cupcake. Both were tasty and had a nice, slightly dense texture, but were very sweet. The service was adequate, but not friendly. We are from out of town and we were so excited for visit this bakery. Menu looked great. When we arrived, the girl who helped seemed...ok. Not super friendly. Maybe a little bored? Not the best at customer service. Whatever, I picked out a few things and she handed me the box after I paid. Then, as I turned to leave, she turned away from the register and covered her mouth with her non-gloved hand and then rushed over to the trash can (RIGHT BEHIND THE COUNTER, completely visible) and looked as if she was throwing up. We decided to celebrate my MIL's bday early last minute to accommodate schedules. She and her husband are vegan and it's sometimes complicated to cater to! I found City Cakes on Yelp. Both locations are closed on Sunday so I called to verify they'd have stock to buy in advance and pickup for a Sunday celebration. They did and were able to write happy bday for pickup. I went with chocolate 8" round and oh my goodness it's so good! I'm not vegan but appreciate a good vegan dish or dessert. It's the best chocolate cake I've had in a while. I'm eating a piece right now as I write this on my lunch break. Each component individually is also so good. The cake is very moist and the buttercream so rich! The Midvale location is kind of in the middle of nowhere but it's a cute little shop with a variety of desserts on display for purchase. The staff was friendly and informative both over the phone and in person. The cost of the cake before trying was 30% more than comparable items I've purchased but WORTH IT. This City Cakes in Midvale replaced the Draper location that used to be off of 10600 south. This week I tried the raspberry cheesecake, it was gluten free and vegan, amazing and more than I could have hoped for. I love getting the double chocolate chip cookies, the chocolate chip cookies, the woopie pies, and their donuts. I most recently tried the fake chicken salad that was in the fridge with some other yummy options like the Mac and cheese and the nacho cheese sauce that's made in house. read more

Ordered a birthday cake (vegan) so that multiple guests with different restrictions could enjoy and it was delicious. Everybody was raving and asking where we got the cake from, had to spread the word! Cake itself was very tasty, and very very dense. Icing wasn't overpowering and the chocolate cake it self was sweet but not over sweet. I am someone who loves dense cakes, so if this style cake is something you prefer then it is the perfect place for you. Driving home from Riverton and desperate for some baked treats on a Sunday, City Cakes was one of the few options open. While I am not vegan, nor do I have any dietary restrictions, their pictures on Yelp looked great, and I headed on over. They have two cases filled with many baked goods: cookies, bars, cupcakes and full size cakes, tarts, parfaits, donuts, cinnamon buns, bread, etc. Toward the back of the shop, there is an open cooler with beverages and some cafe-style savory offerings like salads and sandwiches. There is plenty of seating available. We selected the following: Brownie - decently fudgy, with firm chocolate chips that added a nice additional texture. Frosting was very whipped and light, with good chocolate flavor. Sugar Cookie - soft, as is my preference, with generous frosting, but it was a bit too one note and super sweet for me. There was a touch of lemon, but if they upped that flavor and (I can't believe I'm about to say this) reduced the frosting, I think they'd have a better cookie. Snickerdoodle - crunchy, and I prefer a soft center with crisped edges, but it was fine. Tiramisu - appreciable, yet not overpowering coffee flavor, and great balance of cream to cookie pieces. Now, I am judging them against a standard bakery, and they craft truly respectable vegan treats (not to mention the plethora that are available gluten free as well!). They can compete with most average bakeries utilizing butter and/or wheat flour, and that's impressive! Prices are average, service was friendly, and the space is fine. Not gorgeous, but clean, and a nice enough spot to enjoy your purchase if you so desire. read more

My first time going to a Vegan bakery, my sister in law has many allergies and can't eat dairy or gluten. They had beautiful displays of cakes and pastries and even had many free samples. Loved the cinnamon roll, peanut butter bar, but didn't care for the marble cake. It looked great but was so heavy in weight and in flavor. Not sure what it was made out of but will pass on that next time? 2 of the 3 things purchased were great though and the samples were all so tasty. Happy Day!! I didn't seek this place out. I came to the shopping center with my girlfriend to go to TJ Maxx and wanted something sweet and turned to Yelp to read the reviews. Saw it listed they had gluten and dairy free things. I had no idea they were ALL vegan until I walked in. They had tons of gluten free options as well. I got the parfait and mint bar. The parfait was super rich I could barely eat more than 3 bites. The mint bar had a great filling the the chocolate part was like a chocolate bark (hard and thick). I wanted the pumpkin bread but didn't have a way to store it and didn't want to deal with it when I left on the plane but would have otherwise. They had free pumpkin bread samples and it was moist and delicious. Definitely check this place out if you're nearby!! read more

This location Is the sister and second location and just as good! Depending who's working you may get something attitude if you take more than 5 minutes to order, but if you are overwhelmed with all the goodness, just say you aren't ready to order yet so anyone in the store can order if they want! This is tucked in a shopping center right next to a Sally's beauty supply, and then I believe it's a smiths to the other direction on the opposite side. It's bright colors draw you in so it's hard to miss! Gluten free options get me every time and this is my favorite place to take carnivores or non vegans because they can't believe it doesn't have dairy products! So good! My daughter insisted on having a puppy cake for her birthday and I found these guys by chance when leaving the neighboring grocery store empty handed. I also had a few peanut allergies in the group, so I needed assurance that they were safe. These guys cater to allergies and dietary restrictions, so I felt more than taken care of in that regard. This cake turned out better than I could have imagined. My daughter was thrilled! The cake was moist and delicious, the frosting was perfect (a bit thick, but a necessary thing with the decorating we chose). I'm always amazed when I find a cafe/bakery that specializes in vegan and gluten free foods that taste delicious! City Cakes is a totally plant based bakery. They have a very extensive case of baked good plus a grab and go section with lots of food options like vegan Mac and cheese and tempeh "chicken" salad. I tried both of those food items and they were good. I probably wouldn't go back just for them though. The real winner here are all the baked goods. The donuts are delicious. I had a chocolate donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles that was truly one of the best donuts I've ever had (vegan or otherwise). The peanut butter bars were crazy good! They were large and very heavy/filling so I'd recommend splitting one with someone. The muffins are great too. I love how many gluten free options they have as well. I have a son with a dairy allergy and it's hard to find him a treat that he can have and that tastes good. i've been to this location twice now, i haven't been to the OG location in south salt lake cuz this is just so much closer to my house & is essentially the exact same. the first time we came was after getting lunch at even stevens just before christmas, we stopped so my husband could try a cinnamon roll & he really liked it, i didn't try anything. yesterday was Valentine's Day, the first year that i couldn't just go to any grocery store & get him candy since he went vegan two months ago. i stopped in around 12:30 & it looked like they had been pretty busy thus far, which makes sense considering any bakery or desert place would be slammed on valentines. i got a box with two orange poppy seed cupcakes (the last two in the case), two red velvet cupcakes, a sugar cookie & a chocolate whoopie pie (a valentines special). i also grabbed the to-go mac n cheeze because i needed something to eat for lunch. prices weren't bad, it was $25 for everything. the space itself is a decent size, but it's not decorated very cute. the staff is nice but in a normal way, not an over the top way. i headed into work after i left here, which is just at my parents house since i work for them & we're currently in between office spaces. I just heated up my mac n cheeze in the microwave & it was actually very good! next time i will heat it on a stove top for sure, i'm sure it would taste much better that way. i let my parents have a red velvet cupcake & they were shocked it was vegan, they said it tasted like a regular cupcake! my husband ate most of the treats & thought they were all good, i ate an orange poppy cupcake, half a whoopie pie, & tried a bite of the sugar cookie. the orange poppy cupcake was amazing, i loved the frosting & the consistency of the cake. whoopie pie was good but really rich, & the sugar cookie was good as well. it's so nice to have an all vegan bakery not far from me, will definitely go back time & time again! read more

City Cakes is the OG vegan bakery of Salt Lake and they've still got it going on! Their flavors are classic and enjoyable for everyone, even us allergy having folks. You can even find their stuff in Harmons which is super convenient. My only slight gripe is that often times I've found their cakes to be a bit dry. But considering they are vegan, and how difficult it is to bake vegan, I give them huge props and still really enjoy their recipes! read more

I've been eating City Cakes cake slices for months because they were sold at a nearby Natural Grocers. When I saw the store location while walking around in Draper, I had to stop by! I was overwhelmed by the selection. There is a wide variety of cakes, cookies, muffins, and other treats available - all vegan, and many gluten-free. In addition, there are savory to-go foods, soups, and drinks. I showed up fairly late (I think around 7:50pm?) and was grateful they were still open. I picked up a muffin, donut, and sausage wrap. Update: After speaking with the manager about my experience, she suggested I come in for another cinnamon roll, on the house. This one was much better. It was obviously more fresh and moist; however I must say it was still on the dense side. I probably won't opt for a cinnamon roll again. The birthday cake I ordered, on the other hand, was delicious, as compared to other vegan, gluten-free cakes. It was orange/poppy seed, with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting. Second thing was when we ate our two treats later they were not good. If you're are doing gluten free, just do it right. Two different cookies but they both tasted the same flavorless flour. One was a macaroon.....instead of being dominantly coconut it was flour with very little coconut. The other was a frosted sugar cookie.....taste was very bland only saving Grace was the frosting.
